Kansas City Chiefs Release Third Depth Chart Of The Year

Photo

The Kansas City Chiefs have released their third unofficial depth chart of the preseason. Todd Haley always says this depth chart doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Here's the first one and here's the second one.

There weren't many changes this week as the Chiefs prepare for the Philadelphia Eagles. Here are a few highlights:

Here's the full depth chart.

Star-divide

OFFENSE

WR: Chris Chambers, Jerheme Urban, Quinten Lawrence, Jeremy Horne, Verran Tucker

LT: Branden Albert, Barry Richardson, Tyler Eastman

LG: Brian Waters, Ikechuku Ndukwe, Darryl Harris

C: Rudy Niswanger, Casey Wiegmann, Lemuel Jeanpierre

RG: Ryan Lilja, Jon Asamoah, Dan Santucci

RT: Ryan O'Callaghan, Colin Brown, Bobby Greenwood

Bobby Greenwood is added to the mix coming from the defensive line.

TE: Leonard Pope, Tony Moeaki, Jake O'Connell, Cody Slate, Leroy Banks

WR: Dwayne Bowe, Dexter McCluster, Terrance Copper, Lance Long, Rich Gunnell

QB: Matt Cassel, Brodie Croyle, Tyler Palko, Bill Stull

Bill Stull is added this week after being signed last week.

FB: Tim Castille, Mike Cox

RB: Thomas Jones, Jamaal Charles, Javarris Williams, Jackie Battle, Kestahn Moore

A couple changes here. First, Williams is now the third running back after being fifth last week. Part of that is necessity because Kestahn Moore is injured but apparently he leapfrogged Battle.

DEFENSE

LDE: Tyson Jackson, Shaun Smith, Alex Magee, Dion Gales

NT: Ron Edwards, Derek Lokey, Garrett Brown

RDE: Glenn Dorsey, Wallace Gilberry, Dion Gales

Bobby Greenwood is taken off this list because he switched to the offensive line. Also, Jeffrey Fitzgerald was on here last week but he was cut. Gales is now the fourth defensive end on the left side and the third on the right side.

LOLB: Mike Vrabel, Andy Studebaker, John Russell

LILB: Jovan Belcher, Corey Mays Justin Cole

RILB: Derrick Johnson, Demorrio Williams, David Herron, Cory Greenwood

ROLB: Tamba Hali, Cameron Sheffield, Pierre Walters

LCB: Brandon Flowers, Maurice Leggett, Mike Richardson, Jackie Bates

RCB: Brandon Carr, Javier Arenas, Travis Daniels, Ricky Price

SS: Eric Berry, Reshard Langford, DaJaun Morgan

FS: Jon McGraw, Kendrick Lewis, Donald Washington

SPECIAL TEAMS

P: Dustin Colquitt, Ryan Succop

K: Ryan Succop, Dustin Colquitt

KO: Ryan Succop, Dustin Colquitt

PC: Thomas Gafford, Cory Greenwood

KC: Thomas Gafford, Cory Greenwood

H: Dustin Colquitt, Tyler Palko

PR: Javier Arenas, Dexter McCluster, Quinten Lawrence

KR: Javier Arenas, Dexter McCluster, Quinten Lawrence

How many WRs do we keep?

Looks like my boy Tucker is gonna get the boot.

Couldn’t do much in the Pac-10…doubt he can do much in the NFL.

probably 5 or 6, depending on special teams contributions and how they classify Dex

my money is on:

Bowe, Chambers, Horne, Urban, McCluster, and either Lawrence or Copper.

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

by stagdsp on Aug 23, 2010 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Lawrence v Copper?

Tough to differentiate these two. All I can remember is Cooper’s long haul in the very beginning of that Donkey’s game last year. Lawrence is supposed to be fast, but he seems to suck at returns.

Looks like the end of the road for AP favorite Lance Long.

by Another Failed Tedford QB on Aug 23, 2010 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Copper is Haleys guy

there is no way they keep Lawrence over him. They have already cut him once last year.

by penut on Aug 23, 2010 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions

just my guess...

