Chiefs vs. Chargers: Will Dexter McCluster Play?

Photo

Kansas City Chiefs WR Dexter McCluster missed last Friday's practice in Kansas City, MO. It was a bit of a surprise but we didn't think much of it at the time.

Then on Saturday afternoon the Chiefs listed McCluster as doubtful for Monday night's game against the San Diego Chargers with an illness. In the league's language, doubtful means there's a near certainty the player won't play. Chargers LB Shawne Merriman is listed as doubtful and no one expects him to play at this point.

That was followed by McCluster practicing on Saturday night and the Chiefs upgrading his condition from doubtful to questionable. The upgrade is significant for those wanting to see McCluster's debut.

Questionable means there's a 50-50 chance of playing.

If the Chiefs went to the trouble of upgrading his condition, I feel that's an indication he'll play. Still, though, it's important to recognize that it was just 48 hours ago that the McCluster's illness was so bad that they thought he would miss Monday's game.

I"m betting McCluster will play. How effective he'll be will depend on exactly what his illness is.

One Arrowhead Drive

is full of mystery and intrigue!

I was mad as $#%@ when we drafted Dexter McCluster and now I'm ordering his jersey......oh the irony! Go Chiefs!

Chargers were geared up

for McCluster. it’s a let down psychologically for the Chargers to hear this. that’s all it amounts to, he’ll play.

Agreed

I just love how I told the GF that our new regime loves to play these little Jedi mind tricks, then as soon as I get back from vacay, I see Hali and McCluster are doubtful…..

I think we’ll see them both at their best tonight!

the Dex factor will play

it’ll be fun to see how they use him

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

by stagdsp on Sep 13, 2010 12:49 PM CDT reply actions

It is entirely possible that Dex has a staph infection

this would allow him to be healthy enough to practice (without contact) yet still be considered unlikely to play.

by KC_Satchmo on Sep 13, 2010 12:50 PM CDT reply actions

is that pure speculation, or is there any reason to believe he might have a staph infection?

this isn’t Cleveland :)

No inside info on this one

the lips are sealed at One Arrowhead Drive these days. There are just very few things that would:

1) Be common for an athlete
2) Be listed as an illness
3) Prevent play but not practice
4) Improve dramatically 1 day after initial treatment.

If I were a betting man, I’d have staph listed as the favorite.

by KC_Satchmo on Sep 13, 2010 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Supposedly he was upgraded to "questionable" yesterday though

I think it’s mostly a smokescreen to confuse the Chargers…then again being a fan I’m an optimist :)

This year will be better

Now that the season is starting

I’ll prolly check in a bit. Less Madden GMing and more actual football talk is a more tolerable read for me.

agreed man

it can get testy here in the offseason that is for sure… I know I had to step out a couple of times

TOUCHDOWN! KAN-SAH-CITY!!!

by TheScootness on Sep 13, 2010 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions

He will play.

It would take a lot to keep him off the field IMO. Too bad for the Chargers though. While they’re focused on him, Charles, and Jones, Bowe and Co. will killem.

by Chiefs_40 on Sep 13, 2010 12:50 PM CDT reply actions

The bigger question is: Will he have an impact?

I think he will play, I’m just not convinced that he’ll have as much impact as we all would like to see. In my dream world Dex is in the slot running wild in the secondary, and in the backfield beating the defense to the corner. In my dream world he has 4 carries for 60 yards and a TD, 4 receptions for 80 yards and a TD. But the more likely scenario: 10 plays, 2 carries for 10 yards, 1 catch for 10 yards, 0 TD. And sadly, only 3 pts in my PPR fantasy league.

Haley always seems so concerned about revealing information...

Makes me believe he thinks he’s throwing some sort of brilliant smoke screen with this whole McCluster debacle. I’m almost certain he’ll play.

by m.yashi on Sep 13, 2010 12:54 PM CDT reply actions

Let's go Dex!

I’m headed out of Manhattan…see you all at Arrowhead. GO CHIEFS!!!

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Sep 13, 2010 12:54 PM CDT reply actions

Doesn't matter, really.

Of course we all want him to play, and have an impact on the game.

Bottom line, though…we have to take care of business with, or without him.

10 + wins in 2010. Chiefs SHOCK the NFL!!! Mark it down.

by Scott B. on Sep 13, 2010 12:58 PM CDT reply actions

ehhh...then it DOES matter...yes, they must handle business...but business with be much easier with mccluster...therefore...it matters

its also another game for him to get comfortable, get in synch…

this is VERY important…1/16…cant happen, he needs to play every game he can

Maybe Dex was standing too close to Berry and caught a case of Awesome-itis.

So you got the fax. So why didn't you add it to the resume? What do you mean? Of course martial arts training is relevant.

Norv Turner's face looks like he has leprocy

Yet he still coaches.

C’mon Dex, if Norv can walk the sidelines looking like Robert the Bruce’s father, you can take a few plays to the house tonight,.

no reason to risk injury...

its a long season… and this is merely the first game… he shouldnt be in there unless he is 100%…

by Abyssmal on Sep 13, 2010 1:01 PM CDT reply actions

first of all i said RISK injury...

and 100% is relative… if he is not healthy enough to play the game, he should not be in there… no matter how much we bathe in the kool aid…

this isn't merely the first game.

@it’s THE GAME. @

the game is physical enough as it is...

not to mention, he is still a rookie… last i looked we still do have a weapon or two on offense… i am hard pressed to believe that mccluster will make or break the chiefs…

by Abyssmal on Sep 13, 2010 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

the illness was brokenshoeitis.

they have came out with a new Teflon shoe that is immuned to Dex’s burst. problem solved. or at least they think so.

Smokescreen

I’m guessing he is going to play. We listed him on the injury report so San Diego doesn’t quite prepare fully for him, I’m hoping.

I wonder...

If these statuses are set by the medical personnel who are robotic scientist types and Haley has nothing to do with it?

If he was practicing hard, then there is no way he’d stay off the field.
