Who and why?
Today I would like to know who is the most disliked rival player and why. This can be any player from past and present from one of our three conference rivals. The Denver Broncos were the number one overall rival as a team in a series I did a while back. The final poll was:
Denver Broncos: 52% with 94 votes
Oakland Raiders: 37% with 67 votes
San Diego Chargers: 10% with 19 votes
Below I'm going to throw out a few names of players in the past and present that have given all of us Chiefs fans fits. These players dont have to meet any certain criteria, just someone from the enemy that you couldn't stand, you wouldn't even like him if he came and played for the Chiefs. If there is anyone I have left off please tell me who and why in the comments.
Bill Romanowski
What a better way to start this off than Bill Romanowski. He was officially our enemy with both the Broncos and Raiders. Spending time with the Broncos first 1996-2001 then moving on to the Raiders for years 2002 and 2003. Notoriously dirty the one tidbit stands out is of course what he did to Tony Gonzalez:
Two years later, while still with the Broncos, he was fined a total of $42,500 for three illegal hits plus a punch thrown at Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez, and was also fined an undisclosed amount for throwing a football at Bryan Cox of the New York Jets, the ball hitting him in the crotch area.[3]
I have a strong feeling that Romanowski will get a significant amount of votes in poll below.
Shannon Sharpe
That is 100% correct, I posted this picture because I can't stand to look at his face. Shannon Sharpe is by far the biggest Broncos homer on the planet. Sharpe had two stints with the Broncos the first running 1990-1999 and after a short (and welcomed departure from the AFC West) he returned in 2002 and hung it up in 2003.
Unfortunately for the majority of us, we are still tortured by Sharpe on Sundays. Its a rule that on Sundays in my household either the channel gets muted or changed to NFLN when Sharpe comes on. I refuse to watch Fox pregame but the moment his voice comes on I know its either "Broncos this" or "Chiefs suck" that.
Please feel free to write in the comment section if you are a Chiefs fan and actually like Sharpe. I will immediately print this post and save the paper to start a fire with once the season starts.
I like nothing about this individual. I hope his light's go out in San Diego in the near future (tomorrow if not today) and he moves to Tibet. The little dance he does after a sack is annoying just like anything that pertains to the Chargers, but recently with all his drama and roiding I have to say I'm glad he gives the Chargers a negative imagine.
We may see him stick around for a few more seasons with the Chargers but eventually the wheels are falling off in San Diego and he will be gone. Unfortunately it will be the Raiders that will pick him up and we will have to watch him "highlighted" before every game.
Honestly I don't like Rivers because he is good, he plays for the Chargers, and yeah he is good. Rivers may not get many votes in the poll but I would expect there are a few APers on here that just cant stand him. Ive seen the funny pictures posted, I heard the nicknames now lets see where he ranks.
(Not-So) Honorable Mentions
John Elway Broncos starting QB from 1983-1998. Growing up he was always top of my list, because of his improbable comebacks, winning the Superbowl twice, and always having that little grin on his face even after he threw an interception. Watching #7 get sacked by Derrick Thomas was a Superbowl in my household.
Steve Atwater The "Assassin" played High School ball in St. Louis Missouri. Playing for the Broncos from 1989-1998 Atwater won 2 Superbowls and was voted to the NFL 1990's All-Decade Team, and 8 Pro-Bowls.
Jack Tatum Also known as the "Assassin" played for the Raiders from 1971-1979. Tatum is the epitomy of John Madden's Raiders. He actually paralyzed Darryl Stingley in a pre-season game and made no attempt to apologize for the incident.
For the sake of space I'm going to end the list here. I know there are many more out there that we as Chiefs fans hated to see on the field on Sundays. Whether they were dirty, cheap, annoying, or just good there is a certain of thanks I give to all these guys for the simple fact they make this rivalry that much better. When our Chiefs were able to beat these teams and players its makes our victory that more sweet.
So there you have it AP, let me know who I forgot or left off the list in the comments!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Rivers is a little bitch.
I have a sports and coaching background. I don’t want to see ANY players get hurt. That said, I’d like to see Rivers have a Joe Theisman-like incredibly grotesque injury. Something where both knees get hyperextended so badly that the tips of his toes are touching his waist.
Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

In the Joe Theisman case, it's more of a toes touching your knee thing.
Been there and done that. Wouldn’t wish it on ANYone, even Rivers.
I'd like to see Rivers as one of the victims in the Saw movies....

Favorite Shannon Sharpe moment...
Honestly, it has to be Derrick Thomas freaking out and swinging Sharpe around by his face mask. Not Derrick’s finest moment, but funny as hell to me at least.
I seriously lol'd thinking of that.

