I was going to wait a few more weeks for fear of looking foolish if he regresses. But I can't take it anymore. I can't handle reading about Charles and Jones over and over and over and over again.
I was just saying to H2E that don't even want to do posts right now because there's so many coming in that it's almost pointless. But I feel like someone has to do something. And I'm that someone. I'm only one man, but hopefully this one man can give you hope that there ARE other topics out there than JC/TJ, and the issue that I've sworn to not talk about until after week 6
So I want to talk about Glenn Dorsey. You know, that 4-3 guy who we should've traded this offseason. That guy who didn't have the right skill set to play anything better than average in a 3-4. That guy who proved how lazy he is by showing up to camp out of shape last year. That guy who represented everything wrong with our team trying to put "square pegs in round holes".
That guy? He's been the most important player on our defense these last two games.
Sure, Derrick Johnson is playing up to his potential, and that is an awesome development. Eric Berry has looked fantastic against the run. Ron Edwards is playing better splitting time with Shaun Smith. Tyson Jackson looked decent out there in Week 1. Belcher is so much better than Mays that I throw up in my mouth a little when I remember that Mays started for us last year.
I submit that NONE of that (with the possible exception of Jackson in Week 1) would be possible without Dorsey playing the way he has. He's been playing with ferocity, pushing the line back, moving guys where he wants them, funneling runners to the LB's and S's, and basically doing everything a 3-4 DE has to do for a 3-4 to succeed.
I came into this season thinking that the absolute MOST important issue that would determine our year was Dorsey. Would he continue to get better? Or would be always be a "substandard" DE that many here and elsewhere thought he was last year.
Well, it's only two games into the season, but I'll throw this out there; Glenn Dorsey has looked like a Pro Bowl DE. He's been the most important player on a top 10 defense that is STUFFING the run.
With so much complaining going on around here (and perhaps deservedly so) about our offense, I thought I'd just toss out a little something to cheer about.
So kudos to you, Glenn Dorsey, for proving all the doubters wrong in a big way these last two weeks. Keep it up, friend, because our fortunes as a defense rise and fall with you playing at the level you've been playing at.
Poll
How would you rate Dorsey's play so far?
He's been OK, I guess. Maybe a little better than last year (15 votes)
I still think he would be better in a 4-3. He'll never be even average in our defense (2 votes)
Rock solid, but not our biggest contributer (243 votes)
Our defensive MVP. He looks like a Pro Bowler so far (186 votes)
