SCOOP Alert- #Chiefs seriously considering Matt Leinart. Looks like Palko is the casualty. @ArrowheadPride @kentbabb @ProFootballTalk

and

Palko definitely gone... waiting on confirmation of Leinart interest. #chiefs @ArrowheadPride @ProFootballTalk

and

Again to reiterate, the only confirmation is that Palko is cut... Leinart interest is informed speculation but far from confirmed #chiefs

OK...

Despite what I’ve said about Matt Leinart, he IS an upgrade over Palko. No one would know the difference, but in reality it would be a better situation.

Ugh... seriously?

I’d take him over Palko… but really?

Whatever I guess.

by Ochophosphate on Sep 4, 2010 5:01 PM CDT reply actions

At least he'll throw a prettier ball

… I guess.

I’ve just always been curious about this guy because he won a Heisman and he was apparently a Top 10 talent in that year’s draft. That’s GOTTA count for something.

why would Leinart wanna be 3rd string?

He obviously aint replacing Cassel…and Croyle is most likely the 2nd string…what we want him for?

no doubt

this makes NO sense Leinart made a stink about being second string, but thrid string, that’s acceptable?

by bansky on Sep 4, 2010 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions

being the 3rd on a team with Brodie as the 2nd, is practically the same as being the 2nd

number 2.

If this is true, I don't think we are done.

I can’t see us Croyle and Leinart. Perhaps they would move Croyle?

I'm not crazy about Leinart

But if they pick him up, I’m willing to give him a chance. Lots of players do better after changing teams and he would be better than Palko.

Cannot see this happening. It would make him look desperate.

Matty

According to many of the local news radio guys here in Phoenix, the Cards are looking at this like…he has had 4 yrs in this system…Anderson just got here this yr and is already neck and neck with him….so who has the most potential going forward?….Lienart has no fire, looks like he does not give a shit while on the field…goes three and out and simply walks off the field like,"oh well"….no leadership abilities and the other players just dont respond to him……I wouldnt want him around eating up a roster spot.

But Cassel is garbage, man.

by bamachief5558 on Sep 4, 2010 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I question Cassel as our franchise QB

But his numbers are better than Croyle’s. He’s one of the best backup QBs in the NFL, but he’s not better than Cassel.

by LTownChiefsFan on Sep 4, 2010 5:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Croyle only got a chance

to prove that he’s injury prone. He has better pocket presence, accuracy, arm strength, decision making, etc. than Cassel. The teams he got his 7 or so starts on were historically bad.

What has Cassel done in K.C. to make him look better?

Maybe you’re watching different games than I am.

I’m no fan of Leinart, but Cassel has been pretty terrible both last year and this.

by ChiefDJ on Sep 4, 2010 5:33 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

I'm not trying to be an apologist for Cassel

But did you see how bad the team was as far as running and blocking the first half of last year? Not to mention they were always behind so teams knew they were throwing. The guy was average last year, on a very below average team….and that defense also is plausible for Croyle too…

Matt Verderame

by Flowers24 on Sep 4, 2010 5:35 PM CDT up reply actions

He was not average last year.

He was 25th in the league as far as QB rating goes.

That is well below average. In the bottom 10 in the league.

Yeah the offensive line was not great last year, but he took a Pro Bowl offensive line in New England and was one of the most sacked QBs in the league. Some of that is on him.

Haley coached him

so this indicates Haley has a good opinion of him

That said, Haley also seems to think D. Williams > D. Johnson and T. Jones > J. Charles, which are hilarious propositions

by SillyHatDay on Sep 4, 2010 5:18 PM CDT reply actions

or Belcher or Mays, and is just as big as Belcher or Mays, has low body fat,

which is the basis of Haley’s criteria for starting at Strong ILB, led the team in tackles after starting 16 games last year, and did so without injury.

He should be starting at ILB opposite DJ on the weakside.

Plus, it doesn’t hurt that he can get to the QB.

I have no problem with bringing in Leinart.

Haley knows what he is as well as anybody in the league not on the Cardinals. Leinart lost his job to a hall of famer, and clashed with the head coach. Not the first time a change of scenery would be good for a guy.

He wasn’t a high draft pick for nothing.

by saskwatch on Sep 4, 2010 5:25 PM CDT reply actions

Nick Wright is so simple minded that he puts 2 and 2 together and got 5: Haley coached in Arizona, Arizona just released a QB that he coached, thus Haley/Chiefs are interested in that QB. That is about as “informed” as Nick Wright gets for his “speculations”.

I'm all for having to earn your starting position, and Leinart is clearly better than Palko and has more durability than Croyle.

But the politics of it would make my head spin. Cassel backed him up at USC. Leinart was a top 10 pick, Cassel was a 7th rounder. Now Leinart and Cassel end up back on the same team? Even if the coaches make if perfectly clear that Cassel is the starter and Leinart is the backup, a very vocal segment of the media and the fanbase would be calling for Cassel’s head and for Leinart to start the second Cassel had an even slightly below average game. I’m not sure Leinart’s upside is worth that kind of controversy. Then again, it might be, what do I know?

by MtHammer on Sep 4, 2010 5:31 PM CDT reply actions

i agree

picking up leinart could make cassel feel like the coaches lost faith in him. with all the critics, i can easily see cassel feeling like he’s going to lose the starting gig to leinart all over again. that type of metal trauma is not something cassel needs. it would being doing more harm than good. i just don’t see this happening.

that's not a little pressure

bringing in a new QB is a little pressure. bringing in the guy the coaches picked over you just because he was the coaches guy is a ton of baggage. sure cassel might not crack, but in my opinion, i think the mental aspects this could have on cassel are too excessive for the benefits of replacing palko.
