NFL Roster Cuts: Kansas City Chiefs Release 13 Players, Put Two On IR

The Kansas City Chiefs needed to make 22 roster moves to get down to 53 players. They released seven players on Friday and late on Saturday evening announced (via Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com) the release of 13 more players.

Here are the 13 released:

T/G Colin Brown, NT Garrett Brown, DE Dion Gales, RT Bobby Greenwood, G Darryl Harris, LB David Herron, NT Derek Lokey, S DaJuan Morgan, QB Tyler Palko, S Ricky Price, WR VerranTucker, LB Pierre Walters and RB Javarris Williams.

They also announced DB Maurice Leggett and WR Jerheme Urban were placed on IR. Urban had no known injury.

That's 22 roster moves in the last 48 hours. Obviously there's a lot to talk about with these moves that we'll dive into.

The Chiefs also made official the Jarrad Page trade to New England.

Your thoughts on the cuts?

Same situation with Brown last season. He didn’t have a known injury either.

Any idea on the injuries to Leggett? I didn’t think it was that bad.

My Meaningless Thoughts

Shocked about Lokey, Urban must have dropped something on his foot to get injured, I pray that the Chiefs don’t sign Matt Lineart, and I find it interesting that there was no mention of Cameron Sheffield. Do they think he can play in the near future?

Only having fragile Brodie Croyle as a backup seems like a bad idea to me

LOUIE!!!!!

I loved when we had him as our punter. I don’t remember the game years ago but he made that horse collar tackle (legal back then) on that return guy. Just grabbed the guy by the back of the neck as he ran by and guys feet shot up from under him. For a punter, he was a stud.

Agreed.

I think Brodie is a really talented QB (for a backup role), but you can’t possibly trust him enough to keep him as your only backup.

by MDChief on Sep 4, 2010 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

I’d hope they dont try and start the season with only two QB’s. If Cassel stinks it up or gets hurt, I have zero confidence in Croyle lasting, let alone winning a game. Its going to be interestign to see what Pioli does from here.

by Brian69 on Sep 4, 2010 9:26 PM CDT up reply actions

If Cassel Gets Hurt For Any Period Of Time

This season could go very, very badly for the Chiefs very quickly. Croyle’s never much more than a hit away from the IR, and if we lose Cassel, the Chiefs are just a bad series away from watching some guy off the street play QB. Or very possibly watching the punter play QB because Croyle can easily not last even a game (remember the Titans).

I don’t think it hurts us at all if Brodie could stay healthy, infact our offense would open up more with him at QB.

You need a guy in there without the ego possessed by Matt.

Bill Williamson says this which had me rolling on the floor….

Perhaps Matt Cassel will push to reunite with the man he backed up at USC.

No way Leinart would be happy with that one. The only way this happens is if Haley had a better relationship with Matt than anyone know.

He was a beast in college...

I remember when he tore his bicep but asked to get taped up instead of have surgery so he could play the next week vs Florida. He was less effective with one arm but was still getting pressure, and you have to admire the toughness.

He ended up opting for the surgery and missing the rest of the season and the start of Packers’ camp after he got drafted because of the biceps. It sounds like he’s had nothing but trouble since then.

I thought he would transition well to the NFL. I guess you never know.

I get the impression they took Palko because they needed the warm body at QB

I think it was quickly realized he wasn’t going to be a project, and decided to grab someone off the waiver wire.

Now watch them put him on the practice squad and prove me wrong.

Two rookie safeties is a big risk

Plus my guess is it takes some time to learn how to play the NFL game. Safeties have as many responsibilities as LBs. I think they are going to give him time to learn it and make sure someone is along side Berry to help him learn it. Wait until the bye week.

i bet at least 3 more will be cut...

to make room for another backup Tackle, a 3rd string QB, and a D-Lineman.

I was surprised they kept Mike Cox and BOTH Copper and Lawrence.
2 or 3 of these guys will get the axe soon…

Jared Allen wouldn't have fit the 3-4 anyway...

honestly...

DE is the LEAST of KCs needs

Jackson, Dorsey, Gilberry, magee, Smith

Might be the 2nd deepest position after RB

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

I'm pretty happy with our OLB's

Hali, Vrabel, Studebaker and Sheffield.

And Demorrio's doing some rush LB, too.

I think it might be easier to track the LB variations they will NOT try this season.

IMO I am not sure what Lawrence, Magee, and Washington did to deserve to be on the roster.

I hoping (not really) that we find that Urban is actually hurt. I would hate to learn that the Chiefs dumped him to IR so they could keep Lawrence. The same with Leggett for Washington. I would have preferred they moved these guys to the PUP list then IR?
Our depth in the secondary is inexperienced. And Magee for Lokey?? Come on….enough said..

A player has to agree to go onto IR

Its not somewhere you can just dump a player onto no matter what Jarrad Page says.

I believe they actually have to be injured as well

I don’t think you can dump a healthy player there.

My understanding was the Brown had an actual injury

knee I believe. Just not a major one. But enough that he could be put on IR.

Lawrence has been playing well on special teams

Magee wouldn’t have anything to do with Lokey since he’s a DE and Lokey was NT. I don’t think Magee’s as bad as some think either.

Washington can back up safety and corner, saving a roster spot. He also plays on ST.

knowing the two involved in the trade

We probably won’t know until the league announces the full draft order some time next April. That is unless some reporter uses his league contacts to find out. Bill or Pioli will never say!

Interesting moves....

I figured they might send Harris to the IR. I assume that Garrett Brown will likely be sent to the practice squad. I also assume that since they cut both Brown and Lokey they must be looking at other NTs or may have found one already.

it's a shame

he really is a great receiver.

I don’t think he’s incredibly slow… he might make a good 4th or 5th WR somewhere. I’m sure he can play some special teams.

Oilers/Titans had a guy like that once, by the name of Wycheck...

He learned to block eventually. They just kept putting him on the field and hiding his crappy blocking until he “got it.” Kind of like what we did in the late nineties with Tony G, till he figured out that side of the game too…

It’s tough when you’re a spread offense TE, trying to transition.

My thoughts...

The Urban on IR is a surprise.

Huzzah! Good bye Palko.

Awww. Sorry to see Lokey go. He was comically fat and looked a lot like Curly.

I ‘m surprised Justin Cole made the team… he’ll be one of the first to go after we hit other teams’ scrap heaps.

Congrats to Cory Greenwood. He looks like a good special teamer.
Congrats to Horne. Looks like a decent speed threat.

The departure of Morgan leaves (by my count) only one of Herm’s bubble draft picks – Barry Richardson.

A lot of OL depth was released… looks like Pioli’s going to be looking elsewhere for OL help…

Would like to see the Chiefs take a flyer on Simms or White as a 3rd string QB . Leinart would make since only if the relationship with Haley was a good one in Arizona. Any more QB’s who would fit.
