What's New Around the AFC

The NFL Preview Extravaganza continues, putting the Chiefs to the side momentarily, and putting the spotlight on their competitors for the coveted Lamar Hunt Trophy. Every team is about a week in to training camp by this point, and we were even got to sit through treated to some awful football last night for the first time this season (the highlight was the Cowboys play to down a punt at the 1 yard line, a play that is oftentimes faltered). So look back to this post when your making your preseason prognostications, as some in-depth analysis is sure to follow...

AFC WEST

Denver Broncos- The Donkeys lost their best two players from last year in Brandon Marshall and Elvis Dumervil, along with a host of others (like rookie receiver Demaryius Thomas, who was one of my early favorites for Rookie of the Year before getting hurt). I think McDaniels is a good coach, but not that good. The Broncos are gonna be terrible, unless they drafted Jesus H. Christ or something…

Oakland Raiders- Jason Campbell is their guy now. He's adjusting to a 9th learned system in his quarterbacking career. Or as Ferris Bueller's principal puts it, 'niiiine times'. Seriously though, nine different systems! This leads me to believe he could make for an intriguing option in the future after he's allowed to truly learn one.

San Diego Chargers- They have some serious issues right now with the holdouts of Vincent Jackson, Marcus McNeill and Entourage star Shawne Merriman (nice cameo, chump. Just because I wanted you in the offseason does not change the fact that I despise you.) All three players are threatening to sit out until Week 10, which is commonly said but rarely followed through upon. However, the bigwigs say it's a bigger possibility this year due to the looming holdout that could be on the way come 2011. On a side note, there was one hilarious admission out of Chargers camp, about how things got awkward when the team had to lessen the role of the self-anointed "Classiest player in the League," LaDainianson. Stay classy, sally. Have fun carrying Shonn Greene's shoulder pads.

AFC EAST

Biffalo Buffs- They hired Thigbone architect, Chan Gailey, as head coach. Although not a sexy name, he will make a good coach down the road. Not this year. The Bills should be one of the worst teams in the league. Too much transition with not enough talent. With their bevy of running backs (Marshawn Lynch, Fred Jackson, and C.J. Spiller) they should run the wishbone.

Miami Dolphins- Love the Dolphins. I believe they were the team that went through some tough times last year, lost some close games, and was truly better than their record. Then they added Karlos Dansby and Brandon Marshall. Chad Henne is on his way to becoming a good quarterback, he might still be a year away. I'll have the Dolphins in the playoffs this year.

New England Patriots- Interesting how the expectation levels have dropped for the Patriots, Tom Brady, and Tom Brady's hair. Rumor has it they have to eat a roster spot with his ever-growing locks. Good to see I'm not the only one listening to White Flight these days, with all the Boston ladies singing: "I wanna rub my fingers through your mane." These seem to be the conditions the Patriots thrive in. Although, I won't hop on the bandwagon until my boy Dave, the biggest in-the-closet Patriots fan of all time, breaks his streak of nine straight Patriot championship predictions. Nine times. One of the least talked about dynasties of this age. This is the year we find out if the stake has truly been planted in their Beliheart.

New York Jets- The biggest secret in the NFL is that the Jets are gonna suck. Every year there is a majority thinking on the surprise team of the NFL. More often than not, this team gets dragged down by overinflated expectations. The Jets seem to be the consensus this year. Need me remind you that the Jets were 7-7 last year before the Colts and Bengals, teams already in the playoffs, laid down for them, allowing them to sneak in the playoffs where they put together a nice little run? They're still reliant on Mark Sanchez, who threw 12 touchdowns and 20 interceptions last year. I understand the defense, but mark my words, the Jets won't finish over .500. And if you're still slobbin' the Jets knob, check out this noteworthy anecdote, courtesy of the Evil Empire:

***Revis is leaning heavily on his uncle and role model Sean Gilbert, who sat out the entire 1997 season before being traded from the Washington Redskins to the Carolina Panthers, where he landed the seven-year, $46.5 million deal he wanted.***

AFC SOUTH

Houston Texans- The team everybody wants to break out every season since their inception. Wait, was that thought mine? Or somebody else's? Damn you, Leo-Di! Not much has changed which could mean more of the same. In other news, I will be attending my first Chiefs road game in Week 6 at Houston. I'm still not sure if I'm more excited for that or the Monday Night home opener. Turns out there are some cool things about adulthood!

