Chiefs vs. Packers Preseason: Getting To Know The Enemy

The Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers will meet at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night for the preseason finale.

I talked with Brandon over at Acme Packing Company about a couple of things Packers-related items.

The first question was about Aaron Rodgers sitting out (waiting on Favre) before becoming the starter. I figured that was relevant to the Chiefs because Matt Cassel sat for several years before becoming the starter. I also asked about Bryan Bulaga. Remember him?

Two questions and answers after the jump.

Star-divide

How much of a difference did it make for Aaron Rodgers to sit on the bench for the first few years? Did it help him a lot?

QB Aaron Rodgers was awful during his limited playing time in 2005 and 2006. He wasn't ready and the rest of the offense didn't help him either. They rebuilt the offensive line and receiving corps through the 2006 draft. QB Brett Favre had an awful 2006 season statistically, and I can't imagine Rodgers would have done any better. His career stat lines might have avoided a couple ugly seasons, but he was ready to start by 2007. He's always seemed to have a lot of confidence in himself and I don't think an awful rookie season would have lessened it in the long run.

How's Bryan Bulaga coming along? There were some folks who thought the Chiefs might take him.

Bryan Bulaga is going to be a really good left tackle in the NFL. He looks like a natural at the position, he moves laterally with ease, and the pass rusher is done once he gets his hands on him. Unfortunately I don't expect you'll see him on Thursday because he missed the last preseason game with a hip flexor and they don't seem eager to rush him back.

Confidence

That is what Aaron Rodgers has and Cassell doesn’t. The guy checks down way too soon. Not that he can throw a deep ball anyway though. I hope he at least makes some improvement this year. I would be happy if he just didn’t hurt us. Doesn’t have to help us, just don’t hurt us.

He’s MUCH better than Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. Shit, at least Tony Romo has won a freaking playoff game.

Read any publication or listen to Sirius 124 for more than 12 minutes

Green Bay will win the Superbowl. I don’t even know why they are even going to play the games, they might as well just award them the friggin thing.

I’m not convinced however that their O-Line problem is fixed, Rodgers (until he proves elsewise) does not play well on the big stage and their secondary is beat up. They have a very hard schedule, they face some very ferocious front 4’s and they can’t run the ball consistantly. Other than all that they are a good team. I smell 8-8 or 9-7 and 2nd place in the NFC North. That being said, Lambeau field is probably the raddest place in North America and the Sports Bar adjacent to the Stadium is a good time…

Dude, they took the guy we should have taken...

Bulaga is the next Willie Roaf. Combine him with Jordy Nelson (next Wes Welker) and they can’t be beat.

by HIV 2 Elway on Sep 1, 2010 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions

No, we didn't.

Whatever Bulaga does, good for him. Doesn’t mean we should have taken him, or any other player that came after #5.

That’s just the nature of the beast when you have so many needs.

I think Adam Schein is on the pack's payroll

He’s WAY overboard on the GB to the Super Bowl thing. That said, I think they’re one of the three best in the NFC (Dallas & Minny).

If the Pack throws the ball all year, they won’t win the SB. You gotta have at least a LITTLE balance. That makes Ryan Grant a pivotal player for them this year.

by Ozarks on Sep 1, 2010 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Adam Schein can eat a dick.

He’s one guy who I friggin can’t stand on Sirius. He’s not even a Packer fan, he’s just a Favre hater, and always has been….and that isn’t the reason I can’t stand him. He does have some good things to say about the Chiefs, but he is WAY to opinionated and refuses to let facts and reason cloud his preconceived notions.

Actually, that sounds alot like me.

by South Texas Chief on Sep 1, 2010 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions

If Bulaga is going to be a really good left tackle in the NFL

what’s keeping him from cracking the starting lineup? I saw an article that said the starters had been decided and Bulaga wasn’t one of them.

Spending a 1st round pick on an o-lineman who doesn’t start as a rookie is disappointing, for the team and the rookie.

Mark Taucher and Chad Clifton > Any Rookie in the League

Bulaga will get plenty of snaps in a rotation, but Tauch and Clifton still have some tread on their tires. I’m a huge Taucher fan, he gave me tickets to Lambeau on the 7th row on the 45. I sat next to Ahman Greens wife and played with the Long Snappers little kid.

Ya, because our Oline clearly doesn't need any help.

10 months of the year, the offensive struggles are attributed to the O-line. The 2 months before the draft our Oline is suddenly fine because drafting Olinemen isn’t as sexy as Safeties or Linebackers.

by jrcnc on Sep 1, 2010 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

My point was, there was a strong foundation on the O-Line

IMO building the strong Oline, you don’t need to throw a tonne of money at the offensive skill positions. I just think spending high draft picks and multimillion dollar contracts on QB’s WR’s and skat backs is less effective than building a killer line. Then again my phone ain’t exactly ringing off the hook for a personel director of a NFL team

by craig in calgary on Sep 1, 2010 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

no I agree the foundation is set on both sides of the ball in the trenches

so far Pioli has tried to address one side through the draft and still getting mixed results. The OLine has finally started to be addressed when we took Asamoah. I agree its alot cheaper to build up a dynamic OLine then put playmakers out there with them.
But in the current state of the Chiefs, its going to suck seeing the money thrown at the #5 type of picks regardless of position, just because we are so devoid of talent.

The picture is a Chiefs pumpkin, yeah that is right a Chiefs pumpkin.

you can look at it any different way
drafting Bulaga white flag that OLine can’t block for anything
drafting WR white flag that no one can catch
drafting NT white flag that no one can get pressure…..

You tell me...

Nate Allen: 5 tackles.
Eric Berry: 12 tackles, 1 pass deflection

In limited stats, Berry is showing up a hell of a lot more… I mean shit… he’s leading our team in tackles… and the Chiefs total defense is ranked 6th in the preseason… I know that doesn’t mean much, but still, that’s in the company of teams that are expected to be pretty damn good on defense (Jets, Steelers, Niners, Vikings, Panthers). You tell me how much he brings to this team compared to the Allen or Byrd. Early indications lead me to think he’s a key player on the Chiefs D.

Can’t really compare Berry to Byrd just yet. Byrd has a full NFL season under him, yet hasn’t done anything this preseason. And besides… I’m not sure how we were supposed to pick Byrd. We either took him at the 3rd overall or not at all. He went 42nd overall, and we were kind of short on 2nd round picks last year.. And you call Jackson a reach ;-)

Hasn't played much this preseason.

That’s not to say O’Callaghan > Bulaga, but I’d argue the gap between the two, at least this year, is less than the gap between Eric Berry and Mike Brown. Additionally I’d argue that a truly elite safety (which Berry has the potential to become) in the vein of Troy Polamalu or Ed Reed generally has a bigger impact on the team than an elite right tackle. We can find a more than competent RT in the next draft, Eric Berrys don’t necessarily come along every year.

Doesn't matter much right now...

Both Bulaga and O’Cal are out indefinitely. Neither one can help their respective team while riding a bike.

In the last preseason game? The least meaningful of all of the meaningless preseason games?

I’m not saying the Chiefs can’t win this game. But if Brodie Croyle outplays Matt Flynn or our second and third team defenses shut down the Packer’s second and third string offenses it will not suddenly cause people to anoint the Chiefs as the favorites in the AFC West, nor will it cause those same people to proclaim the downfall of Green Bay as one of the dominant teams in the NFC. And, quite frankly, nor should it.
