Chiefs GM Cautions Not To Look Too Deeply Into Training Camp Depth Chart

Stay connected for news and updates

Chiefs GM Scott Pioli talked with Bob Fescoe of 610 Sports this morning and has some interesting words about everyone's favorite training camp topic -- the depth chart.

The Chiefs won't release their depth chart on day one but I can guarantee you the first piece of information I'll pass onto you will be who lined up where. From there, we'll start making some wild speculation about starters and backups and so on.

Not so fast, Pioli says.

"Understand that when you have a guy like Jon McGraw," Pioli began, "who's so smart, and knows everything about both safety positions, cornerback positions and where the linebackers are...sometimes it's more important for a younger player, or a less experienced player -- whether it's Kendrick Lewis or Donald Washington, Eric Berry, Reshard Langford or DaJuan Morgan -- to get more reps because Jon knows what to do.

"So, sometimes when you look at people in certain situations, have an understanding of why it appears certain guys are at certain levels in the depth chart. Don't let yourself get fooled all the time."

Even with these words of advice, we'll be fooled tomorrow and make season-long predictions based on one training camp practice.

Hey, we can't help it. It's been far too long since we've seen football in pads.
