Except for Darren McFadden, this offense was terrible all game. McFadden had one of the best games of his career, and they still managed just 13 points. All this off season, all I have been hearing about the Raiders is now that they got Jamarcus out and Jason Cambell in, this team is going to get rolling on offense. The offense was very flat and the Raiders number 1 pick, DHB, had a measly 1 catch for 11 yards. But the worst part of the offense was the O-line. Cambell was running for his life all game and there were no running holes for McFadden, which goes to show how well McFadden really played. They also fumbled the ball 3 times and Jason Cambell threw an INT.
Well seeing that Vince Young might have had the highest QB rating of his career at 142.8 and Chris Johnson was running all over them, I think I could be too generous with a C-. Vince young was doing whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted completing 13/17 passes and had two touchdowns. Chris Johnson ran for 142 yards and had 2 touchdowns. The defense gave up 38 points.
Special Teams: B
Jans did miss a field goal, but Shane Lechler averaged 54 yards a punt and even kicked a 68 yard punt.
I will start off by saying Kyle Orton looks like the real deal, but I am still not sold on the cast that is around him. Brandon Lloyd and Eddie Royal played well, but they aren't number 1 guys and am not sure they can keep producing. Knowshon Moreno is an average back at best, and still needs a lot of work. Buckhalter had a key fumble while the Broncos were driving that killed momentum. The Broncos did acquire Laurence Moroney this week, but I'm not high on him. The O-line was maybe the biggest weakness. Aaron Kampman lived in the backfield and there were not many holes for the running backs to run threw.
David Garrard had a 138.9 QB rating for the game and also threw three touchdowns. MJD rushed for 98 yards, but they didn't let him get in the end zone. I think the biggest problem was exactly what I knew it would be, which was they could not get pressure on Garrard. Garrard was sacked one time, but other than that, he looked way too calm and was picking apart the secondary. Champ Bailey is obviously still an elite CB, shutting down Mike Sims-Walker, but the Jags TE's tore the Broncos defense apart.
Special Teams: C
Matt Prater hit a 54 yard field goal and little Colquitt looks like a good punter. The story on special teams was the way they covered kick offs(or tried to at least). 3RD STRING returner Underwood killed them averaging over 38 yards a return(can't wait til we play them!).
Now I know what kind of numbers the Chargers O put up, Rivers passing for 298 yards and 2 touchdown passes and Mathews and Tolbert rushing for over 100 yards and Naanee get 110 yards receiving with a touchdown, but the point of offense is to score points, and they only got 14! Gates still looks like the best tight end in the game and Philip Rivers is an elite top 5 QB. The receivers are still question marks, though. They dropped too many passes, even in the conditions. The biggest thing against the offense was being stopped 4 times inside the 6.
Jamaal Charles had the big 56 yard run against them which really hurt, but other than that, they really held their own. They only sacked Matt 1 time and did not get any turnovers, but they shut the Chiefs down in the second half. They held the Chiefs to 1-11 on 3rd down and Matt only threw for 68 yards.
Special Teams: F
Gave up multiple big returns, and one for a touchdown(and it should have been 2). The coverage was terrible all night for them. And Sproles did absolutely nothing on kick off or punt returns.
The Chiefs started off terrible and ended terrible on offense. Way too many 3 and outs and was 1-11 on 3rd down. The only reason they managed a C- grade was they did get 2 offensive touchdowns, even though one was a very short field. The offense could not get anything going in the 2nd half. I get it that we had a 14 point lead and didn't want to screw anything up with a int, but it almost cost us. Jamaal Charles was the best player on offense rushing for 92 yards. Matt needs a lot of work, only throwing for 68 yards. What also stood out to me was how little faith the coaching staff has in him.
I think I might be too generous on this grade, but I was so pleased how the defense played. I get how many yards they allowed, but again they only gave up 14 points, which is huge. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the least amount of points the Chargers offense puts up this season. EB had a couple of huge mental breakdowns, but I don't think that will keep happening. Brandon Flowers looks like one of the best tackling CB's in the league. I was also so pleased with how Brandon Carr played, finally got his head around on some throws. The LSU boys up front looked very good, especially Glenn. But the biggest win for the defense was the play of Derrick Johnson. He was everywhere and was our surest tackler. Great game for DJ.
Special Teams: A++++
McCluster and Arenas just gashing the Chargers... A special teams touchdown.... Swarming Darren Sproles on kick-off and punt returns...an A++++ grade is very just(would be 5+'s if it wasn't for Colquitt's 7 yard punt :) ),
