VIDEO: Chiefs DE Shaun Smith Grabbing Incident

For the second straight week, an opponent accused Kansas City Chiefs DE Shaun Smith of grabbing them below the belt.

In Week 1, it was Cleveland Browns C Alex Mack who said Smith grabbed a part him that would draw a penalty. Smith said to the (other) AP of the alleged incident, "I don't recall doing anything like that."

In Week 2, it was San Francisco 49ers RT Anthony Davis.

I think we can see in the video that Smith looks like he's grabbing what we think he's grabbing and Davis reacts to it.

Is it enough for the league office to issue a fine? We'll see on Friday Fine Day.

(H/T bfett81 for the video)

Personally..

I dont think its really that clear.

You never see Smith’s hand on the guys balls and theres a span of about 1 second where it looks like his hand COULD be grabbing the guy.

Whenever you’re blocking and pushing a guy back, and you begin to fall, of course your hands are going to slip, but you keep pushing until you can’t push no more. Looks to me like he was pushing, and his hand MAY have come into contact with the guys junk for a moment.

To me, it looks like Davis is more pissed off that Smith shoved him back pretty good and Davis couldnt do anything on the play

by Petey14 on Sep 29, 2010 12:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Blocking

isn’t the right word because obviously Smith isnt a blocker..

But my point is that when you’re pushing a guy and you’re going down, you dont have time to think about where you put your hands, you just put them whereever they land.

I didnt grab anybody’s nutsack but heres an example. In a basketball game, I’m chasing after a guy who stole the ball and was runnin down court for the go-ahead layup. I’m sprinting as fast as I can and catching up to the guy when all of a sudden (for no apparent reason) I lose my balance and begin to fall forward. Naturally, i stick my hands out to catch myself and incidentally, my hands go out and pretty much push this guy. He tumbles and the whistle blows.

Now, in my head, I’m thinking it was clearly an accident, until I realized the ref gave me a technical. After the game, watching it on video, it looks like I intentionally leaned forward to push this kid. Video evidence may show what happened, but does’t always tell the whole truth.

Ouch

Knock it off, Shaun. There was no reason to do that there, other than a cheap shot.

I get that he’s trying to get into a young player’s head, but c’mon…

Really...no reason for this

Smith has been playing pretty well. Why punch a dude in the nuts? Or grab a guy’s balls in the “pile”? Totally not necessary. He’s just making himself, and the team, look bad.

And be careful out there Shaun Smith. What comes around, goes around.

Chiefs will. But...will Cassel?

it's low-class, dirty and needs to stop a week ago

this is NOT the kind of player I want on ANY team or representing my city … I’m disgusted, disappointed not only in Smith, but in Haley and Crennel for allowing it to continue

and more, I’m disappointed in how many APers think it’s all just ha-ha funny and pass it off with a lamea$$ joke … if this was a Bronco or a Raider or anyone from any team OTHER than our own doing this, the entire AP community would be up in arms about …

and now, as reported (below) by RA_ChiefsFan, it’s drawing national attention in a horribly bad way … and yet here we have people b*tching that our poor, poor “Chiefs get no respect” … guess what, this is NOT respectable, it’s wronger than wrong and I’m disgusted … not only should the league fine and suspend him, I’m calling here for the Chiefs to do the RIGHT thing and fine him 2 games worth of his salary for this disgusting BS

Not saying I necessarily agree with it either Ups...

But this kind of stuff goes on all the time in the NFL. Biting, gouging, nut grabbing… when teams get into these piles like the one on the video above, this stuff happens. Mike Vrabel has been accused of this stuff too. Mike seems like a classy guy, and has brought nothing but good to this organization. When players are on the field, this stuff isn’t uncommon. It’s a man’s game and if the opposition isn’t smart enough to wear their protective gear, then there will be players that will exploit that. It’s just the nature of the game.

that doesn't make it RIGHT ... nor does it mean we (or anyone else) should APPROVE of it

yet we do by passing it off with jokes, or comments like “it happens all the time” … with that kind of attitude, of course it does, we allow it and encourage it (hey, we can make jokes about it … oh cool, a bit on Leno or Letterman about it, we’re famous now!)

Cheating is a pretty harsh comment.

It’s a penalty and its against the rules. What makes this so dirty from a late hit on a quarterback or someone who is constantly horsecollaring or face masking?

Or taunting? Or anything really…

Oh I know. It’s because people are so homophobic the thought of a football player purposely touching a ball sack makes them up in arms. OMG ITS SO EFFFIN GUHROSSS!!!

