Phootball Filosophy: The Ancients

We've had a lot of discussions lately over just how good (or bad) the Kansas City Chiefs are going to be this year, some of them fairly heated, none of them truly answering some of the most fundamental issues that we truly want to know.  We all have questions, some of them major concerns and some minor, but all of those questions that arise from various members of the Arrowhead Pride Fandom beg answers.

For example:  Is Matt Cassel really as good/bad as he seems?   Can Eric Berry actually fly?  If Tyler Palko throws a football and there's nobody there to catch it, does it make a sound?   Is it true that Dexter McCluster is so fast that he can catch a screen in the left flat and run 12 yards the week before the ball is in the air?  And, perhaps the greatest and deepest question of all time:  Chiefs Will?

Follow me now as we begin to explore these and other phenomena as we jump into Phootball Filosophy ...

Star-divide

In the beginning, Mankind (and Womankind) had little self-awareness, spending more time with issues and pursuits other than football and philosphy.  Back in those days, most people were simply trying to earn an honest living, working hard to bring home the bacon (or mammoth) and avoid the pitfalls of the La Brea Tar Pits and survie the final cut to beome one of The Right 53.

But soon Man evolved, and it was only a matter of time before leisure time was filled with more esoteric pursuits, such as beer, chips and of course, football.  This naturally led to ancient arguments, although without the convenience of television and the internet, but nonetheless, heated discussions did occur, which gave rise to the first true philosophers, the Pre-Socratics.  Pre-Socratic thinkers were fairly simplistic, givng credence to one-dimensional answers to life's deepest questions.  Thales said that the universe was made of water; Anaximenes said that everything was made of air; Heraclitus decided the world was made of fire; while Pythagoras (below) is generally credited with the first Stat Sheet, believing that everything in the universe was made of numbers.

S2picture5_medium

The birth of modern philosphy is generally attributed to Socrates.  The well-known Socratic Method of dialogue, a series of questions that are asked not only to draw individual answers, but also to encourage fundamental insight into the issue at hand, is also the unwitting origin of the modern blog, and a tool used by ancient sports journalists following the discus event as well as the Sunday games at the Acropolis.  Socrates also said "The unexamined life is not worth living" thus becoming the first philosopher to be quoted by the IRS, as well as supplying early coaches a good excuse to make use of game film as study guides.

Plato, famous student of Socrates, opened the first school of philosophy, the Academy.  Just as Plato learned from Socates, so Todd Haley has learned from Bill Parcells.  His main belief was that knowledge, like the ability to be a great quarterback, is inherent from birth.  We are what we are, not what we learn or study.  Of course, Plato had a terrible secretary and he often contradicted himself in his later writings.  It was Plato's firm belief, as espoused in The Republic, that only philosophers should be in public office.  For Plato, no one else was good enough to lead the masses, no one else had the right character to be a leader of men.  This same philosophy of character and leadership is found in the writings of Scott Pioli's Draft Manual:  Character Matters.

Finally, to wrap up our tour of the Ancient Philosophers, we come to Aristotle.  This is the guy generally credited for applying rational and scientific thought to the world, the idea that there is order to the universe, that we can make sense of the world by observing properties of matter.  Aristotle's teachings and ideas were the basis of almost all thought for hundreds of years until Newton came along, in much the same way that Walter Camp is considered the Father Of American Football and a major force until Vince Lombardi came along.  His words have also inspired Todd Haley to do more than a bit of roster churning a few years later.

And that's all for this section ... we'll be back soon with another Philosophy class soon, and dig deeper into the mysteries of the football universe, forever asking questions and always seeking answers ... until then:

Ups...

I’m pretty sure it can be proven about Tyler Palco’s passes (when there’s no receiver there does It make a sound?)….it probably does….however, the same scenario with Matt Cassel would be impossible to prove because of all of the booing.

I have also thought many times about the comparison between Plato and Pioli but was uncomfortable writing anything about it….thanks for raising the bar a little higher with this post.

he was over-the-top all summer and well into the season, maybe it was him losing his cool, maybe it was all a show just to look the part of Mr Tough Guy (being a young, first-time, brand-new HC and he thought that’s what he needed to look like to the players) … whatever it was, it just wasn’t somethat that appeared to me as being a good thing

he’s mellowed a lot since then, and I’ve noted that a number of times … he seems calmer and, as a result, more mature and more like a leader … a good thing, I think

In the words of the immortal Artie Johnson....

(insert Knotsy accent here> “Vedely Intelestink”.

I’m no Socrates or Plato, but how else can we account for the fact that you can take two men, of the same age, weight, height, and physical stature, both having two eyes, two ears, one nose, one mouth, ten fingers and ten toes, and practice them both in equal measures toward the end of making them a quality starting QB in the NFL, and one becomes a Tom Brady, and the other……a Todd Blackledge?

It’s because even though it’s true that all men are created equal…..their brains are not.

