SB Nation Kansas City Editor's Pick
Hope I don't jinx you guys, but the Chiefs are developing quite the bandwagon
Before the start of this season, I spent approximately 5 seconds analyzing the Chiefs. I watched you play once last year, against my beloved Redskins, and it was one of the worst football games I have ever seen. (You guys got your first win of the season). My AFC West focus this year was on the Raiders, and whether they could challenge the Chargers.
But then the Monday night game happened. Arrowhead. The Fans. Haley. I loved it all.
Watching the defense play, I had so many questions. Who is this guy Gilberry that is involved in so many plays? What about Belcher? Or this Carr guy? So I start looking at the depth chart, and I was just blown away by how many players that I liked in college were on the Chiefs. I guess I knew it, but it just never fully registered with me. Glenn Dorsey, Tyson Jackson, Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson, Eric Berry and Javier Arenas. Plus, I love VT football, so I am very familiar with Brandon Flowers. Then I looked at the ages of Belcher, Carr and Gilberry; 23, 24 and 25, respectively. That makes ten young, aggresive, legit playmakers on the defensive side of the ball.
Anyway, sorry for not making much of a point. But I just thought you should know that the football world is taking notice of the Chiefs. People have been gushing over your defense. The offense needs work obviously, but the running backs are there, so no need to waste any picks/money on them. Keep developing your game plan around your defense. Run the ball, win the field position battle.
Good luck. You guys have been the highlight of the young season.

How fast can we get this on the rec list?

Doing my part
Rec’d the OP.
And JPW – don’t feel bad. We’re used to people taking no more than a cursory look at the Chiefs making assessments. It’s been the rule and not the exception the last few years.
People may very well want to start looking soon!
(Though we do covet our role as underdogs and being taken for granted!)
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
When I saw this in the Recommended Fanposts menu....the first thing I thought was...
There’s something fishy going on…..18 recs and only 9 comments? I assumed that someone posted this at their workplace, then went around to 18 different computers, logging on and wrecking, and then leaving without a comment, just to make sure it got into recommended.
Kinda funny.
Then I saw Joel’s comment, requesting rec’s for it, and now it makes sense.
I really dug the spirit of the post….and so…here ya go.
“Boink”..Rec’d.

This thing is going to set some kind of record....
for Rec’s vs. Comments ratio.
Right now it’s more than two Rec’s for each comment….and I’m sure that’s never been done, before.

Joel, my rec just made it 63 ... what's the record?
John Park Williams, thank you … coming from a Redskins fan your words mean a lot to us here at AP … yah, we do have a young team, esp on Defense

Rec'd - thanks for noticing
Loved Peter King’s breaking news that we are one of two of the lowest salary teams to be 2-0 – these young guys are definitlely helping that cause
hmmm....
That makes ten young, aggresive, legit playmakers on the defensive side of the ball.
so… the Chiefs should draft a NT next year?
this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?
yes, probably
although it did look like Toribio was on the field fairly often. I’m looking forward to this week’s DL analysis about him.

All aboard!
It does feel weird. I’m used to having soooo much room on the bandwagon. On well. All aboard!!
You Play to Win the game!!!
Dear Mr. Williams
Thanks for the kind words, but you are wrong. Our good young defense and 2-0 record mean nothing. Our QB sucks more then any QB in the history of football. Therefore it is wrong to even remotely be excited about anything Chiefs related. Please stay away from the Chiefs Kool Aid, it’s been poisoned by Matt Casshole.

Funny how porkchop can sarcastically criticise the QB

Oh Christ Porkchop.
I know you are being a smart ass, but I’m getting sick and tired of people being called “party pooper” or “hater” or “negative nancy/nelly/norman/cottonheadedninnymuffins” everytime they (god forid) say anything disparaging about this team.
Call me what ever you want, I’m fine with it, I’m a big boy but this team and its fanbase is too easily satisfied with mediocracy because of the 10 wins in 3 season. The QB play and playcalling IS going to hold this team back and I know you like dishing out the Kool Aide, but all he Koolaid in the world doesn’t compensate the fact that Cassel is the 29th ranked QB in the NFL and if anything has regressed from last year.
The counterargument is “Ya but, we’re 2-0 and the only thing that matters is the record”. True, you ARE what your record is and I’m excited as shit about this team but ignoring the white elephant in the room is the equivalent of closing your eyes, plugging your ears and screaming “LA LA LA LA LA” everytime someone brings up the QB play.
I’m just as big of a fan as you even though I am critical of things that are not going well. Being a fan and being critical of the QB are not mutually exclusive so quit trying to “hate the haters”

