Report: Chiefs, Eric Berry 'Close' To A Deal
Jim Wogan of WATE in Knoxville, TN spoke with Chad Speck, agent for Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry, and he reports that Speck says the two sides are "close" to a deal as of late last night.
It's an unusual source for our Chiefs news but it makes sense because it all traces back to Knoxville, TN.
Berry went to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Wogan's station, WATE, is in Knoxville. Speck, Berry's agent, is based out of Knoxville and represents another former Volunteer, Albert Haynesworth.
So it appears the Chiefs may have a shot at getting Berry into camp on time.

did you decide onion rings or fries yet Joel?
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
I wonder if Nick is typing his post up yet?

Joel's taking fries
just saw the tweet over at SBnation KC.

Just noticed your signature. You realize "team to beat" can be taken in more than one way?
"I ain't lyin' 'bout nothin'."
"Oh? So what exactly are you lying about?"
until now no
but thanks for the heads up and it will be changed ummm now!

huh?
being the team to beat can only be taken one way…imo. “The Team to Beat” is the team other teams are gearing up for…not the whipping boy of the division.
Examples..
“The Yankees are defending champions, so by default they are the team to beat.”
“Although the Heat have added James and Bosh, they will admit the Lakers are still the team to beat.”
“Oh those assholes are undefeated?, Yeah they are the theam to beat…”
“Hey the Royals suck balls this year? Yeah they must be the team to beat!”
See it really only works one way.

I really don't think so, in Joel's case.
He works so hard and writes so much, and is getting so much exposure, I do believe there’s a permanent move to NY in Joel’s future. Someone will snap him up and offer him double. Sorry Chiefs fans. It’s only a matter of time, IMO. A few guest appearances on ESPN, and then poof….he is gone.

Good News
You really haven’t heard much from this negotiation. I wonder how much that is the Pioli way of not saying anything or Berry’s agent just working out the deal without making a huge fuss.
Not necessarily a bottom figure...
but we can pretty much guarantee Berry will be making at least 8 million a year… comparing it to Rolando McClain’s contract… Might see a 5 year contract worth 48 mill, and 30 mil guaranteed. At least this is what I’m guessing as the bare minimum.
Rolando McClain LB Alabama 5 years, $40M; $23M G
Go Chiefs!!!!
Yeah, Sanchez was at $10 million/year at No. 5 last year
So I expect the numbers to be similar (even if he was a QB).

I'm looking at a little higher being the absolute cap.

My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:
1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.
I'm wearing my Berry jersey to the Oakland Coliseum next week
Going to the A’s v Royals game. Since the Royals are garbage, I figure it’s time to start rockin’ the Chiefs gear.

no one is there to watch
its just an expensive pre-flight to the Chiefs game, wait Oakland has a guy who threw a no hitter this year, and maybe Greinke (last start 2/3 IP 37 hits 65 runs 893.83 ERA) will pitch!
This is our year.
now watchem trade Greinke to the Yankees for two pitchers, "with front of the rotation potential"
only to watch both of them go up and down from majors to minors, for three years before one of them cracks the rotation as the 5th starter. So predictable.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
yeah, the dodgers proved in the 90's that you can bring up all the talent you want but you need some sort of a base....they had 5 straight rookie's of the year and didnt win a playoff game

~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
but but
Butler does so much for the community, I mean nothing like getting them excited to go to the ball park to see him hit a homerun or anything, but yeah he just does so much for the community like ground in to double plays every at bat, well used to, now that Pods is gone no one will be on in front of him.
This is our year.
I'm sure that was Dayton's logic. Fewer double plays.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
your right
see I have looking at it all wrong.
Have you ever noticed how small all the Royals are compared to any other MLB team? When you just have Butler or Guillen on the Royals pregame they look somewhat big, then they line up next to the Yankees or Red Sox or anyone in the Central and they look like children? If you watch tonight, most of the Orioles lineup is going to look huge compared to the lineup we throw out there.
This is our year.
Watched all of the Yanks/Royal series.
1st game was live, the rest on TV. The Yankee announcers had a lot of good things to say (about Pods).
by NJ Chiefs Fan on Jul 29, 2010 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions
Im bringing this up from a size standpoint
I mean even the 22 or 23 year prospects that magically turn into something other teams throw out there are huge compared to our 28, 29 year old starters that shouldn’t be allowed to hold a bat.
This is our year.
Pods is a fine well-rounded ballplayer.

