Chiefs "On The Brink" Of Signing 3rd Round Pick Jon Asamoah

The Chiefs have two fifth round picks, S Kendrick Lewis and OLB Cameron Sheffield, signed, sealed and delivered. On Thursday the Chiefs also announced the signing of TE Tony Moeaki.

The next one could be coming quickly.

Bob Gretz of BobGretz.com reports the Chiefs are "on the brink" of signing third round pick Jon Asamoah. Reading the tea leaves, Asamoah makes the most sense as the next signing because the players before and after him have signed deals (via Mac's Football Blog):

67. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Myron Lewis, S, Vanderbilt - Signed (4-years, $2.72M; $930,100 signing bonus)
68. Kansas City Chiefs - Jon Asamoah, G, Illinois
69. Oakland Raiders - Jared Veldheer, OT, Hillsdale - Signed (4-years, $2.685M; $895,000 signing bonus)

Assuming his deal is slotted and the Chiefs operate in the same fashion they have with their other signed picks, Asamoah can expect a four-year deal in the neighborhood of $2.7 million and $913,000 or so in a guaranteed roster bonus in lieu of a signing bonus.

If he signs for that and turns into what he is capable of being that’s a bargin. Let’s get them all signed so the new camp experince starts off on a good foot.

Maybe i'm remembering poorly

But it seems like when it comes to picks around here that this year theres alot more excitement and alot less “huh?” when it comes to the talent we added.

absolutely

it helps that it was a deeper draft, so there were more starting-caliber players available

also, they went for more big-name, big-play guys, as opposed to foundation pieces and projects like they did in 09

so, yeah, it’s more exciting

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

Do y'all think we get everybody signed in the next week?

I don’t think Berry is gonna be a real problem child. Sure, he is gonna demand the money the fith pick should get, but I can see him being reasonable, and not being a hold out, if he is treated right. I just base that on what I’ve read about his personality, and his desire to get playing. I may be totally wrong. Money does talk!

The hold out in these cases isn't even necessarily about being a diva

The #1 pick (and often the 1-3 picks) sort of set the tone for all of the picks after them.

Agents often won’t even bite until they see what the #1 pick in the draft gets, plus other signings of the same position (ie: the next Safety or three that were drafted) so they can pick a reasonable (in their eyes) middle ground.

I can’t say they’re necessarily wrong, as that’s just the m.o., especially without a rookie salary cap. But with all the money involved with the #1 pick, it takes a while to get it sorted out – which leaves everyone waiting in the wings to use that as a basis and go on from there.

Anyone with more in depth knowledge feel free to correct me (my knowledge in this area just barely skims the surface) – I’d love to know more details, or any holes in my reasoning.

Maybe I'm thinking about this incorrectly,

but who’s to say the onus falls entirely on Berry? It seems signing picks has a fair amount to do with whether the slots above and behind are signed. Pooli’s hands are tied a little here, no?
