NFL Roster Cuts: Kansas City Chiefs Latest Depth Chart

The Kansas City Chiefs released seven players on Friday evening. Though they were all backups, there are still some things we can take out of this.

Here are a few things I think these roster moves could mean:

  • Releasing Ikechuku Ndukwe, not eligible for the practice squad, may mean that Darryl Harris is healthy to play in 2010. Releasing Ndukwe and Santucci means there are only three guards on the roster other than Harris.
  • Leroy Banks release probably means Jake O'Connell is safe. He was definitely on the roster bubble but came on strong in recent weeks. I see the Chiefs keeping three tight ends.
  • Mike Richardson's release means there is a special teams spot available. He played basically all special teams later year.

The Chiefs full depth chart is listed after the jump.

Star-divide

OFFENSE

WR: Chris Chambers, Jerheme Urban, Quinten Lawrence, Jeremy Horne, Verran Tucker

LT: Branden Albert

LG: Brian Waters, Ikechuku Ndukwe, Darryl Harris

This release, to me, would mean that Harris' injury isn't that serious. It's speculation at this point.

C: Rudy Niswanger, Casey Wiegmann, Lemuel Jeanpierre

This doesn't change much. The real battle here is Niswanger and Weigmann (or both).

RG: Ryan Lilja, Jon Asamoah, Dan Santucci

Again, not much of a change in anything here.

RT: Barry Richardson, Colin Brown, Bobby Greenwood, Ryan O'Callaghan

TE: Leonard Pope, Tony Moeaki, Jake O'Connell, Leroy Banks

Good news for Jake O'Connell. It's very possible he makes the roster now.

WR: Dwayne Bowe, Dexter McCluster, Terrance Copper, Rich Gunnell

This doesn't change anything other than supporting Copper was a special teamer in 2010.

QB: Matt Cassel, Brodie Croyle, Tyler Palko

FB: Tim Castille, Mike Cox

RB: Thomas Jones, Jamaal Charles, Jackie Battle, Javarris Williams

DEFENSE

LDE: Tyson Jackson, Shaun Smith, Alex Magee

NT: Ron Edwards, Derek Lokey, Garrett Brown

RDE: Glenn Dorsey, Wallace Gilberry, Dion Gales

LOLB: Mike Vrabel, Andy Studebaker, John Russell

No surprise here.

LILB: Corey Mays, Jovan Belcher, Justin Cole

RILB: Demorrio Williams, Derrick Johnson, David Herron, Cory Greenwood

ROLB: Tamba Hali, Pierre Walters, Cameron Sheffield

LCB: Brandon Flowers, Mike Richardson, Jackie Bates, Maurice Leggett

Richardson's release is somewhat of a surprise. He was a special teamer in 2009. Looks like that spot is now open.

RCB: Brandon Carr, Javier Arenas, Travis Daniels, Ricky Price

SS: Eric Berry, Reshard Langford, DaJaun Morgan

FS: Jon McGraw, Kendrick Lewis, Donald Washington

SPECIAL TEAMS

P: Dustin Colquitt, Ryan Succop

K: Ryan Succop, Dustin Colquitt

KO: Ryan Succop, Dustin Colquitt

PC: Thomas Gafford, Cory Greenwood

KC: Thomas Gafford, Cory Greenwood

H: Dustin Colquitt, Tyler Palko

PR: Javier Arenas, Dexter McCluster, Quinten Lawrence

KR: Javier Arenas, Dexter McCluster, Quinten Lawrence

i think

They go w 3 guards…lilja, waters, asamoah… keeping rudy as a backup to all 3 interior positions.

That ST spot is cory greeenwood’s.

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

oh, and OConnell is safe for sure

Has been for longer than we thought, IMO

Agreed

After a rough start, I’ve really been noticing his blocking this preseason. He’s done a god job sealing the edge or opening up lanes at times.

by bh13 on Sep 3, 2010 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions

of course

That assumes Casey wins the starting Center job… which I think he will

Not really

Rudy could start, but in case of a need at guard they bring in Casey to play C and move Rudy to G.

by Big Chief on Sep 3, 2010 9:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know about that

You’d then be putting two replacements in when you only need one. Not that Rudy can’t play G well enough – but you’d slide him out of C and take him out of any groove he may be in so far.

I think Casey has the spot – mostly because of his ability to read defenses and adjust protection, but also because of his great ability to pull and block in space – which fits well with our play style right now. I don’t mind Rudy, but there is no substitute for massive amounts of experience.

If Casey is healthy (which he is now) I think the spot is his.

by Ochophosphate on Sep 4, 2010 8:40 AM CDT up reply actions

I have no idea who starts between Rudy and Casey

but that wasn’t my point. My point is the Rudy could be the backup guard AND the starting center. Changing two linemen when you need to do an injury sub is not uncommon. Getting ‘in a groove" doesn’t count for much when you need to fill a position.