Dirty, yes I’ll agree. It should stop for both the chiefs and his own good. Disgusting, degrading, morally wrong, cheating, BLAH blah BLah…..not so much.

Get over yourself

No one is raising the issue about homophobic except you since it is apparently on your mind. The difference between face masking or horsecollar is those are normally not intentional misconduct but more of the result of reaction or the movement of the play. Cheating by intentionally grabbing some guy’s crotch is a lowlife play.

How about you get over this issue. I don’t condone dirty play and I think Smith deserves any kind of fine the NFL wants to hand him down. I also hope he doesn’t do it again.

But I’m not going to get up in arms about it and suggest that he doesn’t belong on the team like UPs has been doing.

I’m not sure you can say it could have been taken care of a week ago – by the time Mack reacted to the supposed infraction by blasting DJ after the whistle blew, it was several plays later…maybe even a series later. But, during the SF game, the reaction happened immediately, and Haley responded.

I can understand your not liking it and think it merits a fine

but two weeks pay? C’mon man. That’s ridiculous. Players get fined $5-$15k for helmet to helmet hits that can cause serious brain trauma, and here, we’re talking about a relatively harmless crotch grab meriting a more severe sanction from the NFL than anything other than off the field rape, DUI, or steroid abuse.

Its football.

Get over it.

Some guys play dirty. Personally, I’m glad we have someone who does. If you can get into a rookie’s head with some extra-curricular shit, DO IT. He has given opposing offenses 30 yards of penalties, that makes it tough for them to move the chains and stay on the field…which makes it tough for them to score…which makes us a better defense.

If you’ve ever played football you know this goes on ALL the time.

I wholeheartedly approve of it. Its a game, do what you can to win.

I hope we get a bad reputation.

As in we are a bunch of crazed individuals that will do anything to win. If that makes the other team think about it for just 5 minutes that takes away from their serious game preparation.

You think those defenses Marty had in the 90’s were choir boys? Or what about the Steel Curtain? Those guys were NUTS, and probably grabbed some too.

If you aren’t willing to get a little “nasty” you shouldn’t be on defense. That’s the way the game is played.

So used to be shots to the head

That is not about how game is played unless you have to cheat to cover your inability as a player. Players used to claim it was also how the game was played to plant their helmet into the back of the head of a player down on the field. That was also lowlife and finally, the league had to stress how lowlife it was to get chumps to stop. Playing the game is about outplaying your opponent, not about seeing how much the player can get away with cheating. The fact that you think this is okay and want more players to do the same, says alot about you. None of it good.

by buglerchris on Sep 28, 2010 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Hmmm...I'll take a guess that you never played football.

Its not “cheating”, its dirty, but not cheating. Cheating is putting helium in the ball (does that even work?), cheating is taking roids, cheating is paying off the referees.

Throwing a punch at a guy’s balls is just dirty, but it sends a message too. Think that was in Davis’ head the rest of the game? Think that threw him off his game? Hell yes to both. Ball-punching is not the only way to do it, shit-talking, eye-gouging, throat grabbing, and the occasional middle finger (thanks Vrabel) are other iterations. Some guys do it, others don’t.

In my opinion, granted I’m a Defensive Lineman, all those rules to protect QB’s and “defenseless” receivers are bullshit (no helmet-to-helmet contact?? Thats why you wear them, so you can hit somebody!!). I used to get cheap shotted all the time, think the ref’s see every chop block? Hardly.

I think the only thing this says about me is that I actually played the sport (at a competitive level) and I know what goes on in between the lines. The only “cheap-shots” that are frowned upon by players (ALL players) are ones to intentionally injure (Knees, ankles). I’d rather get my balls yanked on than have some guy try to roll up my knee any day of the week.

So get real and don’t judge me cause i have a pair and actually played the sport that you think you can comment intelligently on.

Well, whether he did or he didn't, now opposing players are

going to be looking in Shaun Smith’s direction and thinking about covering their nuts. They may even take pregame precautions such as wearing a cup. But they are going to be thinking about their nether regions rather than concentrating on football.

Taking a page out of Vrabel’s book.

Just a matter of time before Smith gets taken out “accidently” if he keeps it up. 1 Chop block is all it takes.

