Chiefs Vs. Bucs Preseason: Connor Barth And Ryan Succop Again

On July 28, 2009, the Kansas City Chiefs waived kicker Connor Barth. The Chiefs had just drafted kicker Ryan Succop in the seventh round of the draft three months earlier so many thought Succop would eventually win the job.

But they didn't think the Chiefs would go into training camp with no competition for Succop.

We all know how things turned out. Succop had a very impressive rookie year and Barth packed his bags and departed Kansas City.

Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com had a story this morning that reminded us that the Chiefs will once again see Connor Barth, who is now in Tampa Bay with the Buccaneers. He's battling Hunter Lawrence at kicker for playing time.

It's "just" the kicker position, but the Chiefs decision to release Barth before training camp last year brought on quite a reaction by many of you.

It's an interesting time for Barth's name to be brought back up because Succop missed two field goals in the Chiefs first preseason game. Some have wondered what's up but I think many agree that two 53-yard field goals can't be considered a lock. He missed a couple last year in preseason as well and things turned out OK.

Wish we still had Tynes.

Anyone who hits up G-Dub for a presidential pardon for a little weed is cool with me.

Politics aside, Obama would of better been served, buying 5 "new" football teams.

can I say something silly?

I miss watching Tyler Thigpen. Bones was definitely one of my favorites.

Dear Alex Gordon:

I still think you will be awesome, but for the love of God, please stop getting hurt.

Sincerely,

RF

Nothing silly about that

Bones has a special place in the heart of all Chiefs fans.

Trifecta Thigpen

He’ll be in the Chiefs record books for awhile, I expect, as the only quarterback to run, pass and catch a touchdown in the same season, and possibly the only one with a career trifecta.

even though I definitely prefer succop,

I’m glad barth is doing well, I’ll always remember how at river falls when he, colquitt, brody and a few other guys were signing after practice and some guys gave their shoes and gloves and stuff away and this little girl was upset cause she just missed getting one of colquitt’s shoes so barth bends down and asks her if she’d want one of his. she says yes, but he had already given his away so he ran all the way back from the main practice field to the locker room and brought back a signed red cleat. (and if you guys are familiar with RF that’s pretty far)

Agree. I hoped he would latch on somewhere.

As I recall, it was a hell of a competition that off-season. Barth and Succop both like and pushed each other, and their accuracy numbers were close.

Leg strength won the job for Ryan — and man it was refreshing seeing kickoffs in the end zone again. Tynes drove me crazy with short kickoffs.

hopefully we won't have much need for succop, other than kicking about 30, 35 PATs.

I would imagine, and hope that his FG attempts and distance will go down as the offense improves.

yeah honestly how many times do you see a kicker even attempt 3 kicks over 50? its pretty rare...let alone make them.

saw morten do it back in 95(i think)…it was in a dome, and people were blown away.

those misses last week didnt bother me one bit

And the thing is

Even with the two 53 yard attempts – he had plenty of leg on them. Nuked the hell out of it, distance-wise.

So yeah, I’m not really that concerned either.

oh, I'm not worried about it.

and watching the Pats and Falcons the other night, noticed that their kickers were missing field goals wide.

if he does it during the regular season, then i’ll worry….because he may end up a big part of our scoring offense.

I'm not worried about Succop. He'll be fine.

It will be interesting tonight. Gerald McCoy, whom several here wanted the Chiefs to get will be playing and didn’t do to bad last week. I’ll be watching to see how well the Chiefs D handles him.

Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...

Mitch, Len and Stats

Pretty much the only way I too can ‘see’ the Chiefs – unless they’re scheduled against the Jets, Giants or Pats.

Which stats feed do yoiu use – NFL.com, cbssports.com or ESPN.com? Each of they’re gameday formats have different appeal.

by Dan-NY on Aug 21, 2010 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah they do all have different pros and cons...I typically swap to the one with the least amount of lag.

fortunately with sunday ticket this only happens a couple times a year.

if they had just played the game on sunday morning as first planned, I could make that.

And as Stag said,

I trust that they got their guy, and it can’t be called a "stupid move" until they are proven wrong

I think they got their guy and it wasn’t a stupid move, and haven’t been proven wrong. Way to go stag :) lol

favre isn't a priority.

this is preseason, so stats don’t matter.

which means there is no reason to give him a national audience to watch him pad his interception stats…..