Indianapolis Colts- When is that pesky injury bug going to bite Peyton Manning? Doesn't it seem like it might be time for it? Tom Brady's came after a Super Bowl defeat. Just saying. Nothing is new with the Colts. They'll slumber though the near-meaningless regular season, with all judgment reserved for postseason success. I did love their Jerry Hughes pick, one of my favorites for Defensive Rookie of the Year, and somebody I'd at least consider trading Eric Berry straight up for.

Jacksonville Jaguars- Hard to say much about the Jaguars, so I'll leave it to an awesome offseason site I just discovered at www.walterfootball.com, who has this to say:

***The Jaguars are the laziest team in the NFL. They try hard in only two scenarios: If they're playing a divisional opponent or if they're a big underdog. Here's last year's proof:

Divisional Games (6): 3-3 (4-2 against the spread), 24.5 ppg, +1.5 point differential.
Non-Divisional Games (10): 4-6 (1-9 against the spread), 14.3 ppg, -9.9 point differential.***

Tennessee Titans- I hear Chris Johnson (who I love) yapping about rushing for 2,500 yards this year, which sounds like the mating call of the infirmary report. Warning to fantasy freaks and geeks, he was overworked last year and has higher aspirations this year. Oh well, he still led Bob Loblaw's Law Blog to a fantasy championship last year. The Titans lost a lot on defense, but don't count on Jeff Fisherstache leading back to back disappointing teams.

AFC NORTH

Baltimore Ravens- Definitely love the Anquan Boldin acquisition and the Ray Rice emergence. One of my favorites for the Super Bowl, as of right now, although Joe Flacco remains a question mark. Win or lose, Ray Lewis ranks as the best football player in totality of my lifetime. The Ravens have cycled through so much defensively, whether it be coordinators (Marvin, Singletary, Ryan) or players, but have always remained feared throughout his entire career. And he was the main cog in the most dominating unit I have laid eyes on, the Baltimore Ravens defense from 2000. Most people would automatically choose a quarterback, which I believe to be a flawed way of thinking.

Cincinnati Bengals- Hard to believe, but the Bengals transformed into a hard-nosed defensive/pounding the rock team. They won in spite of the pretty boys that remained from their aerial attack. In comes Terrell Owens (along with strip club buddies Pacman Jones and the Coke Zero version of Matt Jones), who I've always quietly been a fan of. He's no more of a diva than any other star receiver, and there's never been a doubt that he's bringing it on Sundays. Dude just wants to win. And maybe a little bit of attention. Now his teammate, his quarterback (cue the water works), Carson Palmer, must step up to give the Bungles a chance against a first place schedule this year (Hello SD, NE, and Indy!).

Cleveland Browns- Is this the year my boy, Seneca Wallace, finally gets his shot? I'm throwing down money on them to win it all if it is. They don't have much else on offense, besides some guy named Jerome Harrison, but surely any decent defense could shut him down. Oh, wait, he had how many yards? 286? That can't be right…Don't' worry Cleveland, there's always basketball season. Oh, wait…Maybe they can just get Delonte West to sleep with Mangini's wife or something…

Pittsburgh Steelers- Playing at least the first four games of the year without Big Ben. I'm pretty sure Lil' Ben has been suspended for the entire year. No telling when we might see the lil' guy again, but keep an eye out if the Steelers visit your hometown. At least he's not sending pictures of it over his phone. Or even worse, a hanging sack in the photo roll. Few people remember the Steelers dropped off last year way before Big Ben's JNCO's. They couldn't even limp into the playoffs. However, the schedule doesn't stiffen until after the refractory period, but expectations could go from six to midnight if the Pocket Rocket, Byron Leftwich, doesn't wilt to premature expectations. No homo.

