Chiefs Vs. Falcons Preseason: The Last Time They Played
The last time the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons played it wasn't pretty.
Back on Sept. 21, 2008 in the Georgia Done, the Falcons jumped out to a 24-0 lead -- remember Tyler Thigpen starting this game? -- and ended up winning the game 38-14.
It was one of those confirmations that the Chiefs weren't very good at the time. Here's what Chris had to say about the game nearly two years ago:
The offense looked pathetic but at least this game helped re-focus the problem on the QB.
I don't know what else to say anymore. I guess you could say the Chiefs made some progress from last week so maybe that was rock bottom?
Little did he know.
Things will be much different this time around -- at least with the players on the field. Gone is Larry Johnson, the leading rusher in that game, and back is Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones. Gone is Tyler Thigpen, the leading passer in that game, and in is Matt Cassel. And then there's the leading receiver, Dwayne Bowe, who very well could be the leading receiver once again.
Here's the box score from that game. Anything catch your eye...other than the third quarterback being the starter?

I vote this game as the lowest.
You make a good arguement.
I still gotta throw the pounding we took from the Chargers at Arrowhead up there somewhere too.

DT jersey retirement last season
Broncos crushing us at home, the lowest point in my life except when they told me they were going to cut my arm off. I got to keep the arm, and the memory of that defeat forever.

Uh yeah...you beat me with that one!
Doc: Sorry jrcnc, gonna have to take your arm
jrcnc: okay Doc, as long as the Chiefs beat the Broncos
Doc: Sorry jrcnc, can’t do it

The Falcons, Panthers and Bills games about did me in that year
In the Bills game we had an offense, but we probably played the worst defensively I’ve ever seen. That Indianapolis playoff game where we didn’t force the Colts to punt was bad, but the Bills weren’t a team noted for offensive prowess. As tough as some of those games were last year, ‘08 was the worst year I’ve ever had as a Chiefs fan.

I remember thinking it was one of the few "winnable" games going into that season
who knew…
Predictions:
This year will be better
14 fro 36? and 3 INT's? I don't remember Thiggy as being capable of something THAT bad.

I do remember beating Atlanta 56-10 in 2004 though!

Anybody else find it weird that this game was our last in a dome ?
We played all of last season outdoors.

Rebuilding job #12 is now fully underway
In a league where 27% of the teams make the postseason every year, wouldn’t you think that by random chance the Royals would make it at least a once in a 25 year span?

This year will be better
damn bro that sucks
that stuff is dangerous, glad you are alright.

Running back stats are interesting
If you take LJ’s 48 yard rush out of the equation, he averaged less than 3.2 ypc, while Charles was sitting over there at nearly 5.5… why did it take us so long to start him, that baffles me to this day.

Yeah but Vaughn has also never had back to back 1700 yrd seasons...
Which is why he was so rediculously paid. I’ve never seen a player quit that badly after signing a huge contract, short of perhaps Jamarcus Russell… but even he was an unproven rookie, LJ was a 2 time pro-bowler just the two seaons prior to dropping off.

one of the worst Chiefs QB performances ever
amazing how Thigpen turned it around for the Jets game later that year. I was bracing for the worst, then he turned around his career and looked liked a legit QB.
Wasn't that more due to Chain Galey...
I thought they dumbed down the playbook in order to help him out?

I don't know that he dumbed it down as much as change it to play to Tyler's strengths
The Arrowspread came into vogue.

Sadly though...
it was more vague than vogue.

That game was pretty damn horrible.
The 1 thing that sticks out to me was Michael Turner just dragging guys down the field. Damnit.
I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin.
to me the stats show this was a winable game
I do remember watching this one. It was truely painful, everytime we got something going on offence Tyler threw a pick. Our defense got ran over by the Atlanta Offense. Had wa held on to the ball, it would have been a shootout. Not saying we would win, but at least not get killed.
Wasn’t Mike Solari the Offensive Coordinator for this one? I remember him, very imaginative.
