Kansas City Chiefs Are NFL's Second Best Rushing Team In 2010 Preseason
Well, the Kansas City Chiefs are doing something right.
They're three yards from the NFL's rushing leader in the 2010 preseason through three games.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are the NFL's number one team rushing the ball with 151 yards per game. The Chiefs are close behind with 150 rushing yards per game.
This supports Todd Haley's prediction that the Chiefs will be a running team in 2010. They basically already were in 2009 ending 11th in rushing yards and 25th in passing yards.
Jackie Battle currently leads all Chiefs rushers with 113 yards on 25 carries. Battle leap-frogged Javarris Williams on the latest depth chart and has turned in two consecutive solid performances in the preseason.
Jamaal Charles isn't far behind with 103 yards on 15 carries.
I also find it interesting that Dexter McCluster is fourth in carries right now. The feeling coming into camp was that McCluster would be primarily a receiver but he's gotten the ball at running back more often and done more damage there.
I'll find some stats to back this up but I think there are probably favorable W/L records for teams that rush the ball well.

Pittsburgh looked like crap last night
Which really ruined my day because I hate seeing the Donks win.

I was shocked to see that.
Not as shocked as I was when I see that Archie and the Gang welcomed an openly gay character…but shocked noneless.
The NFL has obviously turned into a passing league but with Cassel’s well documented struggles with throwing the ball down the field, having 8 or 9 guys in the box to attempt to stop the run can only help him.

gonna go out on a lmb and predict that Dex makes the team ...

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
interesting prediction
:)
I am surprised he’s getting so many carries and so few 3rd down catches…
but, that could change when the full playbook is unleashed on the regular season
this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?
He REALLY looks good carrying the ball.
A Darren Sproles type threat. But I agree, I’d like to see him catching more balls accross the middle.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery. Today is a gift, that's why it's called the present...
he sure does
really exciting to have home run threats in Charles, McCluster, Arenas and Berry

no doubt he'll get 3rd down catches in time ... he and Dex both

Getting comfortable running in the NFL,
giving him at least one skill he’s pretty confident with and can feel good about in a heated game. Probably a shorter path than polishing his receiving skills, which’ll come later. Just my feeling.
The path to Victory is made of losers.
Just a slight chance:P

Dude, no way! It'll never happen!
Obviously he gets cut and we call up Bobby Wade.
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
Speaking of....
We are currently ranked 6th in yards per game and 5th in passing yards per game on the defensive side of the ball. The biggest thing I am seeing that impresses me is we are 15th in the league giving up 20 pts per game, but how many pts have come off of turnovers?
If we can learn to take care of the football we may be able to see our defense crack the top ten.

great point

Especially when our 1st teamers have been the big culprits
It’s not just backups and scrubs losing the rock but Charles, Jones, Cassel…
You keep using that word.
I do not think it means what you think it means.

Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
I don't belive that our turnovers are really reflective of what our they will be. Hopefully,
Jones and McCluster have gotten those fumbles out of their system and the interceptions were mostly in backup and throw away situations. I hope. I like the teams disclipine and they really seem to be together……a real team, not a bunch of individuals. Charles interview today was great for anyone that has not seen it.
I just looked at the Chief's site and it's not there? I don't know why? Maybe Charles said
something wrong? Puzzling?

The NFL is a pass-first league right now, to be sure
However, our running game isn’t a classic “power-running” game, where you carry the ball for 4 yards and a cloud of dust 40 times a game.
Our running game has two home run hitters that are also dangerous out of the backfield. We aren’t looking to pound defenses (except maybe late with Jones/Battle), we’re looking to run past them with sweeps and tosses and counters. We’re a far cry from the Jets, and we’re not really looking to control the ball and count on the D. We run to score the same way the Colts pass to score.
I think an offense can be based around our type of running game and still put up serious points.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

I really like Battle
I always have…from the get-go I thought of him as a well-behaved LJ. He can be considered a home run threat in a way – if he gets a good hole on an inside run and the safety is out of position he could bust a 50 yard TD run as easily as LJ did a few times. Actually, I think Battle has better top speed than LJ, so that threat only increases.
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
It's hard not to love what we have at RB
With the mix of talent types and the unusual skill set of Dex/JC, I think we can realistically look at our RB group as one of the best in the business.
Of course, Dex isn’t technically a RB, but I’ve given up on trying to peg his position. Offensive Weapon it is!
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Completely agree. There are only so many offensive plays in a game and I believe that
if a team does something “really well”, it will set up the other aspects of their offense. Non-effective plays are what really hurts a team. I like the potential of the Chief’s offense and Haley, again today, made refference to not really gameplanning yet. Haley and Weiss will have a fantastic “gameplan” for September 13th.

Yet if the offense performs (not a bunch of 3 and outs)
The play count does go up
Example based on no stats
Poor offense 40 plays
Good offense 65 plays
and more Time of Posession

They just want to get McCluster the ball
I don’t think it’s about where they’re going to use him, they just want to get him the ball. See how reacts to the speed of the game and the other players. Let him get hit a couple times. They obviously believe he has a ton of talent and won’t make him play just one position. They want to spread that talent out. It wouldn’t suprise me at all to see JC in the slot and McCluster in the backfield.
Maybe the league is becoming more pass oriented...
But I’m not buying it just yet. Teams that run the ball and play defense tend to not only make the playoffs, but usually go deep into them. A couple of years of passing teams running the table isn’t enough for me to buy into this new philosophy just yet. Good defense and a strong rushing attack is tried and true. Not downplaying the qb and wrs, but use the run, to open the pass, stop other team from scoring has equalled way more championships than score a shit load on them, and screw defense/running

Actaully rushing teams don't do well. Greg Easterbrook has talked about this last year and now this year. Winning teams pass the ball well. That's why I don't like having Cassel at QB.

Pass Vs. Run
I would agree that a good running team can do well if you have a top 5 defense. The Ravens had that for years. The Jets showed it last year but they also struggled in the regular season. One thing a passing team can do that a good running team seems to struggle with is make up for a bad defensive team.