There you go, and now you can call me Plato the 2nd.

Oh yea…..and for resisting the urge to jump on the bash the k-man bandwagon….you get a rec. But this is the last time. :)

On the contrary my mountainous friend....bones including the human skull...can and do grow

Bones are also very much alive. They aren’t just some solid material like metal, they are alive with cells. Human bones have three layers. The smooth, hard outer layer is cortical bone. Beneath this layer are many layers of cancellous bone. Cancellous bone looks kinda like a sponge. Although not quite as hard as cortical bone, it’s still pretty strong. The third and innermost layer is the bone marrow. Bone marrow is like a thick jelly, and its job is to produce blood cells.

Scientific research has yet to conclude the reasons for thicker than normal skull growth, but the potential for the human body to react to acts like driving nails with your skull, cannot be entirely ruled out, and it is entirely possible for the body to react with accelerated growth to the threatened regions, if the body recieved the message during the growth years, that the current rate of growth won’t adequately protect the the brain.

The only thing that does not grow in a human being from the date of one’s birth, is your eyeballs.

They’re the same size at birth as they are as an adult, with the body, in effect, growing around them.

It’s a bit theoretical, and can’t be proven as fact….but these sorts of things have support within the medical and scientific community.

Or as Sarah Palin would say….at this juncture, it can’t be “remudiated”.

Sincerely,

Dr. K. Mann

how DARE you attempt to muddle the picture with FACTS

you cad!

well, you just said it (below) … they stop growing at a certain point … my point is that bone structure (thickness in this case) is predicated on genetics, not on external forces

not necessarily ... evolution is reallyu a matter of which adaptation works and which doesn't

if a genetic difference works and is conducive to survival, then it’s more likely that gene will be passed on, just on the basis of survival by that one creature

if something worked in the past, that’s not a reason for the majority of the species to just die off

Yes but it is widely thought in the scientific

community, that sharks did not evolve, but were a product of creation. Sharks did not evolve from land mammals. They are, and have always been ocean-dwelling, tooth-bearing creatures, with the only known evlolving coming in the form of various tail and dorsal fin and head shape and overall size modification due to changes in diet resulting from climate change over millions of years. They never evolved from a land mammal. In short, they’ve always been here, and for the most part, havn’t changed.

Ok...product of creation is controversial

language for all you evolutionalists out there, but the fact remains….that sharks, appear abruptly in the fossil record about 20 million years ago, and there’s no evidence linking their appearance to the evolution from any other known species be they land, ocean or outer-space inhabitants. Which is why scientists often refer to them as “products of creation”. Any thing they can’t prove as having evolved from something, they classify this way.

Personally, I think 20 million years ago, Aliens dropped them into the oceans from about a mile up, just to witness their high-diving skills, and then they stood around holding up their scores on those little white cards….10, 8, 9, 10.

Depends on which genius you listen to.

The Shroud of Turin proved they don’t know what the hell they’re doing in terms of carbon-dating. I don’t believe anything can be “accurately” dated if it’s over 10,000 years old or so. Looking at layers of Earth or rock layers in canyon walls and that sort of thing is unreliable and a giant speculation in my view. I mean really, on scientist says 20M and one says 400M years ago, the reasearch I’ve read said 20million. Does it really matter? Our brains are no more capable of fathoming sharks swimming around in the ocean 20million years ago than it is fathoming 400million years.

It makes no difference, and neither study is probably correct. Meaning give or take a few million years.

Hell, it could be billions. No one really knows Jack.

But in order to prove evolution...you

have to have “linkage”. In the case of sharks, there is none. They either did not evolve…or we don’t know where from, and havn’t found the linkage yet. Either way, some believe they were simply created in their current similar form, or were delivered here from somewhere unknown and by unknowns. Open your mind to the possibilities. Have you ever created something?

well, the whole issue (read the book!) is that our entire culture (eastern and western) is based on totalitarian agriculture

beginning in the “fertile crescent” area, we went from hunter gatherers to agriculturists … and damn anyone who got in the way (biblically, read Gen 3 and 4, but you have to read Ishmael and you’ll see where the reference is)

if you look at other cultures, what we call “primitive” cultures, there is no such thing as wars to eradicate other cultures, there is no famine from overpopulation, there are no class distinctions as we have, there is no crime, insantiy, ecological issues … it’s all our culture

Check out Easter Island :)

and yes those were humans and a human culture left to fend with no inherent means (natural resources) to survive.

