Chiefs vs. Chargers: Dexter McCluster Is Unlikely To Play
If I recall, Friday's practice was the first Kansas City Chiefs WR Dexter McCluster has missed since becoming a member of the Chiefs.
And now he's doubtful for game one.
Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com has the official listings for the Chiefs injury report:
- LB Cameron Sheffield: Out
- WR Dexter McCluster: Doubtful
- LB Tamba Hali: Questionable
- RT Ryan O'Callaghan: Questionable
Doubtful means there's about a 75% chance the player won't play. McCluster has missed practice with an illness. This is concerning because McCluster was expected to fulfill a few roles for the Chiefs. With Jerheme Urban also out for the season, the Chiefs are reaching far into their pool of receivers.
For the Chargers, LB Shawne Merriman is listed as doubtful.

What kind of illness can put you doubtful 3 days before a game?
I hope it’s not chlamidia.

Chlamydia?
No, seriously, I was thinking the same thing. You always hear about guys having the flu the day before a game and still coming out to play the following day. Sure they aren’t 100%, but it happens.
This is a little odd – I really hope it’s nothing serious. Get well Dex… get well soon.

I think his chances are better then what the report says because of why he is doubtful.
Like I said in the fanshot, Dex is out with an illness(cold/flu?) and the odds of that improving over the course of three days is far more likely then say a guy who’s doubtful with a ankle sprain or something like that. These reports are based on his condition at the time of the report which again feeling deathly sick with the flu one day and feeling near completely better then next day isnt uncommon.

Another thing to watch is we're shorthanded at WR

I'd want him too.. But, anyway
Hali is a must at being in the game even tho i think Williams would do an okay job with his hand down.. I really don’t see mccluster being gone as much of a setback.. Ya he’d be a great weapon cause he can do everything but, i wanna see horne anyway.. I think horne might be a great wr and would be nearly impossible to cover from the slot..
I don't know about impossible
I think he would be more like a Patrick Crayton type.
Smile, its the second best things you can do with your lips!

Is nobody else concerned about Hali being questionable?
This would definitely be a blow to the D if Hali can’t play… and it will suffer to have him unable to play at full speed.

Ehh
It’s hard to say how much this hurts our chances when we haven’t seen him play a game yet, and we don’t know just how much they intended to use him. It definitely doesn’t help. Horne is a decent story as a ufa, but the kid is not scaring anybody lining up out of the gate as a third receiver.
Those kind of talent/responsibility mismatches are what you get on a bad team
I'm doubtful that he's really all that doubtful...
So let me get this straight… He comes down with some mysterious “illness” 3 days before the game, and that’s going to keep him out? Sounds like a pretty wicked bug… This just stinks of the Chiefs trying to throw up a smoke screen.

McCluster bandwagon
I know theres quite a few people on the McCluster bandwagon. I’m not one of them. What exactly is his role on this team? WR? Too short to be effective. RB? We have speed at that position already in Jamal Charles. KR? Count me on the Javier Arenas bandwagon on that one. Plus he has played better at that position. So where exactly is he slotted to play? 3rd RB? 2nd KR? 3rd/4th WR?
Dont get me wrong, I like the speed. The height/weight thing is his downfall, but just as important, he’s being plugged into roles that we already have solutions for. If we lacked players at any of the positions hes in the slot for, I’d be much happier with him on this team. Right now, hes just a duplicate, only much smaller. I’d rather see him traded to a team that can cough up a good draft pick. This team lacks depth at some key positions.
Ok. Light me on fire. I know you McCluster fans think this kid is the answer to everything.
He's got a skill set that you have to gameplan for
And with the exception of Charles, he’s the only other guy on our team who needs just a little open space and it’s a TD.
Granted he hasn’t played a down yet but he’s a player that an opposing defense always needs to find and they know that.
I'd rather be a failure at something I love than a success at something I hate.
- George Burns
Hes fast, no doubt about it. You say with the exception of Charles….well, tell me how many carries Jones/Charles are going to give up to get McCluster the ball? I’d rather see another receiver in the mix. McCluster just doesnt fit this team with all the roles he can play in, filled.
I think he's perfect for the wr slot
yeah he’s short but he’ll be getting those short passes and get hella yac.
I just dont see how he can survive in the slot given his height/weight. Trying to think of a slot receiver to compare him to with similar stats and I’m drawing a blank.
let him be him
why do you have to compare?
The coaches seem to think he will be fine as an Offensive weapon
I'd rather be a failure at something I love than a success at something I hate.
- George Burns
You have to compare
You have to determine how to use his talent (speed). Comparison must be made to determine if his speed is better than the position you’re trying to place him. Granted, his speed is remarkable. What kills him is the height/weight. I dont get why you want to over look that. Would you put a tackle on the o-line if he was 5’11" 210 lbs? Its the same as putting him at WR.
Would you put a tackle on the o-line if he was 5’11" 210 lbs? Its the same as putting him at WR.
Really?
I'd rather be a failure at something I love than a success at something I hate.
- George Burns
Name for me an effective WR in the league today thats 5’6" and 160lbs. Just one. So that comparison is accurate. a 210 pound tackle would get owned. Just like a 5’6" receiver will get owned.
If you think that analogy makes sense this will be a "short" convo :)
Name one reason Dexter won’t be good as a slot WR? Besides getting hurt, he’s got popped quite a bit and he gets up every time.
I'd rather be a failure at something I love than a success at something I hate.
- George Burns
Chose to avoid my question? Cant name an effective 5’6" receiver?
Receivers in this league dont do well under 5’10". Thats just a fact.
I get you’re excited about his speed. Its hard to to be. But speed is his only atribute. Everything else, given the others on this team that already fill a position, is his down fall.

