Chiefs Make Eric Berry Highest Paid Safety In NFL History

The contract numbers are in for Kansas City Chiefs rookie safety Eric Berry and they're big.

Very big.

Per Jason La Canfora of NFL Network, Berry received a six-year contract worth a maximum of $60 million.

That's a $10 million per-year average that I told you they wanted to hit.

The guaranteed portion is $34 million.

The contract makes him the highest paid safety in the history of the NFL.

For a reference, fourth overall pick Trent Williams reportedly received a similar deal but with slightly less than $3 million more in guaranteed dollars.

Welcome to Kansas City, Eric Berry.

He better be...

At 16 games minimum per season over 6 seasons…that’s $625,000 for each 3 hour game.

‘Course that’s not taking into account if the deal gets renegotiated and he goes the length of his contract without any changes.

Or they can dump him after 3 years and add 26 million dollars

to the payroll over the following 3 years. That’s if he doesn’t live up to the 10m per year in terms of value. I’ve seen a lot of very over hyped guys not turn out to be worth anything near their rookie money.

Reggie Bush comes to mind.

There is...

only 3 safetys in the NFL that have the capabilities that Berry projects to have. Polomalu, Reed, and Sanders. Reed is in the twightlight of his career and Sanders has had major injury issues throughout his career. Altough our front 7 is far from complete, the greatest luxury in all of football has to be a game changing safety. He can shut down a WR, stop the run, and put the QB on his ass. Look at the past superbowl winners of this decade. They all have pro-bowl to hall of fame calliber safetys: Sharper, Polomalu, Wilson (when he was playing for money), Sanders, Harrison, Lynch, Milloy, and Woodson. It was a great pick, considering the NFL is changing and the Chiefs seem to be above the curve. I agree that these rookie contracts are stupid, but what are we going to do? Berry was the correct pick.

Nobody wants the picks

You basically can’t trade out of the top 10.

by kcsno56 on Jul 30, 2010 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

The thing is

It’s often very hard to trade down out of a top 5 pick especially these days without getting ridiculously hosed on value.

Because the teams at 11-20 are usually pretty happy where they are (because of the salary drop off).

That could produce what this kid’s capable of? It’s nobodies fault but the NFL, not like the Chiefs WANT to pay that much, but until they get a cap kinda like the NBA, shit happens. And it’s not f**king stupid to have this kid ready to go for the regular season

And the same kind of thing happens in the workforce all the time

I remember coming out of college the group of us had a 3 month ‘training’ orientation, and it got out that we were actually earning more than the trainers who had been with the company for years. It’s no secret that if you want a big salary increase the fastest way to get there is to take a new job.

People change jobs sometimes less than a year into their new ones. Few stay for more than five years unless they’re really skyrocketing. The paradigm of a career in America has become one of changing jobs regularly, as opposed to the one-employer-for-life paradigm that dominated in the 1900s.

It comes with the territory of drafting in the top five every damn year. At least it’s not one of those contracts that jumps out of format like DHB’s did last year, it’s slotted right where it needs to be.

Truth

STEP 1: Develop players that over produce because other selfless role players make them look good
STEP 2: Keep them until they are due for big paydays
STEP 3: Trade to the Raiders (or other team with hapless management) for two 1st round pics
STEP 4: Trade those pics for four second round pics
STEP 5: Draft more awesome players
STEP 6: Repeat until you dominate the NFL for decades

You don’t win by overpaying for free agents, you win by getting overpaid in draft pics for said “free agents” while they are still under club control.

I'm not questioning your fandom...

But you shouldn’t use your monetary donations to the team to make you seem like a super fan that is more valuable than other non paying fans. Believe me, if I could afford to pay for season tickets I’d go. Not everyone is as fortunate as you. Just because you’re a paying fan doesn’t mean non paying fans aren’t allowed to have an opinion on something.

That said, I was just teasing you H2E. I respect your opinion, even though I might disagree with it, at times. I’ve seen your take on the contract negotiations and your attitude toward the front office and the entire NFL corporate world. I don’t even disagree with you on all of those things either.

TOTALLY WORTH IT!!!!!!

Can't Be, The Chiefs are Cheap

Nevermind that Tyson jackson, Dorsey, and Berry are 3 of the highest paid players in the league at their positions, that Cassel has an NFL QB average contract. The Chiefs don’t pay players and are doing things on the cheap.

With 3 top 5 picks from the last 3 years, KC defense better show some improvement.

Been a long time since Chiefs D was elite.

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
