Is The Chiefs Bye Week Perfect Timing Or A Momentum Killer?

Photo

I've heard a few Kansas City Chiefs fans use the words "momentum killer" when talking about the upcoming bye week.

As you know, the Chiefs are coming off three straight wins (four dating back to last season) including their most recent 31-10 spanking of the 49ers. So clearly momentum can be considered a big factor here.

So is the bye week perfect timing or a momentum killer?

My take: It's perfect timing. The Chiefs are going up against the Colts and Texans in the upcoming weeks and the way they've game-planned, having two weeks to prepare for Indy could make this a very interesting game. I'm not saying the Chiefs are going to win -- they won't be favored -- but to me it's perfect timing that you have a bye week before the toughest two-week stretch on the schedule.

The Chiefs are a little banged up with guys like Tyson Jackson and Ryan O'Callaghan recovering from injury (as well as Javier Arenas who was nicked up on Sunday).

I really don't know where most folks stand on this so I'm looking forward to the results of this poll.

great timing

not for the injuries but for the extra week to prepare for one of this season’s toughest opponents, away no less.

Yep

if we were playing the Bills I’d say it’s a momentum killer, but the team needs all the time it can get to have a chance at beating the Colts.

Absolutely right

Only chance we have of beating the Colts is to have a flawless game plan and game prep (Or of course, pull a Bernard Pollard)…perfect timing.

I'm actually worried about Pollard intentionally pulling a Bernard Pollard in the Houston game

I wouldn’t put it past him to go for a few cheap shots in the game.

Na, it was a legal hit at the time

But Pollard did accuse the Chiefs of blackballing him after he was released, and I wouldn’t put it past him to try and get even.

Exactly.. two weeks to prepare for Peyton

And remember Crennel owned Peyton when he was D-coordinator as the colts and pats played each other once (sometimes twice when you add the playoffs) per year for a while so he’ll be able to design something good.

Offensively, I’m not worried about moving the ball on them as they can’t stop the run and that’s KC’s biggest strength.

by golfbard on Sep 28, 2010 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I think this is what the coaches are here for.

It can be a momentum killer if it gets in there heads.
With indy coming up being able to have cassel and others look at tapes for two weeks and a live game can do nothing but help.

by PSUkegreen on Sep 28, 2010 12:30 PM CDT reply actions

I called it a momentum killer...

I hope there’s not a dropoff in momentum after the best overall game they’ve played in years…

then again, it’ll be nice to get O’Call and TJax back from injury and have 2 weeks to prepare for the toughest 2 games of the year.

I’m expecting 2 losses in the next 2 games, with or without the bye… but, maybe the extra time gives the coaching staff the ability to get them ready to steal one or two of these wins?

the preparation time is going to be invaluable

if they split

the bandwagon will be riding low… too many people jumping on.

If they win both, then I’ll have to start predicting an 11-5 or 12-4 year… which would be scary

If they beat IND and HOU

Who would you predict to give us those 4 or 5 losses in our remaining 11 games?

IND and HOU are so superior to every opponent we face afterward (besides maybe TEN) that if we beat both of them I’m thinking “holy crap, we’re gonna win 13 or 14 games!”

Yea if we go 5-0

Our record should at least be 13-3. Only teams I could see beating us would be SD, Denver at home, and Tennessee. That said I don’t see us going 5-0.

We may have an extra week to prepare...

But teams generally come out of the bye week and play rusty, and the Chiefs have a history of starting flat.

We CANNOT afford to come out flat against an offense as dangerous as the Colts.

Momentum killer got my vote.

by SupremeChief on Sep 28, 2010 12:31 PM CDT reply actions

They won't be flat. They're 3-0, hungry and being well coached.

This is perfect because it gives the team time to really get ready for one of the best QBs of all times.

I agree with this.

Most of the current team has lost a lot lately. They will be focused for the next win.

by NJ Chiefs Fan on Sep 28, 2010 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure what the Chiefs' history before Haley/Weis/Crennel has to do with anything.

That said, I’d always prefer the bye week to come as close to the middle of the season as possible. Getting a couple guys healthy doesn’t concern me, because there will be other injuries later. And yeah, it’s great to get an extra week to prepare for the Colts, but that will only count for something if we win.

So there wasn’t really an option for me, but “momentum killer” was closest.

by Tarkus on Sep 28, 2010 1:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Just saying it's a common trend with the Chiefs to come out flat after the bye.

Heck, it seems to be a pattern around the NFL. If you want my opinion, I think coaching has a lot to do with it. I don’t think this coaching staff will allow their players to slack. I look for them to come out strong. It’s just a rational fear I have based on qualitative data.

by SupremeChief on Sep 28, 2010 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree

The additional preparation will still count if we keep the game close. The most important thing from these next two weeks is we don’t lose confidence by getting dominated.

Great Timing.

