A Jarrad Page Intervention
Hey Jarrad, come on in. Have a seat. We've been waiting for you for a while, buddy. Would you like a glass of water or something? No? How about an orange soda? Are you too warm or anything?
I'm making you nervous? It's ok. You're safe here, Jarrad. You're among people who love you, and who really want to help you out right now. Listen, we'd like to talk to you about your behavior lately...
No, no, no! Don't leave! C'mon Jarrad, sit down on this comfy chair pal. There we go. Atta boy. I promise you, like I said, this is a safe place. We're all family here.
Where's your brother, you ask? Well, Jarrad, he's not here with us today. See, we wanted to talk to you without him here. Because, well, he's part of the problem. A big part, actually.
Listen Jarrad, we all came here today because we love you and want you to hear the truth. We're just tired of watching you hurt yourself over and over like this. It's becoming painful to watch. We want to help.
Here it is, Jarrad. You're a 5th year safety who's just entering his prime. That's so great! Good for you! But here's the problem, Jarrad. You're coming off a terrible, terrible year. Wait, don't get up! We're not saying it's your fault Jarrad! It's nobodies fault, really (sideways smile at others in attendance). Oh, we don't need to talk about HIM right now. Yes, Jarrad, he's mad. Really mad. In fact, the last time I saw him like this was when Brodie didn't snap the... Well, that's neither here nor there.
Anyways, let's forget about him. Let's get back to you. This is about you, Jarrad. Eric's here, see? He's got a short letter for you...
(Eric stands nervously, pulls a small piece of paper out of his pocket and reads)
"Jarrad, when I was first drafted you made it seem like you were really excited. That made me very happy. I was so pumped to team up with you and try to turn this around, and you said you were too. Now it's like you're a different person, and you're trying to act like you never... you never..."
(Eric tears up and sits down, shaking his head. Kendrick gives him a pat on the back and tells him it'll be ok)
See, Jarrad, sometimes what you do hurts others too. Eric feels like you lied to him. In fact, we all feel like that. We feel like you're trying to find someone to blame, Jarrad. But did you ever think that maybe that man might be the guy you see in the mirror every day?
Let me tell you something, Jarrad. Like I said before, you're coming off a bad year. Your worst by far. We've all been so excited watching you grow up! After that 2008 season, we all thought you might be a great big Pro Bowler! One of our very own! But see, things change pretty fast if you don't pay attention, Jarrad.
You got hurt. We understand that, don't we? (everyone nodding)
But that's not the problem. We still loved you. In fact, you got offered even more money than you made last year! After making 19 tackles in 5 games and then having to go on IR, a lot of people might have given up on you Jarrad. But not us... Jarrad... Not us. We offered you another $1.7 million dollars!
And now it's come to this. This hurts us more than it hurts you Jarrad, but that brother of yours is bad news. He's lying to you Jarrad. I know this is hard to hear, but you're not a big shot, Jarrad. You're not that big a deal. And no one is going to be able to stand by you if you keep acting this way.
Now, Mike and Brian are standing there by the door. They're all ready to give you a ride to camp. They even promised that they'd stop for a cream soda on the way! All you have to do is show up, Jarrad. Wouldn't it be nice? And think, if you play hard for us, then you can earn all that money that you want to make!
If not that, then can we at least ask you to stop embarrassing us (and yourself) in public? We'll do what we can about letting you go somewhere else if you can just do that. I'll go talk to The Don. He's a reasonable man, Jarrad. But he needs to know that you're reasonable too. Otherwise, there's nothing we can do for you. I'm afraid, Jarrad. Afraid of what he might do...
Well, that's all Jarrad. We, your friends, just wanted you to hear the truth. Now you can do with it what you want. The only person who can really help you now Jarrad is... you.
(Room starts to clear out. A few people stop to give Jarrad a hug. Kendrick isn't one of them)
*****I figured I'd add this disclaimer to avoid a lot of hassle. I'm just having fun with a crappy situation. I have no idea if Page is telling the whole truth or not. I doubt it, and I have my reasons (like Waters not retiring and Vrabel resigning, for starters), but this is for ENTERTAINMENT! :)

Could easily replace Pioli with Jarrad...
My connection with league sources says there is a lot of legitimacy to Page’s claims and that union attorneys are digging into it. It makes sense, the injury came early in the year when Haley was trying to be a hard ass and make a name for himself. Could easily see him trying to shame a player into playing through an injury.
In front of Waters and Vrabel?
Both union reps? And guys who have NO reason to fear Haley or Pioli?
The story John is selling is that this was done in front of the other players, right?
Yet Vrabel resigned. Waters didn’t retire. And neither took anything to the union. Neither need the money, HIV. Why did two of the most respected players in the game stick with a team if that kind of stuff was going on right out in public?
Or are they in on it too?
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Is that the way that Pioli does things?
Have players get into public disputes with what basically amounts to gossip?
Again, you didn’t answer my question…
If Haley did something THAT out of line, why would those guys stick around and show up for OTA’s and be perfect soldiers (way better than last year)?
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Have we seen them get the NFLPA involved?
If something was going on that was endangering a player, they would have gotten someone in here to investigate.

