Ask The Falcoholic!

Chiefs fans, rejoice! Real, honest to goodness football is almost upon us.

For those of you who don't know me, I'm the editor-in-chief over at The Falcoholic, and I couldn't wait to get the discussion about our first pre-season game started. This has felt like the off-season from hell, frankly.

So I'm here to answer any questions you might have about the Atlanta Falcons. Want to know what we're expecting from Matt Ryan? What we think about Tony Gonzalez (don't ask me to curse him somehow). Want to know if our defense is good enough to stop Jamaal Charles? I'll do my best to answer whatever you throw my way.

Looking forward to hearing from you guys, and here's to a great game.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

way cool and rec'd ...

Dave, at some point later in the week, hit us back with your take (or the fans take) on “my main squeeze and homeslice” and the guy I really wanted KC to take in the first round: SPOON … I read where he might be lined up on different sides to keep the other team off balance, will that work? does he look as good in practice as people thought or hoped?

(of course, it’s way early to make much of an assessment, so a reality check is likely in order down the road)

Well, here's my sense with 'Spoon

They talk a good game about having him play outside on both sides, but he’s going to start for Mike Peterson. It’s kind of a no brainer, in my opinion.

Peterson’s old and totally ineffective against the run at this stage in his career, where Spoon is extremely athletic and should help out there immediately. On the other side, starter Stephen Nicholas is reasonably young and very well-rounded.

And he’s looked great in practice. Very capable, very fluid, very confident.

thank you, Dave ...

I hope he works out well for the Falcons, and I think he will, the guy has talent by the boatload, hard hitter and very sharp as well as a good leader out there on the field

so, think the Falcons might want to trade him to KC for a Safety named Page and a 6-Pack to be named later?

Whats the word on Turner?

Heard he lost some weight.. Was that the contributing factor to his decline last season?

And, was the lack of a run game the reason for Matt Ryan’s struggles?

The Chiefs will see a return to respectability in 2010, emerging as the front runner in the AFC West! ....And I'll quantify that however I choose. Ahem.

by ArrowSpread on Aug 7, 2010 10:34 AM CDT reply actions

He looks faster and sharper

I think it definitely didn’t help his leg injuries heal, and the coaching staff repeatedly threw him in when he wasn’t ready. Look at this numbers and you’ll see that when he was in, he was effective, but keeping him injury-free is a priority. The loss of weight should help.

Having to rely on the less effective Jason Snelling definitely hurt Matt Ryan. He forced way too many throws in 2009.

What do you realistically expect from this team?

It’s tough being in a division with the Super Bowl champs because with very little losses from that team it probably means your best chance at a playoff birth is from a wildcard spot. That having been said you’ll be battling teams like the Pack or Vikings and two of the Giants, Eagles and Cowboys.

Part two: Do you think your defense will hold up? The league, especially in the NFC, has really shifted to a passing league and you come in with plain awful pass defense. Do you think enough has been done to overcome that weakness in your defense?

Part three: What do you think of Matt Ryan’s trouble playing on the road and do you think it’s something that he can overcome this season? Ryan has put up great numbers at home but last year, other then the first road game, really struggled on the road. He is only a third year player so theres going to be mental barriers but it’s going to be hard for this team to challenge for the division again with those issues on the road.

Good luck to you and your team.

One at a time

1) I expect an NFC Wild Card berth. As a Falcons fan, I hate to even predict that high, but this is an undeniably talented team. I think they’ll give the Saints a run for their money.

2) Injuries will go a long way toward determining that. We have some excellent starters but not a lot of depth anywhere but the defensive line. I do expect our defense to be a pleasant surprise, and I think the last two drafts have been targeted at improving our strength there. One player to watch is cornerback Chris Owens, who I think will really come out swinging in 2010.

3) I think those issues will be a thing of the past this season. A lot of time has been spent focusing on getting him more comfortable in the pocket and ensuring he has some control over the flow of the game, which I think naturally translates into better pocket presence at home and on the road. I like his chances of busting out this year.

