Leonard Pope Ready To Win The Chiefs Tight End Battle
Last week we took a poll to determine the best position battle as we enter training camp. Coming in number two, was tight end.
In one corner, you've got the rookie. Tony Moeaki is young, athletic and a solid blocker. The Chiefs have reason to get him on the field.
In the other corner, you've got the veteran, Leonard Pope, who recently told the Albany Herald at his football camp that he was ready to win the battle.
I feel I’m No. 1 right now, and don’t have plans to be anything besides that. I’m going to work hard and compete every day. It’s a competition, so I’m going to just do my job and compete.
I'd have to say, at this point, Pope is No. 1 on the non-existent depth chart. The Chiefs really like him but from the looks of it, Moeaki will have a fair shot to win the battle.

Pope is a giant, but he's not awkward.
A good between who has work his butt off his whole career. I know he’s teaching cottam & Tony II how to work. I love all of our veterans attitutdes

Right, he's Cottam's polar opposite.
Cottam looks like a cross between a Giraffe and a Stork on Meth out there with missing thumbs.

Well, that might be a little harsh.
He’s not on meth.

I can see Pope holding down the job until Moeaki can get accustomed to the NFL level of play
Unless Pope is playing really well, I think Moeaki will start the first game after the bye

Competetion will be fierce, and beneficial....
also its nice to have depth finally.
he has the ability, he has just never looked comfortable out there or fluid. Maybe Weis can help with that, but eventually "maybe weis can help" isn't going to cut it
Moeaki! Pope can block however, and could be a 2nd tight end or a third tight end that they would use on the goal line sub situations

i thought pope had a decent season.
he didnt seem to drop many balls that came his way and was generally a solid blocker. just dont see him being the receiving threat that Moeaki will be though. between the two, we should be able to find someone to fill the need.
The Hangover - KC Chiefs style
like most I hope Moeaki can produce early however
I really like Leonard Pope, I always was a fan of his size/blocking combo for red zone situations, and was shocked arizona let him go(as were many fans evidently)….Im hoping that this year pope can start more than half the games and produce till moeaki is ready

Pope may be #1...
But his competition is blah, unproven, and injured. And at best, they were below average when they were playing well. Barring some huge improvement from someone already on the roster…only Moeaki is the unknown factor. Don’t forget, we had Sean Ryan starting last year. And that’s sad.
I like these guys, just to clarify. Their on the field performance has been underwhelming, though.
10 + wins in 2010. Chiefs SHOCK the NFL!!! Mark it down.
oh gosh, please never remind me of Sean Ryan again! the blocking...or lack there of...the drops...the horror!

so, I gotta ask ...
… he’s ready now, why wasn’t he ready a year ago?

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
he wasn't with us a year ago, now he has a full offseason with the team, we got him late

He will never be ready. He's extremely athletic but a terrible football player.

this is most likely true...but he sure is athletic for 6'8

both???
Any chance they will play a 2 tight end set much this year? Probably goal line only? I’ve read that Moeaki is a better receiver. That should give him an edge long term. I was just thinking of the success they had with Tony and Dunn. One very good blocker, and one very good pass catcher and route runner (that was also a great blocker). If they really want the tight end in the passing game then I can’t imagine Pope being the long term answer. Good blocker or not. I don’t recall Pope dropping any or many balls last year but I do remember his slow routes. I can’t wait to see Moeaki in camp because they certainly need better than Pope. He could still be an asset in goal line and STs. May the best man win.
We need both.
Pope’s an under-achieving physical specimen, while Moeaki has better odds of a career-ending injury than a pro bowl.
Face it, these guys would be competing for the #2 or #3 slot on most teams. I don’t expect much from either—my hope is that one of them really surprises me.
wait...
i thought tony gonzalez was just on lease for a year to the falcons. so he could fail miserably at winning a super bowl. shouldn’t he be the number one tight end
It doesn't really matter to me.
Unless there is a clear winner in my eyes, and they wind up playing the other one.
Case in point: Rich Gannon vs. Elvis Grbac.

If Pope wins...it's good. If Meaoki wins, also good.

is pope pretty fast for a tight end?

I'm Thinkin
Pope is for sure #1, they should work Moeaki into that #2 spot… and Cottam can get out there from time to time. Maybe TONY Moakei will be the next TONY Gonazalez. haha…
