Chiefs Get Two-Game Roster Exemption For Jarrad Page
The Kansas City Chiefs now have a few more weeks to figure out the Jarrad Page situation. Page signed his restricted free agent tender on Friday meaning he now counts against the roster.
I suggested on Friday that the Chiefs could place Page on the roster exempt list, which would keep him out for the first three games of the season and he would not be paid.
Instead, the Chiefs have requested and received from the league a roster exemption, which is different from placement on the roster exempt list, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
The two big points in all of this: Page will not be counted against the 53-man roster for the first two regular season games and he will be paid for those two weeks.
So Page won't count for the first two games while the Chiefs determine what they'll do with him.
The next key date: Sept. 19, the Chiefs second regular season game.

Pollard?, Pollard?
OK, I’ve finally heard enough. I remember when there were soooooo many complaints about Pollard, right here on this web site. Reader comments, and writer’s columns. You all would say how he was slow to break on pass plays, or runs, or would bite on the play-action, or was always out of position. It went on and on. All of you were caught with egg on your faces, and you’re just jumping on the band wagon now. Pollard was in need of some motivation to play up to his potential. Haley and Pioli gave him that by sending him walking. If management is at fault for anything, it’s having too much faith in his replacements – or not having any when they cut him.

I'm talking about cutting a player instead of trading
not really specificly about pollard just how they handled them

The only thing I miss about Pollard
is that that guy definitely had a nose for blocking punts. What a way to bring instant chaos on the field!
Strive for greatness, Red and Gold.
They let him off the hook.
Can they fine him in this situation? I would guess if they are paying he needs to show up or face fines.

Great thanks
While we should be preparing to defeat the Chargers and Browns with a full team and management focus, now they have to deal with this crap also. Thank you Jarrad Page for taking a full days worth of reveling in a preseason victory away, thank you for hating Kansas City so much you have to pull this crap right before final roster cuts, and thank you to the league for granting this 2 game roster exemption. This will give Pioli enough time to find Page a suitor in the Siberian Football League.
Honestly I woke up this morning friggin pumped that we played good last night, focused on Monday Night and the start of the regular season, and now this is going to gnaw at me. I dont care what we do with Page as long as we get some compensation. I would prefer he is gone and done and with another team when I log back in tomorrow morning.
Doesn’t Jarrad Page know he is messing with my “start of the regular season, final roster shakedown, its a clean slate mojo?” Just get rid of him already Pioli or publically come out, call me at 555-867-5309 and we can figure out what to do to make this situation right!
The picture is a Chiefs pumpkin, yeah that is right a Chiefs pumpkin.
Pioli has know Page wanted out since last season.
The reason this is happening right now is because Pioli let it go this long. Page is going to get what he wants (out of KC). It could have happened months ago. Weren’t we all shocked that Page was given such a high tender. A more realistic one might have gotten a better offer then than what the team is likely to get now.

sigh
I know. I just wanted to mini-rant. I have to be up at two in the morning to work in a stupid run on base so I will miss all the cutdown action and am highly pissed because im that selfish about the Chiefs
The picture is a Chiefs pumpkin, yeah that is right a Chiefs pumpkin.
I hear you,
and my sympathies on the run.
I think Page was a good Chief, and when Haley and Co came in he wanted out. It doesn’t matter if we agree with his decision or not. He never violated the terms of a contract. Not one peep was said about the issue. Page kept it in house for as long as he felt he could. There were no leaks or rants (LJ, Waters, TG).
Was he the best safety ever? No, but I think he was a good Chief for as long as he could be.

agreed 100%
I appreciate his service alot. I have went over every possible scenario where he could work this out with the Chiefs. I really did want to see him out there playing for us this year but I know its not going to happen.
I thought after his tweets about Berry being back there with Flowers, and if him and Carr and Lewis could have blossomed this year he could really have helped put us over the top. I dont know what the beef is between him and Pioli, but its sad and if they could have worked it out it would have been a positive for this team, which I care more about than any one player or coach.