And good luck to yours!

I know that he has had lackluster stats the past few years...

But the Falcons did pick up Dunta Robinson in the offseason. How is he looking this offseason? Just the addition of Dunta should greatly help out the secondary. How does the rest of the Secondary look?

… and Welcome to Arrowhead Pride.

Go Chiefs!!!!

Well, as I said below

Robinson’s looked fine in practice, but now he’s hurt and may miss the game against you. Very tough to say how he’ll turn out for us.

The rest of the secondary has been very good thus far. Lot of youth and athleticism there.

Whats up Dave

Who is a relatively unknown Falcon that could emerge on the national scene this season?

What can you tell us about our new secondary coach, Emmitt Thomas?

Have you guys given up on Jamal Anderson?

If you could get a blue chip player right now to put you over the top what position would it be?

by I_Bleed_Red. on Aug 7, 2010 10:51 AM CDT reply actions

There's more than one.

Corner Chris Owens, I believe, will start opposite Dunta Robinson. He’s one to watch. Kroy Biermann piled up six sacks in limited playing time last year, and I have no reason to believe he’ll come in under that. Harry Douglas is poised to break out at receiver after missing all of last year—he’s very, very fast.

Emmitt Thomas is great with the players, but he’s really only a good secondary coach if there’s assembled talent. He does well at maximizing the coverage skills of guys, but if they’re not there to begin with…like in Atlanta…then he’s merely okay.

Jamaal Anderson is actually going to get significant snaps at defensive tackle and left defensive end. I’d like for us to give up on him, but the coaching staff sees something I don’t.

Definitely wide receiver. Michael Jenkins is known for his blocking, but a lot of advanced metrics show he’s not even very good at that. He’s at best a decent #2, and having a terrific player there opposite Roddy White and complementing Tony Gonzalez would be HUGE.

He's looking good in limited time

He’s hurt now, though, and you may not see him for our game. Very hard to say if he’s worth the price. I will say I’m leery of throwing wads of cash on a guy who looks to be declining, but maybe a change of scenery is actually going to help him.

In other words, I have no idea!

has a history of being injury prone, how’s he look and what’s the backup look like if he goes down again?

by dubld on Aug 7, 2010 11:02 AM CDT reply actions

If he goes down

Expect to see Chris Owens, Brent Grimes, and Brian Williams getting the bulk of the playing time.

Owens, as I’ve mentioned, looks to me like a very capable starting cornerback. Grimes is prone to mental lapses but is an absolute ballhawk. He had six picks last season and has what looks to me like a 10 foot vertical.

Williams is old and kinda crappy, but the coaching staff loves him. I’m crossing my fingers that he’ll sort of fade down the depth chart, but I’m not counting on it.

If we wanted Tony G. back

which one of our players would we have to give you in a trade? Do you expect this to be TG’s last year?

We have this player on our team Dwayne Bowe who has kind of a big mouth, which player on your team do you wish would play more and talk less?

Left Tackle is Brandon Albert's natural position.

by Idahochief on Aug 7, 2010 11:24 AM CDT reply actions

We'd gladly take Jamaal Charles

Realistically at this point, I think the Falcons would rather take on picks than players. I suppose Glenn Dorsey’s still a possibility, but the team has really shored up their defensive tackle. I’ll have to think about this one more.

It’s probably going to be Sean Weatherspoon. The dude is freakishly talented, but he just never stops talking. Ever. Not for a second. If you want a laugh sometime, look him up on Twitter.

Tony’s the kind of guy that I truly believe will walk away when his body’s not up to it…unlike a certain “aw shucks!” quarterback we all know. The way he keeps himself in shape, I could see him hanging on for another season, with the Falcons or someone else (you guys?)

I doubt our GM would take him back.

Pioli has shown a definite preference for mediocre and out right sucky TE’s. He will burn a draft pick almost every year on a hopeless project. However I must admit it he appears to have picked one this year that is showing some promise.

