Chiefs vs. Eagles Preseason: Looking For Tony Moeaki
The Kansas City Chiefs spent a third round pick on TE Tony Moeaki out of Iowa. He wasn't expected to be Tony Gonzalez but he was expected to fairly quickly become the Chiefs best receiving option at tight end.
The biggest knock on him coming out of school was a somewhat significant injury history.
He started off practicing with the Chiefs during their rookie minicamp in May. After that, he missed about a month with some sort of stomach issue.
He returned in training camp to get off to a good start. Less than two weeks in, he was injured again in the Chiefs intra-squad scrimmage.
That caused him to miss the first preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.
He traveled and dressed for the second preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Chiefs started in a double tight end set with Moeaki and he wasn't seen from after that play. [Editor's Note: So technically his debut was last week but you know what I mean.]
So now we stand at the third preseason game with little idea of what Moeaki can do against another NFL team. And the problem with that is he's already behind Leonard Pope. The Chiefs love Pope so I'm not sure if Moeaki was ever a legitimate contender to take the starting job in week one but his absence during the first two preseason games seemingly confirm he won't.
I would think he'll play this evening against the Philadelphia Eagles Then again, I thought he would be playing last week against the Bucs.
Maybe we'll see Moeaki's debut this evening.

Another TE who will rarely see the field! Just what this team needed.
Politics aside, Obama would of better been served, buying 5 "new" football teams.
Hey, since we're reading into everything
That happens during preseason and projecting it onto peoples’ entire careers, I think it’s awesome that Cassel’s going to be 75% accurate for the rest of his life.
Also, it really stinks that JC’s only going to get 5 carries a game this year.

Couldn't stay on the field at Iowa, yet to see the field here

Hey, I'm not saying you're wrong for sure.
But you’re saying that as if it’s been 10 games.
It’s been two preseason games, and technically, he HAS seen the field for one play against TB :)

Moeaki would have played (more?) last week
But when he and Croyle were throwing some warmup passes on the sideline, they both got injured.

A little off topic
First off in regard to Moeaki, its not a big deal. It is the pre season and more than likely the Chiefs are airing on the side of caution with him. Injury’s happen, he doesn’t have a Croyle like history, and TE isn’t like many positions where reps are gold. Important yet but 2 games into the PRESEASON we shoudn’t make any judgements…
BUUUT, although I am excited to see what we can do against the Eagles, I am TERRIFIED to see what Mr. Rodgers and company will do against our defense next week. Watching the Colts get absolutely crushed scared the hell out of me. The Colts D isn’t anything to special but they were torn to pieces and that isn’t good on the mental side of defense. Coincidently that’s exactly what I don’t want to see happen to our fragile defense leading into week one.
I hope we can build some major momentum these two games and steal a W or two…
But we need to stop worrying about petty injury’s to rookie TE"s
Is anyone really worrying...
or are we just discussing an issue that a lot of Chief fans care about. I want to see Tony on the field tonight in a couple different situations. I want to see him against the first team D of Phili. I want to see him help the RT block Brandon Graham and a blitzing LB. But most of all I want to see him run a route and catch a pass.
As for the Packers next week, Rodgers will only play a series or two at the most so I don’t believe it will be an issue.

No injury history? This is all just from college
he broke his wrist and dislocated his elbow on the same play
he underwent surgery and not only missed the rest of the 2007 season but also spring practice
making a routine cut in pre-season workouts when he broke his foot
tried to come back too soon from that injury, which led to hamstring and calf ailments
He needed a second surgery to repair the foot after the season and missed spring ball again
He also suffered concussions against Iowa State and Illinois
Politics aside, Obama would of better been served, buying 5 "new" football teams.

Croyle could pull that list off in a long weekend

Hey, sticks and stones can break Brodie Croyle's bones but names
can also somehow actually hurt him. No one knows how – it’s something of a medical mystery.

all fluke injuries.
Pioli and Haley, who hate injured players, drafted him.
He will play. It is pre-season, and there are other tight ends who will be getting cut soon. reps need to be given to weed out which ones will stay.

Availability
Moeaki needs to get some.
10 + wins in 2010. Chiefs SHOCK the NFL!!! Mark it down.
I think Moeaki will play some, but not much til 2nd Half (after starters have been mostly pulled)
he’s not looking at the starting job, not yet, not by a long shot right now … now, whether it’s because Haley loves Pope from his days in Arizona, or because Moeaki’s just not ready yet, who knows for sure (Haley knows and Joel should confront him with this question!)

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
It's not like Pope is a terrible option
He has decent hands and is a big target. He’s just no good at getting YAC, and isn’t very fast.
I’ll take average over what we had to start last year.
Moeaki… well, we’ll see what things are like at midseason. If he’s still on-and-off, then I believe it’d be better to get out now than try out an injury prone guy for three years.

When we first drafted Moeaki, I thought it
was a good move. He is a good pass catching tight end and can block as well. But in the NFL you have to be available. I don’t know what all is going on with him, but his absence on the playing field is ominous. I am not sure he can make the team if he does not get on the field.
"The Hammer"
Chiefs need to be looking for another tightend
they don’t want to go into the season with just Pope and mobreaki
Green bay seems to have several and might get rid of a decent one
Maybe we can go kidnap Hoomanwuaiwoflekwjfwallawalladingdong from the Rams
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
I think people make too big of a deal out of who plays how much and why.
it is only pre-season
I am not worried about things we haven’t seen:
McCluster being featured at receiver
Moeaki getting significant reps
And in the regular season, I’ll be looking at other things. For instance:
Cassel’s play
the Center and RT position
Carr’s play at CB
and the NT/LB play

Moeaki, drafted two rounds later, and needed less has still played more than Dez Bryant.
