Are we Fredo no longer?
So after looking at all the preseason stats, I discovered something that I find amazing. Or at least interesting. Well, ok, I was bored and procrastinating on my schoolwork, and this was an excuse to not do it, all right? You shook it out of me. I DID find something though. But allow me to start off by pointing out the obvious about our defense.
It's been really bad for a while now. And not just bad in the normal sense of the word, but terribly, epically bad. The only way I can describe being a Chiefs fan the last few years is this; remember the look on Fredo's face when Michael told him that he "knew it was him all along"? That is what our Chiefs defense has had us feeling every Sunday for the last few years. We were Fredo.
With the arrival of Romeo Crennel, we've had some hope given to us. However, the failure to take a NT or LB early in the draft left many of us feeling a little let down, including myself. After all, as the ridiculously overused saying goes, "coaches coach and players play". Now, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer (I'm a spoon, actually), but what I get from that saying is that a DC can only do so much with limited talent on the field. And given how bad our defense was last year, we know that we have limited talent.
Or do we?
Let's take a look at our DC from last year, Clancy Pendergast. As we all know, he was the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals in 2008. And boy howdy (yeah, I said boy howdy), were they bad on defense. Bad enough that they were only ranked one place above us in points allowed. And that's bad. There's two specific things I want to focus on here, points allowed and sacks. In 2008 the Cards allowed 26.6 ppg, and had 31 sacks.
As I've said, the ppg allowed was one of the worst in the league, and the sacks put them right in the middle of the pack.
Move forward to 2009. The Cardinals now give up 20.3 ppg, moving them up from 25th to 15th in league rankings, and accumulate 43 sacks, which moves them up from 15th to 6th.
Both marked improvements. And this was from a team that was moving from Pendy's "hybrid" defense to a more traditional 3-4 defense. Adjustments are always tough, and they flourished (relatively speaking). Not too bad, right? They must have added some serious talent to make an upward move like that, right?
Well, no. They changed CB (from Roderick Hood to Bryant McFadden). And they had a couple of their bench guys from 2008 playing full time (Calais Campbell at DE, Clark Haggans at RILB). So really, the only player upgrade they had was at CB, and McFadden (while decent) is no world-beater.
So what changed? Well, I think you know...
I've said this before, but I'm putting it out there in more detail today just to confirm what we already knew. Clancy Pendergast is a terrible, terrible defensive coordinator. His old team gave up an entire touchdown less and had an additional dozen sacks just by... well, NOT having him as a defensive coordinator. The old "addition by subtraction" method rings true here in a huge way.
Now he's out of KC. And Crennel's in. Now I don't know how we're going to be on defense this year, but after looking at our preseason (yes, I am indeed coming to the point. You made it!), I saw a reason for hope.
In roughly 7 quarters of action, our first team defense has given up two touchdowns. Two. One of those was on a drive that started on our own 22 (thanks, JC. I love you, but wow was that an ugly play). The other was on a 53 yard play that, while discouraging, was basically a fluke play enabled with a RARE misstep by Brandon Flowers.
Now, to be fair, Aaron Rodgers may have changed that last night, but we can't talk about what never happened. We can only talk about what HAS happened. And what's happened is that our first team defense has given up two TD's in almost 2 full games of action!
And it's not like this has been against complete and total scrubs. Atlanta has a talented offense, and so does Philly. Even taking Rodgers (I know, that's a big deal, but still) out, the Packers have an excellent group of receivers. And we gave up one touchdown to those teams. And again, that lone TD came after our defense was put in a terrible position on our own 22.
What does this mean? Maybe nothing. But I know that when I see our defense on the field now I'm watching our guys to make plays, not waiting for the other team to make them. This Chief fan, at least, is no longer Fredo.

MN, I am loving the
new attitude of the D as well man. These guys are for real tryin to take somebody’s head off every play. Berry and Lewis give me a lot more confidence because those guys are great at centerfielding on pass plays.
It also looks like Haley was meaning to fire DJ up, but ended up turning DWilliams into a monster.
Now if we can get the same tenacity on offense……
I was mad as $#%@ when we drafted Dexter McCluster and now I'm ordering his jersey......oh the irony! Go Chiefs!

That was a nice unintended consequence :) Maybe DW will fire up the play of DJ now

I think we can find snaps for both
But Williams has definitely outplayed DJ. Even better, he’s starting to show some flashes of being that second pass rusher that our team has been DYING for.

If Haley offers to take you fishing
The answer is NO!
In wondrous beauty, once again, shall the golden tables stand mid the grass, which the gods had owned in the days of old.
I'll be concerned enough
If he tries to kiss me.

Remember May? where some defenive player said they loved Romeo
because they knew, KNEW, where they were playing in this defense. After a confusing coordinator left town and a real pro arrived, these guys have gained some pride. The biggest thing this preseason is the guys are making TACKLES. Which means plays, sometimes big plays. Sure you can point out some missed ones, but not like last year which was pathetic.
Very true
Now if we can just find some way to make sure Haley doesn’t try to make Romeo start Mays, we’ll be all set.
Is anyone here morally opposed to threatening a man’s family over a coaching decision? Too far? We could try a stern letter too, I suppose…

Just don't forget to bring Luca...