Left Tackle is Brandon Albert's natural position.

2. What matchup problems do you see for either the Chiefs or Falcons as they face each other?

I think it is

You guys needed picks to generate young talent, and we needed a stabilizing tight end to help nurture Matt Ryan along. I’d say it worked out pretty well.

Correct me if I’m dumb, but I’m not aware that your secondary has improved by leaps and bounds. I’d expect Matt Ryan to have some fun exploiting weaknesses back there, though I’m interested to see what Eric Berry can do against us. Your offense ought to be able to take advantage of the fact that we’re still introducing players in the middle. Charles should have a nice day.

Secondary has quickly become a strength of this team.

Other then one question mark(that may be easily answered)at a safety spot I’d even go so far as to say we have a top 5-7 secondary as far as talent and potential in the league.

The secondary is great

The only way Falcons can expect to exploit it is if the pass rush proves to be as anemic as it was last year.

Since you mentioned advanced football statistics above, consider this:

According to profootballfocus, Kansas City has the 4th or 5th best CB tandem in the league

hmm… Profootballfocus seems to be down for the weekend… you can verify my stats on on Monday. Throw in Berry and KC is looking at one of the top secondaries in the NFL this season.

I've been rapping for about seveteen years okay? I don't write my stuff anymore I just kick it from my head you know what I'm sayin? I can do that. No disrespect but that's how I am.

by soybon on Aug 7, 2010 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Secondary should be very strong.

IMO the seconday is tied for the best part of the chiefs(with running backs of course). Most people think Brandon Flowers will be a pro-bowl caliber corner this year. Brandon Carr is a very solid number 2 corner, probably one of the better #2’s in the league. We expect HUGE things from Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis is coming in as a fifth round pick and is showing skills much earlier than most expected. This year I expect to have a top 12 d-backfield. But going on our entirely young secondary should only progress with experience and within the next 3-5 years I expect to see the best or one of the best secondaries in the league.

by masonsixer on Aug 7, 2010 10:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I think potentially a top ten secondary this year

one guy going to pro bowl this year(flowers) and another potential pro bowler in berry.

by flavian79 on Aug 8, 2010 1:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Flowers is in the wrong conference

Id be surprised if he sees a pro bowl, even if he deserves it until Bailey retires or we start being a playoff factor again. Have to think that every year Nnamdi, Revis, Bailey will always be the first choices whether they deserve it or not.

My 2nd favorite team!

1) Outside of RB injuries, would you say that Turner’s, and the RBs in general, regression from 2008 had anything to do with the O-line? Bad play, injuries, coaching, etc, along the O-line last season?

2) Where did Roddy and Tony G. rank in targets last season and do you see that changing, for the better or worse, this season?

One at a time, Part Two

1) Honestly, the o-line suffered some injuries last year. We had issues with Sam Baker, Harvey Dahl and Tyson Clabo, so almost 3/5ths of our starting line was down at some point this season. Add that into our offensive coordinator’s tendency to run entirely predictable running plays, and injuries to Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood, and you’ve got a recipe for problems. We, uh…we had some problems.

2) 1 and 2. I can’t see that changing. Harry Douglas and maybe even rookie Kerry Meier will start to bite in to those totals, but Michael Turner’s not a pass-catching threat and White and Gonzo are two of the best in the NFL at their respective positions. They’ll continue to dominate the catches.

speaking of vick

can you give us a little background on what that was like for your franchise, and the aftermath? did it make rebuilding tough?

by flavian79 on Aug 8, 2010 1:41 AM CDT up reply actions

We were extraordinarly fortunate

2007 was the worst season I’ve ever experienced as a Falcons fan. Just a miserable, miserable experience. Going into 2008, I cautioned my readers about setting expectations too high for our rookie GM, rookie coach, rookie QB and host of other rookies. It looked like a long, winding rebuilding process.