NFC Preview coming soon!!!!!!

I am going with a Green Bay vs. Houston Texans Super Bowl this year in Dallas, TX. I would not be surprised to see Houston win it either, but GB will be a huge favorite. Look for Aaron Rodgers to be MVP this year also.

If everyone worked as hard as me, I would be out of a job.

Love it

I almost listed them as the next option, but didn’t pull the trigger. Love the outside the box pick. Thanks for reading.

I want to rec this... I really do.

But saying:

so I’ll leave it to an awesome offseason site I just discovered at www.walterfootball.com, who has this to say

Loses major points with me. Walter Football is a waste of your time. Did you know that Walter swore up and down that there was no way the Chiefs would pick Berry? He was soooo sure the Chiefs would take Bryan Bulaga… the same Bulaga that went to GB 17th overall. I can see having your top 10 picks shuffle around one or two spots… but the guy whiffed horribly on the 5th overall pick by more than 10 spots.

Walter is a dumbass. All in all his picks are generally pretty crappy. Look at his track record and you’ll see what I mean.

Come on Beast!

I wasn’t really checking out his draft stuff, just as much as his offseason movement lists. It was by far the best site I found when it came to that, very accessible. And I thought that quote was funny and true (and had nothing else to say on the Jaguars). As far as a rec goes, I’m not 100% sure what it is, but now you got me wanting one. Thanks for reading.

I hate his view on Chiefs as well

Because we didn’t pick Bulaga he gives us all kinds of hate over it, a lot of bias if you ask me. Including his views on Albert and Cassel

by ChiefWarPaint on Aug 9, 2010 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Walter Football kicks ass.

Just because they call out Cassel and Haley all the time, doesn’t take anything away from them. Cassel and Haley deserved being called out last year. And the Bulaga thing? Everybodies favourite Draft prognosticator Mike Mayock also picked Bulaga at 5….the draft is a crapshoot, for saying someone isn’t credible because they didn’t correctly pick the draft is in itself rediculous.

by craig in calgary on Aug 9, 2010 8:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I doubt you'll ever get back around to this, but,

No, Walter Football sucks ass. The guy is obviously biased against the Chiefs, let’s take a look

When talking about Jamaal’s breakout last year:

Is this cause for optimism for the 2010 season? Unfortunately for the Kansas City fan base, no. The Chiefs’ 34- and 44-point outputs came against the Browns and a Broncos team running on fumes. In the other two weeks, they scored just 20 total points versus Buffalo and Cincinnati. Kansas City’s offense still has way too many holes.

Really Walter? So adding Thomas Jones, a veteran high profile guard in Lilja and an explosive playmaker in McCluster doesn’t fill some of those holes? What about Weis? Anyone that argues that the Chiefs’ offensive woes aren’t being taken care of is wayyyyyyyyy off base here.

On Cassel:

Cassel is a fine backup-caliber player, but he is not a legitimate starting quarterback in this league. He has absolutely no arm strength, so opposing defenses don’t have to respect the pass or cover all the areas of the football field. Furthermore, Cassel is not accurate (55.0 completion percentage in 2009) and takes too many sacks. He does have some positive traits, but they are vastly outweighed by the negatives.

Way to leave out his 63% completion percentage in 2008. The argument is old, but Cassel has proven he can be an effective QB with play makers around him. That’s the goal, that’s what we’re giving him. Yeah, he takes a lot of sacks, but I’ll take sacks if he turns into the QB he was in 2008.

On Branden Albert:

Branden Albert is a pedestrian left tackle who commits way too many penalties and doesn’t do a good job of keeping pass-rushers out of the backfield. Albert surrendered all seven of his sacks in the first 11 weeks of the season, but still gave up tons of pressures late in the year when the coaching staff forced Cassel to get the ball out of his hands as quickly as possible. As a result, Cassel tossed 10 of his 16 interceptions in the final seven games. Albert’s sack rate dropped, but at what cost?

