Mike Vrabel's Impact Being Felt At Chiefs OTAs
I attended the Chiefs rookie minicamp a few weeks back -- it was the first practice I'd ever been to -- and I noticed how much of the conversation you could hear on the field. The players were talking to each other, the coaches were chiming in and all kinds of stuff about who's in position, who's not and so on.
During games, you don't see that all that...but it's there.
Mike Vrabel is someone Chiefs players have publicly declared as a leader of the defense and the team as a whole. Bob Gretz of BobGretz.com writes this morning that there's "no way to discount the value" of Vrabel's appearance at all of the Chiefs OTAs -- something he did not do last year.
"It’s not just his 13 seasons in the league and history of productive play for a Super Bowl champion," Gretz writes. "It’s that Vrabel knows the Romeo Crennel defense forwards, backwards and sideways. It is exactly the scheme that Crennel ran with the Patriots and Vrabel was part of the unit."
Most of the Chiefs went through their "Welcome to the 3-4" moments last season when the initial switch was made. But this season is about perfecting the switch and that's where Vrabel comes in.
Crennel isn't an in-your-face type of coach like Charlie Weis so I think it's good that there is someone like Vrabel on the field talking to everyone. Sometimes having one of your peers instructing you can be more valuable than a teacher.
This is a good sign for the Chiefs moving forward. It sounds as if Vrabel's presence is giving them an even bigger jump on the season compared to last.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Is it right before he flipped the bird to the Denver bench? He looks pissed.
10 + wins in 2010. Chiefs SHOCK the NFL!!! Mark it down.
Vrabel won a place in my heart when he flipped the Donkeys the bird.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that is the way to go, but if it had been me on the field the Donkeys would have been getting the double “California Howdy” from me. And that pic of Vrabel is great. How would you like to be on the field if he was shooting you that look? Good stuff.
"The Hammer"
Hell yes...
That was the exact moment he officially became a Chief, in my eyes.
I mean, what says “I care” more than saying “Fuck you” to the entire opposing team and coaching staff?

I agree Craig...
he is very sexy in this pic! :)

Chuck Norris wears Mike Vrabel underwear.
The Chiefs will see a return to respectability in 2010, emerging as the front runner in the AFC West! ....And I'll quantify that however I choose. Ahem.
That 2nd round trade looks better every day.
Getting two veteran starters for a single (albeit a high pick) is becoming a very smart move. I feel that the direction they’ve taken, from Coaching to the draft selections, has Pioli written all over it. This team will become competetive on day 1. My guess, (barring serious injures) will be a 10 win season.
Add to this...
If Studebaker keeps developing at the rate he had been you can in large part credit that to Vrabel as well and without him Stude may not have even seen the field.

Even after Vrabel retires,
his influence is going to carry on in the body of Andy Studebaker. Studebaker is going to be a good one yet.
"The Hammer"
Agree
The way Pioli gushed about Studebaker on a fan conference call a couple months ago, he sounds like he’s expecting him to be the next Vrabel.
Makes you wonder...
How much our D might have benefited from Vrabel being around last offseason?
Leadership can never be discounted.

I like your thought but...
Vrabel being around would not have made any difference for our WEAK front 3 performance. That is our teams glaring weakness. If I were our opponent, I would ram the ball down our throat all day long.

off topic
anybody know when they’ll give the dates for training camp. I plan on taking a few days off work and heading over to KC from St. Louis to watch some practices. they don’t seem to have anything on the official website
Could be wrong but I dont think the specific dates have been announced yet.
But if they havent been it should be made public soon.

At this time
The sure fire dates that practices will occur should fall on Aug 4th, 5th, 6th,(WED, THURS, FRI) or Aug 9th, 10th, and the 11th (MON, TUES, WED). Of course there may be practicees held on Saturday and Sunday (Aug 7th & 8th) too, but for sure thru the week. First pre game is Friday the 13th at Tony G.’s house. (Atlanta).

vrabel is..
our smartest LB,
he’ll be a big part why the defense is turning around this year.
(& of course R.Crennel & Berry too)
to me Vrabel is still a beast!
Liked this post. Rec'd.
As usual, nice job on this Joel. Great case for keeping Vrabel.
