Report: Chiefs Waive TE Brad Cottam After Failed Physical

Citing a source Adam Caplan of FOXSports.com is reporting that the Chiefs have waived TE Brad Cottam after he failed a physical.

The Chiefs haven't confirmed the move so we'll wait this one out.

Cottam suffered a neck injury last year in week 14 and ended the season on injured reserve. He was a 2008 third round pick.

We'll be back once we know more.

Wow i defriended him from Facebook hours ago today...

coincidence!!!

Other Arenas wish they could be like Arrowhead Stadium and when rivals think they are going to be fine on an island of Flowers, they will get hit by what feels like a Carr. Ultimately, they will never be able to eat a Berry ever again.

Good luck to him

I always had hope that he’d turn into a good player for us, he seemed to have some potential. Hopefully his neck is okay.

Yeah i just hope he's ok too.

Thats too bad, but no sense in getting a guys crippled for the rest of his life.

WOW!!

this was one of the last ppl I would of thought got waived released or whatever this is a shocked but i guess it shouldn’t be if he failed a physical!!

this is what ill never get about the NFL

Coaches will release an alright player and pick up training camp legs because they don’t want the alright player to start.. I would figure a solid bench is a good thing

This is more about definates than ‘quality’ players. I’m a cottam fan, but moeaki and banks can start week 1 while cottam may ride the PUP list and/or take up roster space for a player who can contribute immediately.

In Pioli we trust.

by 8k1c6 on Jul 28, 2010 7:58 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

pope starts.

moeki off the bench and will see plenty of snaps. Banks will not make squad. we’ll see musical 3rd te for a few weeks im sure

I say that Banks....

will make the team. He was very impressive in OTAs and if that continues into training camp then Banks will be a Chiefs at the beginning of regular season. It isn’t like we have a wealth of options either.

huh?

he broke his neck a few months ago. It probably didn’t heal enough.

I agree

O’connell is terrible

HEY........quit playing with your dingy

by cassel4prez on Jul 28, 2010 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I definietly agree over O'Connel

But again if his neck wasn’t healed enough what were they going to do? I guess he could go on IR, but it’s quite possible that he’ll never play again, so doing that just costs the team money for nothing.

This year will be better

My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:

1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.

Even if he can't play?

It’s not like they cut him for no reason. He failed a physical, and I’m pretty much willing to believe they wouldn’t cut him for being out of shape just yet. He’d probably get at least a week to prove himself. If he’s gone, it’s because the team didn’t have confidence in his ability to make the team this year.

Not if he can’t pass a physical. O’Connel is a tremendous athlete, that they hope to build into a player.

by SoCalChief17 on Jul 28, 2010 8:00 PM CDT reply actions

Is that legal?

seems like he’s still injured. Seemed like a decent #3 TE behind Moeaki/Pope. I’m sure an AFC West team will pick him up in a week.

That is sad. Football is a "what have

you done for me lately, what can you do for me soon" business. Too bad he never got to grow into his potential with the Chiefs. Maybe he will be able to pass a physical at some point and hook on with someone else.

Dang!

That sucks. I had high hopes for him. I can’t see Slate, Banks, or O’Connell being worth a darn, so expect them to pick someone up at some point.

by Dagda on Jul 28, 2010 8:23 PM CDT reply actions

It's a business

Slate, Banks, and O’Connell are all cheaper than Cottam and can play now. I wish Cottam the best of luck, but having someone of his talent and price tag third on the depth chart at a position we’re likely not going to emphasize too much anyways doesn’t make sense.

I'm expecting...

35-40 rec from moeaki and 25-30 from pope. 4-6 td’s apiece. bowe 8-10 tds chambers 5-7. mccluster and charles with combined 6-7 receiving. Puts Cassel around 30 for yr. Jeez, sounds like alot to ask yet seems reasonable. Thoughts?

yes sad to hear because he had potential. Neck injuries are not worth the long term risk and the move is

not surprising. At this point there was not a whole lot of time or money invested so it was a good move in the long term for the Chiefs. It’s best to reach a injury settlement and wish him well.

Unfortunately, this game we all love is a business. And business decisions often include “friendly” casualties.

I wish Cottam all the luck in the world.

Could this mean Cottam is not the next Tony Gonzalez?

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

by WarWolf on Jul 28, 2010 11:12 PM CDT reply actions

shame he couldnt

Make it back from the injury. But in all reality he was a risk as a 3rd rounder anyway. He had great potential but a college injury history that kept him on the bench for the majority of his college carrer.

Best of luck to him getting and staying healthy.

could it be?

One of those situations where he could come back on IR ?

Seems like another team cut a player, and once he cleared waivers put him on IR

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

by stagdsp on Jul 28, 2010 11:31 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

I know that we still have Chandler Williams

I dont know if you guys even remember him but we waived him earlier this season but if you go to his twitter page he says in his bio that he was put on the IR for the season and is still a member of the Chiefs.. I hope this happens with Brad.

1. Chiefs will go 8-8

Shame...but it happens all the time.

Cottam was hurt playing hard…and is now out of a job because of of a freak accident that can happen to anyone at anytime.

by tomahawk44 on Jul 29, 2010 7:07 AM CDT up reply actions

I will say Moeaki looks to be a good pick if hes healthy(as cottam could have been)

but really to me…this just speaks volumes about how much KC likes Leonard Pope….they trust him. I am happy to have Pope/Moeaki…but I will say that I am disappointed…

the play cottam was injured on sums it all up….makes a great grab….but comes down awkwardly and gets hurt…bummer

Really disappointing

This is a really sad story. Cottam was primed to step up into a key role and I think ready to really produce for the offense. He was just about to challenge Pope for the starting position. This guy has the heart and was on the rise, so I really hate to see this. My best wishes to him in the future.
