Chiefs Attend Harvey Unga's Workout, Have Met With Him Twice

We've passed along a few reports over the past few weeks that the Chiefs were interested in former BYU running back Harvey Unga, who has put his name in the hat for the supplemental draft on July 15.

Now we hear from DraftInsider.net that the Chiefs are indeed interested. So much so that they've already met with him twice.

The Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Kansas City Chiefs, Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Bucs and Houston Texans were just a few of the two dozen teams on hand.

Chicago and Kansas City have shown the most interest in Unga to this point.

The Bears flew him to Chicago before the workout and the Chiefs "already met privately with Unga on two different occasions."

Unga weighed in at 244 pounds and stands 6'1" so it's fairly clear the Chiefs are interested in him as the big back to complement Jamaal Charles. Maybe the sort of role Thomas Jones is expected to fill in 2010.

The feeling as of now, according to DraftInsider.net, is that Unga will be a late round pick.

I realize this answer is just a Google search away, but it's summer and I'm lazy.

If team A bids a 5th rounder and team B bids a 4th, team B gets him. What happens if team A and team B bid a 4th (or 5th)?

They go by draft slot from the previous season

So if the Bucs bid a fifth, and the Chiefs bid a fifth, Bucs get him

Its a semi-lottery system

The league divides teams into three catagories. (<6 win teams, 6> wins but didnt make the playoffs, playoff teams) Then the your order in these tiers are determined by record alone. It basically guarentees the team with the worst record will get the first shot at supplemental picks.

What about FB

Does anyone know, can he block?

by 63gump on Jul 8, 2010 3:43 PM CDT reply actions

Not sure on the blocking part but he has good hands out of the backfield

With his frame he should be able to at least learn to throw his body into someone to slow them down. Add in the running and catching.. he seems pretty solid.

Not being able to block hasn't effected Mike Cox's starting role.

I’m wondering if this guy would be an upgrade over Jackie Battle or Keshtahn Moore. They’re all big guys with athletic ability. If we can get him for a 5th or 6th I say go for it. Otherwise, I’m fine with the backs we already have. Let Battle learn the FB position and have Cox play behind him.

he can be that RB/FB/TE hybrid guy

drop a 4th in the hat for this kid. He can block too

In modern NFL football, a FB should not be drafted before the 7th round. If this kid is a great FB prospect, bid a 7th but no higher.

by dablueguy on Jul 8, 2010 3:55 PM CDT reply actions

Doesn't sound like a FB
The general consensus at the workout is teams are looking at the 244-pound Unga as a ball carrier rather than a lead blocker.

by Joel Thorman on Jul 8, 2010 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Is it possible they're just doing their due diligence ?

Making sure they have all the info they want on him in case he doesn’t get picked by anyone? Maybe letting him know they’d be interested if he’s available after the draft so they have a slight edge on other interested teams?

by bh13 on Jul 8, 2010 4:04 PM CDT reply actions

I hope we nab the guy

He could be just like thomas jones down the line.. With battle, charles, and unga heading into the future we’ll have a pretty dangerous running game

you can never have too many good RBs

or too many good DBs
or too many good OL
or too many good LBs
or too many good DL

but, really, having depth at RB is key because of injuries.

I wouldn’t be opposed to KC spending a 5th rounder on this guy, keep building the backfield for the future

Watched his highlights

Just didn’t see anything special, he’s a big back playing against average to below average competition. Playing in the NFL guys just as big or bigger, running just as fast or faster, I don’t think he’ll do anything special. Big backs are usually successful in college, rarely does it transition to the pros

by RamX21 on Jul 8, 2010 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

.

speed isnt enough to be a good back, you gotta be able to run between the tackles to even be able to use it and big backs are the best at running between the tackles. In the NFL especially, unplugged gaps close up much faster than in college.

No

Shifty backs are the best at running up the middle, you’re 100% right gaps close faster in the nfl thats why you need a fast guy to hit the hole or be able to make a move if someone does close the hole. Big backs generally put their heads down, run into the backs of their lineman, get 3 yards, and have generally short careers.

by RamX21 on Jul 8, 2010 6:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually,

It all depends on your blocking scheme. If you are zone blocking then a shifty back will be able to exploit cutback lanes and the movement of the linemen. In a power blocking scheme, you can let a big back run downhill and break arm tackles and grab yards after contact.

Or you can do it the way KC has done and utilize a combination of the two to keep a defense off-balance.

If Unga were to end up here, he would have the best mentor in the league in Thomas Jones

Both backs don’t have impressive speed so they make their living with 5 yard runs between the tackles. I hope Jones would be able to impart some of his workout ethic on Unga. This team needs a young power back, and I think Harvey has a big upside.

Keshtahn Moore?

The kid is bigger than TJ and follows him around like a lost puppy already.

I love the looks of Unga. Not many 244 pound kids outrunning DB’s to the sideline and beyond. He was running over LB’s on the goaline, plus he can cut and juke at full speed. I would be pleased if they surrendered a 4th to get him.

by BigRatt on Jul 8, 2010 5:24 PM CDT reply actions

He runs hard. Definitely wouldn't be a bad pickup for a 4th or 5th rounder, IMO.

Issue is that 4th will be a mid round pick, Hopefully

We can make a little extra of what we have already suffered for by our high draft status this year.
We might be one of the highest offered picks with that 4th. Pioli might also pick up some more 2011 draft picks with the status of many players on this current roster.

and, 2011 should be a very thin draft

given how many underclassmen came out early this year

I wouldn’t lose any sleep if KC got this guy or that DT with a 4th/5th or later.

just means you get part of your draft class almost a full year early, right?

Sounds good

Unga’s story really is a sad reason to be in the Supp Draft.
I also like the Moeaki connection.
Price? is probably more the normal reason players are available.

As far as the 2011 draft I was looking there today trying to figure out who the best players that are Captains on their teams! Then Powe and The Centers available, The WR’s available if some Juniors step out. The QB’s 4 of them maybe 1st rounders.
A 4-7 rounder offered for players this supp draft doesn’t bother me a bit

lol...

The thing about looking at the best players that are team captains is that next year Pioli will change his draft philosophy again to keep his opponents (and fans) guessing.

Last year he picks Jackson and Magee. So this year we were all figuring he ranks positional value over player potential. WRONG. Come the 2011 draft we’ll all be looking at flashy play makers that have high character and he’ll pick a Beast WR with a bit of a nasty streak… not necessarily bad character, but he’ll have slipped in some interview or something. You watch. We’ll all be looking one way and… BAM Pioli’s looking elsewhere.

by Red N Gold Beast on Jul 8, 2010 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, I was thinking that too :(

But the actual need spots should be coming off the board.
IMO, we take that QB in the 1st wherever we pick regardless of HOW Cassel does this year. A Center in the second. Haley does his WR magic. Pioli finds that LB combo.

NT :(