The Chimpanzees react the same way as humans do. push comes to shove and warfare happens, genocide, or cannabilization. We can learn a lot from our not so advanced kin, or the trailer park

the Law of Nature though is this ...

you may compete to the best of your abilities, but you may not “wage war” on your competition, nor may you prevent your competition from getting food

lions don’t go wiping out other prides of lions, nor do they wipe out hyenas .. nor do they attempt to prevent hyenas from obtaining food … one pride will never try to prevent another pride from eating

and when the lions have made their kill, they and the antelope are perfectly at peace side by side … the lions don’t hoard all the antelopes for themselves

right, more precisely ... OUR CULTURE is the aberration

the Bushmen of Africa, the Inuit of Canada, the Aborigine of Australia … those cultures take what is needed and leave the rest

moreover, they spend (on average) a few hours per day “working” … gathering food, hunting, whatever … whereas our society we work 8 hrs a day (or more)

It is not the specifics

But once the frame is in place we have to fight to erase it.
Just as Japan did in the late 30’s many will pay in blood to undo it.
As of now Oil is a commodity going to those that pay the most, once a stranglehold is placed on the origins, than a war will ensue. Has already and continues

A war already has Steve....Do you think we were really going

into Iraq to look for WMD’s? If your’e looking to find the guilty party when it comes to placing a stranglehold on it’s origins you need only look at who is the biggest addict. The US is the oil equivalent of a crack whore. China is becoming one. I wouldn’t let a crackhead baby sit my kids and I wouldn’t believe the US when we say we’re invading oil rich countries to free the people from tyranny and terrorism. We could care less about killing terrorists. The government knows that for everyone we kill, two more take their place, only younger. We went to safeguard the oil production from falling into terrorist hands and creating a huge profit stream for them, and to oversee the redistibution of oil profits and distribution rights in and won’t leave until we’ve insured that those who gain control of same are sympathetic to our addiction. We’ve been doing for years what China is now realizing that she HAS to do, in order to keep their economy going.

Alternative energy sources are the answer.

It's an excellent book, ups

But it’s theory. Not fact. It’s a fictional novel that discusses theories that the author has regarding humanity.

Now while I find the theories interesting and certainly deserving of consideration, perhaps it’s not a good idea to base your view of humanity on a work of fiction?

I mean, would you base your entire opinion of creativity and ego on The Fountainhead?

You know ups...

that’s a pretty big step in a male-male relationship.

Perhaps that’s why he’s hesitating.:)

I know I wouldn’t do it.

You would have to help me on moving day before I would email ya.

I am grateful that Quinn doesn't merely make up history

I got into more debates after “The Da Vinci Code” came out than I could even handle.

it’s very dangerous when truth and fiction are mixed… But I suppose, much like Rand, that discussion can wait for another day :)

I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

by MNchiefsfan on Aug 30, 2010 2:06 PM CDT up reply actions

right, that's one reason I really like what Quinn writes ... it's a fictional setting as a novel, but the FACTS are indeed true and historical

About Quinn:

He studied at St. Louis University, the University of Vienna, and Loyola University of Chicago, receiving a bachelor’s degree in English, cum laude, in 1957 and has served as Biography and Fine Arts editor at the American Peoples Encyclopedia, managing editor of the Greater Cleveland Mathematics Program (Science Research Associates), head of the mathematics department at Encyclopedia Britannica Educational Corporation, Executive Editor of Fuller & Dees Publishing (a division of the Times Mirror Corporation) and Editorial Director of the Society for Visual Education

the point being he’s not just some guy writing novels, he’s a VERY well-educated and intelligent guy who’s presenting another way to think about our place in “the world”

Tsk tsk, Steve... One of the classic blunders!

Never get involved in a land war in Asia!

The Chiefs will see a return to respectability in 2010, emerging as the front runner in the AFC West! ....And I'll quantify that however I choose. Ahem.

Wasn't a land war

If the US can’t get the troops to wherever via ship, the war is lost anyway

Steve, Steve...stop thinking in terms of getting troops anywhere overseas for a military confrontation with China.

Even if we could get every single troop we have in all four branches of the military to land in China and on China’s shores at the exact same time…..the chances of being successful are worse than the odds of being the one sperm that reaches and fertilizes the egg.

We can’t win a war with China….the have an armed troop for every man woman and child in the United States.

Your a dangerous man.

Damn

Yes, Alexander, Napoleon, and Hitler all lost that same war.
No I am not proposing that, Yet. Without allies, The Russians and the Indians could be a Geopolitical buffer.

truth is, China doesn't want a physical war any more than we do ...

they’ll threaten it if and when they need to, as in the case of Taiwan … I’m still upset that we never stood up to them on that issue

Well Taiwan was the Chinese Gvnmt we supported in WWII

Yet we supported as best we could the peasants on mainland China.
Do the Chinese wnat a war with the US. No, they don’t as long as we don’t interfere in Chinese politics and make our interest payments

They are to a degree confronting the US

Just as Japan did. Yet the Chinese and the Asiatic mind is much more wily than dealing with the European mind we are used too. It is like Chess vs checkers

Confronting the Chinese in any military way….would be the biggest mistake this country could ever make, especially coming on the heels of two other needless wars.

Actually it is a matter of saving Face

We get confrontational and we lose face and China wins.
We need a win win type of diplomacy, so far we are in a lose win (which to China is fine).
