Chiefs Vs. Bucs Preseason: Running Backs Stay Strong

The Kansas City Chiefs running back situation is getting interesting. I'm not sure a lot of folks are aware of some of the talent in the backfield.

In game one, Thomas Jones ran just two times for two yards and Jamaal Charles was easily the best running back on the field.

In game two, Jones rushed eight times for 29 yards. On a handful of occasions he was able to get the short first down so he served his purpose. He looked OK -- not bad but not great. Charles is still easily the best running back if you go by on-field performance in the first two preseason games.

Charles once again averaged over five yards per carry on Saturday night with 26 yards on five carries.

There are a few interesting notes about the Chiefs running backs on Saturday night.

  • Jones lost a fumble on the first series of the game. Even worse considering Todd Haley and the coaching staff were preaching a fast start all week.
  • Jackie Battle had a good night rushing the ball 11 times for 59 yards leading all rushers.
  • Tyler Palko had 28 yards rushing on four carries, the highest per-carry average on the team.
  • Kestahn Moore and Javarris Williams may be playing for the same spot on the roster. Moore was inactive for this game and Williams rushed four times for 10 yards.

team running back is going to be an interesting battle as will the bottom of the roster. I am stoked about the RB situation

Charles had a great catch.

Probably the best catch of the night. It was on a 10 yard out pattern and Cassell gunned it. I like the spread offense they were running with Charles and Mcculster on the field at the same time, what a matchup nightmare for a defense.

Battle probably had the best run of the night when he hurdled the Dback diving for his legs.

Is there really any question

that Charles is one of the best running backs in the league, much less the best back on the team? I really hope we don’t see a less extreme version of last year’s LJ situation where Charles sits on the bench way too much in favor of an older, less talented running back.

by m.yashi on Aug 22, 2010 2:26 PM CDT reply actions

I think a lot of us have that fear

But I believe it will prove to be unfounded. It’s preseason, and I think the coaches see no reason to overuse a guy that they know is great.

Also, think of it this way. TJ looked better last night than 2.7 ever did last year (except maybe against WAS). If he can even be average he’ll be a vast improvement on what we had spelling Charles last year.

And every tough first down TJ can get (he got a couple last night) is one less play that Charles has to get hit by three guys.

I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

hope your right

Charles has the chance of being on the top backs in the league. i will be very disappointed if he is not getting the majority of the touches. heck, i hope he is getting at least 70% of the touches. the coaches did say that the team needed more speed last year right???? well don’t leave your fastest player sitting on the bench then.

by kcwolff on Aug 22, 2010 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Are you talking about Dex or Quentin Lawerence???
well don’t leave your fastest player sitting on the bench then.

because both Dex and Quentin Lawrence are faster than Charles.

Go Chiefs!!!!

by ravenhawk on Aug 22, 2010 5:11 PM CDT up reply actions

no charles is faster than both of them

you out your mind? charles is faster than them and he set track records….dex is right behind him though they are damn near neck and neck

by chiefnation on Aug 22, 2010 6:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Quentin Lawrence is the fastest Chief

If he remains a Chiefs.
Charles is probably technically faster than DMC, but I doubt he’s run him down from behind in pads.

by dablueguy on Aug 22, 2010 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions

no, you are false. I googled these results and got them off nfl.com

www.nfl.com/goto?id=09000d5d807a7526
5. Jamaal Charles, Texas
Height: 5-11 Weight: 207
College stats: 17 starts, 533 carries, 3,328 yards, 36 TDs; 49 receptions, 3 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.38 40-yard dash

McCluster’s 4.58 official time in the 40-yard dash.
Quentin Lawrence 4.42 official time in the 40-yard dash…….I know dmc is faster than that, he must off had an off run….he did do really well in all the other combine stats….but like i said, charles is the fastest and this proves it

by chiefnation on Aug 22, 2010 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Jamaal Charles also has

Posted the nation’s fastest indoor times in the 55 and 60-meter dash i … Led Northeast High School to the 2A state title in the spring of 2005 by winning the 100 and 200 meters … Was also second in the state meet in the long jump … Has been clocked at 4.27 seconds in the 40-yard dash …

There is a difference between fast and quick.

