This AM was having some thoughts that I decided to post. It concerns one of the most often discussed position battles at center and a possible scenario which Brandon Albert stars. These are just musings and conjecture and I'll let you fellow Chief Fanatics judge my sanity which is not fueled by Kool-Aid or coffee. It's a sad morning>
Firstly let's discuss the center position which is a hot topic in many of the posts conversations that have been going on. Who will start and why? Currently the incumbent is Rudy, and he is listed as #1 on the depth chart. Casey was brought in to compete right? Was he brought in to start as most believe or is there another reason? Way to early for this many questions? Let me explain what came into my mind.
Some will remember Rudy was manhandled late last season, and it was ugly. Where's the beef, it certainly ain't Casey who is no heavyweight himself. This brings me to that conjecture point. Rudy played hard and OK last year until he wore down and dropped a considerable amount of weight over the course of the season, and this weight loss is the reason he was manhandled. Enter Casey, an experienced pro who is ancient by NFL standards and was released by the donkeys because he too wasn't deemed stout enough. Now comes my idea that perhaps Pioli and Haley have decided to platoon these guys, so as they aren't worn down and will be fresh and strong all season long. It makes sense in this team oriented management style that is being espoused by the team. In this format who starts is less important than having effective play all game, all season long. I remember years ago some teams regularly substituted guards. Yes I know they were running plays in from the sidelines as it was before helmet mikes, but it would make sense for our ballclub. Imagine Rudy not dropping the weight from a gruelling season in the trenches as he being spelled by a savvy old pro in Weigman? Is this a possibility?
Now about Albert. He was drafted to fill the LT spot, which is not only a difficult place to play but essential in today's sack happy league. Protecting the right handed QB's back is an oppurtunity to become rich as it is one of the top four paid positions in pro football. Albert has shown ability but not consistency. Much discussion took place for him to move to RT or back to guard which is what he played in college. When we didn't draft a tackle early this year it opened the door for much speculation. So here is my theory. This is Brandon's chance to shine and garner the big contract or be moved into the RT position. I believe that both Haley and Pioli were not able to determine what Albert's future is going to be after the transitions that took place last year. So this is make or break for Albert and a reason as to why the brain trust hasn't got active in getting better talent in at RT.
Another thought that has been percolating for awhile is why Asamoah is being played at the left guard spot. Haley has said that Waters could play any position on the o-line. If Asamoah proved to be competent, could we see Waters moved to RT so our QB would have time to throw the football. I know this blasphemy, just like moving Brian to center. The center spot could be fixed, but we really need someone to pass block on the right side. I know it is an off the wall thought, but like I said earlier my sanity is in question. Why does Cassel even need time to make decisions to throw the ball?
Well there you have it, some uninspired musings from an unfueled early AM fan of the KC CHIEFS!!!!!!