I’m still rooting for Long, and Haley does like him, I think…. but he will probably lose the numbers game

But, they are giving Lawrence a long look at the ST roles, so if he can make an impression there, then he’s got a shot.

Copper is pretty good in ST coverage

I’d take him over Lawrence

Move D. Williams?

Any chance Williams can play the LILB or he pretty set on the right side. I thought he has looked good this preseason.

dead horse argument here...

but, no… DJ and DW are clearly WILB (weak side) NOT SILB (strong side)

How about we both agree that no one cares what anyone thinks

And not tell people how to post. Ups, Arrowspread, myself, and TRS all had a spirited debate the other day on environmentalism…. and I didn’t see anyone trying to tell us to “stick to football”.

The road may lead us to a strange place…

Bottom line is, unless someone posts something horrible that needs to be removed, either debate it or ignore it. And if it needs to be removed, flag it.

I would hardly call that a bashing.

And besides, I don’t think anyone who’s paying attention, can deny that Barak has changed his mind on a number of issues at the last minute.

But I’m still a big fan. The alternatives are getting scarier and scarier every day for Republicans.

I mean, Sarah Palin? She has to be the most ignorant presidential candidate in history.

The only reason McCain picked her is so no one would want to assassinate him.

If he was 10 years younger, it might have worked. In the end, people were afraid he would die during office of natural causes, and the unthinkable could have actually happened.

There is a God.

sports in this country to bring people together….especially for the difficult relationships that exist between fathers and sons, in my opinion. The Chiefs provide common ground.

To be honest

I think McCain didn’t really have enough of a base.

He’s too middle of the road to call himself a conservative, and he’s too conservative to call himself a middle of the road (in the mind of most left-leaners). And he flip flops as often as Barrack, perhaps even more so.

So really, the only people that voted for him (including me) were those that didn’t want Obama in office, not necessarily those that liked his politics.

All that said, I agree that Palin was certainly not an ideal candidate. She was likely picked to fulfill that “maverick” label McCain treasured so much :)

If you’re looking for a few decent alternatives in the Republican Party, I’d suggest reading about Indiana’s current governor Mitch Daniels. He’s done a great job getting that state out of the red and into the black, even though he had to make some unpopular choices to do it.

I also enjoy Colonel Allen West, although I know less about him since he has no political career as of yet.

Maybe those names give you something fun to do for a few minutes today….

I'm straddling the aisle. :)

Actually, I’ve frequented other forums in the past which were great at a point, but seemed to degenerate once political discussions began appearing. And I’ve seen others on this forum (who have been here longer) squelch political talk, presumably for this reason.

That said, I agree that I should lighten up a bit. Also, I’m not exactly a Democrat.

So comparing Haley to my President all of the sudden makes

it political? Please, I can’t wait to hear this one. Tell me how it offended you to see your President’s name in print. Tell me how AP prohibits typing the names of our President within our comments.

I guess I can’t talk about Fred Arbanas then ever huh. A former Kansas City Chief from 1961 to 1970 and six time AFL All-Pro, Mr. Arbanas has been in the Jackson County Legislature since 1973. He is a four-time Chairman of the Legislature (1974, 1975, 1988, and 1989). He was inducted to the Kansas City Chiefs "Hall of Fame" in 1973 and the Missouri Sports "Hall of Fame" in 1997.

Politics is part of life in America. References to politicians are as commonplace as a bear shitting in the woods.

I love guys like you who come in hear and think they can “regulate” the personalites of others.

Read this thread. Most of the time, I come in here to talk football….in detail. For you to say I’m turning it into a political forum because jokingly said he changes his mind like Obama, is just fueling a potential fire.

And you would have never said a word unless you thought I was a Republican, who disliked Obama, and that is what offended you, not my comment.

The funny thing is, that you are guilty of contempt, prior to investigation. Not a good trait to have.

I’m a proud democrat who voted for Barak Obama, and an anti-war activist.

Your saying we at AP should only know the parts of the people we comment with everyday, that we deem acceptable? It’s ok to talk to them everyday, but god forbid, we should actually get to know them, and in so doing, learn their political affiliations?

