looks good to me

I think maybe the Chiefs management is on to something… the roster looked pretty good last night, contributions from a lot of different players

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

Sterling Sharpe just picked the Chiefs as one of his 5 "new" teams to make the playoffs!

At least we’re gettin SOME love.

Aside from figuring out

How to avoid a hundred 3 and outs….

I’d really like to see our offense move the ball next week. I don’t know if they need to be more creative with their run plays or what, but we need to do better than what we did on offense.

I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

well yeah ...

I imagine Weis will roll out more plays and be a bit more creative in some decent weather …

Give the ball to Charles on first down runs.

Then, when it’s second or third and short, give the ball to Jones. They were bass-akwards on that all night, and Charles still almost managed to convert a couple of third and long draws.

Love the comment from Haley about who's a starter...

He said that he considers anyone who makes our 45 game day roster as starters. Because they all play an important role and the Chiefs will need contributions from all of them to win.

Charles is da man

I don’t care who “starts,” but was anybody else yelling at Haley to get Charles into the games earlier and more often than Jones? Wouldn’t you say Charles had the “hot hand?”

by sunny D on Sep 14, 2010 4:26 PM CDT reply actions

No, I was yelling at Weis : )

In hindsight though I think Weis was accounting for the weather in his play calling and just kept running it straight ahead with Jones. He probably got a little over conservative in the second half. But it’s all good it worked out and we have a very important W in that column. One that may come back and bite the dolts right in the hind quarters.

Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...

by oldchiefsfan on Sep 14, 2010 4:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Wies ratcheted the offense down in the second half and for good reason....

With our defense playing well and our dangerous ST it was a good idea to keep Cassel from possibly throwing a huge int. Not saying he would but given the lead we had it was prolly the smart thing to do.

So you got the fax. So why didn't you add it to the resume? What do you mean? Of course martial arts training is relevant.

The flairs to Dex

Make me oddly nervous and comfortable at the same time. I love the play. Just hope we don’t go to that well one too many times this year.

I thought, aside from the obvious touchdown run, that McCluster was struggling with the wet field a bit....

He seemed to slip when he was going for his cuts. On a dry field I bet at least one of those flairs goes for big yards.

McCluster

He needs to work on his route running and getting off the line. He trys to stutter step to much instead of running his route. The DB’s aren’t even pressing him and he is trying to juke them. Run your route catch the ball then put the moves on. Just look at the tape and you will see it.

Charles looked much better than Jones. I was at the game. And from wat i saw, he did nothing better than Charles. I have no idea why he’s still in front of Charles on the deph chart. This is Charles’ third damn year. Feed him the ball…. And like you said. He has the “hot hand”. So i want to see Haley be a man of his word and give it to the “hot hand”!!!!!!

be a below average 70 year old veteran. it just seem like that Haley works that way. and its fucked up because if Jones continues to get the same amount of carries as Charles, we wont be thinkin playoffs.

Charles needs to be the starter

and bring in TJ for 3rd and short (assuming JC ever doesn’t get all ten in the first 2 downs). That is the best way to use the personnel.

by BrillDaddy on Sep 14, 2010 4:32 PM CDT reply actions

Thats exactly what I want.

JC gets like 7-8 yards. Jones gets that tough 2-3 extra yards. That’s how I personally think it should be

When you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.

Jamaal above all. #25 ftw.

by NJChieffan16 on Sep 14, 2010 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

i concur

If the disparity between Jones and Charles continues to grow (I believe Charles more than doubled Jones’ yards on the same number of carries) then can the coaching staff really NOT start giving the ball to Charles more.

Judging by last night’s victory, this team is going to need some big plays to win games this season. They got them last night. My point is, Charles gives you a big play threat. Jones does not. Therefore, Charles needs to get more than 11 touches. Hope the logic isn’t too sophisticated.

by kcwolff on Sep 14, 2010 5:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Charles should always have at least 20 carries

He’s a 100+ runner and he deserves to get the ball.. Everytime he gets to the outside he’s gone..

by Kcbiggyblue on Sep 14, 2010 4:32 PM CDT reply actions

Starter, schmarter.

If JC continues running like he did the 2nd half of last year, he’s going to get paid AND enough carries to make sick ass big plays and score tons of points. And TJ will be there to spell him and grind out that 3.8 p/c and a touchdown here and there. So who the hell cares who is called the starter at that point? Welcome to some real stability at running back in KC…2.7 = good riddance.

Jamaal Charles will be the first 2,500-yard rusher in the league. Bank.