and former Royal.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
So the long and the short of it, is that we had an all-star catcher
and potentially an all-star right fielder and .300 hitting lead-off man who led the royals in stolen bases, and we manage to get rid of both of them, for…..two minor league nobodies who may never even see the field.

not a baseball fan anymore(was as a kid) but the royals sure seem to just trade away their talent for no good reason
Team Pioli/Haley. Decade of the Chiefs.
Team Colquitt
pods was a good trade
he wasn’t going to be around after this year anyways but everything else pretty much sucks. I say bring Brett, Frank White and Split back, they are still better than anything we are throwing out there now.
This is our year.
Screw Brett.
He’s in this fiasco of an organization collecting a fat paycheck. He obviously cares only about that and not winning.
He was my hero as a kid. ZERO respect now.
Proud to be the biggest NEWB on AP baby!

He's in the perfect position.
His legacy is permanent, and the Royals poor performance year in and year out, does not reflect on him personally in any way.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Quite possibly the worst run team in baseball since EK died
The organization is a joke top to bottom. They are essentially an awful AAAA (Quad-A) team. Awful because it’s not that they lose the talent that the have, but because they can’t even create enough talent to really lose anyone significant. I mean who’s the best player the organization has produced in the past 20 years? Carlos Beltran? It’s amazing anyone still pays to see these clowns.
Predictions:
This year will be better
Well, now they can just blow me.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
It just annoys me because KC used to be such a great baseball town
And now I hear people outside of KC saying how the city shouldn’t even have a team because obviously no one cares about the Royals there. What they don’t grasp is that going a full generation without a playoff appearance will do that to a fanbase. Think about it, many (if not most) of the players on KC’s roster & virtually all of their minor league players were unborn the last time the Royals were in the playoffs. that’s not bad luck, that’s ass-moronic management.
Predictions:
This year will be better
Ned Yost is saying, if you don't think you're in it, your not.
And at the same time Ned is trying to convince fans and the players that they’re not out of the race in the Central, Dayton Moore is throwing in the towel for the year.
Who could see it any other way, including the players.
You’re gonna see a lot of half-assers on the field for the rest of the year.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Well, the first half, I thought they showed some potential.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Now watch, the next thing you know, your gonna see in the trade rumors....
“Royals in the hunt for left fielding lead-off man speedster….so and so”
Makes me sick to my stomach.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Royals front-office is like a bunch of 10 year old kids....
blowing up balloons and then popping them.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
And expecting people to pay to see them do it.
10 + wins in 2010. Chiefs SHOCK the NFL!!! Mark it down.
Well, that's why they fixed up the stadium. It's a public park.
Forget about winning. It’s just a nice public amusement park.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
and yet....strangely....next season.....the hope will start again.
OMG….I hate those assholes.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
do you watch them on tv anymore?
to me it just seems like we are running a team of little leaguers out there, size and height wise. Every team has guys that are huge and can still run around the bases faster than our little big guy in Butler.
This is our year.
I watch em almost every day. I don't know why though.
Can’t forget the 70’s when we rivaled the Yanks.
I know what we should do. Let’s get in full Royals gear during the baseball bat giveaway day at Yankees stadium and scream curses at George Steinbrenner. If that doesn’t work, we’ll do the glass thing.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
No that won't work....they'd feel sorry for us.
I know….Red Sox uniforms….yea…..that’s the ticket.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
I lived in NY for about 18 years.
Never once went to Yankees stadium.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
I will never go to Yankee stadium honestly
Ive been to Citi last year on vacation when they opened it and it was pretty nice.
This is our year.
I had a place in Astoria, Long Island City area
once, and used to hang out on Steinway Street, which ends at Northern Blvd….Shea is just up the block from there. I went to the old Shea once, back when “Nails” and “Mookie Wilson” were the draw.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Kids still live there....
well, their 27 and 31
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Oh...nice....I worked in Forest Hills for awhile, and
lived near 71st and Continental and in Ozone Park. I love Queens.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
we are going to be up in Whitestone
its a pretty nice area, that I wouldn’t mind staying in but we want to buy our own house and yeah we dont have hundreds of thousands of millions of dollars.
This is our year.
and dont want to live in an apartment
going to shack up with the mother in law until all my military disability and stuff kicks in.
This is our year.
I don't blame you. I hope
uncle sam is going to take good care of you.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
upstate is absolutely gorgeous.
I used to take the kids upstate, to the Catskills Game farm. Ride the elephant, feed the animals, so on. They loved getting out of the city for the day. You’re gonna love NY. I couldn’t live upstate though, I’m a city boy through and through.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
It costs practically nothing to live
there, comparatively speaking. But it’s a little too far from the Big A for me.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Just stay away from Jamaica Ave and Queens
Village areas as far as living goes. Do you know where your going to live yet?
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
went to Kew Gardens to get a marriage license
that was about enough for me, and Queens blvd, yeah wont go there.
This is our year.
I was jsut gonna say, if you have to rent a
place in Queens, stay around Elmhurst, Forrest Hills, and Kew Gardens, and near Queens Blvd, and you’ll be fine.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Once you get out to the last stop on the F
train, Jamaica Avenue, it’s a literal madhouse, and can be pretty dangerous.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
I don't recall it.
How far upstate is it?…I’ve been to Fishkill, Danemore, even Clinton, up near Lake Placid…..
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
whitestone is in Queens
close to Flushing, Malba, right under the Whitestone bridge, its a pretty nice area.
This is our year.
Got to bottom of thread
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
I used to follow them very closely
went to every game I could get a ride to when I was a kid. Last year pretty much killed my interest in the team though…unfortunately.
Predictions:
This year will be better
even
with Greinke parting the red seas, curing the bedbug infestion around the world and taking care of wounded and sick puppies in the clubhouse in between innings?
This is our year.
Hey now...
I don’t think your ass is that fat.

