Chiefs Training Camp: Todd Haley Expects Everyone In Attendance
No surprise here but Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said he expects everyone to be in training camp come Friday at 1:50 p.m. when the team lines up for its first practice.
"I’m counting on everyone being there (Friday)," Haley told Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star. "I’m expecting everyone on our roster to be ready to go."
Haley may not get his wish. At this point, there are two players who aren't quite ready.
There's the lone unsigned draft pick, Eric Berry. We have no clue where he stands with the Chiefs as both sides continue with the quietest negotiations we've seen since, well, Tyson Jackson.
Chiefs GM Scott Pioli was on 610 Sports with Bob Fescoe this morning and declined to elaborate on the Berry contract negotiations.
"I don't ever get into discussions of ongoing negotiations," Pioli said. "I don't think it's an appropriate thing to do for a lot of reasons. We've still got a little bit of time before we actually start training camp and we're going to go with the guys we have. Hopefully Eric will be there and, if he's not, we're going to go with the guys we have."
Then there's Jarrad Page. He has yet to sign his restricted free agent tender and can not participate in training camp until he does so. Page won't accrue the $17,000 daily fines because he's not under contract.

It's pretty common for first round picks - especially high ones - not to make it to camp on the first day.
This is nothing new, and I’m not at all upset if Eric doesn’t show up until next week. This is just part of the business.

I think he is only talking about Berry
Page is probably an after thought at this point.
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
Berry's deal will get done...probably sooner than later.
No worries.
I think the Chiefs have done a fine job getting their picks signed.
10 + wins in 2010. Chiefs SHOCK the NFL!!! Mark it down.
I hope that Page signs
I think he has been given some bad advice and he should wake up and smell the coffee.
"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"
Agree 100% on the bad advice...
I wonder if it’s too late for Page, though. This whole deal can’t be making the coaches and FO happy. I’m afraid the damage has been done.

I agree
I hope we can get Page and Berry in by tomorrow. Although Berry is much much more likley. Page only makes this team stronger but if we have to start Lewis that is fine with me, he has crazy good talent and if not for is 40 time being so bad was projected in the 2nd round. I think we got a steal in the 5th for Lewis and hope we see it on the feild Monday Night.
You know what grinds my gears?
The draft is in April, yet year after year, teams wait until July to get the contracts signed. What the hell were they doing in May and June? You can’t tell me they had 2 solid months of negotiations and then BOOM, 7 guys sign in the span of about 4 days.

More BS power tripping, trying to hold people down...
Gotta keep them poor as long as possible. Its time for the Players Association to rise up and take what’s theirs from these old man, spending daddy’s money, oppressors. Upshaw was Tagliabue’s bitch for too long, it’s time for this union to get some bite.

Unfortunately,
It has more to do with the Agents than the players. Berry won’t be signed until the trickle down effect starts taking place in front of him. I bet Berry would be signed right now if it were strictly up to him. His agent can’t risk him signing a deal and then have the guy in the 6th spot get more money. It would put that agent out of business. Next year would come along, and the other agents would use that as leverage against him. It’s about slotting and the agents covering their butts.
This is one big reason a rookie salary structure needs to be in the new CBA. IMO.

Do you think Eric Berry would have any problems getting a bridge loan from a bank?
They don’t have any real power. Berry could get a $5m loan from any bank the day he got drafted.
Predictions:
This year will be better
Clearly that is the reason why your banking system is in the shitter.

Really?
Loaning money to people that can pay it back got us into trouble?
No Craig… it was loaning to people that couldn’t pay it back that ruined our economy.

I just mean more about that "mentality"
I don’t really need $5MM, but lend it to me, and I’ll find some way to pay it back.

Unfortunately I occasionally forget that the spell checker doesn’t work in the headers…
Predictions:
This year will be better
Well, true, I'm not sure a bank would give him $5m in cash & say have fun
but I’d imagine many would finance a large mortgages & give him a very nice line of credit, based on his projected future earnings. Banks do this for doctors all the time. In fact, unsecured student loans are granted based on future earnings expectations.
Predictions:
This year will be better

The Gov't doens't take care of anybody
It just redirects it’s citizens money to take care of other citizens. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, but it’s a fundamental misunderstanding to think that the government is actually the entity which is helping the people.
Predictions:
This year will be better
What name is on the checks that pay for citizens bills?
If it says the name of any governmental agency then the government is who is making the decisions and who is helping people. Don’t quite understand what is so difficult to figure out about redistribution of wealth but, when in Rome…
"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"
what would he use for collateral?
Until he actually gets the money, the bank will not loan on it.
"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"
They take the car as security for the loan.
If he doesn’t make payments, its not his car anymore.
by craig in calgary on Jul 29, 2010 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions
I didn't say that finance companies wouldn't be willing to take that risk
only that $5 million is ridiculous.
"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"
Not if there's a virtual guarantee that he'll get $20m over the next 5 years
There were people getting $200k credit lines when they only made about $80k in annual salary. I know because a friend of mine was doing that a couple years ago.

Apparently Tebow got around 300 K with Nike.
I’m not sure if that’s per year, but Berry’s probably around that area.

I'd think Berry is getting much less than Tebow
Just based QB being such a high profile position, and Tebow being such a high profile player.

Reggie Bush
bought it for him with the college cash he had stashed away…
Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:
1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

It's the slotted system that is the problem
Everyone waits for the next guy to set the precedent, and it trickles from there.
The Chiefs will see a return to respectability in 2010, emerging as the front runner in the AFC West! ....And I'll quantify that however I choose. Ahem.

I think it might have something to do with eliminating unnecessary risks.
Giving a bunch of 22-24 year olds millions of dollars immediately after drafting them gives them 2 months to get into a lot of trouble. Just my $0.02.

Not so
until the contract is signed no money will change hands. If a bank loaned money and one of these guys dies in a car crash, they are out the money.
"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"
True...
But they’re not going to take out a 50 Million dollar loan.
I see your point… but the difference between a couple 100 K and 20-30 million is pretty substantial.

Or collecting interest on a $20M signing bonus for months generates ownership a lot of money.
Same reason many teams were slow to switch to direct deposit.

Agreed
If they had a rookie salary cap this would all be taken care of; players that J. Russell that have never done anything in the league making all that money is ridiculous and needs to stop. Perhaps if the players association would do this then they could spend more money towards retired players health.
You know what could solve that problem entirely?
A draft slot salary like the NBA has. However, I’m not sure the NFLPA would ever concede that.

"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"
As a banker, any loan would have collateral of what was being purchased (house, car) and
insurance covering death or accident. Most of these guys probably have life insurance policies before they even sign.
Yes, but
life insurance policies do not have the value in them that they will pay incase of death. A life insurance policy will only pay the beneficiary, not the debt holders.
"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"
Maybe someone already mention it but...
I’m sure they’ve explored trading options for Page already. I used to like the guy, but this holdout is ridiculous.
