Kansas City Chiefs: The Good, Bad And The Ugly Against The Packers

Photo

Good morning Kansas City Chiefs fans!

We've got another great post-game tradition for you today - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of the Chiefs' NFL preseason win against the Green Bay Packers

We've got more Good to talk about than Bad and Ugly, which is a fantastic feeling to have while writing this.

Joel and I collaborated on this one - it's all there, after the jump...

Star-divide

The Good

  • Javier Arenas' 44-yard kick return (51-yard punt). LB Cory Greenwood nearly blocked the punt on the play (He might've tipped it).
  • On 3rd and 1, Matt Cassel faked a handoff to the right and a pitched to Dexter McCluster for 14 yards.
  • LB Demorrio Williams had a great sack. He lined up as a right end with his hand on the ground (Playing Tamba Hali's position) and zipped past Green Bay's right tackle to make the sack. It was his third sack in two games.
  • WR Dwayne Bowe, streaking across the field, caught a Matt Cassel pass at the 30-yard line and took it down to the 3 yard line.
  • S Kendrick Lewis broke up a pass on the goal line.
  • S Ricky Price had a better pass breakup. The Green Bay wide receiver essentially had the ball caught in the end zone but Price wiggled his hand in and twisted the football out.
  • Javier Arenas broke up a TD pass in the corner of the end zone.
  • RB Jackie Battle's (TE Tony Moeaki sealed the hole) 50-yard run down the right side of the field.
  • Both Matt Cassel and Brodie Croyle led touchdown drives.

The Bad

  • K Ryan Succop missed 51-yard field goal that hit the upright.
  • Matt Cassel threw an INT but the replay showed that perhaps Dwayne Bowe just missed the ball as it went by his hands. It almost looked like Bowe slipped. It was the first pass of that drive.
  • Green Bay backup QB Matt Flynn hit WR Brett Swain for 77-yards. The Chiefs blew the coverage entirely.
  • Chiefs' DE Alex Magee's penalty in the fourth quarter - hands to the face, automatic first down.
The Ugly
  • Jeremy Horne's backwards run. Dexter McCluster handed off on an end around to the right, he stopped at the right side of the field and went running back to the left. It was a 12-yard loss but Horne was at least 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage at one point.
  • Perhaps sensing his own demise in KC, Horne bumped into McCluster on a kick off return after his run debacle. It almost looked like Horne was trying to nudge his way to the ball to hopefully make a career saving play.
  • It's tough to accept a 300+ yard passing game when your opponent's second string offense is playing your first string defense. Matt Flynn lit the Chiefs' secondary up at times.
Ok. What did we miss?

Easy killer. Our first string defense put up four straight three and outs and then they were sat down. The majority of those yards were again against players that won’t be on this team on Saturday including Mays.

Disagree

Quite literally half (149) of Flynn’s yards came in the first half.

The Chiefs #1 defense was on the bench after the first quarter.

There were cameos by guys like Williams and Mays(if you can call him first string) but otherwise staters as a unit were long done for the night.

And I believe they gave up 12 yards passing in the first quarter

though some of that was on the GB quarterback.

all in the 2nd QTR

when Chiefs were mainly 2nd string the whole time. We did have 1st/2nd string LB’s in, but who is the true 1st string LB’s. Green Bay didn’t have a 1st down in the 1st qtr.

by my estimations...

the first team d allowed 18 yards on four possessions… really? I’ll take that shit all day long.

Our D has been on point thus far. Despite a few missed plays, our D looks like a totally different operation this season. Hopefully it translates in the regular season… Starting with San Diego.

I'm liking out first team defense

They play aggresive, do a good job disrupting the play and put pressure on the quarterback . But God help us if we eveer have a major injury on defense. I don’t think we have the depth that other teams have. Watching Price, Daniels, Bates, and Morgan (I think that was the 3rd string secondary) get torced in the 4th quarter made me think of the Herm-era defense when our QB played 15 yards off the line. It was painful to watch.

Did anyone else notice we put Lokey back in on the final drive to put pressure on Harrell? It’s almost like Haley and Crennel knew we weren’t getting pressure on the QB and they wanting to put Lokey back in to help perserve the win.

With three key members of the Packers offensive attack standing on the sidelines, the Chiefs first-team defense did exactly what you wanted to see them do. Simply put, the first-teamers dominated the Packers offense last night.

The Chiefs forced Green Bay to go three-and-out on their first four offensive sets and the Packers didn’t record a first down until the second quarter when the Chiefs began substituting defenders.

I agree

Honestly, I could care less how many yards passing they give up, when they’re stopping them when it counts — which brings me to a GOOD…

GOOD – GB offense was 0-4 on 4th downs.

Face it, our defense is going to give up some yards. The important thing was they were able to keep GB out of the end zone, mostly. That’s good news, even if it was 2nd, 3rd and 4th string players…

I'll take 300 yards passing on our 2nd and 3rd stringers anyday

if it means that those same players are shuting down the opposing offense on game winning drive time and time again.

Saw some good young DB's who need experience

and when, if they get it, we will have one of the finest secondary’s in the league. As far as the big passing numbers put up against us, some of that was do to scheme like when we blitzed. Lokey led the way where was the ball carrier who was to slow to the line.

That Horne play was definately ugly

probably the ugliest play all preseason. Hopefully it doesn’t cost him a roster spot with us because I really want to see him on this team for some reason.

Good call

I suppose 3 ST guys is too many, although I see Horne as a guy that could maybe develop into a receiver for us.

