NFL Roster Cuts: Just Two Quarterbacks For The Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs included in their roster cut down on Saturday evening quarterback Tyler Palko. He had a rough camp and didn't really show a whole lot so I think many knew there was a good chance he would be released.

But this also means that the Chiefs have just two quarterbacks on the roster -- Matt Cassel and Brodie Croyle.

Todd Haley went with two quarterbacks in Arizona once so it's possible that the Chiefs carry just Cassel and Croyle.

More likely, though, I think the Chiefs look for a third quarterback out on the open market. Chiefs GM Scott Pioli likes to keep a developmental quarterback on the roster -- Matt Cassel anyone? -- in the chance that he can strike gold twice with another Tom Brady.

Considering Croyle's injury history, I suspect the Chiefs will target another quarterback.

Check out all the players that have been released and see if you can pick out a quarterback candidate.

Depends on who does the shopping...

Haley QB’s tend to be shorter and w/ a gunslinger mentality (Glenn Foley, Tony Romo, Kurt Warner). All of the 6’4, 230 pound prettyboys have fallen by the wayside w/ Haley (Neil O’Donnell, Drew Bledsoe, Matt Leinart).

Pioli, on the other hand, likes the textbook QB (Bledsoe, Brady, Cassel, O’Connell, Gutierrez).

Both QB types need to be athletic enough to get out of the pocket and have above-average arm strength. Not necessarily a cannon, but make the throws-type good.

Just something I noticed awhile back…

Haley's QBs?

This is the first job where he’s had a significant say in personnel, so I think it’s premature to say what kind of QBs he likes. He was previously just coaching the guys given to him.

by Tarkus on Sep 5, 2010 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Unsure of that one, Tarkus.

I can see your point in his Jet days—he was just a wideout coach. But in Dallas he was the offensive (sorry, Parcells doesn’t do that…“Passing Game”) coordinator, who brought Romo in, promoted him over Bledsoe, and helped Tuna Bill usher the Romo era into being.

Same in AZ: It was under his watch that Leinart was dumped for his backup, a man who was supposed to be washed up named Kurt Warner. There, he WAS offensive coordinator for a Super Bowl run.

You’re right: This is his first “true” personnel job, and I admittedly am drawing some lines here. But I don’t think I’m as far off as it seems.

You really think

Parcells deferred to him over who would be the starting QB?

Or even Whisenhunt, for that matter?

I’m sure he had input, but at the end of the day, he had no real say. Just look at the situation with Weis. From day one, he’s said he’s not a personnel guy, but a coordinator. And sure enough, despite all the “experts” expecting Notre Dame guys to be drafted, none were. And Weis is a far bigger name than Haley was at his previous jobs.

Or to put it another way, if Weis preferred Croyle, but Haley preferred Cassel, guess who’s starting?

by Tarkus on Sep 5, 2010 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree--the buck stops w/ the coach.

I doubt Parcells deferred to anyone, but I do recall that he had a lot of respect for Haley and made him a coordinator early on in Dallas. Whiz and Haley surely had the same relationship Haley and Weis have now: You’re my coordinator, but I’m the coach.

As I said, I’m probably not right—it’s all shirttail speculation. Just some details that I noticed (and connected) about a year back, and only mentioned as food for thought/discussion. Haley’s 2009 training camp comments on Croyle got me thinking…

Not trying to suggest this is gospel truth or anything, and I apologize if you saw it that way.

He wowed everyone at the combine in all the drills.

It is not the physical skills holding him back, it is his size, and the fact that it sounds like he is having trouble learning the position in the NFL.

His downside is he doesn’t have a big arm but otherwise the kid is a pretty good prospect. Based on our offense it’s probably something that he can manage.

KC could just be going with 2 QB's

That’s what Green Bay does. And then they stash one on the practice squad.

16-0 here we come!!!!

by mushin on Sep 5, 2010 9:07 AM CDT reply actions

The problem is that most of the goo developmental guys will go on their own teams practice squad.