I gotta agree also.
Crennel even has DJ staying home and minding the store more often. But yeah, solid tackling, holding position on the backside of running plays, all looks good to me.
I used to get SOOO frustrated on all the bootlegs and reverses that lit us up in years past. Over pursuit to the ball got us bit badly in those days.
That is another noticeable difference
Good call.

Romeo brought stability
These guys now know where to line up and their responsibilities, unlike when Clancy coached them. I am most impressed by the ability to tackle which so far is far better than I’ve seen the last four years. When they’re tackling they’re making plays, which is seen in the stats. Less points scored against them, third down stops and sacks because we were in a position to attack the QB. Yes a new attitude is happening, all for the good.
I've seen flag football teams
That tackle better than we have over the last few years. That said, you’re totally right about the responsibilities being more clear now.

Was looking at the Chiefs preseason stats at NFL.com
The Chiefs D has given up just One running play of 20+ yards in four games.
That is huge!
Rec on the post MN

Thanks Steve
And great find on that stat. I wish that I’d seen that. Why are you upstaging me? :)

And I agree, it’s nice to be excited rather than scared.

Man it was scary....
Just waiting for that 3rd and 8 15 yard pass to come. Over and over and over……and over
It literally ruined games for me
Because no matter what happened on 1st and 2nd down, I knew that teams had about a 75% chance of converting on 3rd… no matter what the distance.

great way to break it all down. Good to know that our first team D has only given up two touchdowns. Watching the bubble players last night really looked like our first team D from the past couple of seasons, and the first team looks like a completely different group all together!
The picture is a Chiefs pumpkin, yeah that is right a Chiefs pumpkin.
Thanks jrcnc
I hope they keep it up.

Can't you just see it in both of their eyes
That they both know how this is gonna end?

Rec'd, good read MN
I heard something on the radio today that made sense to me. (I can’t remember who said it, or I’d give them credit). He said that if the Chiefs can not give up the big play, which usually involves being in position and good tackling then it forces teams to put together long drives. Well at some point in a 15 play drive Romeo is going to find a way to get you. A sack, turnover, whatever. His point was that the players have to do their jobs for us to be good, but if they do, then Romeo’s schemes will eventually make something happen. I think we’ve seen that be the case in the pre-season with the first string D. We’ve given up some drives, but at some point we caused a negative play that was too big for them to overcome and they would have to punt/kick a FG. I hadn’t really thought of it that way, but it does make sense.

Look at the 2009 Chiefs
15 Rushes Allowed of 20+ yards
4 Rushes Allowed of 40+ yards
44 Passes Allowed of 20+ yards
16 Passes Allowed of 40+ yards
The pre 2010 preseason rush Defense is very good in those stats
The Pass Defense has allowed 11 20+ yard passes and 2 40+ yard passes
We have some work to do yet :)
Ninja Ass
Oh I know we're not there yet
but I am curious about how many of those 11 came when Flowers, Carr, and Berry were on the field. My guess is only a couple.
"There is no charge for awesomeness" - Kung Fu Panda
I looked at the game log
And only 1 play of 20+ yards (Flowers whiff against TB) came against our starting D.
I checked the 1st quarter of ATL and GB, the 1st half of TB, and the 1st 3 quarters against PHI.
And I found 1 play over 20 yards.
That would mean that all of those plays you mention but one came against our subs :)

Shaun Shariff laughed at me this morning when I sent a text saying:
“This defense is for real. We know that”
I think it’s pretty apparent… it’s like night and day compared to last year…
They’re making tackles. They’re covering receivers. The safeties aren’t giving up huge plays. They’re making tackles. They’re getting pressure on the QB. They’re making tackles. The LBs are making plays. The DL is controlling the OL. They’re making tackles. The defense is noticably faster as a whole. Eric Berry is awesome. Oh, and did I mention they’re making tackles?
What I’ve seen is a disciplined, tough defense. Go back and watch some of Crennel’s Patriot defenses. A tough, hard nosed, disciplined unit is what you saw. And they made their tackles.

they’re making tackles, I mean they are really truly making friggin tackles!

this year they are not this guy!

The difference is speed
Remember last night when Flowers took three steps to close on the short pass? Initially out of position, but able to make it up in a hurry. Same with Berry on another play. He just looks like a red bullet out there.
Yup, there's a reason all that picking us apart over the middle started after Berry left the game.

I agree that players are playing better but...
Has anyone mentioned play calls? 3 of those sacks were from proper scheme alone. Not to mention countless others he called right. If someone has already mentioned this, I apologize. Didn’t read every comment. The players are playing better as all of you have said. More importantly. They have attitude. They have comradery. This is the first time we have seen a “team” in a long time. Also, we have yet to see the “real” Chiefs D or O.
1st team defense vs the Packers gave up a whopping....
8 yards rushing, 14 yards passing, and 0 first downs.
The Chiefs will see a return to respectability in 2010, emerging as the front runner in the AFC West! ....And I'll quantify that however I choose. Ahem.
Even without them playing Rodgers
That’s very, very impressive.