Points

Just as long as Charles gets the ball enough for us to get more points than the other team.

by sunny D on Sep 14, 2010 4:43 PM CDT up reply actions

yep. and last night, Cassel got the ball 2 xs as much as Charles, or...

the same as Charles and Jones combined. In my opinion, that isn’t a good thing. especially in the rain. 22 carries between the two, and cassel had 22 passing attempts. we can’t win with that. not unless/until cassel improves immensely.

not sure I agree with your point
  • I agree KC needs to be a running team first
  • I agree that Charles is the best player on Offense at this point
  • But, 22 pass attempts is NOT too many, in fact, they SHOULD have thrown the ball a lot more, IMO
  • somewhere around 30 pass attempts for Cassel, averaging 8 per attempt would be 240 yards a game, 3,840 yards on the season… that’s about where he needs to be
  • somewhere around 15 carries per game, 6 ypc average gets Charles 1440 yds on the season on 240 carries… right about where he needs to be
  • that would leave Jones with 10 carries per game, averaging 4ypc, 640 yds this year on 160 carries
  • not to mention Dex, who should get 10 carries a game
  • that accounts for 65 offensive plays per game… for comparison, KC only ran 49 plays last night, SD had 70

Dex 10 carries?

I agree that they need to pass more. One third down conversion is not goin to cut it, you can’t count on the special teams winning the game for the Chiefs. Don’t take carries away from Jones & Charles. Keep Dex in the pass and return game.

by stagdsp on Sep 14, 2010 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

cassel's 22 attempts is way too many when his completion percentage was 45%

and it was raining out. you can use that to excuse some of it, but i’m using it for the specific purpose of talking about the game. it was raining. better to run, especially with cassel as qb.

it is probably a difference of philosophy, but I believe more in passing on second and short and third and long. yeah, when we’ve established the run, go with play action. I even said KC should throw some deep balls in this game, and they tried. But throwing on first down with an inaccurate qb makes converting 3rd downs much more harder. after all, when you can’t complete a pass on a conventional running down, how do you expect to complete a third and long when the defense is basically assured of a pass?

i'm saying considering the game 22 pass attempts was too many

especially with the rain.

and even more so when cassel was at 45%

I agree that Cassel should be around 30 pass attempts a game. Last year he was around 31/gm.

I’m just saying not in this game. not so much the number, but the % in this game. And furthermore, that % should change weekly depending on the opponent, you know, game planning.

And having the rain fall is part of that.

I see Charles at 15-20 carries
and Jones at 10-15.

30 pass attempts, and 30 carries between them. 10 Carries for McCluster would be nice, but maybe unrealistic. Don’t want to wear him down too much.

In the end, we basically agree to a tee. Except for Cassel having those 22 pass attempts last night. It killed our offense.

I think he was talking more about the percentage.

Should’ve been slanted more toward the run last night. Good running teams generally fare better on bad footing than the defense, especially if they have runners with good power (Jones) and balance (Charles).

Haley wants his RB’s to be complete football players. It is likely that JC is playing 2nd fiddle because his blocking or some aspect of his game still isn’t what it needs to be.

Ball control...

Hasn’t Charles had issues with fumbling before? I think if he can show an improvement over last season in this area he’ll start getting more and more carries. Though hopefully we don’t wear him down too early.

by talastan on Sep 14, 2010 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions

To your point on fumbling

Maybe Charles get nervous for the start of a game and the coaches wait until the game has started to flow before getting in there. It just puzzles me why Charles isn’t a bigger part of the first or second series.

by sunny D on Sep 14, 2010 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm still on cloud nine....yet concerned...

about our passing game.

We can’t count on the Defense to account for 14 points each and every game.

At some point the O-line has to learn how to open up the passing game by giving Matt time to throw the ball down the field and hit an open reciever, and thereby keeping our running game sharp.

I’m hoping in clear weather, the passing game will begin to realize their full potential against the Browns.

If there’s ever a time to improve our passing game, it’s this week against the Browns.

Just another quick note….I’m beginning to come around in regard to Belcher, he played a pretty strong game.

But there should be no questions remaining about DJ’s starting status. How many tackles? I lost count at 12 and the forced fumble, which created the opportunity for the lone Cassel TD pass to Meaoki and the 7 point difference in the game.

DJ is proving where he belongs….like it or not.

Funny how the same reality can lead to two totally different perceptions....

I saw one quarterback who couldn’t or wasn’t allowed to throw the ball much because his coaches didn’t trust him…

And one QB who could pretty much get the ball down the field with complete accuracy at will.

And here’s the tag lines….the numbers don’t lie. There isn’t a QB in the league who wouldn’t be happy if he could trade an unknown future to have a guaranteed stat line like this for the rest of his career in the NFL.

Rivers: 22 of 39 for 289 yards and 2 TD’s and a QB rating of 98.0

pursuant to that, there isn’t a QB in the league who would want to trade an unknown future to have this one guaranteed for the rest of his career…which would be about 2 more games.

Cassel: 10 of 22 for 68 yards and 1 TD for a QB rating of 68.0

At some point, we will have to start asking some hard questons. But most QB’s would tell you that if you wind up with that stat line of Rivers in the NFL…you had a fine passing day.

