This One Is For Dad

It's been about 8 months since my dad checked into the hospital, missing leg and all, from complications of Diabetes for the last time, and this will be the first complete Chiefs season that I will witness without him.

My dad and I didn't always see eye to eye on everything.  We had a rocky 50 years together, to be sure...... but the one thing we could always count on.....and find to talk about ......were the Chiefs.

I didn't sleep well last night and got up and made coffee around 5am and my desktop calendar reminded me that it was Fathers Day.

Apparently, I hadn't really come to a full realization that my Dad is really gone......................until this morning.

My dad loved the Chiefs, and when the tapes began to roll............strangely......they were of him....screaming the worse obscenities one could imagine at the TV with every Chiefs blunder.

Then came my waterfall of tears, and the final acceptance that he wasn't coming back.    It just all came flooding out.  All the good times..... the family vacations....... the Chiefs games......."The Longest Day"......and yes.... some bad stuff too.......as my dad went to the mat for me............a thousand times.

In the final few years of his life, we watched the Chiefs "together" less and less, preferring the comfort of our own man caves, and to suffer our Chiefs in private.    But......there was always a certain point during each game, where you just knew that the inevitable momentum shifting play.....would inspire just enough emotion, and then...I would have to pick up the phone and call him, or he would beat me to it, and the phone would ring, and there he'd be on the other end and I would hear............

"Did you see that? I don't believe it.........they may just win this thing!".........or......."Listen pal....let me tell you something..... these goddam, MF'ing Chiefs are the worst goddam team I've ever seen"....or ..."those MF'ers.....I can't take it any more".

There's a lot to miss about my curmudgeonly cantankerous old pop..........but I think I'm gonna miss those phone calls most of all.

So......to all my fellow AP'ers who are fathers, and/or still have their fathers with them to enjoy this year's edition of the Chiefs .............................I just want to wish you all....

a very ........................................Happy Fathers Day!

and please.....for yourselves and for your dads..............................................savor every moment.

"I love you Dad"

Chronicles 17:11. "And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go [to be] with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom."
