Chiefs Training Camp: Recapping The First Day Back From Atlanta
Here's a quick look at Sunday's practice, where about 3,600 fans showed up. That would be one of the larger single day crowds yet. It's also the first practice since the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Atlanta Falcons Friday night.
Not participating in practice: G Darryl Harris, OT Barry Richardson, G Jon Asamoah, TE Tony Moeaki and TE Jake O'Connell. RB Kestahn Moore and Jon McGraw participated in individual drills.
I believe that's the biggest number (7) the Chiefs had at training camp so far.
Josh Looney, KCChiefs.com:
Though the Chiefs had a camp-high seven players miss practice time in the rehab zone today, the rest of the team ran through a number of team drills to work on some of Friday’s problem areas. Blitz pick-up, perimeter play-action and Red Zone work were all points of emphasis Sunday afternoon.
The KC Star has a nice rundown of practice as well.
The most newsy item may be that Casey Wiegmann ran with the first team over Rudy Niswanger.
Check out the full report at KCChiefs.com and the KC Star.

Was at camp yesterday
Took the Road Glide from the city up to St Joe. Really enjoyed the weather, ride and practice. The Chiefs have great facilities there. Looked for Joel, but no cigar. One question. There was a drill where both the complete offense and defense lined up at the offense’s 20. At the snap, the quarterback spun around and fired the ball at the goalpost behind him. Cassel hit the pad on the post, Palko did not. Cassel got lots of cheers from the team and Palko received a bunch of moans. Does anybody know the purpose of this drill?
weird
Maybe it has to do with trusting your OL and concentrating on the pass?
A good article for AP would be descriptions of all these drills they are doing. I find the Johnny on the Spot toss, the trashcans in the corner of the end zone, and what you describe really interesting. I bet there are a ton more.
Good idea for an article. Did you read this, Joel?
Most of the other drills yesterday were fairly typical. But some caught my eye. One entertaining drill involved two D lineman against two O lineman going head to head on stunts. They were really banging away with lots of intensity. Can’t say either side dominated the other, but it was fun to watch. Also, saw the special team gunners practice downing punts at the goal line. The jugs machine launched the ball, the returner waved for a fair catch and then got out the way. The gunners tried to keep the ball out of the end zone.
I saw that too
It almost seemed like they were in a victory formation, I was confused but I didn’t know if it was just a contest or if they were actually practicing for something.

Lokey and Studebaker
I’ve been away from the computer all week and I scanned all the posts about the preseaons game. I didn’t see anyone post anything about Studebaker and Lokey. I thought both held their own very well. What were your thoughts?
Studebaker, I thought, was hands-down the best defender on the field.
The Chiefs will see a return to respectability in 2010, emerging as the front runner in the AFC West! ....And I'll quantify that however I choose. Ahem.

Andy Studebaker received reps with the first-team defense throughout practice.
Offense/Defense tie 1-1
1) Dexter McCluster gets past Javier Arenas and Matt Cassel finds him in the back left corner of the end zone for a TD. McCluster was lined up in the slot, while Arenas played man coverage from the nickel.
2) Cassel looks for McCluster on a nearly identical play, except this time to the back right corner of the end zone. Arenas covered McCluster like a blanket on this try and the pass fell incomplete.
Love it. Little 5’8" Dexter getting calls in the redzone, and Studebaker getting 1st team reps that he surely deserved after his showing in our first preseason game.

I still want this to happen every time Studebaker takes the field or makes a play
Whole crowd slow caps and chants “STUUU-DEE! STUUU-DEE!”
Instead, it’ll probably just be me doing it as the only guy in the sports bars around Nashville which may get me straight-jacketed. But it’ll be so worth it.
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