Raiders Ben Davidson
Lenny " The Cool " Dawson was on the ground . Davidson ran across the field & speared Dawson in the back with his Raiders helmet ! Otis Taylor tackled Davidson , then other Chiefs players showed Davidson how much the Chiefs didnot like this behavior .

I know he’s only been around for one season, but I can’t wait for Charles to embarrass him this year. That was the dirtiest play I had seen in a long, long time.
Elway beat us like a dead horse, but the guy I hated, detested, always did ...
Ben Davidson … DLine with Raiders wayyyyyyyyyyyyy back when … one time he got to Dawson and kind of grabbed Lenny The Cool by the shoulder pads or something, swung him around like a toy doll and deposited our poor QB about 8 yds back down the field … Dawson shrugged it off (and to be honest, I’ve seen a lot more punishing hits over the years) but that one stood out, certainly the melee it caused between all those pad-wearing players pushing each other like it was All Star Wrestling (come on, pads and helmets, they ain’t hurtin’ anyone) but the rivalry, already intense, was secure as a “blood battle” for years afterwards

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I think this really should be quantified for..
Because most of the fans today that witnessed the Chiefs-Raiders playoff game which led to the Chiefs appearance in Super Bowl IV, are now gone (and yes, by that I mean dead) I think this should be quantified, into two groups:
All Time…..and Modern Era.
When posed this question, the first that pops into my mind is undoubtedly Ben Davidson, and the second for me is undoubtedly, John Elway.
But I just can’t see a guy of 30 or 35 or so, having the sames picks. I think you have to have lived and witnessed something for it’s recall to inspire emotion.
In short, there is no one over the age of 45, who claims to be a Chiefs fan, who would pick any other player, than Ben Davidson.
It was the seed that he planted, his random act of evil, that planted the kindred spirit of hatred for the Raiders which has been nurtured and watered for the climactic harvest for an entire generation of fans since that infamous day.
If any one on AP hasn’t seen the game referenced above in it’s entirety, I highly recommend that if you get an opportunity to get your hands on a copy, to do so. You’ll never look at the Raiders the same way again, I promise you.
My third pick? The greatest receiver in hated Raiders history. Fred Biletnikoff.
His greatness inspired fear in the masses.
Great post JR. Rec’d.

I honestly could have posted almost every player from the 3 rivals but tried to keep it someone at a resonable length. I never saw Ben Davidson’s hit or incident but I am going to look it up.
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
All time and modern would be a great idea.
Rivers undeniably wins modern.
But for all time… someone with a lot of knowledge on this could put together a good list of hated rival players and give us a quick run down on why they were hated.
Great way to educate some of us younger Chief fans.

I am over 45 and I remember the Ben Davidson stuff but the name Biletnikoff still rings in my ears. Agreed, good post. WRECKED. Kray taught me that!

Plus, Listen to his MNF games he covered! I find myself saying ‘No Sh**’ over and over and over for every play.

I honestly was going to put Madden on the list
not only for everything you mentioned but because of his stupid ranking on his game they always give the Chiefs.

I'm not a combative sort of guy usually, but....
Screw Shannon Sharpe and the inbred horse he rode in on.
During his actual playing days I probably hated Romanowski more. But the Sharpe hate just lingers. He needs to develop some weird affliction where callouses grow on his vocal chords so he can’t talk anymore, thereby removing any chance of him continuing to do Sundays on fox sports.
With my luck, that would happen, then he’d just go get a Stephen Hawking-like mechanical voice relay thing, and I’d have to hear that thing blathering on about the Broncos, still somehow managing to effect that smarmy “please kick my ass”smugness that he does.
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.

When Shannon Sharpe played for the Broncos against the Chiefs ( it was a brite sunny day ) Shannon ran a route up the right side line I think it was Greg Wesley who layed Shannon out ! I am sure if you look up that hit ; you will feel better !

I loved the way KC came out wanting to beat Sharpe up at the line. I hated how his "Poor Me" act influenced the refs.
I loved the way Wayne Simmons was playing Sharpe. I hated it when Sharpe threw a tantrum and got SIMMONS penalized. If Simmons could’ve kept his temper, and not retaliated against the BLATANT after-the-play attack-at-the-knees, Sharpe would’ve been exposed as a punk, and defenses might use more of the “maul the wussy TEs” tactic in the years since. It was a good idea, that KC and others appeared to abandon prematurely (Simmons was discredited and soon left the team), and a few teams have quietly started using, here and there.
Were it up to me, I’d throw a LB in the face of every pass-catching TE in the league. Give him a mauling every play, regardless of your down-the-field coverage intentions. Don’t worry about speed, just win the power matchup at the line.
I hate Elway. Wish that guy would get a disease or something.

