NFL Roster Cuts: Kansas City Chiefs Release WR Lance Long

The Kansas City Chiefs got down to 75 players on Tuesday by releasing WR Lance Long.

Long, 25, came to the Chiefs on Sept. 16, 2009 and was placed on the practice squad before being activated in week seven.

Expectations for Long in Kansas City were slightly inflated when, in his second game as a Chief, he caught eight passes for 75 yards. He didn't have another game in the 2009 regular season or the 2010 preseason where he caught more than two passes in a game.

Long had two receptions for 12 yards in the second preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He snagged a 39-yard pass against the Philadelphia Eagles in the third preseason game.

Long was originally brought to Kansas City because of his familiarity with Todd Haley while with the Arizona Cardinals in 2008.

The Chiefs are now down to 75 players before the 3:00 p.m. (CDT) deadline.

Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.

yep

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

Horne looked fine covering punts last week

Politics aside, Obama would of better been served, buying 5 "new" football teams.

Somebody please explain

What is so exciting about Lawrence? He must play well in practice, because everytime they use him on offense or ST I have to hold my breath. He doesn’t do squat when he gets the ball, and at 6’0" and 185, he looks puny. DMac at 5’8" and 170 is stouter than him. Everyone is worried about DMac, but he’s sold and lower to the ground. Lawrence looks like a rag doll when he gets hit. Think about it.

by David Winton on Aug 31, 2010 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions

well...

he does have good speed, and the coaches must see some potential there

he is also doing a good job gunning on Kickoff/punt coverage units

but, yeah, he hasn’t shown much yet

Who shall we keep at WR? Can't say I didnt see this coming. I just expected more out of him.

D.Bowe, Chambers, Urban, Horne, Lawrence, and McCluster?

Copper... Special teams Standout will save him.

I agree

Even leaving out his tackling, which is exceptional on ST. He seems like he’s always giving a great lead block for our returners (at least this preseason).

I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

by MNchiefsfan on Aug 31, 2010 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions

I will be suprised if Copper gets cut.

It is almost more important that the #5 and #6 receivers are stellar special teams players.

by saskwatch on Aug 31, 2010 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

agree

this time last year I was calling for his head…because he’s garbage as a WR, but he’s impressed me on ST enough I would think he can keep his job for another year…It’s not like we have a plethora of talent at the WR position anyway…afterall we just cut the next Welker.

I'd rather have Long

over Lawrence. Lawrence didn’t show anything last year receiving or returning kicks. Long at least cause more than one pass. Oh well, if either were playing as receiver we’d be screwed anyways so who cares.

One less mediocre player on our team

Progress, seeing as how last year he was “good enough” (or to be more honest, we were bad enough) to see significant playing time.

So much for that, lol.

I Don't Know How Anyone Can Get Excited About A Guy Who Couldn't Get On The Field In Arizona

And who averaged less than ten yards per reception in his best game here and who couldn’t even average eight yards per reception in college. He was just another in a long line of scraps Haley and Pioli poached from their former teams who simply weren’t very good pro football players.

by UCrawford on Aug 31, 2010 11:25 AM CDT up reply actions

There wasn't much of anything to get excited about in 2009, so I think fans can be forgiven a bit for reaching...

And in the limited game film that was available, Long looked like a quick, shifty receiver who might develop into something.

But I do agree, it’s a big stretch to have high hopes for a guy who really couldn’t do anything at a middle of the road college.

Predictions:
This year will be better

by jmcgoblue on Aug 31, 2010 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Not much available last year anyway

And Haley did get a guy that was hungry, and had a good work ethic in the locker room (which he already knew). Lance served a purpose.

by danbre123 on Aug 31, 2010 11:52 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Well I could see somewhat where people were coming from

Between Boldin, Fitzgerald, and Breaston, Arizona wasn’t exactly hurting at WR. But when people were enamored with him “watching the ball” over production, I had to become skeptical.

Wish the kid luck, though.

its not a "homer" thing

It’s more about the ‘long-shot’ who fights his way on the roster.

He does have some ability and a ton of heart, makes it hard not to root for him

by stagdsp on Aug 31, 2010 10:46 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Come now..

we both know he has zero ability. He didn’t in college, he didn’t in the NFL, he won’t in the UFL….hell he probably sucked in high school.

Chiefs Might

by chicks_love_chiefs on Aug 31, 2010 10:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, He Was Terrible

His best year in college he got 177 yards on 25 receptions. Big flipping deal.

I’d rather have had Jeff Webb or Devard Darling holding down a roster spot last year than Lance Long.

by UCrawford on Aug 31, 2010 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I would say considering our roster last season...

and with the additions of Urban, McCluster, and possibly Horne, Long doesn’t look as enticing as he did last season on this team. Seeing the positives in a player like Long isn’t hard with our 2009 roster. It is with our 2010 roster.

by stagdsp on Aug 31, 2010 10:56 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Absolutely a good point

People got overexcited because of how bad our receivers were. Then he comes in and has 10 catches his first 2 games. People start grasping, looking for anything positive… and in comes the hyperbole.

So you're saying our roster will be circumcised?

We’re going to cut the Cox…

Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.

by TRSChief on Aug 31, 2010 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Probably So

They ran Lokey at FB…and Cox’s big sticking point was that he was one of Chan Gailey’s guys. Gailey’s gone and so is the offense he ran, and I don’t seem to recall Charlie Weis or Todd Haley making fullback much of a role in their previous offenses. If it’s just an every-once-in-awhile role, why bother keeping a FB in a roster spot?

Moderator - Arrowhead Pride

by UCrawford on Aug 31, 2010 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions

So it's safe to say Cox will probably land in Buffalo?

I’ve always thought Cox was a pretty decent FB, I know we have Castille now (and Lokey) but in my eyes Cox is a better overall football player than him.

Predictions:
This year will be better

by jmcgoblue on Aug 31, 2010 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions

He Might End Up There

I think it’s less a matter of Cox being not good and more a matter of a full-time fullback not being very important for this team. Kind of like what happens in Indianapolis…the Colts used Joe Klecko’s kid (a defensive lineman) as a FB for several years rather than burn a roster spot on a FB.

They look like they’re going to be a ground-based team this year…their QB situation is shaky at best.

by KCinIL on Aug 31, 2010 11:08 AM CDT reply actions

Urban Isn't Great

But he’s decent enough depth…he’s averaged respectable yardage for his career in the opportunities he’s been given. He didn’t have a good year last year, but all of the Arizona WRs dropped off because Warner had trouble throwing downfield after his surgery.

Work Smarter Not Harder

I’m assuming he spent half that time re-watching Derrick Thomas pressure and sack the quarterback and wondering when he was going to get another HOF level player to elevate his schemes.

I said this was imminent after the McCluster pick.

No room for a guy as terrible as Lance Long in the NFL.

Cutting guys who are awful is really, really exciting for me. It shows we’re better than a team that has Lance Long on their roster.

And for those rooting for him, not making the 75 manroster means he wasn’t even close to deserving a spot.

by WURoyal on Aug 31, 2010 1:59 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

you guys can't be serious about lokey

as a FB. Sometimes teams will put in a huge guy as a lead blocker in goal to go situations. He’s not actually being looked at as a FB. I refer to the “position” as superback.