I actually don't mind that kind of thing

I don't necessarily condone dirty play...................

but……………….I can remember plays by another Smith (Neil) such as getting up from the pile and stepping on a Denver Bronco’s hand. So, Neil Smith is held in great respect by many Chiefs fans, but let’s not forget that Neil could play a little dirty at times, as well. It happens. It is football, and some players are just that way. Man, if you guys can’t remember some dirty stuff that happened to you when you were playing, then I guess I must have just played against some nasty players because I can sure remember the dirty stuff.

Protect your balls... Wear a cup.

It’s not like this is breaking news that balls are sensitive. If they don’t wear the proper gear than its their own damn fault for exposing themselves. Come prepared or get squeezed. Btw, I expect the raiders to play dirty… also not breaking news. Well just have Shaun call you when he wants moral advice.

by dbowefosho on Sep 28, 2010 10:54 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Well duh...

When it’s the other team doing it you obviously won’t condone it. How do you think all the Pats fans felt about Rodney Harrison a few years back? Do you think the Cardinals fans hated Conrad Dobler… or do you think they were happy he was on their team? Last year Hines Ward was voted SI’s dirtiest player. Find me a Steelers fan that wouldn’t take Ward over almost any WR in the league. Titans CB Cortland Finnegan said he wants to be the dirtiest player in the NFL. Hines Ward said of him:

"He has a little nastiness, a little dog in him. I like that," Ward said of Finnegan. "Every time I watch him, I kind of smile. We are still competitors. We are going to go out there and compete and at the end of the game shake hands and wish each other good luck and go on about our business.

This isn’t uncommon Ups. This goes on all around the league. Does that make it right?… No. But it is part of the game. It’s a bunch of grown men playing for million dollar contracts and the chance to win the most prestigious trophy in all of sports. They’re going to be cheap shotting each other sometimes. They’re going to try and do and say things that will give them an edge.

Seriously?

That fast?

Ridiculous. This is something that happens all the time at all levels of football. Doesn’t make it OK, but what it DOES make it is a little more understandable. He’s been allowed to do it his whole career, other players have done it to him, etc.

Yelled at? Already done during the game. Even the announcers commented that Haley was in his ear hollering at him right afterward.

FIned? Maybe so, I personally would like to see it done, because I want the game (and our team’s rep) clean.

But Kicked off the team? Too much for too little. If it happens again after disciplinary action, fine, do what you have to do.

But if we were to toss every player off our team that’s ever taken a cheap shot in the pile, I absolutely promise you we’d lose every single guy on our team. And we wouldn’t be able to sign a single other player in the NFL (except maybe some guys that have never been in a pile).

So we'd better

Kick Kendrick Lewis off the team as well. After all, he hit a defenseless receiver and got flagged for us.

A hundred times more dangerous than what Smith did, and just as cheap.

He’s making us look bad! We’re turning into the Raiders! Cut him NOW!

Sorry

I thought it was clear enough. :)

All I’m trying to say is that although it’s not good and should be punished, I think cutting him at this point would be excessive.

I’d be willing to bet that after all this publicity Haley has torn him a new one all over again.

If it happens a 3rd time, especially after getting harped on by the coach, then it’s time to seriously consider cutting him.

Did anyone see the game last night? It looked like Peppers took a shot to the junk...

He was out for a couple of plays kind of bent over on the sideline.

This morning Bob Fescoe got a text from “a former Chiefs player” that said no one wore a cup.

Look… a lot of people might not like how Smith’s playing, but there’s an easy solution. Wear the proper protective gear… especially when you play the Chiefs. Bottom line is that Smith is drawing penalties from these guys for retaliation, he’s getting them stirred up, and it’s resulting in wins.

Not only that… but this kind of stuff goes on in every game, all the time. Maybe not nut punching, but players are doing things to each other to gain a competitive advantage. That’s just the way it is.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct is pretty much a judgement call.

Yes, Shaun will get penalized and/or fined if he keeps this up. “Giving ’em the business” is not tolerated.

It would just be a personal foul.

What makes the junk off-limits? Because most of us are caught up on some Freudian Retention Complex? Because it is very sensitive?
Completely asinine. No body part is off limits when making contact and delivering or driving through a block or tackle. We make exceptions for the head and neck because those can kill or paralyze you.

I know over the years that this type of thing happens

especially in fumble piles. Stinky himself (Mark Schlereth) talks about the punching, grabbing, gouging, etc that happens. These platers are not nice. Watch footage of tackles from HOF players and you will see they weren’t playing 2-hand tag.