I concur. But I think I’d rather see another receiver on the team. It may just be a case of make do with what you have, but I cant think of a situation the team will find themselves in this year where McCluster could make a big impact. That is, barring injuries elsewhere.
I know you're hung up on the size thing but....
whats the point of having another receiver out there who is just bigger? I dont see the rationale. They won’t be as fast, quick, or versatile.

I highly doubt our regime would draft McCluster just to trade him for draft pick(s). So I wouldn’t count or even hope he get’s traded because it’s unlikely.
We don’t have solutions for all roles he’s being plugged into. We don’t have any true, decent slot receiver’s so he will fill that role fine. He’ll get a couple carries with Jones and Charles making the defense respect all of them and keep them on their toes.

Dexter being unable to play on Monday night would have a huge impact on who wins the game. Yes, I think he is that much a part of the game plan. Not just this week, but every week. He is so important, getting those first downs on the ground, being able to stretch the field and open things up with his speed, and most importantly being a quick pass option for Matt cassel. Jamaal Charles...Enough said.
Dex is going to be a huge part of this offense.
Not having him is a setback if he can’t play, but it is not the end of the world. Charles and Jones are still fine, as well as Jackie Battle. Bowe and Chambers are fine. We have enough weapons to perform without him, although I would prefer to have him on the field. Brian 69 you are certainly entitled to your opinion on Dexter, but I think you are completely wrong. McCluster is definitely going to make a name for himself as a Chief.
"The Hammer"
Look at the players you just named. You have a number one back in Jones (for now). Number two is Charles. Power runner and a speed runner. Deadly. In case one of those goes down, I think Battle can step in and do “ok”.
Bowe and Chambers are a different story. I dont buy that McCluster can make it as a WR. Hes WAY too short. The team has him listed at 5’8" but hes much closer to 5’6". Do you recall the last receiver we had at that height? Quick guy but was covered up by every DB in the league. McCluster is no different. He cant be compared or even talked about in the discussion with WR’s. In college, yes. Not with the big boys.
The only real place to use him is at KR. Given his lack of performance in the pre-season, that job has gone to Arenas.
So unless Charles or Arenas gets injured, I cant see a good reason to keep him on the team when there are depth issues that could be addressed.
Stop the hating on McCluster

This wouldve been the craziest thing I've read on the site today
Had the looney “unbiased” Raider fan not said that their rookie center is a 6’5 center caught in a 6’8 body.

He has a long torso
I'd rather be a failure at something I love than a success at something I hate.

I disagree. It's crazier than the Raider fan comment.

Some of his past comments are just as dumb
He likes to start “S##T”

Dude… DID YOU EVEN WATCH THE PRESEASON GAMES? He had a bunch of 30 and 40 yard returns.

Watching McCluster is the best argument
for his success. Anyone who can look at his performance on the field and say he is not going to be big in the NFL is either being totally disingenuous or is not very schooled on what it takes to be an NFL player that delivers.
"The Hammer"
tamba hali is going to win us this game. at least 2 sacks and at least one of his hurries WILL force a turnover without McNeil
We also really need McCluster because the Chargers dbs are not deep at all, they are under average at best outside of Jammer and that includes safeties. Also, merriman is their best coverage LB, with McCluster there, they would just have to watch him catch 8 yarder after 8 yarder, or take a CB off Chambers or Bowe.
We need both of them to win
Merriman
is also listed as doubtful, but he’s really not playing
if dext is out we lose
Just sayin the guy adds a x factor. ANd teams just can’t plan for him.
by the way Isn’t this what new england did for a long time list everyone doubtful so you had no clue who’s going to play ?

merriman
it doesn’t matter…the chargers play well with or without him. He has only 5 sacks in his last 15 games
Not way more speed...he could run rings around Welker, while he's running his routes.

I don't see the direct parallel with Dante Hall that some make.
They’re both pretty small, but McCluster is much more of an all-around football player. Main valid comparison is the quickness and burst. Both are also very fast on a line, with edge to Dante, perhaps, but in every other respect, McCluster shows more like a football player. He blocks, he’ll make a tough catch, he’ll get yards after contact, you can just hand him the ball as a regular HB. I think KC was much more limited in the ways they could get Dante the ball, because his ball skills weren’t as good. He could run around people, but you got a finger on him, and he’d go down.
McCluster and Arenas both are surprisingly TOUGH runners, caroming off would-be tacklers, and somehow keeping their feet. I think both McCluster and Arenas are much stronger in the upper body than Hall ever was, and both show ME a lot more promise in significant playing time on regular O and D, respectively. There was only so much you could do with Hall…
"I ain't lyin' 'bout nothin'."
"Oh? So what exactly are you lying about?"
hall thrived under fantastic coaching and a great wedge unit...wouldnt even happen in today's nfl with the wedge rule
Hall was nice for a few big plays but mostly was the product of the people around him, Gary Stills and co were the best in the business.
Team Pioli/Haley. Decade of the Chiefs.
Team Colquitt
Hall also became the victim of his own success.
Over time, he became an all or nothing guy who would run backwards (ala Horne), instead of just accepting what was there. He wanted to score a TD every time, which is admirable, but at some point you have to realize that it’s better to gain 5 yards than lose 10. You can’t score a TD every time, no matter how good you are.