And for the argument, that this is not the place for it….it’s never the wrong place to get to know someone. There’s no shortage of cyberspace. You won’t ever read the last page of the internet. So stop trying to regulate comments and avoid personalities that don’t share your exact political point of view.

Trying to keep people from mentioning politics of some kind during their comments about the Chiefs, is like trying to lick all the chocolate off a snickers bar. It’s just not worth the effort, and before you get done…it all sort of just melts together.

Political opinions are part of what makes talking to people interesting.

Besides you may not be correct in your assumptions about someone, unless you take some time to get to know them.

Many of the posters on AP have become friends outside of AP.

I’m a political satire perfomance artist. That’s part of who I am. Politics is part of what shapes us as people, and shapes our comments as well. There’s a big difference between the songs I write, produce and perform as an artist, and comparing Haley’s mind changing to our President’s.

Anyone who wants to know what makes the K-Man tick, only needs to read my lyrics and hear me perform them.

http://www.reverbnation.com/artist/artist_songs/121449

I’m passionate about everything I do, and there are things more important in this world than football games.

For us, as Chiefs fans, to go about our business, and stick our heads in the sand, and to pretend that the only thing in life that is important and worth of discussion in here, undermines the sense of community and the sense of public service that the Chiefs have come to stand for.

Brian Waters was the man of the year for his actions OFF of the football field.

You are wrong. Politics is how we as fans can make the world a better place in which to live. The Chiefs players don’t work tirelessly to set this example, so guys like you can try to steal awareness by silenceing voices in chat rooms.

Shame on you. We should welcome the whole person, to AP, not just pick and choose, which parts of them we want to know.

Myself, I can be a boisterous, verbose, and sometimes a difficult person who enjoys a good argument a bit more then the next guy. But that’s who I am, I am a Chiefs fan, and along with that, I have a responsiblity with my voice to try to make this world a better place than when I came here.

I’m not about to let anyone pick and choose, which parts of my personality they want to hear from, and let them shun the rest of me. Which is what you would have everyone do.

Enjoy my songs. In many ways, they were written as a defense for opinions like you, which bring harm to the world.

Thanks for taking the time to post that.

I’ll admit though, I stopped reading after the first paragraph.

I will apologize for reading too much into your initial comment though, it really was harmless…and I’m not being sarcastic.

For the record, I’m a political moderate…agree generally with the GOP on economic issues (very generally) and agree generally with the Donkeys on social issues (again, very generally). As for Obama, I’m indifferent toward him…like him better than W. or McCain, but I wouldn’t say he’s a great leader either. Then again, I’m not looking to be led.

(and yeah, I’m being a hypocrite by calling you out for a political reference, then talking about politics…oh well) :)

To be more precise...

Go to AP’s homepage, and in th upper right hand corner there is a search box… put in something like “DJ strong side” and click search… then go to the tab marked comments.

AP’s search engine is kind of iffy, but just try searching through a couple different phrases and you’ll get something.

Haley himself explains it for about 20mins. But to give you a quick answer WILB’s are usually “smaller” and faster. SILB’s need to be bigger and stronger to take on more blocks. Could they flip flop? Technically yes but it would be learning a whole new position, and yes the assignments are that different

48% of all tackles among ILB's are made by the "weakside" linebacker...

No, I don't think they do actually, I think they line up accordingly to level

the odds to the extent that they have the ability to do so, which is why you will see the two ILB’s swith places, as soon as a WR or TE or RB, shifts or goes in motion….they’re playing the odds. 50% of the time, after the play begins, and all the shifting takes place, the ball migrates, (is run, or thrown to) the weakside of the play, rendering the knowing moot. Which is why 48% of all ILB tackles, take place from the so-called weakside linebacker on the so-called strongside of the field.

I appreciate your opinion, and you obviously have some passion for the game….and you may not in fact be wrong….. but I hope you are, for the Chiefs sake. I’m tired of losing.