Don't be silly,

There are real dangers in football… junk-grabbing, spitting, and eye-gouging are not among them. A hard hit in the NFL is approximately the force delivered by a bowling ball dropped from 13 stories high.
If another player loses his cool over harmless, but psychologically affronting acts, then that player must work on his mental game.

Ray Lewis was on the Dan Patrick Show today.

He didn’t seem to be aware of the accusations against Smith, but he was asked if that kind of thing goes on in piles. And he responded pretty matter of factly that oh yeah, that and all kinds of other stuff. He acted like it was no big deal.

Wow.

I think this stuff is getting a little ridiculous.

I get that it’s dirty, and stupid. But now I see a few people saying he shouldn’t be on the team.

Let’s hold our horses a little bit and see what happens from here, shall we? I mean, a little perspective folks… A cheap shot is definitely NOT cool, but perhaps we should maybe consider not treating this like the worst thing that’s ever been done.

Again, NOT condoning the action. But let’s not overreact to the “OMG they might burn the Koran!” level….

It needs to be dealt with, but from what I’ve found, this has never been an issue in his career. So Perhaps we could settle for, “hey, knock it off Shaun”, and wait and see, rather than calling for his head.

I find it hypocritical that Bibles get burned and Christians are getting killed in other parts of the world (my friend is a missionary in Egypt, and it’s crazy some of the things that they have to do to stay safe) and no one blinks, but one nutcase who just wants publicity threatens to burn the Koran and everyone freaks out.

Hey Joel....

all this talk about nut-grabbing and nobody apparently caught the errors in the body. You claimed that Smith did it in Week 1 against Cleveland and Week 2 against San Fran. It should read Week 2 against Cleveland and Week 3 against San Fran.

Also, they mentioned this on the radio in San Diego this morning. It was quite funny that they said Shaun Smith has now grabbed two sacks, but that they don’t show up on the stat sheet.

Come on guys, have you never heard of offensive linemen being taught to 'nutblock'?

My father was a football coach for 30 years and at every oline clinic he went to they always preached nut blocking for OL, They didn’t actually grope anyone but they would always keep their hands lower than normal so if the DL tried get up and batt down a pass, hand might slip and knock him in the nuts, perfectly legal and most OL coaches at every level teach this to keep the DLs hands down

This is football

Nasty shit happens in pile-ups. Fingers and ankles twisted, eyes gauging, biting, clawing, and yes, the occasional nut grab and twist.. Anyone who says otherwise hasn’t played much football.

The back-and-forth between Smith and Davis happened all game, and I saw Davis blocking Smith after the whistle multiple times. Both players were going at it the entire game, and Davis’ genitals just happened to be at the wrong place (Smith’s fist) at the wrong time (when the officials weren’t watching).

by Nick Britt on Sep 28, 2010 1:37 PM CDT reply actions   2 recs

Looks like it might have happened

But it’s not at all clear to me that it was intentional. It’s a super slo-mo replay so the arm movement in real time would be pretty quick. It looks like he punched his package, but there’s nothing in this replay that makes it look intentional. I don’t think they can do much with this. I hope Haley talks to him about it, just to make sure he doesn’t get a rep, but I would be surprised if the league took any public action (maybe a word to the Chiefs in private to make sure Smith doesn’t intentionally go after privates).

Look at how beloved Albert Haynesworth is....

Just a few years after he stomped some poor dudes face in with his cleats! I was at the game and Smith was getting both the defense AND the crowd pumped up. Our D needs someone like this, i’m not advocating what he does but i’m sure it goes on a lot more than you guys think. Watching him the last few games he’s been playing pretty damn good and with an attitude.

It happens. If the officials see it, they will call it.

Yep.

There are guys in the hall of fame that have done a lot worse than this. Not supporting nut grabbing I guess but, I certainly love the intensity. I said last season they needed a “nasty” D player. I believe Smith is just that. However, I do fear the bullseye on our back from refs.

by Chiefs_40 on Sep 28, 2010 6:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Is it cheap? Yeah. Is it Dirty? Yeah. Is it effective? Yeah. Did anyone get hurt? No.
My good buddy played pro rugby in England, and in the first scrum of the game, his opposing guy slapped him across the face, and made my friend so mad he played the dumbest, worst game he’d ever played. Afterwards the all the players go out for beer, and the slapper hands him a pint and my friend, who is still fuming, says you made me so mad!
and the guy says, of course I did, that was the point.
Things may get nasty. Football is a bit of a nasty sport, but as long as nobody gets hurt, it’s all fair as far as I am concerned.
