NFL Roster Cuts: Kansas City Chiefs Roster Bubble And Locks

So I've started to trim down the Kansas City Chiefs roster for Saturday's cut down day. The Chiefs must go from 75 to 53 players meaning 22 players will be released by Saturday afternoon.

I went through the entire Chiefs roster and picked out the guys that I thought were locks to make the roster. It would take a Bernard Pollard-sized surprise for one of the locks to be released. As Pollard has shown us, what we think is a lock and what GM Scott Pioli thinks is a lock are two different things.

I also went through and put all the players into one group that were not locks -- bubble players. Some players -- like Maurice Leggett and Shaun Smith -- are probably going to make the roster. But can you say that for sure? I'm not sure that you can. Another example -- both Rudy Niswanger and Casey Wiegmann are listed under the bubble players. No, they're not going to cut them both but can't you envision a scenario where they keep one over the other? I'm not sure who's in the lead at this point.

The Chiefs currently have 75 players. I've got this split up with 40 bubble players and 35 locks. That means in my scenario there are 40 players playing for 18 roster spots (plus the practice squad).

I'm sure you won't all agree with me so give us your take in the comments.

Kind of offtopic(a bit) but that's a pretty impressive list of 35 core players to me.

Sure there’s some obvious holes still but I don’t think if we did this same thing at this time last year the lock list would be quite as impressive or as long as it is now.

agreed

I feel like pretty much all of the starting jobs are held by players who actually belong starting in the NFL… which is nice, as compared to 2009.

Sure, you can always upgrade most positions… but things are looking up

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

Rocky Boiman anyone?

Ouch.

I have to agree there

But I’d imagine we were probably saying the same thing last year when guys like Studebaker, Belcher and Gilberry were on the bubble. Alot of young guys there that we have to let develop.

But, yeah, I admit there are some easy-cut, camp-fodder guys on that list, as always

I agree

I think there should have been a 3rd section for guys who are already packing there bags… When you’re fighting for a roster spot and get a monster kick return called back for fucking taunting you’re doneskie son. Goodbye, David Herron, Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out. I wouldn’t have locked up Barry Richardson. He was eaten alive on Friday, and just straight fucked up and let some unblocked rushers through. I think he played his way into the bubble. Also, I agree with a few I’ve read about Battle. He has fought, He wants it, and He’s getting it. If he plays like this all season, then we’ve got nasty depth at running back.

I would put these guys on a “near lock” list, as it would take a decent surprise to knock them out…

 LS Thomas Gafford
RB Jackie Battle
RB Tim Castille

by stagdsp on Sep 1, 2010 4:36 PM CDT reply actions

I'm expecting Brown to be let go for practice squad.

Niswanger can play two positions and Haley seems to like him so I think he’s a lock, Gafford is the only longsnapper that we have really, and I think Copper is a lock because of his ST play and noticed as well they throw him into the offense on certain running plays and screens for his blocking ability.

"Success is never ending, failure is never final."

by GenericBrand on Sep 1, 2010 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions

you're probably right

it’s probably Brown v Ndukwe for the last OL spot right now, and IF they think Brown could clear waivers, he could easily be the one cut.

I like Wiege as the starter, but Rudy is more of a lock to make the roster, with the versatility you mentioned.

Haley loves Copper, and, as much as I’d like to find a replacement for him, he seems to be a lock to me, too. I think Battle makes it for the ST ability as well.

The Donald Washington project is still in the early stages, so I think he stays for sure.

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

by stagdsp on Sep 1, 2010 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Washington is young too.

He came out early and those guys, not to mention his position change, tend to take a bit longer to develop. Man I wish we could stick Caseys brain into Niswangers noggin’.

by JacinB on Sep 1, 2010 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I think

Copper could be in trouble because we have a lot more guys that are willing to really get after it on ST. I know Haley loves the guy, but he loved Lance Long too. I wouldn’t be shocked on him either way.

I agree with others that Brown will probably end up on the practice squad.

I agree that they will probably keep 2 FB, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they cut one.

by KCporkchop on Sep 1, 2010 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I considered that too

Seemed more and more likely that Horne would be the perfect candidate to replace Copper and maybe add something to the team with more pass catching ability. But Haley also came from a team where a guy like Sean Morey was worth keeping around for everything he does outside of catching the ball and my gut says Copper will stay.

"Success is never ending, failure is never final."

by GenericBrand on Sep 1, 2010 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm still not sure about 2 FBs

Someone needs to sell me on the benefits of keeping two fullbacks (Cox and Castille). I like Cox* and I like Castille but is either or both good enough to justify eating an extra roster spot?

I’m going to predict Cox as a surprise cut. Castille seems to have more upside outside of the blocking game. Perhaps there is an injury concern – but could we not use Battle or one of the TEs in a pinch?

Plus it’s not like FBs are a hot commodity – there is a decent chance that if we let one of them slide we could snag them out of free agency if the need arose.