Makes sense

Playing the odds of having the best player in the right position is part of the game. When Haley talked about the types of players (physical attributes, strengths, style of play, etc.) that they want lined up as the will or sam backer, I thought it was clear that when a LB lines up on the strong or weak side, their strengths must play into having more opponents on their side, thus likely facing more double team blocks and requiring more physical prowess to absorb or play through those blocks. DJ/DW they believe are better utilized playing one on one, while Belcher/Mays are better utilized as taking those stronger blocks.

by FalconMF27 on Aug 23, 2010 3:49 PM CDT up reply actions

That's true Falcon.....

Your getting it. But I think what your failing to recognize, is how important that actually is to the outcome of the play on a percentage basis. Because, within about 1 second, when the direction of the play turns from “guess” to “fact”, it no longer matters. The plays that it does matter, simply means the strong back gets to the ball a second before he normally would. But half of the time, the ball actually winds up or is geared toward the weakside of the field. That’s why I say, there’s too much importance placed upon the the strong and weak linebacker argument.

Haley’s argument really boils down to body fat. Belcher and Mays have harder bodies, and Haley thinks that lends itself toward being able to take harder hits and more hard hits over a long season.

I just don’t see that argument holding up over Williams record for making tackles, and the fact that in 16 games last year, he led the club, and was never injured.

In short, I disagree with you (and yes Todd) on this one.

is still based on prediction though. All plays must have a pre-snap in which its the coaches and players duties to put the appropriate players in the appropriate place. That’s really the only thing that can be predicted pre-play. They can’t just have chaos of where players line up expecting everything on the opposing offense to go the opposite of what they have lined up. The coaches must still put who they believe the best player is for their position, and if there is a heavy emphasis on that body type (or body fat) that goes into specific positions they utilize (WILB/SILB as opposed to just an ILB), then I can’t really argue against their reasoning based on putting the right players in the right positions.

With that said, has DJ given you any reason to believe that he could play either will or sam backer consistently enough to be a starter? And that is the essence of why you and I disagree about him

All true.

And to answer your question. Have you ever seen Belcher or Mays or Williams intercept two passes and run them back for touchdowns? I haven’t. DJ didn’t do much on Saturday, but he wasn’t poor.

There’s a big difference between the way DJ plays in pre-season, and the way he plays when a big spotlight is shining on him. In short, I would have to say, his heart, and his ego which is the size of Montana, makes him better and is what gives him the big play potential that the others lack.

Show me a linebacker without a huge ego, and I’ll show you an average linebacker.

Free-lancer

I’m not denying DJ’s big play abilities, with his athleticism. But it’s hard to deny his undisciplined, inconsistent play rearing it’s ugly head more often than it should. Haley’s been quoted saying to “be the same guy everyday”, and I’m a firm believer in that b/c you know what you’re going to get from the player. With DJ, we might get 2 INTs, we might get zero tackles. DJs strengths have never been taking on blockers or being very physically aggresive towards ball carriers, so if that’s his only consistency, then that’s what the coaches have the most info on, and will probably base their game plan/depth chart off of that, and not DJs possibility of the big play

to be coupled with the surest tackler on the team…and that’s DW.

So wouldn't you think....

That DJ would be better utilized on the field LESS as a nickelbacker in obvious passing downs as opposed to being on the field every play, putting himself and possibly his teammates out of position more often?

Besides, there's no such thing as an obvious

passing down.

As soon as your sure they’re passing, then bam, they’ll sting you on the ground.

And there’s no way DJ can put another player out of position. if a guy is out of position, it’s his fault not DJ’s.

He needs to be in the game. Period.

How many tackles do you have to make on each play?

Answer) ONE. Each ILB has a strength and weaknesses.

I just think the combination of DJ’s and DW’s are the best mix.

Belcher and Mays strengths and skill sets are much like DW’s, only they’re young and not as developed or as skilled as DW at this point in time. Next year, mabye. This year, I don’t see it.

You won’t see DW push and tackle a guy in the wrong direction for an extra 5 yards. I see that all the time from Mays and Belcher.

Awareness……they just don’t have it like DW yet.

Besides, it's not like DJ never makes a tackle.