Well...."I never".
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Thank you sweetheart.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
ya??? What about him?
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Oh yea....you'r way up North, Queens by the Bronx.
No subways up there though right?
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
I thought you meant upstate NY...your not far from the city there....just have to take a bus to the train station
if you wanna hit the city. i don’t recommend driving to Manhattan. Parking is a fortune, and for 2 bucks, you can grab a train and be anywhere in Manhattan in about 20 minutes or less. Or the preferred way, just flag a cab.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
we just got back a few weeks ago
it was over $50 to park in the garage at South Street Seaport for about 4 hours.
This is our year.
I know...I was a straphanger for years.
But if you just get off near where you want to go…Manhattan is extremely walkable and there’s alot to see along the way.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
im obsessed with the history
I still want to go where Nathaniel Hale was hung, and do a complete Revolutionary War trip.
This is our year.
There's no shortage of it...for sure.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Just get the express bus, that's the best way from there. There's always an express
bus near you. It’s tough to keep a car living in Brooklyn or Queens unless you have a house and garage, and in NY, I was an apartment dweller because a decent house where I lived was a few million. Nothing but brownstones. Keep your car in Whitestone, and you’ll avoid a lot of problems.
It’s no fun to get a boot on your car in Manhattan, and it happened to me so many times. It’s nearly impossible to avoid, because they have it structured to generate revenue, with the “alternate side of the street parking” laws.
You have to constantly re-park your vehicle, and if you don’t …bam …they got ya.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
I mostly worked at 2 World Trade and Rockefeller Center.

