Let me think.... The Dexter and Arenas ooooorrrr.....

…. a NT who is going to get put on his ass every snap……

Gee what ever will we do without him?

Word.

Dexter and Arenas were 2nd rounders

Thomas was a 5th.
Not even close to the same thing.

Everyone EVERYONE wanted a NT, and his name was the one that always came up in the 3rd/4th round, and now that he’s a Charger, he’s gonna suck?

ARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.

I'm on a horse.

I don't recall ever being excited about Cam Thomas....

And it is kinda the same thing because the Chiefs (or anyone else for that matter) could have taken Cam in the second round… hell alot of people thought he might go in the 1st!

I wanted a NT but the guy I wanted is playing for Baltimore. Cody was the ONLY NT that I was interested in from this draft.

Sure there were some late rounders who went early that I thought would be nice additions, Troup and Joseph, but the didn’t fall where we thought they might and Cam did.

I won’t lose a second of sleep over Cam Thomas.

Word.

I was OK with Shaun Smith, actually...

Specifically because of the BRC’s reasoning. A rookie NT isn’t going to provide any more of an impact than a FA acquisition would.

The Chiefs will see a return to respectability in 2010, emerging as the front runner in the AFC West! ....And I'll quantify that however I choose. Ahem.

It’s not that he’s a Charger, it’s that Pioli and Crennel (two of the best d-line evaluators in the league) decided not to draft him that tells me he’s not going to be fantastic.

I don't think it's a given that Pioli and Crennel are two of the best

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

It’s pretty damn rare to spend three first round picks in 5 years on the three defensive linemen in a 3-4 and hit on all of them (not just avoid a bust, but hit and end up with a great player each time)

I think the combination of Wilfork, Warren, and Seymour was a huge contributor to the Patriots’ dynasty

Actually, they whiffed on Marquise Hill

But I guess my point is that these guys weren’t necessarily the ones calling the shots. BB had primary control of drafts.

Well he definitely won't get any love from us as a Charger.

Exactly

AJ Smith has a proven history of drafting well, and I think Cam Thomas will be no exception. However, I definitely still have my “Gee, I sure hope Pioli knows what he’s doing, because I’m trusting in him” hat on.

Someone, I’m not sure who, complimented me on it recently, but apparently thought that it was meant to convey a positive appraisal of Atlas Shrugged. Hmm.

He wasn't all that impressive against College O-Line

He a developmental guy, he may coach up to be a decent NT, but no better chance than others. The Georgia boys are probably the “steals” at that position Weston & the other guy.

Get used to hearing it... in such ways as:

“Cam Thomas totally wiffed that tackle.”
“Cam Thomas could do nothing but watch as Charles flew by.”
“Good thing the Chiefs didn’t draft Cam Thomas.”
“Cam Thomas just looks lost out there.”
“TOUCHDOWN KAN-SAS-CITY!!!” Okay that says nothing about Thomas but he will be hearing it alot.

by BigRedChief on Jul 9, 2010 2:34 PM CDT reply actions

What kind of sense does that make?

Basically the underlying message of that statement would be that anyone taken the 5th or later has an issue. Uh, maybe, but that’s why they’re all in the 5th or later, or undrafted. The key is finding the guys who represent good value there, and Thomas represents potentially excellent value because of his high ceiling.

The overwhelming division favorite SD Chargers are worse at the NT position than we are, depending on a 5th round draft choice to start.
The overwhelming division favorite SD Chargers are depending on a rookie RB to be their workhorse.
The overwhelming division favorite SD Chargers are going to be without their #1 WR for at least 3 games.
The overwhelming division favorite SD Chargers are going to be without their star LT for at least the beginning of the season.
The overwhelming division favorite SD Chargers are going to get their butts whipped on opening nite.

Couldn't one really poke even worse holes in the Chiefs' roster?

I mean, KC has a weak offensive line (until proven otherwise), a weak defensive line (until proven otherwise), an average pair of starting WRs with no established depth (until proven otherwise), a fragile set of TEs with potential, an average QB, a weak defensive line (until proven otherwise), a weak linebacker corps (until proven otherwise), and an average defensive backfield (one good corner, one average corner, one rookie corner, and average safeties).

Basically, KC has a great pair of running backs, and no other team strengths.

I don't mean to be hostile, I'm sorry.

Alot of what I say is “tongue-in-cheek” and maybe doesn’t come off that way. This blatant homerism is killing me though. There is a huge difference in expressing your fandom and going over the top. I’m not looking at squashing optimism, I’m optimistic too, but some of the things I hear people say just shake my head. What really makes me upset is that we are losing far too many good posters because of this nonsense.

I have to laugh at the irony of the Kool-aid fad that is around here lately. Wasn’t Kool-aid something that was drank by hundreds of followers who blindly followed their leader without hesitation, only to have stricnine in it? I’m not saying Pioli is going to be Jim Jones and kill us all, but a little objectivity would probably be a good thing. Pioli isn’t above reproach, and has made SEVERAL bad decisions in his day. AJ Smith has been a much more successful GM than Pioli (so far) but somehow Cam Thomas is going to be bad because Smith drafted him, not Pioli? Child Please.