He’s done better as a WR this preseason than Urban has.

I'd like to see him on the Practice Squad

The way he played in the first couple games I didn’t think he’d make it past waivers if released, but his play yesterday may have actually helped the Chiefs in retaining him. It was all a part of “The Process”.

Predictions:
This year will be better

by jmcgoblue on Sep 3, 2010 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah it could be an option for him on the Practice Squad

but he did catch a TD from Cassel working with the first teamers so hopefully that gives him a leg up, and he always seems to be around the football on Special teams plays.

The picture is a Chiefs pumpkin, yeah that is right a Chiefs pumpkin.

by jrcnc on Sep 3, 2010 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions

True

But he could use some polish & the PS is the perfect place for him to get some with no risk to the team on Sundays. I’m not crazy about Urban either, but considering his experience he probably makes the team better than Horne (at this point anyway). Even if you keep Urban around for half a season to develop Horne on the PS & then move him up, that might be a better option for the team.

Predictions:
This year will be better

by jmcgoblue on Sep 3, 2010 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

He's a small school free agent signee

Just based on that I’d say he probably makes it through.

Predictions:

by jmcgoblue on Sep 3, 2010 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

But what if he doesn't, some other team snatches him up, and he turns out to be an Andy Studebaker, or a Ryan Lilja?

I don’t think keeping him as our 6th WR is too big of a risk. I say keep him over Lawrence. Bowe, Chambers, McCluster, Urban, Copper, Horne.

by MtHammer on Sep 3, 2010 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions

by GenericBrand on Sep 3, 2010 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions

…and probably a mistake from which he learned. I really don’t think it will cost him a roster spot. Especially when Urban hasn’t done a thing all pre-season.

Are we ignoring the fact that Price had no idea where the ball was until it was in the receiver’s hands?

I really don’t. How about if a linemen completely misses a block but somehow recovers and makes a play on the guy that beats him. Sure, he made a good play to stop a sack, but that doesn’t erase the fact that he got beat.

It is just as important for players to recover on the fly from poor positioning and poor reads as it is for them to make the right read from the start.

basically it comes down to...

from a “We Need to Win This Game” perspective:
It was a good play, because the team didn’t score.

from a “Player Evaluation” standpoint:
it doesn’t matter because he got lucky anyway. Same pass 10 times, the receiver is going to catch it 9 times, so it doesn’t give you much hope for future passes that may come his way.

You’re both right.

Not to jump on the other side of my own debate

But I’m gonna.

The only problem with the way he did it was that that way won’t work every time. Next time the receiver may hold on tighter, or manage to shield the ball a little better. It’s obviously better to not let the ball get there in the first place. So it is a decent point that he started off badly there.

He recovered well though, and that’s good.

Good:

Corey Greenwood… I think he showed enough last night to make the 53.. and if not he’s definitely a PS candidate. He had a couple of tackles, almost blocked 2 punts, and on one of those block attempts he got up, ran down the field and laid a killer block on a defender that helped spring Arenas for his big return.

Battle… it’s set in stone. He’s the 3rd RB.

Lewis… made a couple of plays that stuck out, wasn’t really out of position, and I expect him to step into a starting role sooner than later. Again, he’s just been solid.

Charles… even though he seemed to have a hard time running the ball, they got him the ball on some passing plays that he took for big yardage.

The Chiefs seem to have the ability to consistently eat up big chunks of the field with people that aren’t named Charles this year… It was JC and only JC that was a big play threat for us last year, now it seems like we have 4 (JC, DMC, Bowe and Jones)

If the line can open the holes like on Battle’s big play it doesn’t matter. But Williams seemed to have a better ability to extend the run after he was hit. I’d have to see the clips again to say that for sure, but that was the original impression I got from watching the two.

Battle has been doing it all preseason though.

He finds the holes and bursts through them.

I remember one play last night where there was a gap between the RG and RT, and the RT was getting pushed in to close it. Battle hit it and got through, and there was just enough space for him to make it. It was an impressive run, and showed patience and good vision by the back.

Like I said he’s been running like that all year so far.

I liked finally seeing the wildcat...

But IMO WRs need to be removed from that package. 5 OL, 2 TE, 4 RB (counting Dex) would be a real nice sight. Jones can block/carry/catch, Dex can run/throw, Charles can run/catch and Battle could block/run/catch.

Quadruple threat there.

Haha, given the same hole I don’t think any of our RB’s would have not ended up with a big run, which is encouraging to say.

And that’s saying a lot, because I have been one of his biggest critics. He’s like a poor man’s LJ when he was in his prime. Only without the attitude and felony charges.

Maybe

But would any of our RB’s stiff-armed that tackler to the ground the way he did?

The line opened it up for a 10 yard gain, but his tough running made it a 50 yard gain.

OL

Yes, the OL was opening some serious running lanes in last nights game. On Battle’s long run and Williams runs, I was really impressed.

Not sure if this was because we had 2nd string players going up against 3rd & 4th string players or what. They did a great job though.

no reason for Succop to get in the dumps. At least the misses were in the preseason. Anything kicked beyond 50 yards is going to be tough, I dont care who they are. I feel comfortable that if its less than 50 and the game is on the line Succop is going to nail it.

It’s not like he’s badly missing. PKs need preseason too.

Like Colquitt, his best asset is arguably upstairs. He’s not going to become a basket case after a miss or two. Our kicking situation is set for years, and that makes me a happy camper. :)