YAWN. More biased garbage. A LT has a sophomore slump (playing in a new scheme, at a new weight) and he’s labeled a “pedestrian LT”. Yeah, ok. Once again he completely ignores the entire career of the player. Never mind that his rookie season was solid. This guy is supposed to be a talent evaluator… the fact that he writes off one year of poor play under all the circumstances that Albert had to deal with last year is ridiculous.

Center Rudy Niswanger isn’t terrible

WTF ever Walter. We’ve watched this guy for 3 years now. If the Chiefs can’t coach him up in this training camp, he’s cut. The only reason he’s still on the roster is because he’s a high character guy, and I think Pioli is pulling for him… but if he doesn’t get it soon, he’s gone.

2010 Kansas City Chiefs Analysis: The Chiefs have no sense of direction right now. Their overpaid quarterback is terrible; the offensive line can’t block; the defensive line is the league’s worst; the pass rush doesn’t exist; and the head coach is mind-numbingly clueless. Kansas City is easily one of the worst teams in the NFL, and because general manager Scott Pioli has dug this franchise into such a deep hole, it doesn’t look like things will improve anytime soon.

Wow. No sense of direction? Scott Pioli has dug the franchise into such a deep hole? Wow… Wow… Wow… Craig, the fact that you can seriously read this guys biased, totally off base bull shit and call it “kick ass” amazes me.

Projection: 3-13 (4th in AFC West)

I’ll personally send Walter a letter of recognition for being the smartest man ever to live if he’s right about this. How, as a Chiefs fan, can you read this garbage and honestly say it’s not the most biased, off base, full of shit preview of a team you’ve ever seen?

by Red N Gold Beast on Aug 11, 2010 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Walter,

sometimes is in-accurate. HE says Kirk Morrison is a 4 star player, when he’s actually a 2 star.

I think the Chiefs will be a couple games better than 3-13, but not that much. The fact is is that he’s right.

Cassel has done nothing to prove he isn’t another Derek Anderson. Anderson got paid after being a one year wonder, and then fell off a cliff. The fact is is that Cassel was a 7th round pick who didn’t half close to the level of skill as tom Brady.

It also bothered me that he spent his entire career as a back-up at USC. Doesn’t that seem like he lacked the desire to play? Why not transfer to another school?

The offensive line is better than it was last season, but for you to say Lilja is high profile is going a little too far. He’s an okay lineman that just happened to be on a team led by Peyton Manning. That’s all. Plus, he’s injury prone. We’ll see.

The defensive line was the worst in the league last season. That’s just a fact. Especially, Jackson who was by far the league’s worst defensive starter last season.

It’s always possible Tamba Hali breaks out, but it’s awfully risky to put all your stock into one pass rusher. At least Denver has some depth after dumervil. If Hali goes down, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this team being a league worst again in sacks. It was that way last year, even with Hali.

McCluster better be a damn good player. To pass on guys such as Sergio Kindle and Koa Misi. For Chief fans sake, I hope he turns into a dynamic player.

To be honest, Haley isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. He benched your best linebacker for most of the season. He kicked to Josh Cribbs twice in the same game. He just isn’t too bright.

You guys have all this talk about Thomas Jones. His YPC last season was mediocre with the league’s best offensive line. He’s in for a rude awakening this season, if you ask me. Haley will further prove he’s a dumbass if he plays Jones over Charles.

Their’s potential on this team, but for you guys to expect a major wins increase, I just don’t see it happening. Cassel is the key, though.

Oh, I see...

I have legitimate complaints with Walter Football, and a Raiders fan has to come over and defend Walter? Come on man, I saw how you defended the Raiders over the Bill Barnwell and Football Outsiders criticism.

The Chiefs will win at least 7 games this year, but there’s no point in arguing over this, because it’s just a prediction.