My understanding of being a union rep...
Is that it is mandatory that they report infractions as they occur. Or am I wrong about this?
If they are supposed to report infractions why haven’t we heard about this? There is way to much stuff not adding up.
Go Chiefs!!!!
You are correct
Old guys rule...yeah you might have youth and talent on your side...but I have time and treachery...
Exactly.

Thanks... I thought that this was the case.
The only thing that I can think of was that Vrable and Waters were not there while these acts of “Vindication” occured over a period of 5-6 months. Which seems pretty damn near impossible for both of them to miss.
Go Chiefs!!!!
Nobody wanted Vrabels old ass
did you see him play last year?

Maybe chicks...
But I doubt it. Besides, did he even try to contact other teams? He could’ve retired as well, right?
Vrabel doesn’t strike me as a guy SO desperate that he’d play for a coach that violated league rules like that, is all I’m saying.
You may not like him and he’s past his prime, but he’s a pro and VERY respected and it don’t think he would’ve had a problem finding a team that wanted him to groom young players (sounds oddly dirty putting it that way, but you know what I mean).
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
I saw him catch a ball for a TD last year
How many TD’s have you made in your football career?…wait….

That makes him not slow somehow?

Did you?
When Vrable was healthy he played solid. You seem very negaitve in general about all the Chiefs players.
The Chiefs have been one of the worst teams in the league for 3 seasons....

It's funny that you judge a franchise
on 3 seasons. Good job! claps You should write a book over the Chiefs! It would top the best sellers list!
It could be titled:
Judging a team by 3 season’s played: Everything else irrelevent
or
A team that struggles for 3 or 4 seasons can never get better
or
I talk negative about a team that I “Love” just to get attention
Thos all would work :)
Jamaal Charles...Enough said.
Wow i can feel the love flowing in here.
She does pretty much always, well maybe i should just say always have negative comment towards the Chiefs, but it just her opinion and most of the time, like it or not it’s true.

Stop taking everything so seriously :)

My connections with league sources seem to think you're full of crap
What are the union attorney’s looking into again? Whether he played hurt or not? Player’s are always playing hurt. That the coach called him out in front of his teammates? That happens every game in every locker room too. Page was probably just missing Herm stroking his “ego” for him before games.
Flowers played hurt last year
And Waters did too. And Charles. And Williams
Funny that the only guy that’s saying stuff like this is the one guy that’s trying to get out of town…
Coincidence? I kind of doubt it…
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Your connections with league sources, lol.
How would anyone with league sources have anything to do with a guy who’s ID is HIV 2 Elway or even take seriously for that matter.
My league sources say your full of shit.

The Chiefs will see a return to respectability in 2010, emerging as the front runner in the AFC West! ....And I'll quantify that however I choose. Ahem.

Compare
“Like I said,” John Page continued, “it wasn’t just one incident. It was something that began in the preseason and continued all year culminating in the player ending the season on IR. He was put out there to practice at times when he should have been resting”
So as we can see from the Haynesworth/Redskins situation, it’s pretty clear that NO player can be “put out there to pracice” if they don’t want to. The only “threats” that could be made by any coach to a player is that if they are too hurt to practice, then they probably won’t play, and may lose their starting job. The only leg a coach would have to stand on is the team doctor’s stating that the player could play, but it’s on the player to determine if they feel they can. If a doctor was stating that Page couldn’t play, which can definitely be proven from documentation, and Haley continued to push, then like the Minnesota Chiefs fan has stated, player reps would have been ALL OVER that.
All in all, it just doesn’t add up for Page and what his agent/brother are saying; if he wants to feel “intimidated” b/c his position wouldn’t be held if he wanted to sit out and rest b/c of an injury that the team, including the doctors, felt he could have played through and he chose not to, then so be it.

Just trying to put a little humor into what’s shaping up to be a very stupid little mess…
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
The humor is there, but I don't think there will be a mess.
Unlike the Pollard release last year, there is a player waiting in the wings that is, at a minimum, Page’s equivalent if not an outright superior.
Good point
I meant more from a PR perspective.