There’s very few players I can’t stand or root against. Rivers is one. Just a weak armed punk. I give him credit for bcoming better than I ever thought he could, but in the playoffs, if you just play his receivers tight and dare him to go long, he doesn’t have the arm for it, and that’s why, along with the Norvelous stiff coaching them, they always disappoint in January.
all your points
are reasons why I cant really dislike him more than Sharpe (who I voted for). I get excited when they blow it in the playoffs and love seeing him walk off the field upset. The wheels will fall off soon enough there and we will see how he composes himself.
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.

I hate that guy. His douche bag attitude combined with his douche bag face is enough to make my blood boil. I cannot wait for Berry to start a long career of terrorizing this douchey primadonna. I had a dream a couple of weeks ago that Berry picked Rivers off twice on MNF. And on the 2rd pick Berry knocked the piss out of Rivers when he tried to tackle him. Put his douche bag body on a stretcher.
Here’s to hoping dreams come true.
The pain from Elway has passed. But I still see Sharpe and have to put up with his diarrhea of the mouth regularly regularly, so he was a close 2nd. Romanowski was 3rd. That dude is just plain insane. ’Roided up maniac is all he was.

Not only was he a Raider AND a Bronco, the guy was flat out the dirtiest player in the game. They took a guy who was easy to hate in the first place and sent him to the two teams we all hate the most! That should equal twice as many votes.

Romanowski
What an absolute horror of a human being. Roid warrior, Bronco and Raider, spitter, cheap shot artist. Didn’t he even seriously injure one of his own teammates? It was good to hear some of the ahem, more mature fans remember Dick head Davidson as my old man called him. I tell you this though, I’d rather have Davidson sleeping with my sister than have Romanowski in a Chief’s uniform.
The most important thing you can do in life is help other people.
Wow.
Guess it’s hard to hate Atwater. That’s understandable. I can’t think of anything he ever did to be dirty to the Chiefs. From what I remember he deserved a lot of respect. He was a smash mouth player and one hell of a safety. From what I remember he was a decent man and a leader for his team. It’s hard to hate the rival players that do nothing but play good against you, and not be ass holes. That hit on Okoye was awesome. I can admit that.

Atwater was one of my favorite players ever. I can imagine that how you felt about him must be similar to how I felt about facing the great D Thomas. I was just watching our matchup from… I think it was 1991 at Mile High… and marvelled at how Dan Reeves had to game plan entirely around DT, often double and triple teaming him. Relentless.

I selected Bill Romanowski.
It was a tough choice, but I went with Romanowski because while all the others are “HATED” by Chiefs Fans everywere…they are hated because of their outstanding play against the Chiefs and they did it in a “classy” way.
Romanowski on the other hand was about as dirty of a SoB that I have ever seen play the game. Dude had tallent, but NO class!
im not that old but i said merriman

Gotta be Elway, but on the opposite side of the coin
the player that I had utmost respect for that sparked his team to victories over the Chiefs in the last game ever at old Municipal Stadium and in the very first regular season game at Arrowhead stadium — and that was WR Paul Warfield playing with Miami at that time. Poor Emmitt Thomas had a miserable time in both games as Warfield was nightmare for any DB to try and cover one on one.

Warren Wells, the great Raider deep threat mentioned earlier, also had my utmost respect.

at the 1:58 mark.
For me
It was Junior Seau when he was still in Charger-land. It all started during the pregame interview clips before the 92 WC game @ SD where he said " we will win and rejoice" (unfortunately he backed it up), then his fist pump during the 94 AFC Championship game after stopping Pittsburgh after 1-2 yd gain (all my friends just looked at each other thinking, huh?; I know this wasnt against the Chiefs, but helps illustrate my point), and then his cheap shot on Elvis Grbac after he was down for about 2 seconds during a Thursday night game in 97 @ Arrowhead (Grbac took it in on a keeper on that same drive). I mellowed my hate after he left the division, but when he was there….ugh.

I would have thought Sharpe would have been higher on this list
considering what he did to Derrick Thomas.
I loved Elway’s comebacks, but if I recall correctly – he didn’t win many games in Arrowhead Stadium….

Yes Sharpe had an unstoppable mouth
but he usually backed it up with his play on the field. In a few cases (Marino comes to mind), he actually apologized for letting his mouth get away from him. But on the field… well, if he got into his opponent’s head, that was on them, imo. He also gave his first SB ring to his brother Sterling, who never had one. So yes, we Bronco fans loved 84 even though his personality was pretty much diametrically opposed to a guy like Tony G or even Rod Smith.
Not so high on his post-career punditry, though, I have to admit.
And I’d take a John Lynch over a Bill Romanowski any day of the week. Liked Romo’s hits, but he’s more than a little bizarre. He was destined to wear silver and black, no question.
