An Apology to Scott Pioli and Others
I was one of the more vocal on here during the draft about my disappointment with the 2nd round selections this year. Living in St. Louis I don't get to see much about training camp or preseason, so I've only been able to watch the 3rd preseason matchup against the Eagles and the monday night victory over the Bolts. Still, that has been enough for me to believe that McCluster and Arenas look like the type of invaluable talents of which this team is so desperately in need. As such, even though my complaints were not about the talent of either of these players but their durability, I still owe an apology to the management staff and so many of you who believed the talent of these two players to be worth the risk.
Arenas impressed in his special teams play, but more importantly in his coverage ability. I didn't expect a 1st year player to be able to make that kind of impact against the passing game, especially as a nickel corner. I was concerned about how much of an impact he could make due to his size. I think he answered that question for me. I personally thought he had a bigger impact on the game than Berry.
I don't know if there is anything that needs to be said about McCluster other than Get Him the Damn Ball More! In the special teams game he showed his value immediately. His speed and athleticism are evident in the offense, as well. He probably needs to improve his route running for the pro game, but what rookie doesn't? I also hope Coach Weis shows a little more aggressiveness in the next game in the offensive game plan. I think that will give McCluster more opportunities.
Just some quick other thoughts. I have a hard time getting too excited about this victory because of the horrific display of offense the Chiefs gave us. I didn't think the offensive line gave Cassel very much protection, and he isn't the type of QB that is going to be successful without a secure pocket. I also think several of the hits that Cassel took were his own fault due to lack of that "pocket clock" that is required to play QB in the NFL. I wasn't impressed with Cassel's accuracy, but there were also a lot of catches that need to be made by pro WRs. The running game is very good, but they aren't going to have much success there without some semblance of a passing attack. As I stated above, we have to see a more aggressive offensive game plan than the turtle game that Weis gave us at the end if we want to win consistently. This running attack is good, but if you only call passing plays on 2nd or 3rd and long, any defense can shut you down.
I was impressed by the improvements of Glenn Dorsey, Derrick Johnson, Tyson Jackson (before he got hurt), and the defense as a whole. I was a little perplexed by the defensive game plan on San Diego's last two drives even though it worked out for them. I think they were extremely lucky that Naanee let that 4th down pass go through his hands and that the receiver fell down in the end zone on his cut on the final play. Otherwise, we are talking about a loss instead of a win.
Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy with the win, especially for a 1st game. This team actually tackled, which is something I haven't seen them do in years! There athleticism on defense is starting to translate to playmakers on the field, which is something we've been waiting for for too long. I just want to know where the WRs went in this first week, and I still don't have faith in Matt Cassel as a true franchise QB.
Thanks for the time.

Get excited about the potential for progress. The last few years, we were bad, with little hope. This year, we have a few players that are generating real excitement amongst fans, and NFL analysts.
You’ll start to see DCM, Arenas, Charles, and Berry jerseys around. Next year, we’ll fill in more pieces (LB, OL, and maybe DLine).

Rec what kc571 was pitching: you can onlly fix so much in one yr, and we’ve been stinky for quite a while. let’s underscore the progress, and wait for Pioli to fix what’s incomplete (and he WILL….) hehheh.. as to the durability, Kris Jenkins goes 360lbs and a plate of biscuits and he went down for the yr (longer?? who knows) during a single snap. That’s football, short/tall/compact/ or huge, an injury can hit anyone , anytime.
It takes a lot to admit the possibility of being wrong
Good for you brother.
I shared your doubts, and both Arenas and McCluster are making me feel foolish for doing so.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
I expect him to go after
OL, NT, WR, possibly QB, and I guess LB athough we got a lil talent and potential there. Not in this order though
you dont owe anyone an apology if you spoke from your heart
As long as you believe what you had to say, no one can take that from you. Its what makes us all different and likable in most instances. What would the world be if everyone agreed on any subject? What I dont like is people who say something publicly and then want to retract their statements because it upset someone. BS! Say what you want to say, but be honest and stand by your statement.