I disagree. Page doesn't get what he wants.
what he wanted was out of KC last year. Instead, it’ll be the regular season a year later before he gets to go to a new team. So even if it doesn’t set an immediate precedent that you can’t complain your way out of town, it sends a message that they’ll drag it out.
In the end, Page is only hurting himself. He hasn’t hurt the Chiefs one bit. And won’t. At least not for the next couple weeks.
Now let’s all sit back and have a nice chuckle at Page’s expense. He and his Antoine Dodson wanna be brother/agent thought they had the Chiefs good by this move. Too bad they’re ignorant to roster exemptions.

What has Page lost in this?
He getting $64K less because he waited to sign? Never fined. Never violated a contract. I’d guess he in or close to game shape and ready to contribute to his next team.
What have the Chiefs gained? They sent a message? What was it, “we don’t mind losing trade value to prove a point?” No one really wins in this, but in the end Page will be out of KC as he wanted and the Chiefs are likely to get less value for him.
by NJ Chiefs Fan on Sep 3, 2010 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions
Dude, they had almost zero trade value.
He was injured last year. He didn’t sign his tender, so he wasn’t in camp. He didn’t play a preseason game to showcase his talent to the teams that might have been interested. If Page wanted traded that bad he should have tried to meet the Chiefs halfway and worked to increase his trade value… I mean shit dude… the Chiefs were giving him 2 million dollars coming off an injury and average play. KC was nothing but fair to Jarrad.

Agree
And to think it was mainly to prove a point is a little ridiculous. They gave 2.7 a chance after all the stuff he pulled.
I think it’s more like they made their decision and then Page made his. There was NO value out there and they moved on. There wasn’t anything they could do until Page signed his tender and he didn’t. Pioli and Co. have enough stuff to do before they can worry about something that until now was out of thier control.

is he playing for a new team?
how does his reputation look?
Is he currently a starting safety for an NFL team?
Red is right. What trade value to Page have to lose? If he had/has any, it isn’t like it changed.
You’re operating with the attitude that the Chiefs HAVE TO move him. They don’t. Eventually, someone will come with fair value and Page will be gone when Pioli gets it.
I think you underestimate the message of sitting a year. Of not being able to move on. To feel comfortable beginning a new chapter elsewhere. How stressful this probably is on him. How that itch and hunger to play is driving him crazy.

He will be starting at safety in the NFL before the end of the season.
I’d bet there’s a trade in the works now otherwise I don’t think Page would have signed, or the league would have given the roster exemption.
by NJ Chiefs Fan on Sep 3, 2010 9:09 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't understand what you mean by saying the league wouldn't have
given the Chiefs the roster exemption.
Its my understanding that because Page waited til he did to sign that that prompted his exemption. I think there is a bit of confusion with the roster exemption and the roster exempt list. My understanding is that they are different. One requiring a formal request weeks ago by the Chiefs, another fully dictated on a restricted free agent not signing his tender until this late.
We could only hope there is a trade. But then again, you’re the one saying the chiefs have lost trade value. So I guess we’ll see.
I’m sure I’m biased, but you have more faith in Page signing his tender because a trade is in place than I do. I’m more convinced it was to force the Chiefs’ hands with roster cuts coming up and his dumb brother/agent not knowing the chiefs had other avenues.

The fact the Chiefs are going with the option that pays Page
when they likely didn’t have to (roster exemption vs roster exempt list) makes me think that something is in the works or the team didn’t think ahead and failed to notify the NFLPA as required.
The team requested a roster exemption for the league and it was granted. I’m thinking Pioli didn’t call up the league office and ask for an exemption because he forgot to notify the NFLPA. I think it’s more likely that he said he was working to move Page and the exemption would allow him time to do that and not punish a bubble player that would otherwise have to be cut.
by NJ Chiefs Fan on Sep 3, 2010 9:31 PM CDT up reply actions
there is no way pioli would forget to do that.
i understand the paying him part as a reason for a trade. but paying him also serves two purposes:
it hurts claims of the chiefs being vindictive,
and it shows other teams that the chiefs aren’t afraid to pay him for nothing…that they aren’t inclined to shop him at all.