One thought...ok maybe rant
If Page had issue with being “abused” “intimidated” or “threatened” his union reps were in the room with him, right there when this all supposedly happened. Why did he not call them out for not standing up for his rights under the collective bargaining agreement? Further, Waters is a VERY respected member of the NFLPA, and if he had asked the leauge to look into mis-conduct, I am willing to bet my last few bucks the leauge would have been investigating it on the spot.
This story stinks from top to bottom. I seriously doubt that Haley, or the chiefs did anything wrong. I have some real doubts about Page’s validity at this point, this all happened a YEAR ago and is just now coming to light? C’mon, that dog don’t hunt. I’m not calling Mr Page a liar, yet, but he and his agent are putting out a story that just isnt believeable.
Old guys rule...yeah you might have youth and talent on your side...but I have time and treachery...
There you go
There’s some odd points to this story, like you say.
Add to that the fact that Vrabel and Waters stuck around this season (as I’ve said numerous times). Would they have stuck with a team where a coach was abusive? No. Would they have stuck around with a coach that’s hard on his players? Yes.
This is a he said/they said story, and all the visible evidence goes against Page’s story (or his brother’s story).
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Yeah
This sounds more and more like someone trying to create leverage where none is to be had. Page looks like an idiot right now, and his brother is not helping his cause at all.
Old guys rule...yeah you might have youth and talent on your side...but I have time and treachery...
Amen brother
I was originally going to do a serious post about all the holes in this story, but I thought I’d go for something a little more light hearted, since it seems like everyone’s a little tense right now :)
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Also why would Page want to continue to play in the NFL
If the NFLPA union reps aren’t reporting your grievances that occurred.
Go Chiefs!!!!
thanks fanatic

I made this as a JOKE.
I’m not taking sides, because I think it’s in the best interest of both parties to get a deal done, but Page is screwing himself over more than he’s screwing the Chiefs…

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Consider this as well
Page’s agent/brother hints that one specific injury was mishandled through the season, however, as we look back over the season:
Page suffered from an ailing shoulder at the beginning of the season, or so the injury report states. On week 6 and week 7, Page was made inactive along with several other players from missing time in practice. Hard to say a player was “intimidated” to play when he’s made inactive b/c of injury. This seems like it was the beginning of the coaches realizing they were going to have to go in a different direction with who they started in Page’s spot.
And finally in week 9, he was placed on the IR with a “badly pulled calf”
Where exactly is the “mishandling of an injury” and the “intimidation” for him to play?

Ya...I am going to call BS on this one.
Here is why…
1) I think that Coach told the players in no uncertain terms that if they do not practice during the week they will not be playing on Sunday. (The real “Intimidation Tactic” being described by the Page brothers)Here is why…
1) I think that Coach told the players in no uncertain terms that if they do not practice during the week they will not be playing on Sunday. (The real “Intimidation Tactic” being described by the Page brothers)
2) I think that Coach actually followed through with his “Intimidation Tactic”.
3) I think that Page realized that with the Chiefs drafting Eric and Kendrick that he would have 0 and I mean ZERO tolerance for mistakes, weakness, and/or laziness.
1+2+3=Page scared to even ‘try’ to play this season for fear that what little ‘leverage’ he has to get a new contract from the Chiefs (or any other team for that matter) will fly out the window once everyone can see what REAL safeties like Berry / Lewis look like.
The only reason Page EVER looked good was because our team was just THAT bad. I submit that he (Page) looked his best when our team was at their worst (2-14 IS our worst).
Page & Page understand that if Jarrad was to practice/play this season EVERYONE (both Chiefs and every other team in the NFL) will see him for what he really is…A 7th round draft pick that played serviceably for 2-14 team, but would look like crap on a ‘real’ team.
Now I am all for him getting the best deal possible for himself…I just wish he didn’t feel the need to toss his coach/team under the bus to get that deal! (A.K.A – While trying to look out for number one, I think he and his brother are stepping in the number two).

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Agree up
I was one that thought this would be worked out, but now see that it cannot be. How could Page come back now after saying he felt intimidated by the HC? Impossible. What might happen is that the Chiefs will put together their evidence that none of this ever happened and float it in the media, removing any credibility that Page has at all. This could be very damaging for Page’s career. If he is proven to be a spin artist, how many teams will want to take a chance on having him in their locker room? It is probably what needs to happen to give example to the players that if you want to fight the ‘program’ you better have grounds. Otherwise, shutup, do your work and wait for an opportunity to go elsewhere. He did sign a contract afterall and took the Hunt’s money when he did. Don’t forget, he refused a couple million to potentially ride the bench this year and then move on in 2011. Hindsite is 20/20 after all.

No, I really can't
He’s done here. He can’t come back no matter what, because it would make him look like a liar (which he already does to a certain extent).
The team can’t let him back because they can’t really trust him and/or he has something on them that may cause problems.
Whether he’s telling the truth or not, he’s done.

I think Page is pretty mcuh toast
with the Chiefs. I don’t see any possible way for it to reasonably happen that he would return to the team.
"The Hammer"
It's been obvious for a long time.
Page is not one of the “right 53.” Maybe he and Albert Haynesworth and TO can form a support group for the underappreciated…Oh, wait, that won’t work—though they are lacking in character, Haynesworth and Owens actually have proven talent.