I gotta agree with ya on Cory Greenwood...

he has looked great on special teams. Last game with a near block, and then he rushes back to lay down a hard hit allowing Arenas to head downfield an extra 15 or so yards.

really showed that he is a hard worker.

Go Chiefs!!!!

by ravenhawk on Sep 3, 2010 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions

the block looked nice and all

but do you really think that o lineman was gonna catch arenas?

by Mayday07 on Sep 3, 2010 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Whether it helped Arenas or not

It showed great hustle to go from almost blocking the punt, getting off the ground and running all the way back down to throw a block.

by bh13 on Sep 3, 2010 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Even if the lineman doesn't get the tackle...

he gets pushed further outside slowed down, and the tackle is made 15 yards sooner.

The subject was him being aggressive on special teams… I also failed to mention that the hit that he laid knocked the lineman out for the rest of the game.

Go Chiefs!!!!

by ravenhawk on Sep 4, 2010 7:51 AM CDT up reply actions

there's an interview with greenwood on kcchiefs.com

he jokes about the play saying, “i went for the most dangerous man, the long snapper”
i love his aggressiveness too. im just sayin..

by Mayday07 on Sep 7, 2010 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

O'Connell has come a long way

Whether he makes it or not, he’s a much improved player since last year.

I have nothing against Corey Mays, but I hope he is released. If he is vying for a starting position, the defense will be run on all year. Belcher is an upgrade and he needs someone pushing him. Mays isn’t that guy, IMHO.

by ChiefConcern on Sep 3, 2010 9:30 PM CDT reply actions

These are the cuts that we will see next...

Verran Tucker
Bobby Greenwood
Garrett Brown
Dion Gales
Justin Cole
David Herron
Jackie Bates
Pierre Walters
Travis Daniels
Ricky Price
DaJaun Morgan

Go Chiefs!!!!

by ravenhawk on Sep 3, 2010 9:36 PM CDT reply actions

I could see Walters making it

Price might have a chance too. Depends on whether they like him or Langford more.

walters should make it

The rest… no brainers

The other 4 that I'll call for are much harder to give these guys the pink slips

Tyler Palko
Terrance Cooper
Quentin Lawerence
Tim Castille

Go Chiefs!!!!

I can't see them cutting both Copper and Lawrence

Both have been solid special teams guys, so I imagine they keep at least one of them.

Personally, I think they keep both and cut Urban.

by chiefsfan62 on Sep 3, 2010 11:26 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

"I see the Chiefs keeping three tight ends."

Kind of a no-brainer, I think. You can’t very well have one obviously injury prone TE (you know who I’m talking about… it’s the reason he slid in the draft and he’s proved it) and only one other. That would leave the team terribly stunted in that area.

Ya know, Tony Moeaki reminds me of another very talented yet apparently fragile player on the Chiefs’ roster, who gets hated on a lot. Are we gonna come up with a nickname for him as well, should his injury-proneness make its presence felt during the regular season? Tony Brokeaki, perhaps?

by bamachief5558 on Sep 3, 2010 9:40 PM CDT reply actions

why in the world would we keep a player that has done nothing in 3 years?

when all our safeties were injured Morgan was so bad they went to leggett

by Home skillet on Sep 3, 2010 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions

OK cut both

Langford has played horribly., giving up big plays and looking out of place.

by Spot the looney on Sep 3, 2010 10:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

In fact, we should cut all our safeties but one and just let Eric Berry do his thang. Then we could have an extra linebacker in and maybe DJ and Demorrio could get on the field at the same time.

by bamachief5558 on Sep 4, 2010 5:44 AM CDT up reply actions

hopefully

the ndukwe cut says more about asamoah then anything.

by Hendrix on Sep 3, 2010 9:56 PM CDT reply actions

Possibly Brown too

Since Ndukwe was working at guard and RT.

by bh13 on Sep 3, 2010 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

absolutely

I think it says Asamoah and Brown are the future.

Ndukwe and Alleman were cheap stopgaps

by stagdsp on Sep 3, 2010 10:08 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I'm hoping Harris will be part of the future too

Albert-Harris-Jeanpierre? (likely someone else but I do like him)-Asamoah-Richardson/Brown

by bh13 on Sep 3, 2010 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

I had high hopes for him coming into the year. He played fairly well last preseason, then got to run with the first team while Waters was out. Shame he got hurt.

by bh13 on Sep 3, 2010 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Jackie Bates aint backing up Flowers...

need MoLegg as soon as possible cuz Bates is like 3rd string at BEST.