I thought it was odd the Colts let him go, but if he can fit the scheme here, I think he is an upgrade for that line. I still want to see another top tier guard. Maybe in the draft next year. Thankfully, Lilja has played well enough to earn the position, based on who his current competition is anyway…

My potential surprise cut

Jon McGraw.

I don’t really expect it, but that’s what would make it a surprise. There’s a lot of young guys at safety and on ST so he could be expendable, but I doubt it.

by bh13 on Sep 1, 2010 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think so

Last year Pollard was a shocker because he was running 1st team all camp. Then he got into a big argument with Clancy, and poof, he was gone. It was a message cut. This year, there is no need for any message cuts. This team buys in.

by dablueguy on Sep 1, 2010 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I HATED Cutting Pollard at the time, and hated it more when he turned in an All Pro Season with Houston

And hated it even more when we drafted Berry, because Berry and Pollard would be hands down the best safety combo in the NFL. But what’s done is done, and hopefully Kendrick Lewis can become a reasonable facsimile of what Pollard did last year.

by dablueguy on Sep 2, 2010 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I realize one of them isn't always healthy, but Bob Sanders and Antoine Bethea might have something to say about that.

Heck, even Antoine Bethea and Melvin Bullitt are pretty good. Darren Sharper and Roman Harper aren’t too shabby either. I’d maybe even argue Kerry Rhodes and Adrian Wilson, just off the top of my head. Plus it’s entirely possible that Pollard played so well for Houston because he’s a much better fit for their scheme than ours. He’s much better in run than pass protection, and our safeties need to be able to cover.

The same with Shaun Smith. He our 3rd best DL even if the Chiefs won't admit it.

Leggett is your nickel CB and your best back up at safety.
Castille can be your FB and the least #3 TE. The #3 TE will be inactive all year anyway so go ahead and cut O’Connell.

Do you really think Castille is a better TE than O'Connel?

I do realize that the Chiefs might shift into the Double Tight end set.
Well maybe, I guess if Castille is going to help on a double and then drift off in the flat.
Yet Castille has not had a lot of targets in the pre-season.

I watched the Texans game the other day

and Pollard looked BOSS. He was everywhere making plays. All around the ball. His tackling skills are phenomenal. I miss him but he really didn’t fit into our defense. The Texans needed him and WITH him their defense is scary. I’m happy Pollard has found success. I think the Texans could be a playoff team this year with Arian Foster and Steve Slaton running the ball. And with their D they could go deep. Unfortunately, with Pollard being one of the main players in their new D we won’t hear the end of his release from KC on a national level anytime soon. In fact, it will probably be magnified if he makes the pro bowl.

holy mackerel ... that's one helluva big bubble

Joel, you must be blowing extra hard to get a bubble THAT big …

I think about half those guys (roughly) are locks, though I can see your point … “you just never know sometimes”

Ndukwe is toast

as he has a big contract and hasn’t proved he can play. Last year was crap and this year the same. MsGraw is slow but experienced. I wonder how he makes the cut when we have so many better athletes than him. It;s gonna be hard to cut him and hard to keep him when you want to keep these young guys. Coach Emmitt will be the deciding factor, and he wasn’t here last year, so????

Niswanger (Obvious)
Weigman (Duh)
Lokey (Has played his ass off)
Shaun Smith (Depth)
Cox (FB is REALLY anyone’s spot between this guy and Castille)
Ndukwe (Depth)
Gafford (… He’s a Long Snapper. C’mon)
Palko (#3 QB)
Battle (Hell yes!)
Castille (See Cox)
Horne (Flashing)
Brown (Depth)
Richardson (No particular reason, but I like him a lot more than Bates or Daniels)
Leggett (Fighter)
Greenwood (Versatile)
Walters (Special Teams)
Morgan (…)
Copper (Special Teams and can play WR)

I think the toughest decision was between Copper and Lawrence. Lawrence is quick and would be great on Punt Coverage, but that’s about all he can do. He’s never really shown the ability to click in the offense. Copper on the other hand has.
At CB it’s really just a toss up.
LB was tough, but in regards to depth, it doesn’t really matter who it is. As far as Special Teams goes, I really like Heron. But I guess we could develop Cory Greenwood in that field.

I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin.

Not on the Bubble

Jackie Battle - No way this guy gets cut or sent to Practice Squad. He’s actually looked better than Thomas Jone (IMO)

Jared Allen wouldn't have fit the 3-4 anyway...

Agreed that he won't be cut

RB should look like this: Jaamal Charles, Thomas Jones, Jackie Battle, Dex.

How do you feel about the Jared Allen trade now with Morgan on the block?

Let’s see a converted college guard and a no talent unneeded safety for a perennial pass rushing all pro fan favorite badass. How good would our defense be if Carl wasn’t such an egotestical (intentionally mispelled) ignoramus?!!
I hope we keep Dion Gales. I don’t care if it is on the practice squad. His sack against Philly backups was downright Sappian. I believe it is the only down lineman sack this pre-season.

correction: it was Jared for a 1st and TWO thirds

the other 3rd round pick was #25. That helps ease the pain a little.

Jared Allen wouldn't have fit the 3-4 anyway...