Dex is among the quickest players I have ever seen on a football field. Don’t get me wrong, he’s extremely fast. But, it’s his ability to make crazy breaks at full speed that set him apart (and breaks shoes!). He is not faster than Charles, but he is quicker.

by whoadog on Aug 22, 2010 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I've seen Lawrence notes as a 4.2 guy

I remember when we drafted him, it said that was his time before he got injured in his senior year.

by dablueguy on Aug 22, 2010 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions

you must not remember right

unless you are saying he is faster than chris johnson now. johnson runs a 4.24

by chiefnation on Aug 23, 2010 6:29 PM CDT up reply actions

you can see the coaches minds working.

You can see the obvious difference between the things they wanted to work on in game 1 as opposed to game 2. Game 3 will be the closest thing we will see to the gameplan for monday night

by RamX21 on Aug 22, 2010 2:28 PM CDT reply actions

Hey Joel

You gonna do a report on Brandon Albert? I thought the dominated all game!

by masonsixer on Aug 22, 2010 2:42 PM CDT reply actions

his run blockings

looking really good. it seems like he gets to the second level a lot and puts a body on a linebacker which gives JC a huge amount of wiggle room

by Walshdollar on Aug 22, 2010 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Bewsf, and kalophoenix...

will do an extremely in depth report on the offensive and defensive lines. I’m guessing we will see that come Monday or so….

Go Chiefs!!!!

by ravenhawk on Aug 22, 2010 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm excited to read those.

I thoroughly enjoyed them last week. But guys, was I the only one that thought Albert just dominated last week? He didn’t let anyone anywhere close to Matt and he continued to show his impressive run blocking

by masonsixer on Aug 22, 2010 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Who is better

Marion Barber or Felix Jones? Thomas Jones or Jamal Charles? These guys Compliment Eachother I think the coaching staff is doing 2 things right now. One, they said that they are going to go with who has the hot hand. I think most people will say that is charles. Two I think they are trying to get Thomas Jones plenty of game time reps with the 1rst team since those are the people he will be playing with. The coaches know that Charles is the star. Everyone knows that. Its not a secret. But I think they don’t want Charles running 25 plays a week either. Probably around 15 and TJ 10. I for one am ok with that.

Smile, its the second best things you can do with your lips!

Who are the top 5 backs for the Chiefs excluding McCluster?

Here are mine in no particular order:

Charles
Jones
Castille
Cox
Battle

Who makes the final cut?

by ChiefConcern on Aug 22, 2010 3:46 PM CDT reply actions

My 5 backs are

1.) Charles
2.) Jones
3.) Battle
4.) Cox
5.) Castille

Battle will be a good short yardage & redzone back. He could get those tough yard

by BGayles1 on Aug 22, 2010 5:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm going to go out on a limbe here...

1.) Charles
2.) Jones
3.) Battle
4.) Moore
5.) Castille

I believe next year Moore can be pushed to the top 2 or 3 if he continues to train like he has been.

Go Chiefs!!!!

by ravenhawk on Aug 22, 2010 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Cox is a Longshot to make the Team

Castille does more, and Battle is a big back also. Cox is a one dimensional blocking FB, and with DMC, and 2 TE sets, I doubt we’d be using a stricly blocking FB much.

by dablueguy on Aug 22, 2010 8:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Cox caught a first down pass in Tampa.

Disagree he is one dimensional. He has very good hands and is a gamer. Castille looks faster and bigger to me and also catches the ball very well. IMHO, fullback is the toughest call come cut day. It will come down to who is performing better on special teams.

by whoadog on Aug 22, 2010 10:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I dunno...

I was ranking them on whom I believe is the best rb’s we currently have. Moore really hasn’t produced in an actual game yet. So ranking him above Castille could be premature. I do believe that Castille is the better of the 2 fullbacks that we have.

With that all said I expect to see Moore on the PS (if he clears waivers). Then both Cox and Castille make the team. We should see here pretty soon, but that is my guess.

