George Steinbrenner's Death Bumps Chiefs CB Brandon Flowers From ESPN's First Take
After 10:00 a.m. this morning, Chiefs CB Brandon Flowers tweeted the following:
Headed to the Studio to do ESPN First Take KC Chiefs Preview. Make sure yall tune in
And then about an hour later:
Rescheduled the interview...
If you've been paying attention to the news or, you know, anywhere on the internet, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner passed away today. His death is currently dominating ESPN's First Take (and rightfully so).
So Flowers will be back at some point for the Chiefs preview but it won't be today.

This is one of the biggest reasons i hate media outlets these days
I am saddened by this loss being a yankee fan but this will be covered straight through, taking over sportscenter and every other show on espn all day. I think it is fitting to have an hour maybe 2 dedicated to this on one show then move on. I understand that not everyone tunes into the networks at the same time and they’d like to inform everyone but i think the amount of coverage is too much

Steinbrenner didn't ruin baseball
Bud Selig and every owner that voted against Vincent did. Steinbrenner should have never been reinstated in 1993. People show outrage towards Rose, but seem to forget Steinbrenner paying a criminal 40k to “dig up dirt” on a future HOF player, a decent man like Dave Winfield, because Steinbrenner didn’t want to pay 300k to a charitable organization, even though it was in Winfield’s contract. So, Selig forgives one of his own, but completely ignores Pete Rose? Now, i don’t think Rose deserves to be reinstated, he agreed to the ban, but Steinbrenner should have enjoyed that cold wasteland. He broke the rules.
Baseball would have been better off with Fay Vincent, the ‘94 strike probably wouldn’t have happened under his watch. The owners had each others backs and when they made one of their own, the one that led the ousting of Vincent, the “acting” commish.

Give me a break, he built some of the greatest teams to have ever played and did it within the rules. Attack the lack of a salary cap, but not Steinbrenner.
If someone asks you if you want extra mayonnaise you have to say yes, cus that's part of it.

Steinbrenner was a key vote in keeping the Cap out of baseball.

That’s just ridiculous. How can you sit there and say that a guy is supposed to own a business, one whose goal is to MAKE MONEY, and then criticize him for investing more money than other owners will invest?

As much as I hate the Yankees, I admire the man because of this.
He was a pure capitalist, and as with most pure capitalists, he made the people around him and those he employed wealthier. You can argue about the “salary cap,” the plight of the royals, or the success he did achieve, but one thing to admire is that he represented everything good that America stood for: Independent individual success, improvement, and prosperity.

Steinbrenner feared a level playing field and real, equal competition.
The Yankees spend so much more than everybody else that it’s an epic fail in seasons when they don’t win the World Series.
Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.
He bought the team for 8.8 million and now its worth 1.6 billion
I call that a WIN. His profits were through the roof many years and he wasnt operating the team in the red at all, even in years where they lost. I hated it that the Yankees could buy any player that they wanted and often had a payroll two to three times that of the league average, but I dont BLAME the Yankees for that. I blame major league baseball for it. Steinbrenner played that game by the rules set by MLB. Everyone in MLB plays by the same rules, that makes it a level playing field and equal competition between teams. If so many teams felt the rules were so unfair, then the league would have changed them. Steinbrenner consistently put a better product on the field and continuously reinvested team profits into that product to make it even better. Just because other teams lagged behind doesnt mean that he should have.

Steinbrenner didn't want a level playing field. He did everything he could to keep the competitive disadvantage going.
He’s like the New York team that had the 15 year old playing in the Little League World Series a few years ago. He did everything he could to keep MLB from doing real revenue sharing. Guys like Steinbrenner want to win but they don’t want to really compete. The NFL is the model American sports league, massively more successful than MLB, because no single team has the competitive advantage the Yankess have. I am not saying Steinbrenner wasn’t a success as a businessman. I am saying he was a gutless man who wanted nothing to do with real competition.

Do some real investigative work JComp!
Steinbrenner is everything that is wrong with MLB today. He is the reason the Royals will NEVER have a chance to contend. He is the reason I can’t stand to even watch a game that I grew up loving. He outspent the rest of the baseball world to try to dominate the game and win World Championships for the last 20 years at least. What did it get him, and what did it get the league?
He was a large part of the reason why baseball is dieing with our youth today.
I don’t wish him death. Don’t get me wrong. But, I think baseball may be better off in the future.

The reason why less kids are playing baseball is because there are so many more options, not because George Steinbrenner spent a lot of money on his business. How many soccer teams did you see in the average midwestern town in the 60s? Probably a considerably smaller number than today.
What did it get him, and what did it get the league?
11 penants and 7 World Championships.
I have a hard time taking you seriously when you blame the Royals’ problems on Steinbrenner.

Not Royals problems.
Baseball in general. How many more fans would there be out there is teams like the Royals, Indians, Marlins, Orioles, Nationals, Pirates, Cubs, Astros, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Giants…(the list goes on)…had any chance at all to compete on a year in, year out basis. Those franchises can save up and take a leap every decade or so. But MLB has become the Yanks vs. the Sox League and it makes me want to puke.

There are so many more things that go on within an organization than just the payroll. The Cubs have been hit with injuries and underperforming players for years. The Royals sell off every good, young player they get. And don’t tell me it is because they can’t afford to keep them because that’s a load of shit. Other teams are bad because the don’t have a good farm system or because of failed trades or the wrong guys in charger. There are a thousand different things that can go into why a team is bad year after year that you can’t just decide it’s because of the payroll.
There are teams that are bad year after year in the NFL, NHL, and NBA, too.

Okay then
Congratulate him on that if you want. In the 2000’s, they won twice. But they spent 20 times as much to do it. It elevate them and keeps the whole rest of the league down is my point.
I love your name, by the way.

Well
the diff is George could win games with all the money he spends.. Al Davis …not so much ..atleast anymore..
I do wish they just stayed with regular programming...maybe have a 1 hour special or something instead of a sports center...but best wishes to that family.
Team Pioli/Haley. Decade of the Chiefs.
I hope he still gets some media time.
Flowers was doing a great job at draft day cold calling fans at that Sprint booth. You’d give a number to a Sprint rep and she would call a number and just hand it to Flowers and he’d talk to your family member, etc. We had him call my girlfriend’s grandmother who has been buying tickets for 50 years. I think players should do that anyway! I think she has personally financed at least one quarter of a game for Matt Cassel.
He introduced himself and said “thanks for supporting our team all these years.” Then there was a pause and he started saying “we will, we will.” I guess she told him that she wanted them to win some games this year! It was priceless. He was talking to a 90 year old woman and she was tickled to death! He handles himself really well.
I am really hoping that he gets Pro Bowl recognition this year and I think that getting media time might possibly help him in that. Mostly I want to be able to point him out making a huge play and let grandma know that is who she was talking to!
PS: If you’ve never noticed, Flowers has a tattoo on his right forearm that looks like the NFL logo, but instead has BLF. I assume those are his initials. So far in his career, his deserves to wear that tattoo. IMO
Yeah I had BFlow call my dad it was pretty cool
unfortunately my dad was at work so he had to leave him a vmail. I also had Chambers call my brother in law. I was really impressed at the Draft Party this year compared to last