He makes as many tackles as Belcher or Mays when he’s in the game, he just appears a bit more apprehensive about it. But lately, he’s been appearing to be less afraid to sacrifice his body and take the pain.

I agree

Mays and Belcher may not be developed far enough yet to fully understand what we have in them. And for me, its more about having the LBs that can not only make that one tackle but not put his teammates in a tougher position to make the tackle if they can’t; that was a problem with DJ during the Vermeil and Herm days as well, trying to avoid blocks, finesse around them, allowing a slight push from a blocker to run him out of the play and move on to the next block with DJ trailing the ball carrier. Sometimes, you just have to tie up that blocker to free up your teammates, something DJ has never really done well

Whoops

Hit post too soon! The point of my last post titled “free-lancer” was b/c his possibility of the big play, from what I’ve seen, is his tendency to be out of position, roaming the field. It definitely can pay dividends, but is definitely a high risk/high reward style of play, especially if it’s expected of you from the coaches and the fellow players on the field for you to be in a certain position on the field. The other players can’t adjust on the fly their play just b/c DJ decides to do it.

That's what I think this team needs though. Give a guy

like DJ a little freedom, and that’s how great things happen on the football field. Let them use their instincts a little bit. They’re the ones out there on the field actually playing the game. When your out there you hear thing, there’s a lot of communication on the field. If all players did everything by the textbook, there would be a lot less on the highlight reels. Like I said, there only needs to be one tackle on the play. I think we can afford to have one LB on the field, who isn’t the biggest tackle master in the NFL, but who has a knack, for making a big momentum changing play.

You know, we actually DO agree on more than

we disagree about pertaining to the ILB’s.

I think in the end, your risk vs. reward comment sums up our differences of opinion.

I think the risk of DJ is worth the reward, and you don’t, and thats cool.

I’m not trying to change you mind, but I think if DJ starts, and gets an IT on MNF and either scores, or sets up a score, and we wind up winning by 3 points in the last 30 seconds of the game….you may come around to my way of thinking.

In my 40 years of watching and analyzing the Chiefs, it’s happened more than once.

Just do me a favor and keep an open mind. I’ll do the same.

And just so you know. I have never formed an opinion of a Chiefs player, his potential or his ability.

It is, and has always been, the player himself, who forms my opinion.

I may well decide that your opinion was correct or becomes correct, and if that happens, it will not be because I suddenly realized, that you were right and I was wrong, it will be because the player changed my mind.

To this point, I’ve seen nothing strong enough, to indicate to me that we should not start DW at strongside LB and DJ on the weakside, for the home opener on MNF.

Let’s let the players decide.

And one thing that always bothered me....

whenever DJ’s name comes up, there is always the words, playmaker, big play ability, athleticism, so forth and so on. And you never see those words in conjunction with Belcher or Mays, or even Williams. So it’s definitely not that he lacks the ability to tackle like a Williams.

Which leaves only one thing. Willilngness.

The only thing DJ lacks, is an overwhelming desire to completely give himself over and become completely willing to throw caution to the wind, and become a complete tackler.

I think he can do that. He’s gifted. I think Romeo Crennel, can inspire him to dig deep, and become that guy. The guy with the big play, playmaking ability, COMBINED with the athleticism, to be a ferocious, and consistent tackler.

And I think it can happen now. But it won’t if he doesn’t start. I think Romeo feels exactly the same way about DJ as I do, and the only reason his name appeared number one on the depth chart after a lackluster Saturday against the Falcons, is that Romeo cashed in a chip with Haley, and made it happen. Romeo, thinks the timing is right, 2 weeks before the start of the season, to inspire DJ to greatness. And I think he’s doing the right thing.

Guys with egos like DJ’s need to be stroked, they need to be believed in, the need unconditional support, and when they get it, great things happen.

When they don’t, you can see their sadness in their play on the field.

Guys like DJ need to be coached, and inspired. And when it’s done correctly, there are no limits on the field of play for guys like him.

I think Romeo has figured it out, and he’s about to coach all of DJ’s question marks away.