Go Chiefs!!!!

by ravenhawk on Aug 22, 2010 11:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Excluding mcclister...

I would say
Charles
jones
Moore… I really like what Khestan more has done in Camp and against ATL.
Battle
castille
cox

Keeping two FB's?

Both of the above have Cox and Castille making it – I know we carried both of them last year but wasn’t Castille hurt so we had to keep Cox?

I’m just not sure that we end up keeping two FB’s. I guess we’ll see soon enough.

by Ochophosphate on Aug 22, 2010 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

With McCluster on the team able to play RB....

KC may opt to try to move both Moore and Williams to the PS and keep Charles, Jones and Battle instead of 4 RBs. That would free them up to keep both FBs.

by whoadog on Aug 22, 2010 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Where can I replay the game?

Is there a site that I can go to to rewatch the game? I don’t have Tivo and I didnt get to watch the whole thing last night.. Please help me!!!!!!!!!!

by Ryansw2413 on Aug 22, 2010 4:10 PM CDT reply actions

going to be tough decision between Battle and Moore

i bet those two are going to get a lot of carries in the final 2 preseason games

dunno how many fullbacks they will keep, i imagine they will cut Cox but tell him to stay by the phone

wide receiver will be an interesting positional battle as well

by Home skillet on Aug 22, 2010 4:23 PM CDT reply actions

I'd keep Battle over Moore easily

More vs. Williams is more of a close call – they’re also built about the same.

The great thing about Battle is he’s huge – not quite Brandon Jacobs huge, but he’s a big, fast back. He’s a great variation to have available.

Moore and Williams are very similar in size, Moore might be a better receiver and a little faster. I think we let Williams walk and keep Moore, maybe see if we can slip him on the practice squad. Jones, Charles and Battle will be the 3 active HBs for the most part.

by Ochophosphate on Aug 22, 2010 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Between Moore and Williams

Keep whoever pass blocks and plays special teams better. They’re not gonna be taking many hand offs anyways. These guys need to be judged based on how they do all the other stuff that 3rd stringers do. Besides, our top 4 RBs are essentially Charles, Jones, McCluster, Battle. Whether Moore/Williams are good runners is irrelevent. Who is better at kick coverage and picking up the blitz on a third down situation is far more important. And though I didnt get a chance to watch Williams play yet, I wasn’t impressed with Moore picking up the pass rush against ATL.

...And as the roar of 80,000 red-clad great plains warriors fills the hallowed halls of Arrowhead, it will strike fear into the hearts of lesser men. For on that field, individual men toil for something greater than individual honors. They toil as brothers-in-arms, as 53 spirits striving towards a single purpose and driven by a single goal: The glory that comes with vanquishing your foes. They will achieve their birthright, they will be champions.

the new regime doesn't look too kindly upon injuries

or releasing any info whatsoever unless they absolutely have to..

and the Chiefs put the HAMMER DOWN!!!!

by reedeasy on Aug 22, 2010 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I Think in this case

They will release any info that’s available, and won’t use that withholding info card.

I couldn't be happier with ...

Our RB situation as it stands right now. IMO we have arguably the best running back tandem in the NFL right now, for SURE the best tandem in the AFC West.

The more I think about it the more sense it makes to let T.J start during the preseason as we all know what J.C is capable of. No reason to risk injury to the next Chris Johnson during some BS preseason game.

I was also very impressed with Jackie Battles game against Tampa Bay. He could have just tried to run over the DB but instead showed good decision making in hurdling him instead. That’s a good way to extend your NFL career. Rather than taking a big hit, be smart ( something LJ knew nothing about. )

I’d like to see J.B continue to improve as T.J. won’t be around forever, he’s pushing 32yrs old if I’m not mistaken ?

Don't run pussy, you'll just die tired !!

by Bloody Palms on Aug 23, 2010 2:12 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah I'd like to see Battle take over when Jones hangs it up

He’s showing a lot of quick decision making ability, and good hard quick cuts.

I was pleasantly surprised by Battle this weekend.

Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
