Chiefs S Kendrick Lewis Fined $5,000 For Hit On Browns Tight End
Earlier this week I brought to light the possibility that Kansas City Chiefs safety Kendrick Lewis could face a fine for his "contact to the helmet of a defenseless receiver" penalty last Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.
Browns tight end Evan Moore received a concussion on the play and that's a big point of emphasis for the NFL.
The news is in...and the hit cost Lewis $5,000, a league spokesman confirmed Friday afternoon.
Chiefs defensive end Shaun Smith was accused of grabbing Browns center Alex Mack below the belt but confirmed to Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star that he was not fined for the alleged incident. Smith denied it happening.
Speaking of Mack, as they say it's always the second guy that gets caught. He was fined $5,000 for an unnecessary roughness call on Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson.

5K is huge for a 5th round rookie
While I do agree that the NFL needs to protect it’s players, realistically, if your in Lewis’ situation and you don’t want the TE to catch that there aren’t any options other than the high hit.
2010 predictions live by em die by em
- Chiefs do what they did last year and double their win total.. Good for a second place finish in the AFC West
-McCluster is considered for ROY, doesn't win it
- Arenas takes two to the house
- Carr becomes a legitimate corner
-Flowers gets jipped in Pro Bowl voting
Should fine players based on % of their income.
5000 is not the same to Lewis as it is to someone making 5 million.

I personally felt
watching the play…that the WR lowered HIS head AFTER lewis went for the hit…it was slight, but enough to make a helmet to helmet, and I think its too bad he loses 5k for this since he is a young guy that isnt making millions or anything

I hope he does it again
only harder, it was a crap penalty to begin with

Amen.
I don’t want to see anyone ever get hurt, but I like it. A safety with the chestnuts to smack someone once in a while for trespassing.
I’ll start the donation jar with a fresh $10 bill to pay his fine! Who’s with me?

agree, he went for the hit as he is supposed to...there are dirty hits, this was not one

My argument is
If he hits him low he probably blows his knees out and if he hits him in the body he might break his neck. I don’t know if the NFL is what the NFL is looking for, but it’s a double edge sword IMO.
Run D is the key this year.

He didn't lead with his head, he lead with his shoulder
watching the replay he tried for the clean hit, but the TE height difference helped cause the incidental helmet to helmet
The Chiefs will finish .500 or better in 2010.

yeah, and initially the WR's head was higher...would have been clean if the TE hadnt sort of lowered his own head after the catch

no but really.. thats rediculous! 5k for that? Anyone know how much Brandon Jacobs was fined for throwing his helmet at fans 10 rows up???
"It's still real to me dammit!"
That's OK
we are still waiting for the NFL to fine Gaither on the Trent Green hit…

the NFL is taking football out of football
thats what hes suppose to do, make the receivers remember the hits so next time they think about it when they cross the middle. That penalty was crap and so is this fine. What is he suppose to do wait for him to catch and start to run upfield before he tries to make the tackle.
We should start a fan fund
Pay off the fines of the low-round players so they can destroy receivers with no fear. Worth it.
Anthrax, ham radio, and liquor.
Even low-round player make a hell of a lot more money than I do...
But if you want to donate some of your money to them, go right ahead.
The hit was clean?
I looked at the rewind many times, and sure looked like a should pad hit and not a helmet to helmet.
Bottom line, I like the Nasty on the defense, and I would hope some of our veterans will pony up the fine money.
It was his pad.
His shoulder his the head. That’s what the fine is for. You can’t hit them in the head, period.

I thought it was helmet to helmet?
It is obvious as to the lack of intent to do harm etc. The receiver dropped his head and came into contact with the pad? Seems like a BS fine in this situation.
I'm sure Mr. Berry can help him out with a couple dollars

Mack got his nuts yanked off and then had to pay for it after...
Talk about adding insult to injury.

The problem with hits like Lewis made are the fault of the receiver imo. They instinctively duck when they see someone coming to hit them. When the defender is tackling properly their shouler is headed for the mid-section of the receiver with their head on the leading side. When the receiver makes their ducking motion it puts their head directly where the defender has been taught his entire career his helmet shoud be. Watch the games and 9 out of 10 hits you will see the receiver leaning forward laving only his helmet and legs exposed.
The Chiefs will find a way to compensate him for the loss.
Don’t know how…but I’d be willing to bet they will.

Speaking of Shaun Smith...today's feature on him revealed some of his
nicknames for guys on the team. Most of you know I’ve been an outspoken advocate of Mike Cox to be our primary FB, largely because of his blocking skills.
Most everyone on AP have been supportive of Castille for that slot.
I found it rather telling, that Smith’s nickname for Castille is “Wide Receiver”, because he
believes that Castille does not like to “block”.
Refreshing to know that at leas one Chiefs player, sees it the way I do.
IMO, it’s a big blunder for the Chiefs offense to be taking Cox’s blocking off of the field, especially when Charles or McCluster are on the field.

jeesh...at least one of the Chiefs players...I meant.

What I like best about that...
Is that it has to motivate Castille to be a better blocker. I assume he has pride, and doesn’t care for that nickname (though he is a very good receiver). Smith seems to be a different kind of leader, and I think the Chiefs are better for having him around, and not just on the field.
Smith is a punching, groping (?) leader!

Part of the reason Shaun Smith
did not get a fine is because Alex Mack paid him $20 for the grope………..;>}

Yes
But the fact that they fined Lewis as much as they fined Mack is in essence equating their actions, and that is bullshit. What Mack did was quite different from what Lewis did.
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
how is he defenseless?
He dropped the ball a second before the hit. But if he hung on to the ball it would of been a nice tackle.
by njchiefs on Sep 24, 2010 7:58 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
yeah I didnt see that as defenseless
they kept saying it, but its not like he didnt make the grab and pulled up THEN rodney harrison hits you(jerry rice in the endzone with oakland comes to mind)….lame penalty lame fine…and sucks for kendrick.

YEAH!!
I"ve always wondered what the hell happened with a fine or a flag or even a word on the Trent Green hit against Cincy. He was going into a feet first slide…helmet to helmet contact…season ending concussion to one of the leagues elite QB’s on a playoff bound team. Only KC fans understand that argument for some reason.