Yes Cassel is a question mark. I know. But he really wasn’t that bad last year playing on a team with an OL that couldn’t pass protect, a non existent running game for half a season, no full time QB coach, and a WR corp that consisted mostly of Dwayne Bowe (who led all NFL receivers in drops), Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram and Lance Long. Chris Chambers didn’t come in until halfway through the year. Say what you want about Cassel, but a large majority of NFL QBs wouldn’t flourish under those circumstances. We’re giving him the tools now to at least prove that 2008 wasn’t a fluke.

Yep, the defensive line was not very good. But, Dorsey showed promise in playing in a new position, in a new scheme. Tyson Jackson was a rookie. We didn’t have depth at NT. Ron Edwards isn’t the ideal NT, but he can be serviceable with some depth. What do you expect? That we cut Dorsey and Jackson and start all over? No. You get them the best coaches you can, and work on developing them. Cue DC Romeo Crennel and DL Coach Anthony Pleasant. There is NO WAY the DL will be worse than it was last year, and only a fool would not expect at least some improvement from the 3rd and 2nd year DEs.

Tamba Hali has been a consistent worker. I think moving him to 34 OLB has put him in a position to excel. He seems to click as a guy that stands up on the outside when rushing. If you would have watched the games or followed the Chiefs closely last year, you’d know that he got held… a lot, and never got the penalty. Also, several opposing coaches last year said Tamba was a “force”. He may not break out, but he’ll continue to produce. As for team sacks… again, let’s wait and see what an all star, 3 time SB winning coach can do to elevate that. The schemes and game planning that the DC will offer this year will be heads and shoulders above what Clancy freaking Pendergast put together.

McCluster will be fine, don’t you worry about him. And yeah, it"s really a shame we passed on Kindle for McCluster. Nothing like drafting a LB that can’t properly navigate a flight of stairs. Come on man.

Haley will be fine. As a rookie HC, implementing a new culture and system, he had a tough job last year. He made some mistakes, but as you hear a lot around here, it was a “process”. DJ is a notorious under achiever, and has cost teh Chiefs more than one game due to his lack of effort or concentration. So it could be argued that benching him could have helped bring out the best in him when he was allowed into the game. Haley has a different demeanor this year… he’s not fighting with players, they’re supporting him. He brought in Weis to make his job easier. You can just see the difference. It’s like night and day. Last year was a crappy year. There had to be a deconstruction before we could start building, and we witnessed that. We’re now building, and it looks and feels like Haley is the in control foreman, not the laborer with a sledge hammer he was last year.

Thomas Jones was brought in more for his leadership abilities than for anything he has left in the tank. He was also signed on to help Jamaal Charles extend his career. Starting RB doesn’t have a lot of meaning to the Chiefs. We’re fielding two pretty damn good RBs this year, and they’re both going to get touches. Think what you want about rude awakenings, but if you could hear interviews with Jones that shows the mentality and type of person that he is, you wouldn’t doubt this guy for a second. His body is in peak physical condition, and he has a team first mentality. Because of that, Thomas Jones doesn’t expect (and won’t) carry the load for this team. He’s sharing that duty with Charles, and both backs are perfectly fine with it. Neither of them are the “ME” backs that are so prevailent through out the league.

Good post... Until I got to your POLL

Let me put on my caps-lock screaming goggles for a moment…

Ahem…

HOW IN THE NAME OF JESUS H. TEBOW ARE THE CHIEFS NOT ON THE LIST TO REPRESENT THE AFC??

Color me disappointed. (that color would be purple, by the way)

Otherwise, good post :)

You lost me at
I think McDaniels is a good coach…

For his ability to dismantle an offense that wasn’t broken? Please clarify.

Predictions:

1) Fans will feel just scads better from mid-to-end of the 2010 season.
2) During the 2021 season, Ryan Succop will become the Chiefs’ all-time leading scorer with 1469 points.

by Dove40 on Aug 9, 2010 11:53 PM CDT reply actions

McDaniels

I think he is good because he seemed to have a Belichick-like understanding of the game. He maximized his talents the first half of last year with a team that didn’t have much more skill than us. It may be a belief that is more about the future than anything he has yet to accomplish so far. I hope I’m dead wrong. Thanks for the comment.