Why else, would they put DJ on top after Saturday.

by TheK-man on Aug 23, 2010 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Possibly

I can agree that I really don’t know why DJ is the starter after this last weekend. Perhaps you may be right, and I can’t deny that Romeo is arguably the best defensive coordinator (maybe I should say most decorated) DJ’s played for in his career and hopefully you’re right, k-man, and he can get out of DJ what other coaches/coordinators have failed to do thus far. DJs tendencies have been what he is as a player for 6 years, so I don’t know how easy it will be for Romeo to coach him out of his bad habits, but if he can, and make him a complete LB, then I’m all for it.
I am for the best LB to play, but that doesn’t just mean the most athletic or potential, it means the most consistent in being what he is supposed to be on the field.

FYI

My mind was never closed to any possibilities, I just have been waiting and waiting with DJ, like everyone has, and one good game last season doesn’t give me any reason to put faith in DJ to be a player that he hasn’t been so far in his career. There may be no more maddening inconsistent player in my eyes than DJ, and I hope he earns his starting place, and not have it handed to him, especially after his comments to the media about “wanting to start over wanting to be a Chief”. Grrrrrr

But it seems that we do agree on what we expect from him, just differ on if we believe he can get there. Hopefully he shows more than he did against Tampa in the next game or two.

There is also the distinct possibility

That he won’t prove himself and earn it during pre-season and will be the starter.

I think DJ is the type who shines when it counts.

It wouldn’t surprise me if we had to wait until the regular season for his to prove why he needs to start.

In fact, I think it’s likely.

depending on which side the extra offensive player, usually the tight end, either lines up on or goes in motions to. Next time you see the tight end go in motion, or a WR go in motion, or a RB shift to the other side, you will notice them switch places accordingly.

This is only a preseason chart

but if Williams has played better that Battle or Moore, Lawrence has played better than Horne, Niswayer over Weigmann??? This is all you need to know on why the Chiefs are picked to win 5 games and 4th place in the AFC West,

by NFL season ticket holder on Aug 23, 2010 1:04 PM CDT reply actions

Well, Haley has explicitely said on mulitple occasions that the pre-season depth chart doesn't matter

And I think he means it. I think it’s used as a motivational tool more than anything else.

I usually prefer draft picks to succeed but

I really want Slate to be our 3rd tight end, unlike O’Connell he can actually catch

So much for adding a NT in the offseason...

…he couldn’t even beat out Ron Edwards to point where Smith is now listed as an end. I really hope that doesn’t come back to bite us (the lack of addressing this need on the DLine).

Assuming (correctly) that a free-agent DT wasn't an option,

which of our draft picks would you AT THIS MOMENT give away for a DT of comparable talent?

Frankly, I can’t think of one.

…I understand the position we are in, I was just hoping Smith would step up and take the spot. I guess I just had a bit higher expectation for him.

For me its easy.

Terrance Cody over Arenas.
Arenas has been great in the return game, but so could Dexter/Charles/Lawrence if given the opportunity.

by craig in calgary on Aug 23, 2010 1:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Lawrence has looked terrible

and I’m guessing they would prefer not to use Charles if he is going to be featured in the offense. I agree Dexter seems perfect for it, but didn’t do it much in college and seems like I read about him muffing some in practice during camp.

You can get decent return men in the 7th/UDFA's

I guess my point is the positional value of NT in a 34 is more important than nickle/return guy.
The fact that Cody was drafted by Baltimore tells me that he can be a dominant guy inside, as Ozzie Newsome knows a thing or two about drafting Dlinemen.

by craig in calgary on Aug 23, 2010 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Tell that to the Bears

They basically made a superbowl because of their defense and a return guy.

by CapsLockKey on Aug 23, 2010 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, early returns have been positive on Cody, as well

and Cam Thomas, for that matter

So, I’m not sure why KC didn’t like either, but it’s clear they didn’t.

I think they wanted Troup, and weren’t going to settle for the others, so they moved on to their next favorite player that fit a huge need, which is Arenas

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

by stagdsp on Aug 23, 2010 2:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Havent seen anything

The only thing I’ve seen about Cody is that he failed his conditioning test early in training camp. I’ve seen nothing else about him. What have you seen, stag?