But every now and then, you order a tuna sandwich and the restaurant mistakenly brings you caviar. Thomas Dimitroff has proven to be a very intelligent, capable GM, Mike Smith is a great motivator and Matt Ryan has been better than good for his two years. Add in some smart moves in free agency and three good drafts back-to-back, and we’ve vaulted ourselves into the playoff conversation immediately.

I’m extremely proud and grateful for that. Most teams aren’t so fortunate, and up to this point in our 44 year history, we hadn’t been either.

Hoo boy.

Many of us miss having the most exciting player in the league, the city’s most popular athlete, and the face of the NFL. We certainly don’t miss having a constant distraction, a terrible role model, and an embarrassment for the state and franchise.

So it’s hard to say. We’re very happy with our current quarterback.

What are your thoughts on Kerry Meier? I.e. how has he looked so far, could he make an eventually impact, etc.?

Additionally, thanks! This is a very cool thread.

by MtHammer on Aug 8, 2010 10:35 PM CDT reply actions

It's starting to look like he'll make an immediate impact

Our #2 receiver, Michael Jenkins, is out 4-6 weeks with a shoulder injury. Meier has been lights out in camp thus far, catching everything thrown to him and looking very sharp in running routes. He doesn’t have top-end speed, so crisp routes are critical for him.

I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t get a few snaps opposite Roddy White early on.

3 Things (2 questions, 1 comment). 1 - How do you see the NFC South ending up this year?

Here’s my take as an outsider. I honestly don’t expect to see the Saints win the NFC South this year. The division has been up and down since it was formed and I think it’s a difficult chore for a Super Bowl champ to keep up the intensity. Plus I toss in the Saints tendency to fade at the end of the season in years past, I just don’t think they’ll repeat. If they do, I’ll credit it to Brees’ leadership.

I think the Panthers are going to be more consistent this year, and while I think losing Peppers and Delhomme might be addition by subtraction (both the epitome of inconsistency), I think they’ll hover around the .500 mark.

I’m still not sold on the Bucs organization. I expect them to be better, but I would be surprised to see them win more than 6.

I’m assuming Turner and Ryan will have big years again and Atlanta takes it this year, followed by the Saints, Panthers and Bucs.

2 – I want to say congratulations on what I think has been the biggest turnaround in NFL history. After the Vick episode and Petrino’s resignation the Falcon organization was given up for dead by most of the media and NFL fans in general. The expectation of most analysts seemed to be that they would be like an expansion team without the extra draft picks. But they came out and put out a really competitive team and were instantly back in it. Your front office – Blank, McKay, and Dimitroff – deserve a ton of credit. I have a LOT of respect for the Falcon’s organization.

3 – What are your thoughts on the AFC West?

Here's how I envision it shaking out

1) Saints
2) Falcons (Wild Card)
3) Bucs
4) Panthers

This division is just tough as hell. You could make a reasonable argument for the Panthers or Bucs moving up further than that, but I expect Josh Freeman with some weapons will push the Bucs up past the rebuilding Panthers. Neither team will contend for the playoffs this year.

Thanks for the kind words. If I had to predict how the AFC West would shake out, it’d go something like this:

1) Chargers
2) Chiefs
3) Broncos
4) Raiders

The Chargers are, on paper at least, still very good. Ryan Matthews is going to be a stud in the NFL. The Chiefs and Broncos I could see going either way…I think Josh McDaniels might be running the Broncos into the ground in some ways, and you’re a team on the rise. Not sure it’ll be this year that you really make a run, but it’s a good start.

And hell, the Raiders are the Raiders. They’ll be better this year, but not contenders.

I can't disagree with your picks

I think KC and Oakland could both surprised a lot of teams, I think Campbell could really make a huge impact. I agree with you about the Broncos. McDaniels is either a genius or nuts, only time will tell. Rivers is the only real proven QB in the AFC West and that could make the difference, but I think everyone else is catching them fast and they won’t be able to feast on the rest of the division much longer.

Thanks for your comments!

Was fun to see Gonzo play his old KC team mates.

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
