Report: Chiefs, 5th Round Pick Cameron Sheffield Agree To Terms
Citing a league source, Brian McIntyre of Mac's Football Blog reports the Chiefs have agreed to terms with fifth round pick Cameron Sheffield.
Per McIntyre, the deal runs four years -- as opposed to the three year deals the Chiefs did last year -- and also includes the roster bonus and not the signing bonus.
Sheffield's contract has a base value of $1.984 million dollars, and includes a fully guaranteed $194,450 roster bonus in lieu of a signing bonus. The maximum value of Sheffield's contract is $2.75 million dollars.
The roster bonus falls in line with what the players before and after him received as signing bonuses.
141. Chicago Bears - Joshua Moore, CB, Kansas State - Signed (4-years, $1.988M; $198,000 signing bonus)
142. Kansas City Chiefs - Cameron Sheffield, LB, Troy
143. Jacksonville Jaguars - Larry Hart, LB, Central Arkansas - Signed (4-years, $1.982M; $192,800 signing bonus)
This would be the second Chiefs draft pick under contract after safety Kendrick Lewis. We'll wait for the Chiefs official confirmation.

is a roster bonus just when you get put on the 53 man roster you get that money?
or is it guaranteed even he is relegated to practice squad?
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
Pretty sure he gets that money on the day it's due
Signing bonuses can be spread out so the cap hit you take is a little lighter. But there’s no cap, so…

If that's true then it completely makes sense to do roster bonuses for all rookies this year
Joel, do you know if there’s a “Rookie Pool” this year as well? I don’t know how it all works together, but if there is a pool then maybe that’s why so many other teams are sticking with the signing bonus structure?
Predictions:
This year will be better
Yeah there's a rookie pool, which makes this more confusing
B/c a signing bonus wouldn’t count towards that all at once but a roster bonus would.

Thanks.
That is weird then…seems like it will make it more difficult to sign the higher picks. Then again, do the rookie signing/roster bonuses count against that rookie pool? For some reason I thought the pool was pretty small last season (like $3-4million) but TJ received a much larger signing bonus than that figure.
Predictions:
This year will be better
Another one signed
Can’t wait to see everyone signed and on the field for camp.
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.

They can't sign on the same on the
same day…….that is too much of a tongue twister……;>}

Roster Bonus
My guess is they are doing Roster bonuses instead of signing bonuses because it is an uncapped season. They are probably expecting that part of the new CBA will include verbiage that states signing bonuses from this season will applied to salary caps moving forward. If you don’t have to worry about how much you spend this season; pay it and get it off the books. That way if a salary cap based system is reinstituted with a new CBA, and this season retroactively counts towards it, we just created a TON of additional cap space moving forward. Brilliant move by Scott and others.

I was thinking that too
but I don’t know the ins and outs of it all that well. I’m hoping you are correct.

Yeah I was thinking that as well
But roster bonuses don’t protect the team as much as a signing bonus does, from the team’s perspective. Roster bonuses are earned immediately and can’t be taken away, if I recall. Not that it should matter with these players and such little money (relatively speaking).
There’s also the rookie cap to worry about. The Chiefs have about $6 million they can technically spend on the rookies this year. Roster bonuses count against that money immediately while signing bonuses are divided by the length of the contract.
