My Son And A Great Story That Made His Day

From the FanPosts. Thanks for sharing your story, ArrowheadUnDead. -Joel

I would first like to ask all of my fellow Chiefs fans to pray for my 10 year old son who is also a big Chiefs fan. Saturday night we had to rush him to The University of Iowa Hospital because they found a blood clot near his brain. He was taken to the ER in the first place because his eyes became crossed and he started seeing double for a reason we didn't know. He was rushed to U of I hospital where they performed a MRI and found a second clot towards the top of his head.

He is going through some very tough things but he is taking it like a soldier. I have not seen many tears fall from his eyes. I just ask that you pray for my little soldier.

I also wanted to tell you guys about a conversation I had a few minutes ago with one of our rookies -- My favorite Hawkeye and now my favorite Chief Tony Moeaki. This man with just a few comments made my son smile like I haven't seen in a long time.

Star-divide

I have Tony as a friend on Facebook and I made a comment to him about coming back to Iowa City to see his biggest fan who is sick at the U of I hospital with blood clots in his head. I told him my son is only 10 and going through hell right now. I didn't expect a response.

All of a sudden the IM tab lit up red and sure enough Tony responded.

He said he was sorry to hear that but he is in San Diego for an NFL function right now. He asked me to say Hi to my son and tell him to hang in there. He also said to tell him he will be thinking about him. I told him thanks a lot and I'm sure just those comments would make him smile and I appreciated the response. I also told him that I made a promise to my son Devon that I would bring him to Kansas City to see the Chiefs and Moeaki play and that was a promise I will keep.

Tony said no problem and to tell Devon he can't wait for him to come down.

This made my son smile from ear to ear. I haven't seen him smile like that for a long time. I told Tony we will be rooting for him to start. I hope some of you guys will too. This may not be a big deal to some of you but for just awhile my son is probably one of the happiest Chiefs fans out there. I for one think Tony Moeaki was a great pick up in the draft and I will be a longtime fan even if it is just because he made my little boy smile.

Thanks for reading this post.

That’s a tough situation and I just wish him and your family the best of luck through this situation.

And about Moeaki, that is just awesome. Sounds like you guys have gotten a high character player over there. That’s always fun to see. It makes it much easier to root for your team when you know that there are players who aren’t selfish, money-hungry, terrible human beings.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

more thoughts and prayers to you and yours

one thing that i learned through watching my father pass away (he finally died three years ago from a bad case of MS for 20+ years) is that your mental state of mind, and just your general outlook makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD. my dad was in rehab the last few months of his life to re-learn how to do things like chew and swallow his food. but somehow he made it to my brother’s high school graduation. he passed later that same week.

now, i dont want to sound like a downer, but the exact opposite. GREAT thing you did getting Tony involved (very cool for him to respond as he did!). positive thoughts like that are just as powerful as medicine in my book. keep your chin up man, sounds like you’ve got a real trooper there to help you through it ;)

if rhymes were valiums, i'd be comfortably numb

Thank you all very much

We had another pretty good moment today. He looks up to some of the football players at his school, they go to a small school so everything is in one building, and the three team captains who Devon really like came up and brought an autographed football which even the coach signed and said “Devon get better buddy, Dunkerton football needs you”, they brought him a jersey, and an nfl magazine. They had to get dressed in the gown thing with masks and gloves before they came in and Devon told them they looked like amish girls. It was pretty funny. He has his MRI this afternoon and I will be sure to update everyone. Again thank you all, it is wonderful to see all the responses and read them to Devon. He also says thank you.

