Report: Chiefs, Eric Berry 'Close' To A Deal

Jim Wogan of WATE in Knoxville, TN spoke with Chad Speck, agent for Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry, and he reports that Speck says the two sides are "close" to a deal as of late last night.

It's an unusual source for our Chiefs news but it makes sense because it all traces back to Knoxville, TN.

Berry went to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Wogan's station, WATE, is in Knoxville. Speck, Berry's agent, is based out of Knoxville and represents another former Volunteer, Albert Haynesworth.

So it appears the Chiefs may have a shot at getting Berry into camp on time.

huh?

being the team to beat can only be taken one way…imo. “The Team to Beat” is the team other teams are gearing up for…not the whipping boy of the division.

Examples..

“The Yankees are defending champions, so by default they are the team to beat.”

“Although the Heat have added James and Bosh, they will admit the Lakers are still the team to beat.”

“Oh those assholes are undefeated?, Yeah they are the theam to beat…”

“Hey the Royals suck balls this year? Yeah they must be the team to beat!”

See it really only works one way.

I really don't think so, in Joel's case.

He works so hard and writes so much, and is getting so much exposure, I do believe there’s a permanent move to NY in Joel’s future. Someone will snap him up and offer him double. Sorry Chiefs fans. It’s only a matter of time, IMO. A few guest appearances on ESPN, and then poof….he is gone.

Good News

You really haven’t heard much from this negotiation. I wonder how much that is the Pioli way of not saying anything or Berry’s agent just working out the deal without making a huge fuss.

by Chiefsdad on Jul 29, 2010 11:39 AM CDT reply actions

Not necessarily a bottom figure...

but we can pretty much guarantee Berry will be making at least 8 million a year… comparing it to Rolando McClain’s contract… Might see a 5 year contract worth 48 mill, and 30 mil guaranteed. At least this is what I’m guessing as the bare minimum.

Rolando McClain LB Alabama 5 years, $40M; $23M G

1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.

no one is there to watch

its just an expensive pre-flight to the Chiefs game, wait Oakland has a guy who threw a no hitter this year, and maybe Greinke (last start 2/3 IP 37 hits 65 runs 893.83 ERA) will pitch!

This is our year.

by jrcnc on Jul 29, 2010 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions

now watchem trade Greinke to the Yankees for two pitchers, "with front of the rotation potential"

only to watch both of them go up and down from majors to minors, for three years before one of them cracks the rotation as the 5th starter. So predictable.

but but

Butler does so much for the community, I mean nothing like getting them excited to go to the ball park to see him hit a homerun or anything, but yeah he just does so much for the community like ground in to double plays every at bat, well used to, now that Pods is gone no one will be on in front of him.

your right

see I have looking at it all wrong.
Have you ever noticed how small all the Royals are compared to any other MLB team? When you just have Butler or Guillen on the Royals pregame they look somewhat big, then they line up next to the Yankees or Red Sox or anyone in the Central and they look like children? If you watch tonight, most of the Orioles lineup is going to look huge compared to the lineup we throw out there.

This is our year.

by jrcnc on Jul 29, 2010 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Watched all of the Yanks/Royal series.

1st game was live, the rest on TV. The Yankee announcers had a lot of good things to say (about Pods).

by NJ Chiefs Fan on Jul 29, 2010 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Im bringing this up from a size standpoint

I mean even the 22 or 23 year prospects that magically turn into something other teams throw out there are huge compared to our 28, 29 year old starters that shouldn’t be allowed to hold a bat.

So the long and the short of it, is that we had an all-star catcher

and potentially an all-star right fielder and .300 hitting lead-off man who led the royals in stolen bases, and we manage to get rid of both of them, for…..two minor league nobodies who may never even see the field.

Quite possibly the worst run team in baseball since EK died

The organization is a joke top to bottom. They are essentially an awful AAAA (Quad-A) team. Awful because it’s not that they lose the talent that the have, but because they can’t even create enough talent to really lose anyone significant. I mean who’s the best player the organization has produced in the past 20 years? Carlos Beltran? It’s amazing anyone still pays to see these clowns.

It just annoys me because KC used to be such a great baseball town

And now I hear people outside of KC saying how the city shouldn’t even have a team because obviously no one cares about the Royals there. What they don’t grasp is that going a full generation without a playoff appearance will do that to a fanbase. Think about it, many (if not most) of the players on KC’s roster & virtually all of their minor league players were unborn the last time the Royals were in the playoffs. that’s not bad luck, that’s ass-moronic management.

Just get the express bus, that's the best way from there. There's always an express

bus near you. It’s tough to keep a car living in Brooklyn or Queens unless you have a house and garage, and in NY, I was an apartment dweller because a decent house where I lived was a few million. Nothing but brownstones. Keep your car in Whitestone, and you’ll avoid a lot of problems.

It’s no fun to get a boot on your car in Manhattan, and it happened to me so many times. It’s nearly impossible to avoid, because they have it structured to generate revenue, with the “alternate side of the street parking” laws.

You have to constantly re-park your vehicle, and if you don’t …bam …they got ya.

I just don't know if I wanna go back to work.

Because a move back there would mean going back to work. But then again, that was half the fun of NY, except for the commuting on the trains. That was a complete and total bitch. I need to remember how bad it was to get on a train with a broken AC, and be packed in there sweating for an hour and a half just to get to work. And I had all the anti-hygienists on my train….lol.

Well that alone, should give you a good leg up.

It’s so easy to get a job in NY it’s pitiful. They say if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere….but it’s just the opposite….if you can’t make it there, you won’t make it anywhere.

Just speaking good English, and having good communications skills, practically guarantees you a job in NY.

Yeah, the drawback of being a cultural melting pot

Not every culture stresses the wearing of deodorant / brushing of teeth. Not being mean or throwing slander around. It’s just not the norm in every culture.

So getting crammed shoulder to shoulder on a rush hour train in mid-August when the AC does its famous disappearing act next to a guy who doesn’t own a single stick of deodorant and you can smell the very potent BO + Curry-for-dinner-last-night wafting your way is…not delicious.

But man I miss my City.

Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.

Not to mention that there's was always one homeless guy taking a whole corner

who hasn’t been cleaned in over a year. I’ve seen the worst of the worst. The worstest.
