I think the Patriots got a pretty good deal assuming it's for a late round draft pick.

At some point the mystique of the Patriots and

their ability to convince malcontents to pull it together will disappear. I’m not sure when that is, though.

When they stop winning

Players will put up with just about anythign if they’re winning and have a chance at competing in the big games. That’s what has helped keep Moss quiet. If the Pats start losing, the players will gripe a lot more.

Love this quote from Page...
“The Patriots are a team that’s kind of like the Yankees,” he said. “You never like them…”

Bet his new teammates are loving him already. And if he thought Haley was a hardass…wonder how Billy B and him will get along?

10 + wins in 2010. Chiefs SHOCK the NFL!!! Mark it down.

I don't think that quote surprised his new teammates.

It’s very accurate. The quote in its entirety is a compliment.

…but when you get a chance to play for them, you’re excited and you’re really happy that you get to go to a team that’s a perennial winner. I know about the Super Bowl rings," he said. “I know it’s a team that goes out with the chance to win a game every week.”

by NJ Chiefs Fan on Sep 7, 2010 8:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah...I didn't post the whole quote. Still...

Seems like a bad idea saying that your new team is a team that you never liked. But now that you’re going to play for them…then they’re suddenly cool?

Oh well. Page is just another ex-Chief now. Officially.

Pats fans won't like that quote

That quote won’t go over well with Patriots fans. Not that it’s important or anything, but comparing the Pats to the Yankees is just about the quickest way to annoy the local fanbase. Getting off on the wrong foot a bit there Jarrad.

It’d be like if the Royals got a new player and he talked about how it was great to go to the Royals because they were a once-great franchise on its way back— they’re a team just like the Oakland Raiders!

He meant it as a compliment, and in the long run it doesn’t mean anything, it’s just amusing tone-deafness. If he had said the Celtics instead of the Yankees, that would have gone over well.

by Offense of the 70s on Sep 7, 2010 8:59 AM CDT up reply actions

good and bad

Good in that they are being compared to a powerhouse MLB team that is known for winning often, especially at the Championship level.

Bad in that you’re comparing a Boston team to a NY team – them’s fightin’ words.

I don’t think anyone will really hold it against him. He’s not from the area, he obviously doesn’t have a huge grasp of what to say and what not to say in regards to that. And he has a point – a lot of people hate the Pats simply because they win (and maybe that they got caught cheating – but people hated them before that). There are probably a ton of players on that team that hated New England when they played against them, but are happy to join them when given the opportunity.

I wish Page luck

I know there is a ton of resentment towards Page, but he was a productive 7th round pick that I enjoyed as a Chief. During regime changes there will always be casualties that fans don’t understand but just as grateful I am the next 5 years plus we have Berry and Lewis, I am glad Page held down FS the past few.

I don't wish the guy any ill will or anything

I just don’t understand his thought process and his decision to fire his agent and hire his brother to replace him.

Boggles the mind.

I don’t exactly see how he fits in

Then WHY would you trade for him? Doesn’t he have to fit in at, uh.. I don’t know… Safety?

He obviously has input

But doesn’t make the decision.

When he says “I’m not sure how he’ll fit in here” – it’s pretty obvious that the choice wasn’t his.

That’s just the media and some meth-crazed bloggers that blow out of proportion his status. Does he get more input than many (most) HC’s? All indicators say yes. Does he call all the shots? Not when his job title isn’t “General Manager”.

yes he's the head coach. he's also in total control of all personnel moves making him the de facto gm

if you look at the patriots organization, they don’t have anyone with the title of “gm”. why? because their head coach does the work of the gm.

Bill Belichick was named New England Patriots head coach in 2000, succeeding Pete Carroll. Owner Robert Kraft also gave Belichick most authority over football operations, effectively making him the team’s general manager as well. He is one of three current NFL coaches with the title or powers of general manager, the others being the Philadelphia Eagles’ Andy Reid and the Washington Redskins’ Mike Shanahan.

this is his bio from wikipedia. you can argue with them and everyone else who knows better

First, seriously - don't get smarmy.