We’ll be rooting for your kid :) then for Moeaki.

my son had a similar issue

except he had a slight kink in his spinal cord which caused a blood clot. he was suffering stroke like symptoms. my son doesn’t care for sports, he goes to games to placate me. he’s all about music. he plays three instruments (working on 4, just picked up an old Moog synth that needs repair), would rather go to his Rock School than actual school.

when he as in the hospital, The Flaming Lips “The Soft Bulletin” was constantly on loop because, one, that’s my wife’s favorite album and she listened to it non-stop when she was pregnant with Thorn, thus making The Flaming Lips and “The Soft Bulletin” Thorn’s favorite band and album.

as i’m sure you’ve done (or have tried) when you have a child in the hospital, you stay with them in shifts, wife in the AM, me in the PM. one morning, after i got home, i just shot off an email to the Flaming Lips, just to let them know how happy that album was making my son, it was keeping him calm and cool. i got a reply that evening asking what hospital and room he was in.

the next day there was a bouquet of sunflowers from the Flaming Lips in his hospital room. the day after that a large box from OKC, OK arrived filled to the brim with toy robots of different shapes and sizes from Wayne Coyne and a little hand written note for “Thorn’s Eyes Only”…i still don’t know what it read.

your son will pull through just fine. it’s a bit morbid, but scares like these are a strong glue that brings the family closer together.

my family’s thoughts will be with you and yours.

Keep smiling, Devon!

Our daughter had brain surgery last December and all is well now. The docs in Iowa City will take good care of you. It’s a good place. You’ve got a great sense of humor to call those football players Amish girls. You might want to be careful when you go to their games this fall, though. Something like that could get you duct taped to the goal post, I think. :) Prayin’ for strength, healing, comfort and peace to you and your family.

Man when it rains it pours... I have spent way to much time in the ER lately.

I hope that your son gets better soon, and the blood clots stop quickly. Have they done a CT scan or are they doing an MRI. The CT scan is way quicker, and I’m guessing is what told you that he had a 2nd blood clot. Hopefully they can get whatever is causing the blood clots to stop and he is able to have a quick and full recovery.

So from a father with a 9 year old… I’m sending my love, well wishes, prayers to you and all that have concern for your son.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your son.

From someone who spent most of his childhood in the hospital, I know how bad it can get at times. However, with a positive attitude (which it sounds like your son has), it can and will get better.

I really hope your son recovers as fast as possible but until that happens, keep your head up and have faith.

God bless you and your son.

P.S. Tony Moeaki sounds like a great guy and someone we, as Chief’s fans, will be proud to have as a part of our team.

Update

We have moved from intensive care unit down to regular pediatrics. This just means he is stable they say. His bloodclots have not gotten any worse but they also haven’t gotten any better. He had an mri again last night and it showed the same as the last one. They had him on blood thinners for awhile until his blood got to thin so they had to stop them. Now his blood is back to where they want it they are going to start him on a smaller dose. He is really upset because they told him he may have to take blood thinners for the rest of his life which meant no football. He started yelling at the doctors because he is going to play football no matter what they say. Now they said it might be something that goes away so he may not have to stay on thinners so he is content.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your son, and so do the thoughts and prayers of all Chiefs Nation

And let me tell you that the thoughts and prayers of the people here at AP work wonders. I went through a similar situation last October when my girlfriend was diagnosed w a brain tumor. I wrote a post about itand got an amazing response wishing her and I the best and offering thoughts and prayers. It worked…. and there is no understating how meaningful those prayers were for her and I both.

And your son sounds like an amazing kid, the kind of kid with a never quit mentality. Not only will he make it, but he’ll emerge from it all a better man for having been tested and conquering such a challenge. You are truly blessed to have such a son, and he is truly blessed to have such a father. From the depths of my heart to the ears of the Almighty, you and your son are in my thoughts and prayers.

...And as the roar of 80,000 red-clad great plains warriors fills the hallowed halls of Arrowhead, it will strike fear into the hearts of lesser men. For on that field, individual men toil for something greater than individual honors. They toil as brothers-in-arms, as 53 spirits striving towards a single purpose and driven by a single goal: The glory that comes with vanquishing your foes. They will achieve their birthright, they will be champions.

Thank you all so very much

Devon has recently been released from the hospital but we are still having to make trips down to U of I hospitals. He is doing a lot better. His clots have started to shrink. They are trying to get the right dosage of the blood thinners for him because they keep making his blood to thin. Before we left we had a couple of Iowa Hawkeye players come up and visit Dev also. Im sorry it has taken me so long to update you all. We have been very busy with all of the traveling back and forth plus work and school for myself.