If we want one will will probably have to put one on the active roster in order to get them.

by saskwatch on Sep 5, 2010 9:09 AM CDT up reply actions

The bigger issue is that you're developmental QB is open to other teams signing him

Teams can swipe players off each other’s practice squad, they just have to make them active on the game day roster for so many games. If (god forbid) Cassel ever went down and Brodie was made the starter, you could have a scenario where a team could scoop your number 2 before you could

16-0 here we come!!!!

by mushin on Sep 5, 2010 9:12 AM CDT up reply actions

He is available only if he is on the practice squad.

If he is on the roster, he does not have to be one of the active 45 on game day. As long as they are part of the “right 53” nobody can touch them.

by saskwatch on Sep 5, 2010 9:15 AM CDT up reply actions

True, was talking about if KC only keeps 2 on the active roster and stashes 1 on the practice squad

It’s how Green Bay runs their roster and is why they cut Graham Harrell

16-0 here we come!!!!

by mushin on Sep 5, 2010 9:17 AM CDT up reply actions

That is why I think we will have 3 on the roster.

In order to get one of these guys off a PS we will have to put them on the roster. Otherwise the only guys we will sign are guys that can’t make their own teams practice squad.

by saskwatch on Sep 5, 2010 9:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Right

And with the emergency 3rd QB rule, they don’t have to be on the 45 man game day roster to use them in emergency situations. I don’t think that’s a bad way to go, rather than trying to stash them on the practice squad.

by Tarkus on Sep 5, 2010 9:52 AM CDT up reply actions

that is "good"

I don’t even want to know what a “goo development guy” is.

by saskwatch on Sep 5, 2010 9:10 AM CDT reply actions

Tom Brandstater

Denver wasn’t in love with cutting him and he just spent an entire offseason with Peyton Manning. High-character guy with smarts who has shown flashes in the past…seems like a “Right 53” type of guy.

Colt Brennan or Graham Harrell are at least upgrades over Palko with better upside potential.

Seriously people, look at saskwatch's QB list and tell me who on this list has more starter potential than Lienart....

QB Troy Smith
QB Levi Brown
QB Hunter Cantwell
QB Dan LeFevour
QB Brett Ratliff
 QB Graham Harrell
QB John David Booty
QB Tom Brandstater
QB Trevor Harris
QB Tyler Palko
QB Pat White
 QB Zac Robinson
QB Patrick Ramsey
QB Rhett Bomar
 QB Colt Brennan
QB Jonathan Crompton
QB Jarrett Brown
 QB J.P. Losman
 QB Keith Null
QB Jevan Snead
QB Chris Simms
QB Richard Bartel

The only guy who even remotely jumps out is LeFevour….. Take your personal feelings about the guy out of the equation and Leinart is hands down the best QB available. Throw in the fact that he has to know that at this point in the season he will most likely have to play this season as a #2 or #3.

So you got the fax. So why didn't you add it to the resume? What do you mean? Of course martial arts training is relevant.

I think Matt Cassel has ALOT to prove this year and if he can't deliver with some consistancy then having a guy like....

…Leinart on the bench wouldn’t be such a bad thing.

I’m a Cassel supporter but we will know if he is the future QB of the Chiefs after this season.

Not to mention Leinart would be great trade bait sitting on the bench if we so chose to utilize him that way.

I’m willing to be wrong…I just don’t think I am.

by Tarkus on Sep 5, 2010 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not talking about this season....

Unless someone was really hard up…. If Leinart comes in, competes, plays well and pushs Cassel next preseason then I would bet he either takes the starting job from Cassel or he becomes a valuable trade piece.

by Tarkus on Sep 5, 2010 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions

And what cost would it be to us?

I’m not saying that we should pick him up on waivers, thus absorbing his contract (I think). I’m talking about signing him to a 1 or 2 year inexpensive contract with accelerators built in, ala Mike Vick, and see where it goes. No one is going to give Leinart starter money… or a starting job right away, he’s gonna have to earn it. Why not let KC see what they can do with him? Whe have the coaching and the organizational backbone to reign this guy in. He isn’t TO or 2.7.