Second, in Bill B’s own words “We’ve played against him, and I don’t exactly see how he fits in, but I’m glad we got him.”. That says it wasn’t his call.

Maybe one of the guys on this page made an executive decision that went over the Hoodie. Like the director of Player Personnel.

Maybe he just got really bombed on 2-for-1 Tequila Shot night at the local pub and forgot that he made the trade and couldn’t figure out why afterward.

But any way you slice it, usually the guy that makes the final call on a deal doesn’t find himself wondering how a player he just traded for is going to fit in. And if that is the case somehow, Belichik is a weird, weird dude.

It's just a non-answer for the media

Hoodie DOES have the final say on personnel decisions, so he knows why they traded for Page – but that doesn’t mean he’ll tell anyone

Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl

the executive of player personnel works for belichick. everyone but the kraft's do.

it’s pretty common knowledge. also, if you know anything about the parcells/belicheck coaching style, they say stuff like, “i don’t know exactly how he fits in” more because they don’t like telling the media their plans than because they really don’t know. sorry if that seems “smarmy”. i’m not trying to be. i’m really trying to help you understand that he has virtually total control of the organization answering only to ownership.

Quite alright

I just don’t really care for any of the teams in the AFC East. I know BB is the major driving force there and has way more input than anyone else of a similar title in the NFL. Outside of that, I don’t follow the Pats at all. And the Dolphins probably less than that.

That quote just didn’t seem to make sense, even in coach-speak. I usually expect a non-answer more along the lines of, “We’ll see how we can best fit him in, and hopefully he can improve every week.”

When I see someone says, “I don’t exactly see how he fits in” – it sends the message that, “I didn’t necessarily want this to happen, but I’ll try to make the most of it.”

But again, I don’t follow the Pats. I never really read the Hoodie’s quotes or pressers. So BB’s coach-speak may just be a very different style – and one that doesn’t even convey what he’s actually trying to say. Even if what he’s trying to say is nothing at all.

After doing a little reading I see that they’re missing their safety McGowan – so Page may be a one year stopgap until he gets back. And if that’s the case, the BB still just doesn’t make sense. Maybe it was a bad choice of wording when he answered the question.

Pioli asked for a favor from him.

Seriously, this stinks of the Pioli-Belichick connection.

Page was outplayed by McGraw last year

If he devoted himself to the Chiefs 100%, he wouldn’t be starting this year. I have nothing against the guy, but he never lived up to the fans hopes. He’s walking into a situation where everyone is deadly serious about football the way Pioli/Haley have it designed here. Page is going to find out that the Patriot Way is a lot like the Chiefs Way. Hope he’s ready to work like he’s never done in his career. If so, he might help the Pats and we get a draft choice. Seems like a win-win.

by ChiefConcern on Sep 7, 2010 9:03 AM CDT reply actions

He didn't live up to hopes

Because no player ever lives up to hopes. I know I hope that every single player we sign goes on to be 20 time pro bowlers and win 20 super bowl rings through the course of their careers as Chiefs.

But as far as actual expectations go, I think Page exceeded them. Being a late round (near afterthought) pick, and starting every season he was with us is definitely more than one can usually realistically expect from a 7th round pick.

I hope

He rides pine all season. I’d also take an extended stay on the practice squad. Sends a terrible message when you cry about the hand you’ve been dealt refusing to play until you get pocket aces. Take the hand you’ve been dealt and deal with it doing the best you can with what you have.

Hey Page… guess what? Belichick hasn’t won a Super Bowl since his mastermind coordinators left for other jobs… you might have heard of those guys… I hear they’re both on a team in the midwest trying to recreate that magic from last decade.

Jackass.

Yeah I can...

But I’m ot sure if I’ll be able to make it. I’m going to get stuck at work on a software upgrade until about 4, then I’ll have to make the 45 minute drive home to pick up my wife, then get ready, get kids ready, take them to their sitter, then make the 45 minute drive to the stadium (not counting traffic)….

I might be parking at around 7… and I’m wanting to get into the stadium early to check out the renovations.

I can make the post… it’s mostly just going to be members coming up with some ideas for a place/time to meet… but I doubt I’ll actually make it. Sorry.