Nice Basil Wolverton pic
That brings back memories…
If JC and MC can shore up the O for KC, the OC and HC can stop being PC... and just win the AFC!
First off, I can honestly say I have never called anyone a cottonheadedninnymuffin.
For the record I’m not ignoring Cassel’s play. It hasn’t been good enough. So fine, if you want to sit around and bemoan the fact that we aren’t a big time Super Bowl contender yet because of the passing game then fine, lose sleep over it, be pissed off about it, whatever. My point is our ENTIRE TEAM was total garbage a little over a year ago. Now we are an average passing game away from being a legit challenge to the Chargers for the AFC West. We’ve come a long ways, but NOBODY should have expected that every aspect of the game would be at a playoff team level after a year and 2 games of this new regime. I’m happy with the progress we’ve made and think that it’s realistic not Kool Aid guzzling homerism to expect that some things are going to take longer to fix then others. We both see the team as needing to be improved I’m just happy about the improvements that have been made instead of grumbling about what they haven’t fixed yet.

exactly
some people, maybe many, on here (and craig may or may not be one of them) seem to have expected that Pioli would be hired on Day 1 and by Day 2 EVERY one of our problems should have been solved and a SB in year one.
Umm, let’s get some rational realism going around here.

Maybe..
But the fact that Pioli did trade away a 2nd round pick for Cassel is kind of damning (if he continues to play like he has). Pioli’s supossed to fix it, not make it worse.

But Cassel
is doing a lot better than the other QB we would have been stuck with, the guy that gets injured when he steps on the field.

but
look at his first draft class he is fixing it. vrable was part of that trade two…..did you think we were getting a franchise QB and a serivicable (albeit aging) linebacker for a second rounder??? no we received a mediocre QB and said linbacker

That statement is as far from the truth as possible. There are a lot of people who believe that Cassel is not the answer. That doesn’t mean they don’t, at the same time, acknowledge that the team has improved.

Having criticisms about the team doesn't make someone negative.
Our defense and special teams have really stepped up, but we’re not going anywhere near the playoffs if we can’t get some more consistent play out of our offense. Cassel was a liability in the first half at Cleveland, but turned it around and helped us move the ball in the second. It wasn’t a stellar performance by any stretch, and if he doesn’t get better through the season, a QB draft pick for us to develop may very well be on the table.
See that? Nowhere did I call anyone (commentor, player or coach) a name. Or spew any haterade. Criticisms can be made without looking like a 13 year old xbox addict who’s throwing a fit because someone just owned him at Call of Duty.
Some people should realize that they’re just being straight up negative in most things that they post here. Criticism or being unhappy about the way a player is playing or a coach is coaching doesn’t have to equate to name calling, mud slinging and other typically juvenile behavior. Plus, blowing a gasket and stressing out about a bad pass or a bad play call really doesn’t accomplish anything other than raising your blood pressure and maybe developing a persistent eye twitch.
Blatant persistent negativism is not a very admirable personality trait. And there are some here on AP who display that on a daily basis.
((note: I’m not saying any of this describes you specifically, just a general observation about the “hater” gang that shows up here))

The Chiefs are totally starved for attention
AP is starved for anyone to see the Chiefs as we do. As the Recs say :)
We are not a finished product. But, Soon we will take those not paying attention by Storm
He will lead us from the Wilderness and then fade away when we are in the Promised Land.
Mister Williams
Thanks for the kind words. We’re excited to see progress.
As you can see, though, opinions are very divided on just how much progress has been made. The comments you see here are representative of the last two weeks of AP. There’s a lot of division for a team that’s come so far in just over a year…
Anyways, thanks again!
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Well we thank the Redskins for giving Oakland Jason Campbell
He’s proved to be quite effective for us

I think he’s a free agent coming out of this season.
I’d happily have Gradkowski on the roster.