~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Aw that makes me miss my City
Moved to Nashville, TN just shy of 3 years ago from NYC.
Used to live in Queens, work in Manhattan (E / F express from Union Turnpike, woo!)
Spent some time working at 75 Rock Ctr. Far cry from TN, for sure. o.O
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
Really...cool....I worked in 30 Rock, for Time Warner Amex, but mostly right across the
street at 1285 6th, Ave of Americas, in The Equitable Center. It’s right across from Radio City.
I do miss the hell out it.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Heh, the last 4 years I was in NYC
I worked for Warner Music Group.
Sort of a cousin to Time-Warner, but WMG was always a separate entity.
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
Theres a lot of Warner and Time companies.
I worked for Time-Warner, Time-Warner Amex Satellite and Amex, in addition to Showtime-TMC, also, CBS, NBC, ABC, Showtime-TMC, and a bunch more. I worked for a Data Processing Ccnsultant firm that specializing in communications companies, so they sent me wherever the contract was. I had a blast.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Much more attractive view from the bus, and you learn something new every time about
getting around….keep your eyes peeled.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Those were the days....
Leaving Rock Plaza with the crew from the office, going over to Rosie O’Grady’s piano bar, and partying till 2 in the morning, then someone get’s a bright idea to go to an after hours club….the next thing you know, it’s time to go to work, and your on the train going home to crash and call in sick, while everyone else is heading the other direction….to work. LOL.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Ya gotta love a city that never sleeps.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Me too. It's an overriding love, not to mention my kids live there still....
I love them too, but the city is a special kind of love. I’ll go back again, it’s a powerful force to be reckoned with. I’m comfortable in KC, but miss NY a lot.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
your right
the first time I went I was 100% amazed. I mean going out to some parts of Long Island around were my wife and I got married looks exactly like parts of Missouri with the trees and landscape. The food, and atmosphere are amazing and ive got nothing but hand shakes and thank you’s from everyone who knows im in the military.
This is our year.
Let me guess....Farmington?
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
I figured either Farmington or Westbury....
I hate to say it, but Westbury I found to be very boring. It’s known for the music fair mainly. People are great but there’s not much going on there. But, it’s a nice quiet place to live, and looks a lot like any suburban neighborhood in south KC, only older.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
That's how I wound up in NY....I was in the Coast Guard on a ship in the Bering Sea
for 2 & 1/2 years, and they wouldn’t transfer me off unless I agreed to go to the Federal Supply Center in Brooklyn’s Bush Terminal, on Toidy Toid and Toid. 33rd and 3rd. I never really left.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
NY that is.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
I just don't know if I wanna go back to work.
Because a move back there would mean going back to work. But then again, that was half the fun of NY, except for the commuting on the trains. That was a complete and total bitch. I need to remember how bad it was to get on a train with a broken AC, and be packed in there sweating for an hour and a half just to get to work. And I had all the anti-hygienists on my train….lol.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
its going to be interesting for me
being a disabled vet I hope I can find some good work out there.
This is our year.
Well that alone, should give you a good leg up.
It’s so easy to get a job in NY it’s pitiful. They say if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere….but it’s just the opposite….if you can’t make it there, you won’t make it anywhere.
Just speaking good English, and having good communications skills, practically guarantees you a job in NY.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Gotta run......talk at ya more tomorrow.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Yeah, the drawback of being a cultural melting pot
Not every culture stresses the wearing of deodorant / brushing of teeth. Not being mean or throwing slander around. It’s just not the norm in every culture.
So getting crammed shoulder to shoulder on a rush hour train in mid-August when the AC does its famous disappearing act next to a guy who doesn’t own a single stick of deodorant and you can smell the very potent BO + Curry-for-dinner-last-night wafting your way is…not delicious.
But man I miss my City.
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
Not to mention that there's was always one homeless guy taking a whole corner
who hasn’t been cleaned in over a year. I’ve seen the worst of the worst. The worstest.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
I feel you. Are we crazy to want to go back? Maybe.
"Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
~Voltaire~ (On his death bed, when asked by a priest to renounce Satan)
Gotta run men....my little neices and nephews are in from Florida ....
and their having a B-day party. Uncle TheK-man has to make an appearance.