Only reason he didn’t get the game tied on the last play, was the Malcolm Floyd slip.

Let’s be honest about this. It’s a great win for the Chiefs, because we manhandled them in two other phases of the football game. For that I’m both proud, encouraged and extremely hopeful and excited.

But let’s face the facts….both teams QB’s and Receivers played on the same field, in the same conditions, and in the same rain.

Which should be a clue to any prudent person, that we have work to do in the passing game, if we’re going to keep any respect we’ve earned back in week 1.

To be fair, even though Rivers had a better night than Cassel, he did miss some open receivers.

So he didn’t have “complete” accuracy. I personally think the difference between the two QBs came down more to picking the right receiver to throw to. Which isn’t good for us, but at least that can be improved with some coaching.

But each team had a different number on the scoreboard

That was another difference that made the gap between Rivers and Cassel bigger even. The Chargers were playing to catch up, which means passing more. The Chiefs were playing conservative because they were ahead. Add the rain onto that, and it skews the perception. I’m not saying Cassel isn’t worse, but don’t take this game as the gospel.

Jones Vs. Charles

Charles should be starting. I know they are saying he will get his carries but what I want him in to start the 1st two series of the game. We have started slow in every game including pre-season and Jones is only averaging 2.5 YPC on the first two series of the games. We don’t want 3 and outs to begin every game and Charles is our best chance to move the ball early. Charles Davis on NFLN gave DJ some love today saying he played at a Pro Bowl level.

I’m saving my opinion until I see it 2-3 weeks in a row.

If he doesn't...you know Haley will feed off DW's anger and throw him in the game.

Me too....all in all, it was a pretty good team effort....

unfortunately, our 60 million dollar QB contributed the least of everyone. But at least to his credit, he gave most of the credit to the D and ST’s after the game.

Copper had a fine game on ST also.

Falcon clued me in to Copper on ST’s or I might not have noticed that much.

He’s definitely on the team because of ST play.

Well, when your passes are completely uncatchable by either team because

Don’t forget, we gave him a “lot” of carries last year and he ended up needing surgery on his shoulder. Granted Charles is tough as nails, but limiting his touches a little bit is the best way to make sure he can contribute at this high level over 16 games. Imagine how good we’ll be next year when all of our rookies aren’t anymore.

Haley and Weis should turn on the sprinklers and make our WRs run through them all week.

There’s no reason a WR who know where he’s going should not be able to get open against DBs who have to react to him on bad footing. Seen it tons of times.

There's been a lot of talk about Charles vs. Jones here

And look, I think Charles is the most electric RB in the game. Quite frankly, I think he’s better than CJ. Both of them are breakaway runners when they get to the second level, but Charles does it not just with his speed like CJ, but with amazing vision and cuts. Could Weddle have made the tackle if that was CJ in the open field? I think he miught have. CJ would try to outrun him to the sideline, and might be able to. JC on the other hand did that sweet little run in and back out to turn Weddle’s hips around. That is pure instinct and intellect there.

That said, we didn’t see a lot of JC last night. But I’m gonna go ahead and speculate that that is because of the conditions. Charles has had his issues with ball security before, we don’t like to admit it, but its true, even through the preseason. We had a lead against a good team and we didn’t wanna risk it by giving it to Charles. Trust me, the coaching staff HAS to know that when we need a big play, Jamaal is our man (which is exactly why he was in on that third series). But when we need to protect the ball in inclement weather, Jones is as sure-handed as they come. They’re gonna play it safe (maybe to our detriment at times) in order to make sure we don’t blow the lead on giveaway.

...And as the roar of 80,000 red-clad great plains warriors fills the hallowed halls of Arrowhead, it will strike fear into the hearts of lesser men. For on that field, individual men toil for something greater than individual honors. They toil as brothers-in-arms, as 53 spirits striving towards a single purpose and driven by a single goal: The glory that comes with vanquishing your foes. They will achieve their birthright, they will be champions.

by Sudden on Sep 14, 2010 5:00 PM CDT reply actions

I Agree

I want Charles to have the ball more. I just want him to have the first couple of series then go to a rotation or whatever fits the game. We have had way to many punts on our first 2 series this year and Jamal is our best RB to change that. We don’t have a team that can play from behind well and if we don’t get off to a fast start agains the Colts or the Texans we might be down bby 14 before JC hits the field.

"We have had way to many punts on our first 2 series this year"

You do realize that for the year our first 2 series are our only first 2 series? I do get what everyone is saying though. I was even asking by series #3, “has Charles even been in the game yet?” I’m not upset at who does or doesn’t get the start. I was just upset we weren’t trying to get one of our backs around the corner. It seemed pretty effective in preseason and I believe it would have helped our passing game.

Built-in emergency QB with McCluster

means we don’t have to worry much about both QBs going down in one game. I wouldn’t want them to grab a third QB for the 53-man, and thereby eject another player, unless there was somebody available that they really believed in.