An extra week to heal and and prepair for our 2 most difficult games on the schedule…timing doesnt get much better.

by DivineGrace on Sep 28, 2010 12:31 PM CDT reply actions

Heal?

If you’re worried about healing after three weeks, imagine how you’ll feel after 13 weeks. It’s not like the Chiefs are getting all their injuries out of the way. There will be more to come. That’s the NFL.

Don't worry

We’ll get a bye week in January too, while the mediocre teams are stuck playing in the wild card round for the right to get their asses kicked at Arrowhead the following week ;)

having a bye week this early is rarely a good thing

It’s almost always better to have it later in the season when there are more nagging injuries built up.

While the extra time to prepare for the Colts is nice, it’s nice against any opponent…, for instance, smack dab in the middle of the season (week 9) would have been nice to prepare for @Denver.

posted this on Joel's injury thread that mentioned Babb's Twitter:

Here’s a list of the honorary coaching staff: WR – Urban, Copper, Chambers. RB – Jones. OL – Waters, Wiegmann, Lilja. TE – Pope.
DB – McGraw, Flowers, Daniels (oddly). DE – Smith, Edwards. LB – Williams, Hali, Vrabel

I love this idea for the bye week. We have a little more scheduling breathing room, so we can do some less conventional techniques.

This bye week is great

Weis and Crennel have a wealth of experience going against the Colts. Giving them 2 weeks to watch film, game plan, watch their next game live, could truly benifit us. If they can come up with a solid running scheme, a solid pass defense scehem, then we may have a shot at this game.

Unlike in the past two games, the focus will switch to our pass defense. That young secondary needs this 2 weeks to prep for the best QB in the game.

Perfect timing

Our D Coordinator, who has owned Manning in his career, will have 2 weeks to draw up a blueprint to slow manning down. On O they just can’t stop the run so just some fine tuning needs to be done there. I smell an upset

I’m not sure why some people insist on calling that a double reverse. It wasn’t even really a single reverse. More like an end-around followed by a flea-flicker.

Perfect timing. They can get some minor things straightened out, it appears that we

will be about 100% healthy and really get ready for the Colts. I thought that the Chief’s would beat the Chargers and now, I really believe, that they will beat the Colts too. The rookies are not rookies any more. They still have a lot to learn but with the playing time that they’ve been getting, they are way ahead of the average rooks.

One less week of film for Manning to look at.

Extra time, not only for the coordinaters to come up with specific plans to exploit matchups, but also for the players to work on the execution of those plans.

by NJ Chiefs Fan on Sep 28, 2010 12:46 PM CDT reply actions

Good timing

I’m hoping it gives the team time to heal up and to work/plan to beat the Colts. Given the way our defense has stepped up their game, I think its possible to hold the Colts to under 24ish points. Our offense saw a decent defense in SF. The Colts have a very good defense, but I think they are suspect in the secondary. I think we can score around 21ish points. I really think this could be a tight game. Its either that or it will be a blow out. We dont play well against Indy. Manning even more so. We’ll see. As for now, I’m optomistic.

by Brian69 on Sep 28, 2010 12:48 PM CDT reply actions

not a great time.

They can prepare more, get a few guys off the injury list. But any player will tell you after a big win or a big loss they want to get back on the field as soon as they can to keep it rolling, or to rectify it.

I won’t be surprised if the Chiefs have a few quirks that cause the Colts some problems. But this team will have to play their best game yet to beat the Colts. The Chiefs have two rookie safeties and the possibility of starting their 6th defensive back, and it goes without saying Manning can hit a few big plays even if you have great coverage.

Big test in two weeks.

by tenacious rdc on Sep 28, 2010 12:53 PM CDT reply actions

I like the bye week

Only because it’s the Colts. Anyone else on our schedule, except the Texans, could prompt the team to take it easy and let the rust build.

This is a young team wanting to silence the skeptics, they’re looking at the Colts as their chance. I fully expect this team to be practicing balls to the wall and putting in extra time in the class room, weight room, and film room these next two weeks.

I fond some solace in the fact that Peyton never figured out the Pats until Crennel left, and also knowing that our running game could possibly have a field day and keep Peyton off the field.

I don't like the timing of the bye week at all

I don’t see us beating Indy one way or another, so the slight edge we get by having an extra week to prepare, is not near enough to offset the downside of having such an early bye and making our players go the next 13 weeks without a break.

If anyone is interested, as of 09, teams coming off of byes win 52.7% of the time. I’d certainly take that slight edge if we were going into a game that I thought would be really close, or more winnable…regardless, it is what it is, hopefully we get in some work on the next few games, not just the Colts.

So yeah, I voted for momentum killer. Hopefully I’m proven wrong in Indy.

It can’t possibly hurt to have an extra week to prepare for Peyton and I’m willing to bet they will install a few things for Houston while they are at it. Momentum is an illusion that people like to throw out...