So you got the fax. So why didn't you add it to the resume? What do you mean? Of course martial arts training is relevant.

by BigRedChief on Sep 5, 2010 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I think that's Leinart's big issue

From what I read, he doesn’t work to improve, compete, push himself. He “deserves” to start. If this is truly the case, Haley will have NO part of that BS.

I don't necessarily disagree

But Leinart just doesn’t strike me as a "right 53’ type of guy. That concerns me more than the awkward situation with Cassel.

I’d rather go with a guy who accepts being #3 for now, but has a real chance to develop into something in the future. Leinart was a #10 pick, and would have likely been a #1 pick the year before. I just don’t see him ever accepting a role as a backup, even if that’s his only option. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as long as you’re a team player. I’m just not sure he is.

Leinart is really no different in shortcomings than Cassel

They both have tendencies to check down too quick, both don’t have a cannon arm, both haven’t looked very comfortable in the pocket, however Leinart has CLEARLY demonstrated his lack of leadership, maturity, and hard work, thus far, so he is behind Cassel on those aspects. If Cassel doesn’t work out, having Leinart, who is essentially the same physical QB with less intangibles, doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.

Moving on….

wow I knew I liked Kendrick, but his story is pretty interesting...Stuff like 5 weeks and he wins Homecoming King are just nuts.

that said

Im thinking we get a PS QB(I still believe we carry 2 on the 53 for week 1)
Im thinking we will go find a Possession reciever if we can
I would LOVE it if langford sees the door and we bring Rolle in…(why not right)
and bring in an offensive lineman

to make those 4 moves(3 roster 1 PS) I would get rid of langford, Daniels and Cole, if I had to keep one, I keep Cole of those 3

I would look at yesterdays cut and immediately take Gales, Brown, Harris w/G.Brown obviously

if you bring in Rolle

McGraw would be the guy to dump, imo. Keep the younger guys.

hmm...I just dont see that happening because of his value on special teams, and his crazy value on the sidelines, hes like another coach

and I know that gets REALLY old…since we have coaches, but he sees things others dont, hes like a poor poor poor man’s john lynch, and a good ST guy.

I hear you though, Langford hasnt looked all that bad. I just dont want to part with bates as I think someone snags him…

I think a few players havent been cut yet in hopes that other teams will want other players

from Rotoworld
Seahawks claimed QB Zac Robinson off waivers from the Patriots.
The likelihood of Matt Leinart showing up in Seattle continues to decrease. Pete Carroll got a good look at Robinson in the Pac 10 last year, but the team is expected to try to re-waive him and put Robinson on the practice squad. They’re still only planning to keep two quarterbacks on the final 53.

Didn’t Robinson play for Okie State?

worried we will take him?

i fear what he would do to Cassel’s confidence, though I’d love the poetic justice of Leinart riding the bench behind him.

same here

I don’t have too much worry though. I think if we see it, Haley KNOWS it.

Nice discussion guys...

My thoughts are as follows:
No on Leinart. He has enough starts to grade him as being a dissapointment. With little potential in my opinion. Work ethic/attitude questions. And then throw in what y’all are saying about he and cassel at USC. I say no way.

If we are saying that we have coaches who can develop a qb. And the third string isn’t supposed to contribute today. Then let’s take a flier on a young guy like Jevan Snead who’s athletic and has an arm. Comes from a pro style background. Was an elite prospect out of hs. He’d be at the top of my list if we take someone to shelter and develop for 2/3 years. Just my take. Good list. Thanks.

Also

I’m a little tired of hearing about spread offense qbs from college being attractive options in the NFL. In particular any QB from Texas Tech’s scheme. The others I’m much less familiar with. But, the guys who put up all those numbers in college, sure seem confused at the next level. Give me a young guy who was a winner in college, who played primarily in a pro style offense to try and develop.

plus

Snead would fit right in with Dexter and Kendrick!

!!! TROY SMITH !!!

I would take him as our starter today.

I’d also bne interested in Jevan Snead and/or Graham Harrell as developmental guys.