The league granted KC's request according to the story.
They wanted to pay Page for the first two games rather than make him sit and pay him nothing for three. This means one of two things: There is already a trade in place and Page will play next week for another team; or, Pioli and Haley are not the jerks so many have made them out to be and they are trying to reconcile the situation with Page because they want him happy and playing in KC. No other options that I can see.
So you're saying
That this is Pioli’s fault for offering him above-market value?
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
I'm saying either
Pioli set the price so high as to ensure Page wasn’t picked up by another team, or he didn’t know what Page’s value was. Either one was a mistake.
by NJ Chiefs Fan on Sep 3, 2010 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions
I'd submit
That a GM shouldn’t necessarily allow a player’s wants to dictate whether or not he tries to keep him.
We had issues at safety. He likely knew already that he was targeting Berry and possibly even Lewis, and envisioned a S tandem of Berry and Page for a year while Lewis learned the ropes.
How was he to know that Page would reject a raise after such a terrible season for him? In his place, I would’ve thought Page was smart enough to realize that the 1.7 (ish) million dollar 1 year deal was the most money he was going to get after playing relatively poorly then being put on IR.
Perhaps he underestimated Page’s desire to leave the team, which i suppose could be viewed as a mistake.
But the smart play for Page would’ve been to sign the tender, play his butt off on an improved defense and be given credit (deserved or not) for mentoring Eric Berry and helping the Chiefs D improve. Then, the next year, he’d hit the open market as a hot commodity.
The mistake he made (IMO) was overestimating Page’s intelligence and underestimating his grudge.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Sounds like both sides are playing nice.
That’s a good thing. Page gets paid, and Chiefs have time to make roster decisions. I expect a trade announcement in the next week or less. Wouldn’t be surprised if Page, Chiefs NFL front office had this set up in advance of the signing.
Yup. And that is good for long-term.
"I ain't lyin' 'bout nothin'."
"Oh? So what exactly are you lying about?"
Just cut his sorry ass, and let's move on.
10 + wins in 2010. Chiefs SHOCK the NFL!!! Mark it down.
Doesn't anyone think maybe Haley did mistreat page?
belittle him in front of peers, treat a grown, tendered player like a child, disregard all prior success, etc etc
I seem to recall a time when our secondary was a strength – page, pollard, flowers, carr – two steals in late rounds there. Great value.
Did everyone forget pages incredible knack for getting int’s against oakland on game scoring drives to win the game? As a freaking rookie?
I was stoked. So what does haley do? Berates the guy and, according to Page, FORCES him to the IR. Page says he was not hurt, can you imagine what you would think of the guy if this where true….Ditching pollard was a horrible move too, but no one wants to acknowledge that. Just ask Playoff bound Houston.
These guys are clueless, I mean, think about it, pioli’s’ first moves were
Firing Herm
Hiring Haley
Getting rid of Pollard
Page to the IR
Getting Cassel
IMO every single one is a miss. Where we now have a good safety in Berry, we could have used that pick on a more important area of concern. Nose comes to mind. And while it’s possible page could have been a poor fit in the system, but if so, then why handle him like this? Just a lot of ego imo, just like whitlock said. All pomp and no circumstance…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNm2rFzdvW8&feature=related
I respectfully completely disagree
Firing Herm – Good
Hiring Haley – Good
Getting rid of Pollard – Good
Page to IR – You think there is a conspiracy? Vrabel and Waters represent the NFLPA, you think they’d let something like that slide?
Getting Cassel/Vrabel – Good

even Patton and Douglas MacArthur got fired in their days
sometimes you have to let go of the old to embrace the new. I dont think all those moves were horrible. The Chiefs are improving, and will soon start tallying up wins. Maybe not so much this year but I personally think having Eric Berry was the start of something good for this team and franchise.
Seeing Berry sit there talking on the phone when we were on the clock immediately put visions in my head of great things to come.
The picture is a Chiefs pumpkin, yeah that is right a Chiefs pumpkin.
Completely agree. The Chief's are going in the right direction and it's not all going to be "rosey."
A lot of big personalities (egos) to deal with and I personally think Pioli and Haley are doing a fantastic job of putting it all together.
Sorry but every single 1 of those are good moves
I guess you have forgotten that Herm Edwards is the reason that we have been a horrible team the last 3 years
I'd put it more on Peterson's paradigm.