When you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.

Jamaal above all. #25 ftw.

by NJChieffan16 on Sep 3, 2010 10:06 PM CDT reply actions

yeah, that 4th cb is a big question

It’s Leggett, Daniels or a waiver wire guy

by stagdsp on Sep 3, 2010 10:09 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

If healthy, I think it's Leggett's job

Then Daniels leads my list for 5th string if they keep 5. Would definitely be a place to keep an eye out for a possible pick up from someone else.

by bh13 on Sep 3, 2010 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions

i think it's Daniels' job

They see Leggett as a S, mostly.. and the head injury could land him on IR, they won’t take any chances w that

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

by stagdsp on Sep 3, 2010 10:20 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

It's possible

It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Leggett and Sheffield end up on IR. Don’t want to take chances with head/neck injuries, much as I’d love to have Sheffield play this year.

by bh13 on Sep 3, 2010 10:22 PM CDT up reply actions

leggett, sheffield AND harris

I think Pioli/Haley will be liberal w IR, especially for players who may have a future for the Chiefs, but may not be ready yet… see 2009 for examples

Makes sense… protects them from losing guys for the future, allows for all 53 to be healthy and ready to go

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

by stagdsp on Sep 3, 2010 10:28 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Definitely

If you like a young guy and he’s hurt, get him on IR, let him recover and work out to get prepared for next year as you free up a spot for someone that can help this year.

by bh13 on Sep 3, 2010 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Daniels did play pretty tough last game...

There really isn’t much room for a 5th corner…

Go Chiefs!!!!

cut Palko and go with 2 QB's

it’s not like he isn’t going to be waiting by the phone whenever we need him or Stull

very possible at his point

There's bound to be a veteran or two on the heap

that would make great QB depth. I think Palko’s a gonner.

I don't think you can go with 2 QBs

when one of them is Croyle.

As much as I love him, he’s just too fragile. I’d like to see a developmental type guy in the 3rd spot, though. He doesn’t count against the 45 man roster, because of the emergency 3rd QB rule. Palko is not that guy.

by Tarkus on Sep 4, 2010 1:20 AM CDT up reply actions

This is when it gets interesting

by Tuesday or Wednesday this depth chart will be blown out of the water with all the guys that get waived from other teams. Should be a fun couple of days. That being said, Pioli being Pioli, it ain’t gonna be sexy.

I would be surprised if we picked up another O Lineman

The only way I can see your scenario playing out is if someone they wanted to draft gets cut in an attempt to put them on the practice squad. But I still think that’s unlikely.

I’m still wondering if they are going to add a NT to the mix.

I dunno

I think overall it’s vastly improved already. I think the disappointment may come with a few prudent but low-key additions in the next week or so. Seems like every year we have to fire up the suicide watch because we don’t bite on a surprise big name cut.

D.Willams is obviously going to start and

DJ plays his position. They need to take mays out and start belch with DW. DJ probably knows that with crennel’s scheme the will be changing shit up all the time and he will get his fair share of PT.

by chiefnation on Sep 4, 2010 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Once you put someone on IR

they’re done for the season. The NFL is not like MLB, where you can put someone on the IR for a certain amount of time. It’s all or nothing in the NFL.

The one exception is the PUP, and I’m not sure if Harris is eligible.

by Tarkus on Sep 4, 2010 1:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Question about Cory Greenwood

Is he a legit long snapper (listed as B/U)? If so, why not drop Gafford- keep Greenwood and another spot open?

by juvatbull on Sep 4, 2010 12:31 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Because you underrate the long snapper

Greenwood is listed only because you need someone as a backup. It doesn’t mean that he can do the job near as well as Gafford.

by Tarkus on Sep 4, 2010 1:28 AM CDT up reply actions

True

and it also gives him something else to do aka better chance of making the team.

Anybody else kind of excited about this guy?

by bamachief5558 on Sep 4, 2010 5:46 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think he's made some really good plays when he's been given the opportunity

It will be fun to watch him develop.

by Big Chief on Sep 4, 2010 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions

To the contrary

I don’t undervalue the long snapper, which is precisely why I asked the question. Either Greenwoods name is there be we need a name to fill the spot, or he really is a long snapper. I haven’t made any practices so am just wondering if anyone has insight on which way it falls.
And yes, I like the kid. Hope he makes it.

by juvatbull on Sep 4, 2010 9:39 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

The Chiefs

wil pick up Free Agents in the cut down period so a lot of players listed will most be likely gone.

by popparuss581 on Sep 4, 2010 1:43 AM CDT reply actions

Mike Richardson is a mystery to me

I would’ve gone with a 52 man roster if he were the only guy available. He is that bad. True story.