I would say how late Cam Thomas fell that he clearly wasn’t on Pioli/Haley’s radar and agree that Troup may have been their target with the Arenas pick, considering how much work Crennel put in with scouting him.

you're crazy

you never take a good return man/nickleback over a good NT

hell we probably should of taken 2 nose tackles in the 2nd round this year instead of the smurf brothers.

yea, yea, yea … McCluster is going to get 1,500 yards from scrimmage

guess what … Ron Edwards is going to give up 2,500 yards from the NT position

by Home skillet on Aug 23, 2010 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions

What's more important?

Giving their $60 mil. QB some help on the offensive side of the ball with the quote, unquote “most dangerous offensive rookie” or another big body to add to a position that clearly needs a rotation? Seems like a waste to use a 2nd round pick on a player that will only see a portion of the defensive snaps. Just saying

given up against the run, you make sure and give your DMC jersey a big hug.

btw – McCluster isn’t a full time player either

if they do use DMC full time then all 170lbs of him will be out of the league in 3 years

Versatility

Arenas can play nickelback, return punts, return kicks (VERY successfully so far, i might add) and has shown great ability to help support the run. Arenas can do a multitude of things. That’s like getting multiple players with one pick :-)

Maybe we're better off waiting for Jerrelle Powe next year

Just because we need a good NT doesn’t mean there was one available in the draft, right? It’s not like there’s a dominant NT that comes out of every draft class. I’d rather see them draft the best player on the board at a position of need rather than draft based on the most important position & end up with a mediocre team of high picks.

Predictions:
This year will be better

by jmcgoblue on Aug 23, 2010 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Torrell troup,terrance cody,Cam Thomas

we had our choice of NT’s except for Dan Williams

jospeh Linval too who many projected as a NT in the NFL

don’t get me started on all the linebackers/rushbackers we passed up

by Home skillet on Aug 23, 2010 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Just because those guys were the best of this class

doesn’t mean they are going to be high quality NFL players. Pioli and Crennel were involved in scouting/drafting Wilfork, so I’ll trust their judgment on what makes a good NT.

Predictions:
This year will be better

good enough for Baltimore...

and i give them the edge on knowing good defense

by Home skillet on Aug 23, 2010 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

You mean Cody?

Point taken, but Baltimore is in more of a position to roll the dice. Besides, I’m pretty sure he’s going to be a DT in the 4-3 there, so they didn’t really draft him to play NT.

No doubt I could be proven wrong a few years from now, but I have to think that Pioli wasn’t oblivious to the need for a better NT…I have to assume that he passed on Cody because he doesn’t expect anything great from him.

This year will be better

I swore that I saw Shaun Smith lining up at DT/NT during this weekend’s game. Maybe it was in a nickle package, but I remember thinking about last week’s depth chart… Oh well…

Battle behind Williams?

Jackie Battle was our overall best RB last week (I know it was against the scrubs), and he showed some good signs last season. They will keep Copper. Not so much as a WR, but he is reportedly one our best Special Teams players.

There once was a man from Nantucket......Nevermind.

by Racyman on Aug 23, 2010 1:17 PM CDT reply actions

I know the depth chart doesn't matter much

But it’s got to be pretty demoralizing for a guy like Jackie Battle to have a great game and then move DOWN on the depth chart. Not sure what the logic is there.

by AdamKC on Aug 23, 2010 1:24 PM CDT reply actions

I wouldn't look into Williams over Battle too much

I’m guessing this last game was Battle’s game to get several carries and show what he can do, next week it will be Williams who gets more. That way they can better evaluate each guy. Battle made a strong case, let’s see if Williams can answer.

but like

Todd Haley said don’t pay so much mind 2 the depth chart…to me I think I understand Haley where’s he’s coming from.. for a fact he said Jamaal is where he need’s him to be.. meaning he hasn’t skip a beat since last year he’s good.. don’t got to worry about Jamaal but Jones on the other hand has to get use to the O-Line and stuff.. so I can see why he’s first on depth chart so he can get more rep’s with the first unit.. Jamaal already has it figure out…