Vermeil and Peterson are part of the reason we're where we're at
Vermeil wanting to stick with the veterans without grooming some youth behind them and Peterson trying to put band-aids on the team with (mostly failed) free agent signings left the team with such a lack of talent that Herm pretty much had to blow it up and start over. Just go back and look at all the drafts before Herm got here. Pretty much all of those players are gone now.
Herm had his faults, but bringing in talent wasn’t one of them.
I wish SB Nation had an anti-rec action.
Sorry LHO… but I entirely disagree with every single thing said in this comment.
Bajah07 pretty much nailed it, and to add to that:
Where we now have a good safety in Berry, we could have used that pick on a more important area of concern.
There was NO better pick. Berry is not going to be just a “good” safety. This kid has superb talent and he’s already making a name for himself in the NFL. For three straight games he has stand out made plays. Berry is the kind of draft pick that only comes along once every few years. Please, drop this argument about “we should have taken a nose someone else”. Berry was THE best pick available. Period.
No this isn’t an ego issue, at least not on Pioli’s side. The Chiefs staff wanted to keep Page. They recognized talent. That’s why they tendered him with a 2nd. Unfortunately Jarrad Page threw a big hissy-fit and decided that he didn’t feel like he should have to play by the CBA rules and serve out his contract. Haley is never easy on the players he believes in. He pushes their buttons to try and get them to push their limits. He did it to Fitz and Boldin in ARZ. He did it with Bowe, Charles, and DJ. Why the hell should Page be treated differently? All of those players looked to have gained from Haley’s coaching. He blew his chance to be a part of something special, and I hope he enjoys the rest of his career in Detroit.
I respect your opinion LHO, but you’re wrong.

That’s not true. Page’s contract expired. He was a restricted free agent that was not under contract. He completely followed the CBA.
by NJ Chiefs Fan on Sep 3, 2010 8:38 PM CDT up reply actions
You're right.
He was a restricted free agent, which meant that the team still partially owned his rights. They put a 2nd round tender on him, which came with a $2 million price tag, and gave other teams the chance to get him for that price. Which, IMO is a hell of a vote of confidence considering he was injured half of last year and has never been more than a mediocre safety. Apparently no other team values Page as much as KC, because no one was interested in that trade.
Page was still under obligation to the Chiefs. All he had to do was man up, sign his tender, show up to work, and if he still felt like he wanted out, he could have sat down with Pioli and discussed it man to man. And you know what? Even if Pioli would have said “no”, all Page had to do was play one more year, and he was free to hit the market next year.
What the hell makes Page the exception to the rule? That’s how 95% of the players in the NFL do it, what makes Page one of the lone exceptions?

Per KC Chiefs.com......seven released.
he Kansas City Chiefs announced on Friday that S Jarrad Page has signed his restricted free agent tender. The club also released seven players: TE Leroy Banks, WR Rich Gunnell, G/C Lemuel Jeanpierre, T/G Ikechuku Ndukwe, CB Mike Richardson, LB John Russell and G Dan Santucci.
Page (6-0, 225) has played in 53 games (39 starts) with Kansas City, registering 204 tackles (179 solo), a sack (-3.0 yards), 10 INTs for 69 yards, 24 passes defensed, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and 17 special teams tackles. The Oakland, California native entered the NFL as a seventh-round draft pick (228th overall) of the Chiefs in 2006.
He appeared in 49 games (45 starts) at UCLA, collecting 249 tackles (169 solo), 15.5 tackles for loss, a sack, nine INTs with two TDs and seven passes defensed. Page prepped at San Leandro High School in San Leandro, California.

This 2 week exemption helps the Chiefs with trade value.
I am sure Detroit was not expecting this. They thought they would low ball the Chiefs for Page and we would just cave in. I am sure Detroit would like to start the season with Page. This puts all the pressure back on Detroit or any other team interested. We are back to holding the cards again.
