The head football coach visited Adam Schein and Rich Gannon on The Sirius Blitz this afternoon around 1:15 KC time. I took notes during the interview and after the jump will share the most interesting portions of the 7 minute talk.
The interview started with both Adam and Rich giving Todd credit for his game-planning against the 49ers on Sunday. They specifically mentioned the wildcat formations and the long TD pass to Bowe that was set up with plays out of that formation earlier in the game.
The first question for Coach Haley was kind of disappointing because everyone who really follows the Chiefs knows Coach doesn't answer health related inquiries. Todd did say that Coach Weis didn't have anything life threatening and gave a lot of credit to his other staff members that have picked up the slack while Charlie deals and continues to deal with his situation. The most interesting point he made about this issue was he said, "Our staff has been preparing and dealing with this news for about a week." This is interesting because that would imply that some of the offensive game planning for the 49ers was done in Charlie's absence. However, I think Coach Weis had tons to do with every decision made on Sunday.
Haley was asked about the rookies and the contributions they have made thus far. You could tell Todd was genuinely happy to talk about this group and made it clear that he was talking about all the 1st year guys (draft picks, free agents, etc.). He said all these guys have come in a really bought into the system and the most important part is they believe they can win now and be a big part of the reason why.
Because Haley wouldn't mention anyone by name, the following question was, "Talk about McCluster." The response was the most interesting of the conversation. Haily said, "Dexter is a unique talent and size and I have to remind Dexter everyday of his size. You know, we have a clone on the defensive side that does a lot of the same things Dexter does in Arenas." He went on to say how it's his job to make sure Dexter is fresh because every coach on the team wants him to contribute to what they are doing.
Next, Rich asked about the QB. Haley really likes Matt Cassel and I don't believe he speaks highly of him because he knows he is the Chiefs only viable option at QB. I think that Coach Haley truly believes Matt Cassel is going to be a good NFL QB. He stated how important last season was for Matt Cassel and that he got through the difficult times with his head held high and learned from every experience. He stated that Matt Cassel hasn't stopped learning every day. In typical Haley fashion he said, "Our goal is to get better everyday and Matt Cassel has done that." He went on to say that you can even see it in his first three games and if he believes that the way Matt works he will continue to get better everyday. He also commented on how their personal relationship has grown and how Matt is really committed to being the best QB he can be.
Adam stated that the Chiefs D was his biggest surprise of the young season and asked Haley to comment on Romeo's presence on the sidelines. Haley said that there are not a whole lot of new faces on the defensive side so Romeo's presence has been huge. One of the more interesting things I came away with was Coach Haley stated that he tried to bring Romeo on board last season but Romeo wasn't ready. Haley said our D-Coordinator is one of the best defensive minds in the league today.
Last question was about the bye week schedule. Haley stated that the bye week comes at a perfect time for his team. The Sirius crew argued a little that the momentum had been stopped and asked if he was worried about that. Haley responded, "We have a lot of work to get done...the process hasn't stopped and our players know that." He said they had a really great practice today and mentioned moving some players into coaching roles and the importance he puts on thinking outside the box to make working hard as fun as possible.
Well that's all I got. I hope people that didn't hear this enjoy the summary.
