NFL Roster Cuts: Kansas City Chiefs Release Seven Players

The Kansas City Chiefs had 75 players on the roster (Jarrad Page doesn't count) as of Friday evening.

Now they have 68.

The Chiefs released seven players: TE Leroy Banks, WR Rich Gunnell, C Lemuel Jeanpierre, G/T Ike Ndukwe, CB Mike Richardson, LB John Russell, G Dan Santucci.

TE Leroy Banks: He was a tight end signed in June when Brad Cottam and Tony Moeaki were out. He probably didn't have a good chance to make the roster anyway.

WR Rich Gunnell: He was an undrafted free agent that was just a camp body.

C Lemuel Jeanpierre: With both Casey Wiegmann and Rudy Niswanger, Jeanpierre didn't have much of a chance to make the roster.

G/T Ikechuku Ndukwe: The first surprise of cut day. Ndukwe was spelled Brian Waters on the second team Thursday evening against the Green Bay Packers.

CB Mike Richardson: Another slight surprise because he was on the team last year as a special teams player.

LB John Russell: Russell was signed during training camp and, considering the state of the Chiefs linebackers, didn't stand a good chance.

G Dan Santucci: He was also signed during training camp and, like Russell, didn't have a good chance coming in late.

Ndukwe was a little surprising since he was running second team.

Must mean they expect Harris back and are pleased with Asamoah, which I agree with. I think he will start next year.

Apparently Brown makes the team? Maybe...

That’ll make my boss happy. Apparently his wife works with Brown’s fiancée and thinks he can get free tix to the game…

I'm surprised we haven't seen more cuts.

seems Daniels, Morgan, Bates, should’ve been some of the first to go after getting torched last night.

NO!

Not John Russell!!!!

Jamaal Charles...Enough said.

Still hoping to pick Morgan up for the Lions

Peeks in door to see if he’s still in there, waves bottle of Irish whiskey as bait.

"We lost!" Delmas yelled at reporters. "What you want? What you got to ask me?"

I'll tell you what. We'll give you Morgan AND Page for Calvin Johnson, straight up.

Of course I’d have to talk it over with Scott Pioli first, but I think I could twist his arm enough to make it happen.

Yes, they are!

The job’s been open ever since SD hired stubborn hardass A.J. Smith as GM a number of years back. Yes, a reformed former Chargers fan (hangs head in shame). I love the new direction of the Chiefs under Scott Pioli. Big things are in your future. I hope the Lions play the Chiefs in the Super Bowl someday soon (heck, I hope the Lions play ANYBODY in the Super Bowl someday).

In the recent fantasy draft for the Pride of Detroit main fantasy league (the one with regional director Sean Yuille and all the usual suspects) at Pride of Detroit (Lions SBN site), I got Jamaal Charles (a steal!) as my 3rd RB (starting flex RB/WR), Thomas Jones as a reserve RB, and Chris Chambers as a reserve WR.

I’m excited about the coming season! The Lions and Chiefs look to be two of the most improved teams this year! Back to respectability, then on to the playoffs!

And of course I’m a huge Eric Berry fan and spokesperson (spokesmodel?…..nah) for elite safeties everywhere.

I also was drafting for the Chiefs this winter in the Pride of Detroit Official mock Draft

5 SS Eric Berry
36 NT Mt. Cody
50 ILB Brandon Spikes

I was leaning towards those 3, and all 3 fell to me (as they could have in the real draft, had Pioli decided to go that route…….but it looks like he did even better; that’s why he’s Pioli). All 3 picks were well-received at the time here at AP. Thanks again for all your help with the picks!

I've favored Cox through the preseason

No homo, but I do think that’ll be the toughest decision the coaches have to make, Cox or Castille.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Sep 3, 2010 8:34 PM CDT reply actions

Kind of glad?

He is one of those “mystery” guys that leaves you wondering how in the hell he’s even in the NFL. He’s really, really bad.

Colin Brown

He looked pretty good in some of the practices. Think he’ll make it?

Cox and Castille are both NFL players. That will be very interesting.

by SDChief on Sep 3, 2010 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Ndukwe being cut improves his chances

It may signal he made it, since Ndukwe was a backup tackle like Brown. Albert, Brown, O’Callaghan and Richardson are the only tackles now I think.

by bh13 on Sep 3, 2010 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes

I saw him play both. He looked better than I expected. I don’t know how much he played last night or how well he did. Anyone notice?

by ChiefConcern on Sep 3, 2010 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

brown cox castille

All 3 make it

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

It will be interesting to see how the roster turns out

Some positions seem trickier to predict than others.

lol

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

by WarWolf on Sep 4, 2010 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions

I can't see them keeping 2 fullbacks

with all of the depth we’ve got at halfback. I bet Thomas Jones, or possibly even Jackie Battle would make excellent backup fullbacks. Also, Lokey’s been getting the short yardage reps. I think Castille is the better of the two, and predict Cox will be cut.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery. Today is a gift, that's why it's called the present...

Shania Twain's #1 Hit

“Castille the one I run too…” That’s the only thing I can think of that’s half way funny with his name. With Cox, the possibilities are endless. I’m pulling for Cox!

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Sep 3, 2010 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions

im serious

did you see how fast he hit the hole as lead blocker? He got into the endzone so fast the tacklers actually game in behind him to try and make the tackle.

:D

Makes all of our opponents scheme for something totally odd.

It'd be interesting to know...

if they actually have a “right 50” with 3 expendables considering who hits the waiver wire.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Sep 3, 2010 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't be surprised if it's more than that

If you’re a backup, I wouldn’t get too comfortable.

by bh13 on Sep 3, 2010 8:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know

pick up more than 2 or 3 guys that haven’t spent any time with your team…you might lose more than you’re gaining just in team chemistry.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Sep 3, 2010 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I could see up to 5

3rd QB, RT, NT, ILB, CB

Odds of getting upgrades at all of those is slim though, so 2-3is probably about right.

by bh13 on Sep 3, 2010 9:03 PM CDT up reply actions

shouldnt be too difficult to find an upgrade 3rd QB

To make a bad day worse, spend it wishing for the impossible.

I've had the same dream every night this week. I think it means that the spring season flopped and my subconscious has gone into reruns.

Mike Richardson is not even close to a surprise

You haven’t been watching him attempt to play if you think otherwise.

I’ve been calling for his head since the San Diego home game last season. The dude is flat out epically terribad. Maybe he’s fast (really no clue), but whatever they ever saw in him clearly doesn’t transfer to the field.

There is a reason he’s gone before they even start the “real” cuts. There was no possible way this guy would make this or any other team.

In wondrous beauty, once again, shall the golden tables stand mid the grass, which the gods had owned in the days of old.