I'm on a horse.

by craig in calgary on Jul 9, 2010 4:29 PM CDT up reply actions

To be clear I think Cam Thomas sucks because I think he sucks.

And the fact that he is a Charger is the secondary reason that he sucks but combine the two and that is a whole lotta sucking going on. I didn’t like the guy in the draft and I don’t like the guy now which allows me to be fully confident that Pioli and Co. made the right decision of not grabbing him.

It has nothing to do with A.J. Smith. In fact I am in total agreement that he is one of the premire “talent evaluators” in the leauge. A.J.’s problem, the problem that has cost him a ring or two imo, is his ego.

I seriously started questioning the moves Pioli makes… for the most part, and I was furious when we passed on Cody…. still kinda stings a little. I also think we made a mistake not finding someone to fill the NT position though I think Shaun Smith will be a decent addition.

This Kool Aid thing got WAY more out of control with the whole Berry thing…. so much so that I can admit that I tuned out AP for a while (like an hour). The most frusterating thing was the piling on when someone went against the Berry grain **cough**Dez Bryant**cough**, it was maddening.

I’ve just noticed lately that you’ve been pretty cold to some of the Kool Aid drinkers… which is very unlike you. Just wondering what was up with ya. Seems like the content on AP has been struggling lately but I think it’s because we had SO MUCH going on for a stretch that this is the letdown from the high and some are still chasing it.

Holy crap, has the season started yet?

Word.

I am confused

How many posters are we losing Craig?
DTR voiced the same before he left.
Satchmo not so much but he left.
What exactly is wrong here that some take off?
I don’t see it. Patrick got a new gig cause of his posting.
We can all call foul on people cause we think something good is going to be posted cause no one is posting. Check The San Diego Blog.
The fan Posts are for Fan’s to post just like you :) Good stuff gets recognized and if all realize what the Rec is then they stay around. Just like yours. Many commenters here never post a fanpost or a fanshot.
Texas Chief? minimal. Craig? minimal. Are we waiting for those fantastic posts? NO, we all give it it a try to keep the convo going. We all give the inspiration to you all’s fantastic posts. So don’t give me the DEAD HORSE it prevents excellent posts :) I wish typing was effortless

The "kool-aid" expression is ridiculous

I’d wager that most people who use it don’t even use it correctly, and it’s as annoying as those idiotic “epic win” or “epic fail” comments. Stupid f&*<ing internet memes!

Anyway, I tend to agree with most of what you’ve said, except that AJ Smith has been more successful. Pioli wasn’t a true GM in New England, but he essentially served in the executive parts of that position, and they had great success under him.

But yeah, as far as being the actual GM, I guess you’re technically correct—the best kind of correct.

Sure, but we’re not The overwhelming division favorite. SD has some very, very serious holes, and they are extremely ripe for the taking, both on opening night, and for the season. And I think both Oakland and the Chiefs are prime candidates to do that taking.
I know if the Chiefs were depending on a 5th round draft choice who plunged down the boards, to be their starting NT, we would not be confident in the position.
I know if the Chiefs were depending on a rookie RB, we should be worried.
I know if Bowe was out for most of the season, we should be worried.
I know if albert was going to be out for some, if not most, of the season, we should be worried.

by dablueguy on Jul 9, 2010 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Rookie RB

You know very well that RB is one of the best positions to have to start a rookie, right? There’s probably not a better one, in fact. And KC’s depending on a rookie at a position that typically is less conducive to starting a rookie: free safety.

KC is in worse shape than San Diego. But the whole division looks like a crap sandwich right now.

Well...

I think our fifth round picks will overall become better players. Kendrick lewis has a chance to start this year, and Cameron Sheffield could become a pass rushing specialist. So the chargers can suck it when Kendrick lewis picks off rivers, and cam thomas gets knocked on his ass on MNF.

by TheKCChief on Jul 9, 2010 4:48 PM CDT reply actions

Very much disagree that Lewis will have a chance to start

I’m hopeful for Sheffield, but Lewis has a lot of experienced guys to overcome, particularly if Page shows up. Berry seems like a lock, but Lewis isn’t a guy who has the speed to overcome some of his experience. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Well if page signs..

by the beginning of the season, then he would probably start next to berry, but if Kendrick is good enough to start if Page isn’t there then I would call him a great value pick in the fifth round. The more starting caliber players the better.

definitely agree, as long as it's due to impressive play by the rookie...

No.

We won’t be missing Cam Thomas at all. Even if he turns out to be good, Pioli still made the proper move. He had a guy that fit in one of his negative categories (reportedly has very poor work ethic) and so he avoided him. It is too risky. Pioli just needs to continue to stick with his blueprint for success and we will end up with quality players at ALL the positions.

by KCChiefsfan75 on Jul 9, 2010 5:54 PM CDT reply actions

Yes.

If Sheffield does not pan out, people are going to hate that we did not get him. We all know we needed a NT, however we also needed future OLB and that’s why we went Sheffield. I think we will NOT regret getting Kendrick Lewis over Cam Thomas though.

Here is something we also have to consider. We do NOT know what the Chiefs scouts are planning up for 2011. Maybe they have their eyes set on a NT next year and the organization is satisfied for the time being with the NTs they have in shop.

NEVER KNOW, but I think we could regret not taking this guy. Hope I am wrong!