Theres nothing wrong with disagreement and it only makes each of us smarter and willing to bring better research and understanding to the table in any given argument. :)
Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!
I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.
I made a promise, though.
I did promise on here to admit that if my feelings about these two players were wrong that I would admit. So, this was kind of my admission to being wrong. Apology may not be the right word, maybe I just meant owning up to a less-than-informed opinion/fear. Thanks for the kind words.
No worries. But I agree about the offense. That is a serious problem right there.
We can’t expect to compete if we’re going to go back to the Herm Edwards days of play calling for God sakes. Hand it to Jones every first down the entire game, THEN bring in Jamaal….and they can’t figure out why the Chargers knew what we were doing every down?
How predictable was that crap? I think Weis is mad at Charles for some unGodly reason. He can score at will every time he touches the ball. There was NO excuse for not letting him run the ball on first down if thats how their going to call the offense going forward. Jones should be the second man in to get the 2 and 3 and 3rd and 1 AFTER Charles has gained us 7, 8 or 9 yards on first and second, if he hasn’t run one in for a TD already.
I didn’t like the playcalling one bit at all. It could have and almost did cost us the game. That has got to change.
Good post and don’t stress it. A lot of folks felt like you did. I was only excited because I knew it finally meant we had some speed on offense. We were horrible in that department last year.
And yes, I too was absolutely shocked at how well Arenas played the pass. That far exceeded my expectations as well. Berry has a little learning to do for sure. He was directly responsible for 14 points scored against us Monday. He blew two big plays for us that let San Diego score.
But Crennel will get that ironed out. This isn’t preseason. It’s a hell of a lot faster out there now. SO I would expect Berry to go through some growing pains. But he’s the real deal. Just wait until next season when Fitzgerald is a Chief and Cowher is our coach.
I wish I could say I picked up on this.
Thanks for pointing out the discrepancy on when the RB numbers were getting called. I really like Jones, but Charles is definitely this team’s bread and butter. I would also like to see McCluster more involved in passing and running the ball.
That’s a great point about Berry. I knew he was certainly at fault on the Gates TD, but I don’t think I caught that he made a mistake on the other one. I just think it’s funny that I totally bought in on Berry during the draft and ragged on the Arenas pick. Meanwhile, Arenas is clearly making an immediate impact in two facets of the game and Berry is still trying to learn what to do. I hope Berry still has the higher ceiling, but I sure expected the impacts of these two players to be reversed early in the season.
I guess that shows what I know, huh?
Do you really think Haley won’t pan out? I’m curious to see how the coaching dynamic matures over the season. I certainly felt as if both coordinators were playing not to lose in the second half. I think that is a way to get beat most of the time, so I hope that doesn’t continue. I’m curious if that was Haley’s personality coming out in the team, if that was because of the caliber of the opponent, or if that was just first game jitters from a newly assembled coaching staff. It should be fun to see how the season plays out. I still stand by my 6 win prediction, so I don’t think we’re going to skyrocket to the top this year.
Hey Kray. Howz the back?
I agree on the O Playcalling. Way too conservative. Even Haley said it was. But, conditions absolutely sucked, so I’m hoping they open it up quite a bit with better weather. They were definitely playing NOT to lose. As etp_stl said below, in quite a few situations that results in a loss. Our D’s goal line stand won that game for us. Man, that feels good to say that…it’s been awhile!
In Berry’s case, he had a great schooling session Monday night. Every team we face this year will continue that tutoring until our star pupil knows his subject matter inside and out. Agreed on Arenas. Awesome 1st game. Personally, I wish they’d put both of ’em back in kickoffs and punts. Make them pick who they want to kick away from.
You really think Cowher is coming here? I didn’t figure Haley would be going anywhere for a few years. I’m all for Fitzy coming if he’ll fit into our scheme. We definitely need help at WR. Bowe’s just too inconsistent. This is his year to shine or he’s gone IMHO…
